f, like me, you enjoy walking around our idyllic town and pretending to enjoy it through the eyes of a visitor, this past Saturday was the quintessential staycation Saturday. Blue skies, bright sunshine, and a warm breeze made the perfect setting. I found myself strolling West Beach, admiring the tidy gardens and deco architecture. Many of the houses one passes are actually hotels or short-term rentals, so the area has a more manicured look than many neighborhoods, and the beach vibe is strong. Cruising down the wide, gentle slope of Natoma Avenue toward Bath Street, I noticed an open house sign posted in front of a gated courtyard, framed by palm trees, with a babbling central fountain surrounded by bright green grass. Dawn, the real estate agent who showed me around, seemed as enchanted by the setting as I did. She invited me up to see unit D4, but admonished, “Don’t you dare leave without checking out the pool!” Dawn apparently didn’t realize that Staycation Sarah ALWAYS checks out the pool. Up a tiled staircase, the front door of unit D4 opens onto a large, light, and luxurious two-bedroom townhome. With 1,800 square feet of living space, plus vaulted ceilings and a two-story layout, the interior is spacious and airy. The living room, kitchen, and one en suite bedroom are on the main floor. The kitchen is open to the living room, which has a big brick fireplace on one wall and a decorative floor to ceiling window on another. A surprisingly spacious laundry room rounds out the first floor, but a peek of an interior balcony up above made me want to hurry upstairs to check it out. The top floor enjoys delightful mountain and red-tilerooftop views from many angles. The master suite has a fireplace, large bathroom, and a cool double walk-in closet with a mirrored dressing area in between. There’s also a bonus room with an interior balcony that overlooks the living room below. Whether used as a den, office, or third bedroom, this open-concept room with a view holds enchanting options. I peeked into closets as I often do, admiring the generous storage space. One door surprised me by opening

onto an additional exterior staircase. This secret exit is shared with the unit next door. Other bonus features include air conditioning, radiant heating, water softener, and secure private parking. Not wanting to ignore Dawn’s directive, I walked around the pool area before I left. There’s not only a sunny pool deck but also a sauna and spa, plus a clubhouse and barbecue area. This place checks all the boxes for staycation must-haves. I walked away from Harbor Court, past the fountain and palm trees, knowing that I had discovered another perfect slice of Santa Barbara. Less than a block from the beach, this townhome offers just about everything we love about living here, poised for the perfect staycation.

Rescue Mission Holds Bayou 500

O

n October 5, about 335 enthusiastic supporters of the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission (SBRM) gathered on the picturesque grounds of Rancho Dos Pueblos in western Goleta for its annual Bayou fundraiser, this year a racecar-themed Bayou 500. During the reception, guests in black-and-white checkered attire mingled, perused some of the 140 silent auction items, tried model-car racing around the large swimming pool, checked out the fancy real cars lining the entrance, and enjoyed music by the Idiomatiques. The event netted about $350,000 for the SBRM’s Residential Treatment Program and its homeless services. Guests were seated for dinner on the expansive lawn of the estate, which is reminiscent of a Southern plantation, hence the Bayou name. From a stage framed with black-and-white checkered flags, President Rolf Geyling welcomed guests. He stressed how the homeless are human beings who are suffering and that 65 to 70 percent of clients at a shelter have a mental illness. Over the past two years, the average age of clients at the SBRM’s shelter was 59 years old. Last summer, the Rescue Mission sheltered 13 clients in their seventies, and a few weeks ago, it had three women in their eighties. According to Geyling, the Rescue Mission provides compassion for those who are suffering. It is a place where people of passion and faith “extend grace simply by providing food and shelter to those who would otherwise go without.” Geyling explained that by meeting the basic needs of the homeless, they “find some kind of stability and then can take steps of self-responsibility toward the more focused and specialized help they may need.” Geyling continued, “And extending grace in this way does create opportunities for incredible transformation.” Because of the prevalence of substance abuse and addiction among the homeless, the Rescue Mission focuses the majority of its resources on its 12-month Residential Recovery Program. Geyling observed that more than 50 percent of federal and state prison inmates are battling addiction, and that the criminal justice system is a very expensive way of addressing the problem. The Rescue Mission’s program costs only $25,000 for each individual in the state-certified, 69-bed program,

