ow that we’ve turned the calendar to September and Labor Day is in our rear view mirror, summer is technically on the wane. Never fear. Locals know that the only thing better than a Santa Barbara summer day is a Santa Barbara September day. And the only thing better than that is a Santa Barbara September evening at the Santa Barbara Bowl. While distinct spaces, these rooms are open to one another, allowing a clear flow of activity. Sunlight streams through big windows in the living room, while a stately yet subtle fireplace with a red brick hearth holds court against the far wall. The dining room enjoys a focal tri-panel arched window and offers a stylish space for entertaining, homework, or game night, as well as dinner time. A wide breakfast bar defines the edge of the kitchen, which is spacious enough for collaborative cooking and sure to be a gathering place. Stainless steel appliances,

solid wood cabinetry, and newer tilework provide a classy backdrop, while a skylight and double windows over the sink provide ample light and a view. An adjacent alcove houses the laundry room and provides a convenient side exit. A hallway leads to the bathroom and two bedrooms. Outside, on one side of the house, the long private driveway leads to an oversized finished two-car garage. The driveway can shelter four or five additional cars, offering priceless convenience during Bowl season. A townhome behind the house, built in 2004, is accessed via a

neighboring street and shares only the garage wall. The two homes make up a 2-unit condo association. On the other side of the house, a doorway from the living room opens onto a private courtyard patio surrounded by a tall redwood fence and bordered by greenery, including a wall of ivy that curls picturesquely up the side of the house. This picture-perfect setting will be a go-to spot for almost-year-round dining and entertaining. Listening to the sounds of the Bowl shows next door while relaxing as the sun sets, summer in Santa Barbara will continue on, no matter what the calendar says. n

Happy Campers Party at Zoofari Ball

A

t this year’s Zoofari Ball, guests enthusiastically got into this year’s summer camp theme, and the nearly 600 happy campers helped the Santa Barbara Zoo raise about $200,000. Couples in matching camp T-shirts and shorts were at every turn, while others opted for the always-popular safari attire. Upon arrival, guests strolled up the scenic walkway to the hilltop, while youth on each side serenaded them with camp songs. Small, colorful tents provided the perfect camp backdrop. The two-hour reception was held on the zoo’s expansive hilltop lawns, surrounded by lush botanical gardens. The Replicas’ Craftsmen and V & Sid provided the tunes from a fictional waterside camp stage, which sported nautical props, including a canoe and rowboat. A multitude of other props combined to cleverly turn the zoo into summer camp, including a log cabin, archery targets, and lifelike deer, moose, and horses. Rincon Events served up gourmet treats at several food stations, including crowd favorite French onion grilled cheese sandwiches with bacon jam or red wine and shallot jam. An endless display of silent auction items garnered lots of attention. Guests dined under open-air tents at tables with attractive red-and-black lumberjack plaid linens and lanterns. After the buffet dinner, the happy campers danced the night away to music by the Replicas’ Main Attraction. Event cochairs Nancy McToldridge (zoo director), Lisa Carter-Alford, and Taryn Choquette and their 42-member event committee started planning this year’s Zoofari Ball the day after last year’s event. Carter-Alford’s Behind the Scenes Event Design, which has done the event for 23 years, spent a whole week doing the install. Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree was crowned “Camper of the Year.” She arrived in classic safari

attire, sporting Zoofari badges from many of the 25+ balls she has attended. Lady Ridley-Tree served on the zoo’s board for seven years. The zoo’s restaurant and animal kitchen bear her name. Robyn Parker received this year’s title of “Bar Babe,” along with her eponymous bar in the dining venue, in recognition of all her hard work on the committee. The Santa Barbara Zoo is a nonprofit organization that receives no tax dollars. It has about 150 species and about 500 animals on its 30-acre ocean-view estate. Its current budget is $12.8 million, with about 43 percent of revenue coming from admission fees; 45 percent from retail, concessions, membership, and educational activities; 10 percent from events and contributions; and one percent from investments. The zoo has 160-200 employees, depending on the season, and more than 500 volunteers. It provides expertise to several conservation programs, including ones directed at the California condor, the island fox, the California red-legged frog, the western snowy plover, the western pond turtle, the southern sea otter, and the arroyo toad.

If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos.” Many people think life would be better without bugs: ants, wasps and mosquitos. In fact, life would be impossible without them and their insect comrades. Insects turn dead plants into fertile soil; they pollinate flowers and our food crops; they are food for birds, bats, and other animals; they control pests that are harmful to humans; and they are the foundation of most terrestrial ecosystems. Here are suggestions to reverse the decline of insect populations: • Stop all use of pesticides in your house and garden. • Plant lots of varieties of native and insect-friendly plants in your garden. Encourage the City and County of Santa Barbara to do likewise in our parks, along our roads, and wherever there is a little bit of bare ground. • Push our local, state, and federal governments to ban neonicotinoids. We do not need them. There are four decades of research and evidence concluding that regenerative farming can

here are over seven billion people on the planet, and we are overtaxing and stressing almost every resource and natural system. This is well known. There are, however, 200 million insects for every person living on the planet today — a staggering number. Despite the enormous number and variety of insects, their populations are plummeting. They have decreased by 40 to 70 percent in the past 30 years, depending on which research and region one looks at. Pollution, habitat changes, overuse of pesticides, and global warming are clobbering insect numbers. Kendra Klein, a senior scientist and co-author of a recent study found that American agricultural lands are 48 times more toxic to insects than 25 years ago, caused almost entirely by widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides. Klein calls this the second Silent Spring. In 2018, the European Union banned neonicotinoids, and this year Canada greatly restricted their use. The distinguished biologist E.O.
