I
often fall in love with the guest house when I’m visiting a bigger house for sale. I’m not sure if it’s the bitesized beauty of cute cottages, but I frequently find myself more at home in a petite pad than in the main house itself. Give me a she-shed or a pool house any day and I’ll be plenty happy. When I went to visit a 1950s ranch-style house at 1645 Las Canoas Road last week, I wasn’t the only one ogling the guest house. Its claim to fame had other visitors giving it a once-over as well, based on its historic reputation. The main house itself was well worth the trip. One of the first homes built in an idyllic area near Skofield Park, its boulder-studded setting promises tranquility and seclusion. The home’s long, low facade, painted a sandy gold with sage-green trim, blends subtly with the landscape. A terraced arbor intertwined with greenery frames one entryway, while a tiled pathway edged with succulents and native plants leads visitors to the main entrance. The front door opens into a foyer with the living room and kitchen to the right and the bedrooms down a hallway to the left. Multi-panel windows and wood-framed French doors showcase the natural beauty just outside. Set on two acres, this property encompasses the landscape as far as the eye can see. The living and dining areas form an expansive great room open to the kitchen, a concept ahead of its time for a home built in 1955. Vaulted ceilings with recessed lighting provide a spacious, airy feeling, with a fireplace in the living room for cozy winter evenings. While the house overall has a classic, original feel, the kitchen has been remodeled in all the important ways, including newer stainless appliances and quartz countertops. It also has high ceilings and an abundance of natural light, making it a bright space to work and a natural gathering place. Next to the kitchen is a half bath and laundry room, and a breezeway that leads to a separate free-standing work-
shop, waiting to be a home office, art studio, or whatever fits your lifestyle. The front hallway leads to three bedrooms and two more baths. They’re comfortable and bright, and all of the rooms seem to be oriented to the out-of-doors. I gave in to the allure of the landscape and stepped out of sliding doors from the master bedroom onto the covered back patio that runs the length of the house. While the property is almost completely level, the lot is situated at the top of a knoll, so it enjoys views in all directions. The ocean and islands are visible to the south, and gorgeous mountain views can be admired to the north. Sandstone boulders, plus mature oak and olive trees, are dotted throughout the two-acre property, and a mini orchard boasts lemons and other fruit trees. Having explored every corner of the main house, I was finally free to visit the guest house. Located down a rocklined path, it has one bedroom plus a reading nook, a full bath, and a great room with a new kitchen. Its own private yard and deck enjoy the same lovely wide-open views and setting as the main house. A nameplate at the front door declares its pedigree: It was once the “Forest Cottage” located at the San Ysidro Ranch. It was moved to this property in the 1990s and was recently legally permitted as an ADU. It can therefore be a separate rental unit or used for guests or extended family. It is far enough from the house to afford privacy yet close enough for comfort. Perhaps the most charming thing about the guest house is its history: Records from the San Ysidro Ranch
show that many famous visitors slept here, among them Mick Jagger. I’m not sure about Mick, but if I could wake up to the natural beauty outside the Forest Cottage and sip coffee on my deck while listening to the birds, I could definitely get some satisfaction.