a fraction of the cost of many other programs and the criminal justice system. Geyling cited remarkable statistics: Nationally, only one in five people who start a treatment program complete it and only one of five people who complete the program maintains recovery for five years. Currently, the Rescue Mission’s completion rate is 43 percent, and 52 percent maintain recovery five years out. Amazing. A Rescue Mission graduate eloquently shared his powerful story of how thanks to the SBRM, he went from a life of severe addiction, crime, and prison to becoming a clean, sober, law-abiding, gainfully employed, happily married, and well-adjusted person. Guests responded with a standing ovation, broad smiles, and some tears. The Léni Fé Bland Award this year went to Montecito Bank & Trust Chair Janet Garufis for her pivotal role in the Rescue Mission’s recently completed, $12 million renovation of its 40,000-square-foot facility. According to Geyling, “Our community will now have a place for Decorations Chair Dianne Davis, Auxiliary Member Lorette the homeless and addicted to turn for decades to come Harnsberger, and Silent Auction Coordinator Rose Hodge in large part because of Janet.” He praised Garufis for the “heart and thoughtfulness she brings to her work.” Many past award recipients were present, including Sheriff Bill Brown, District Attorney Joyce Dudley, Bob Bryant, Penny Jenkins, and Bill Cirone. Last year, 41 individuals graduated from the Residential Treatment Program, which reflected a lower enrollment because of the renovation. The program includes academic instruction and job training, and nearly all graduates were employed at the time of graduation. The emergency shelter program currently has 100 beds and recently has been operating at near capacity. Soon, another 20 beds will be added. In addition to its emergency shelter and 12-month Residential Treatment Program, the Rescue Mission also offers family support, relapse prevention services, and men’s sober living. The Mission receives no government funding. The event was put on by the 70-member Women’s Auxiliary, which assists the Rescue Mission throughout the year. Director of Communications & Constituent Relations and Women’s Donations are being sought for the $100,000 remaining in Auxiliary Member Rebecca Weber, past Women’s Auxiliary presithe capital campaign and are always welcomed for ongoing dent Julie Willig, and Women’s Auxiliary Member Pamela Haskell operations.

REAL ESTATE SCOOP VILLAGE PROPERTIES HOSTS BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE EVENT

Village Properties Realtors wrapped up a successful Back-to-School Supplies Drive for the nonprofit Teacher’s Fund with an adult pizza party & ice cream social reminiscent of our grade school days. Drawing some 200 guests, the event took place on October 4, 2019. a gorgeous evening in the beautiful garden courtyard of Village Properties’ downtown Santa Barbara offices. There was plenty of delicious food – from pizza and sliders to ice cream and cupcakes – plus live music and extra attractions including a photo booth and face-painting. In thanking all of the attendees, sponsors and vendors for their support, Village Properties owner Renee Grubb offered special thanks to her co-chair Brianna Johnson, the Village Properties Realtor who first envisioned the inaugural drive to raise funds for classroom enrichment education in Santa Barbara.

Johnson “touched everything you see today,” said Grubb, who also thanked committee members Amy Abbott, Angelina Speier, Sheela Hunt, Dianne Johnson, Candace Cavalleto, Jessica Hernandez, Ivonne Arroyo, and Leanne Wood for their support. Village Properties started The Teachers Fund in 2002, to help out in classrooms from pre-kindergarten through high school throughout Santa Barbara County. The 2019 fundraising drive ran from Sept. 16 to Oct. 4 and amassed $51,500 that will be donated to help teachers purchase supplies they cannot get from the district. “Our reason for the drive was to help our teachers bring their students creative ideas to help boost their teaching efforts,” said Grubb. She also offered praise to grant writer Dana Patterson, who traveled from San Francisco to join in the celebration. Donations for school supplies for local classrooms can be made through www.tfsuppliesdrive.com, until the end of October.

he Santa Barbara Association of Realtors traveling team recently spent a week at the California Association of Realtors fall business meetings in Los Angeles. At these meetings policy is debated and set in regard to how C.A.R. conducts itself, advocates for its members, and protects the interests of homeowners statewide.

While all state directors have a duty to look out for the best interests of the C.A.R., we also have the opportunity to share what we experience locally and help educate our fellow directors.

More than just a top down dissemination of real estate related information, the conference is intended to allow Realtors from around the state an organized opportunity to learn from one another about how to improve the industry, be more effective representatives, increase our service to the community, and our level of professionalism.

The end goal is to create a place where we can all come together to learn and make informed decisions that benefit those that we represent.
