Classic Craftsman with a View and Much More

hen I went to visit the Craftsman-style Victorian home at 1746 Prospect Avenue, I suspected from its lower Riviera location that it would have a great view. What I didn’t expect was the plethora of charming details inside and out, vintage and new, upstairs and down. The romance starts at the street. The house is accessed by a staircase sheltered by an arched, jasmine-covered trellis overhead. Feeling as though I was entering a magic doorway, I ascended the tunnel of greenery, certain that it would lead to something special. When you emerge from the stairway, the house looms large and lovely at first sight. Sage-green wood shingles and white curlicue detailing decorate the tall two-story facade, with a steep pitched roof and a distinctive secondfloor dormer window up above. The house was built in 1900, and it has all the charm of that era. An extra-wide set of wooden steps leads up to an equally spacious front porch. This outdoor living room invites guests to sit and enjoy the majestic ocean, island, and city views spread out beyond. Private enough to feel like part of the house and encircled by a white banister bordered by bougainvillea, this is a porch that will truly get enjoyed. A cardinal-red front door opens onto a dramatic foyer, with the living room on the right, dining room on the left, and a classic staircase straight ahead, zigzagging upstairs. The ceiling in the foyer extends all the way up to the second floor, with a heavy wood banister that curves gently out of sight. An alcove under the sloped stairwell creates the perfect nook for an entryway bench. This combination of high-ceilinged spaciousness plus cozy intimacy blends comfortably to set a welcoming tone and hint at the treasures to come. The dining room takes advantage of big corner windows with south- and west-facing views. The windows throughout the house have been completely refurbished, with new pulley axles, cords, and sashes. They retain their original charm but operate smoothly. The dining room windows — and those in some other rooms — also enjoy motorized window shades; just one touch from a light switch raises or lowers the shades as the light shifts

throughout the day. These modern touches go unseen but are certain to be appreciated. A large pass-through window peeks from the dining room into the kitchen, keeping both spaces bright. The kitchen’s centerpiece is a gorgeous La Cornue range, with a Bosch dishwasher and Liebherr refrigerator rounding out the gourmet appliances, and white wood cabinetry complimenting gleaming granite countertops. From the kitchen, one can step out to the backyard, into a powder room, or down a stairway to the basement. Yes, this house even has a real, “walkout” basement, big enough to be outfitted as a gym or play space and complete with water hookups for flexibility. Another door from the kitchen leads to a laundry room with wide countertops for folding and clever bonus storage as well. The laundry room continues through to the living room, giving the entire first floor of the house a convenient, circular traffic flow. The living room is a large, bright space for watching movies or reading in front of the ornate sculpted-plaster fireplace. Pocket doors lead into an adjoining office, and triple French doors open onto the lush backyard. Outside, a slate patio showcases a redwood-lined spa, a fountain, and a fire pit with curved seating around its edges. There’s a built-in barbecue and plenty of room for entertaining. Terraced gardens feature a pergola in one corner and mature landscaping that continues around the sides and front of the house, with plentiful citrus and avocado trees. Back inside, all three bedrooms and three baths await upstairs. Two suites lie on either side of the house, each with a fireplace and a walk-in closet. While one is larger,

the other boasts a window seat, and both have enviable treetop views. The third bedroom, however, is one of the most captivating spaces in the entire house, with unparalleled views provided by eight adjacent windows on the front and both sides. This room is at the very front of the house, so the ocean is straight ahead. Gazing out from this wraparound vantage point feels like being on a ship’s prow, sailing over the rest of Santa Barbara. While considered bedroom number three, this room is currently styled as a sitting room, which feels appropriate, ensuring that the magical view can be enjoyed by all. This home has the view that I had hoped for, surrounded by myriad details from its period past and enhanced with unexpected modern-day surprises, offering something for everyone to love.

here is a beautiful tree on a little culde-sac, planted in my name, providing shade and a picturesque frame for the home adjacent to where it grows. It was a gift from a local REALTOR to my parents when I was born, nearly fifty years ago, when they bought their first house.

A Chinese proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The next best time is now.” A New Year. A new decade. How are your real estate goals coming along? Is it finally time to stop paying rent? Is it time to acquire that investment property you’ve been thinking about? Is it time to make a move to accommodate a growing family? Or is it time to downsize, to a more manageable size or to a single level? Have you been thinking about these ideas for some time now? Where would you be now if you had started on them a year ago, five years ago, or even a decade ago?

