s I walked through the front gate and up the brick path toward the gorgeous English Tudor home at 212 Canon Drive last week, white petals from the graceful magnolia tree drifted down around my shoulders in the breeze. A more romantic welcome could not have been choreographed. The more I experienced of this charming home, I realized that this sweet greeting was right in tune with the magic I would find throughout. The bones of the house are apparent from the street: It has classic Tudor wood detailing on the façade of the second story, accenting the steeply pitched roof in subtle yet characteristic style. The front-door detailing dares visitors not to smile at the first of many careful yet unexpected touches: a bronze door knocker fashioned into a fox. Inside, the front staircase rises impressively from the foyer, offering a clear line of sight upstairs and providing a dramatic, open tone as one enters the house. Gleaming oak floors lead to the living room on the left and the dining room on the right. The formal dining room is a classy yet friendly space, with unique wainscoting detailing on the walls and

amazing mountain views out the front of the house. In the other direction, the living room features a commanding fireplace on one wall, while built-in bookshelves flank French doors on another, and wood-beamed ceilings soar overhead. The overall atmosphere of this lovely home is both elegant and comfortable. I could’ve stayed there all day, but as I turned to leave, I gazed at the mountain view from the front porch and noticed that the petals were still sprinkling their magic. I went happily on my way, determined to keep the sweet spell of this home with me all day.

Montecito Firefighters’ Charitable Foundation Hosts Celebration Fundraiser

T

he firefighters behind the Montecito Firefighters’ Charitable Foundation just keep on giving. These brave, generous individuals who risk their lives for us on a daily basis desire to do even more to help those in need — so they run a charitable foundation that provides grants to ill and injured firefighters and their families, children, victims of natural disasters, and burn victims. On February 1, the Foundation held its second annual celebration fundraiser, this time at the Rosewood Miramar Beach, where guests enjoyed a fun celebration and raised $60,000 (net) for this worthy nonprofit. Among the 210 guests were 85 firefighters and their significant others (nearly the whole department), whose tickets were paid for by generous donors. VIPs arrived early for a cocktail reception, where Montecito Fire Protection District (MFPD) Chief Kevin Taylor recognized the incredible men running the foundation: Fire Marshal Aaron Briner (president), Engineer Lucas Grant (vice president), Firefighter/Paramedic Shawn Whilt (secretary), Firefighter/EMT Dan Arnold (treasurer), and Assistant Fire Marshal Alex Broumand (member-at-large). Taylor related how the firefighters in his department go above and beyond every single day that they are on duty for all in the community, and on top of that, in their spare time, this group of five active-duty firefighters also runs this foundation to further help those in need. Other guests then arrived, and the cocktail party continued in and around the ballroom, followed by a gourmet buffet dinner in the ballroom. Foundation Vice President Lucas Grant welcomed guests and shared that while the primary focus of those who run the foundation is responding to emergency calls, their passion for helping others drives them to run the foundation as well. He both thanked guests for past sup-

port and asked for further support so the foundation can continue to make a difference in the community. Andrew Firestone, as always, entertained as he raised funds in the auction and paddle raise. Event Steering Committee Member and event sponsor Nina Terzian had the winning bid for a 10-person dinner party at MFPD Firehouse One with the firefighters preparing the food and joining the guests ($3,600), and a children’s birthday party at the firehouse ($1,600). Vacation offerings generated even higher bids. After the paddle raise, N’Demand resumed playing, and guests danced into the night. Formed in 2006 by the Montecito Firefighter’s Association, the Montecito Firefighters’ Charitable Foundation was a small, quiet organization until a couple of years ago, when the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow sparked an uptick in donations and then the organization began hosting an annual fundraiser. Foundation grants, which totaled $55,000 last year, went to debris-flow victims; firefighter and firefighter family medical expenses and funeral expenses; firefighter mental-health support (donations to the S.B. Police Foundation’s At Ease program and the Iverson Foundation for Active Awareness); burn victims; and underprivileged children in the area. While the assistance to firefighters is focused on those in Santa Barbara County, the foundation has also made grants to firefighters in Northern and Southern CA and has no geographic restrictions on helping firefighters in need. The Montecito Firefighter’s Association is the nonunion organization representing firefighters as well as dispatch, mechanic, prevention, and administrative personnel.