Firefighters Host Special Olympics Fired Up Dinner
O
n October 19, about 200 supporters of Special Olympics Santa Barbara Region (SOSBR) came out for the 5th Annual Fired Up Dinner hosted by the S.B. County Firefighters and S.B. City Firefighters at the Carriage and Western Art Museum. The event raised funds for SOSBR’s amazing year-round sports program for those with intellectual disabilities. During the reception, guests mingled inside the museum and on the scenic grounds. Firefighters served drinks and food, Knights of Columbus members grilled tri-tip and chicken, and a host of local dignitaries visited with the crowd, including U.S. Congressmember Salud Carbajal, State Assemblymember Monique Limón, Police Chief Lori Luhnow, Sheriff Bill Brown, City Fire Chief Eric Nickel, CA Highway Patrol Captain Cindy Pontes, Councilmembers Meagan Harmon, Eric Friedman, Oscar Gutierrez, Jason Dominguez, and Randy Rowse, and County Supervisors Gregg Hart and Das Williams. About 20 dedicated firefighters whose fire watch duties prevented their attendance came straight from duty to clean up afterward. Development Director Gina Carbajal welcomed guests and thanked the multitude of supporters in the City and County Fire Departments and law enforcement agencies along with all the other guests who enable Special Olympics to operate. Special Olympics Southern CA (SOSC) President and CEO Bill Shumard had special praise for the volunteer coaches who are “the people who make it happen.” He related that the athletes learn how to win, lose, communicate, and make friends and noted further that Special Olympics athletes are twice as likely to have a job as others with intellectual disabilities. Shumard reminded guests that Special Olympics is not just about sports but is also about changing the culture, and that the organization is leading the way regarding inclusion, acceptance, and diversity. Savannah Barclay, who has been a Special Olympics athlete for 12 years and a Global Messenger for eight years, shared how Special Olympics changed her life. With great enthusiasm, she talked about all the friends she has made — friends she thinks of as family — and the multitude of opportunities Special Olympics has given her. With a broad smile on her face, she reflected on how much fun she has had
attending the Summer Games at CSU Long Beach, where she has met celebrities and other athletes. She closed with the sweetest thank-you to guests, which must have touched every heart in the room. County Sheriff Lt. Ugo “Butch” Arnoldi was honored as the Volunteer of the Year for his 37 years of tremendous service. In the early 1980s, he organized the region’s first Law Enforcement Torch Run and Tip-a-Cop fundraisers and has coordinated law enforcement’s participation in both events since 1986. Arnoldi also recruits his colleagues for the Polar Plunge and to hand out medals at competitions and games, and of course he is an integral participant at all these events. Samuel Jauregui was crowned the Athlete of the Year. He excels on the swim and floor hockey teams and participates on the bocce, tennis, and bowling teams, too. Tennis coach Liz Frech related that Sam “is our comforter, who does his best to make us all laugh. … He is always grateful for each day and says thank you after each practice.” Others related how Jauregui also excels at volunteering, both at events and in the office. The Community Partners Award went to County Fire Captains Bryan Fernandez and Tyler Gilliam and City Fire Captain Tony Pighetti, who were instrumental in starting the Polar Plunge and Fired Up Dinner and participate each year. They, along with their departments, also volunteer at School Games, providing first aid assistance and handing out medals. The Santa Barbara Region, which includes Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, and Santa Ynez, serves 600-plus youth and adult athletes. With a lean staff of four and about 300 volunteers, SOSBR offers year-round training and competition in 12 sports, all free of charge. Athletes participate in competitions both within the Santa Barbara/Ventura Region and throughout the Southern California Region. Those who qualify can go on to the Southern California Region’s Fall Games and Summer Games, the U.S.A. Games, and the World Games. Special Olympics operates in 193 countries and serves five million-plus athletes through its network of volunteers and supporters.

The Hall Team Celebrates HALLoween With Foodbank Fundraiser The Hall Team at Compass held their annual pumpkin carving party this week, inviting friends, clients, and neighbors to drop in and carve pumpkins over three days, October 28-30.
Kevin and Lesley Hall began this tradition in 2005 when their children were in elementary school. Kevin Hall explained, “We wanted to create an event with a Halloween theme, and also give back to the community. This seemed like a natural fit, and it helps raise awareness of the services that The Foodbank provides in the county.”

The Halls took a hiatus when their kids graduated and left home, but resurrected the event last year, in part because neighbors asked about the tradition. In 2018 over 200 people attended, and over 150 pumpkins were carved. $1,311 in cash was raised, and several hundred pounds of food was donated. The pumpkins are placed on custom-built risers in the Halls’ front yard at 3709 Capri Drive in San Roque. At night, the pumpkins are lit from within by strings of lights, creating long rows of glowing orange masterpieces for passers-by to enjoy. The pumpkins are on display through tonight, so the community can admire the glowing pumpkins, and donate to support the Foodbank. Donations of nonperishable/non-expired food items will be collected along with cash or check contributions.