The good news is, it’s not too late to get started. In 2019 the interest rate for the 30 year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.9%. That is the lowest in nearly fifty years, about the same as when my tree was planted. Historically, the spring market has been the busiest buying season, but according to the numbers on realtor.com, the spring market is starting now. January is the new April. “…the second best time to plant a tree is now.” This proverb reminds us it is never too late to start and to focus on what we can accomplish in this present moment. Our actions today shape the possibilities for our future, when we can see just how important those beginnings were. It’s never too late to plant your tree. Call your REALTOR today. Maritime Museum Kicks Off 20th Anniversary Year by Honoring Bob Kieding

O

n January 9, supporters of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum gathered at its Collections Facility to kick off the museum’s 20th anniversary year and to honor Bob Kieding, the key doer who made the museum happen. At the event, a new name for the Salinas Street Collections Facility was unveiled, the “Kieding Collections Chandlery.” Executive Director Greg Gorga warmly welcomed the 50 supporters and shared his excitement for the start of the 20th anniversary year. He recognized many who were involved with the museum from the start: founding boardmember and the second executive director Lee Fleischer, founding and current boardmember Leslie Leaney, founding boardmember Peter Howorth, volunteer at the start and current boardmember Andy Cooper, and current Board President Don Barthelmess. Also recognized were the man whose idea the museum was and its first executive director Milton Schwartz; former councilmember Rusty Fairly, who helped make it happen; and Nick Di Napoli, who drew up the early exhibits, which according to legend happened on cocktail napkins at the S.B. Yacht Club. Gorga also lauded the four Keystone Founders for their financial contributions: Ed and Helen Wilson, Barry and Jean Schuyler, Tamara DiCaprio, and Charles Munger, who together contributed $3 million of the $4 million raised. Gorga related how one day Kieding was standing outside the museum and responded to an inquiring passerby that they were opening a museum. The passerby turned out to be Charlie Munger, who replied that he loved museums. In a lighthearted moment, Gorga remarked that while Kieding had done a lot for the museum, that was the best thing. While all these individuals were important to the museum’s founding, Gorga saved his highest praise for Kieding, an unsung hero whom he called the main doer — the one who really moved the project forward. Kieding, owner of the Santa Barbara Chandlery, also served as president and vice president of the museum in its early years.

Deputy Director and Curator Emily Falke (whom Gorga introduced as another unsung hero who gets lots done without a lot of recognition), lauded Kieding as her inspiration over the decade she has been part of the museum. Boardmember George Writer first acknowledged Kieding as the premier sailboat racer of his time, and then, more significantly, as “a real can-do guy” who was the one who made the museum happen. The museum opened in 2000 in the Waterfront Center Building, formerly the Naval Reserve Building. Its mission is to interpret the rich and diverse maritime history of the Santa Barbara Channel, including important environmental issues. Twenty years later, the museum is expanding and improving its many exhibits and educational activities for all ages. Exhibits include the Point Conception First-Order Fresnel Lens, the historic sport fishing yacht Ranger, and an extensive collection of Dwight Brooks’s fully functional boat models. Innovative educational programs include the Marine Sciences, Ocean Connections, and Spirit of Dana Point Tallship Overnight programs, which take children out on the sea, often for the first time. This 20th anniversary year will have many events and exhibits, including a May 29 fundraiser honoring surfing legends Renny Yater and Shaun Tomson, and a Founders Dinner and Reception in December. There will be a few notable art exhibits: Through March are traditional Japanese gyotaku prints, Fishing with Paper and Ink; opening April 22 is Mermaids, photography by Ralph Clevenger and friends; and on October 1, maritime paintings by Naval artist Arthur Beaumont. stockpile is sourced on-site during construction projects. For example, it’s fairly common that boulders large and small are unearthed when a new homesite is initially graded. That’s when Langhorne’s team comes in with shovels, wheelbarrows, loaders, cranes, and dump trucks. Back at the materials yard, located in Goleta, the cobbles are sifted and sorted by size into hog-wire baskets, ready for the next installation, often at the same property from which they were sourced. The siftedoff dirt makes its way into garden and landscaping projects all over town. “We try to limit our waste,” Langhorne says, pointing out that small scraps of sandstone get crushed into gravel for driveways and drains behind retaining walls. “We’re left with just a bit of dust on the ground.” Downtown, on the industrial lower Eastside, Langhorne has a 5,000-squarefoot shop with a 10-ton crane, a stone lathe, and three computer-guided stone-cutting saws. The biggest blade measures two meters across and its teeth are made partially from diamonds, enabling it to slice