But he is also smart, kind, generous with his time, and he has perfected the art of one-liners at the most unexpected of times. What is your greatest extravagance? Food! Spending

a full day of cooking in the kitchen or gathered around a table to feast with friends and family is never time or money wasted. What is your current state of mind? Contemplative.

t’s all about bringing people to town,” says Jennie Jacobs. “We love to highlight all the fun stuff to see.” Jacobs is the director of sales and marketing for the Hotel Santa Barbara, and I love following her account on Instagram, for she puts in so much creativity to showcase the diverse experiences that Santa Barbara offers. It would be easy to think that she’s doing marketing for the entire region, not just the historic downtown hotel. “We’re not a resort,” she explains of Hotel Santa Barbara. “What makes the hotel special is all of the things around it. I think of Joe’s Café as an extension of our hotel.” Located near the intersection of State and Cota streets, this property has been a hotel since the late 1800s. Since 1975, it has been owned by the Jacks family. For more than 30 years, Carminia Castaneda has been the general manager. Such combined experience makes the hotel feel like an oasis in the middle of State Street’s bustle. Jacobs has worked there for more than three years, but she only recently launched the Makers Workshop Series, in which artisans lead classes and share their crafts with guests. There was a driftwood wall-hanging workshop last week, while future events will focus on brass earrings (Feb. 22), block carving and printing (Mar. 5), and dream catchers (Mar. 11). All classes are open to the public, with discounted rates available to hotel guests. “We’re excited about the series,” she says. “It’s fun for us to put together.” Born at the Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, Jacobs has an infectiously brassy and positive attitude. She graduated from Dos Pueblos High in 2002, a straight-A student. “I always wanted to be an artist,” she admits. “I’ve always liked to create things.” After studying at SBCC, she majored in psychology at Sonoma State. “My first job was as a case worker for the criminal diversion program in Santa Rosa,” she recalls. “I was 21, and I was telling people they needed to go to AA!” She came back to Santa Barbara in 2008 during the financial crisis and found there were no jobs. “I went back to school at SBCC and studied graphic design,” explains Jacobs, who then worked for a marketing agency before landing a marketing job at Sansum Clinic.

She met her husband, Kyle Phillips, at Velvet Jones. They’ve been married for 12 years. “He’s so different from me,” she confesses. “He works for CMC, the rescue equipment company.” They live on the Westside. She cherishes her current position and the team at Hotel Santa Barbara. “I went from marketing colonoscopies to marketing cotton sheets,” she says with a laugh.

involved in the Santa Barbara community. Being downtown, collaborating with Downtown S.B. and Visit Santa Barbara, serving on the board for Hospitality Santa Barbara. I feel like I am in the know. Plus, I get to work and collaborate with so many amazing people. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would like to stop comparing myself to

others so much and comfortably embrace where I am now. I love the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that says, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” What do you consider your greatest achievement? I am

proud of my choices and hard work that have allowed me to carve out a happy life here in Santa Barbara.

What is your motto? YOLO! Someone told me it isn’t

cool anymore, but I stand by it, dammit. Mainly because

What is the quality you most like in people? I love people who can engage in the

art of quick-witted banter.

What is the quality you most dislike in people? Small-mindedness! What do you most value in friends?

A sense of humor. I love people who make me laugh and laugh at my jokes. (Shoutout to all my friends!) The funniest people I know are some of the smartest and most creative I have ever met.

What is your most marked characteristic? My

curly hair!

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I have

the mouth of a sailor, and I do not apologize for it. Science tells us that people who swear a lot are smarter, have better vocabularies, are happier, healthier, and better looking. Okay, maybe not that last part. Which talent would you most like to have? I feel like

this is a common one, but to sing well! Look, don’t get me wrong; nothing stops me from singing. I just wish it sounded prettier. And my husband probably does too.

Where would you most like to live? I would love to live

in a perpetual summer, so splitting my time between Santa Barbara and somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere would be dandy. Anybody want to do a house swap? What is your most treasured possession? A family heir-

loom emerald ring, given to me by Kyle.

What makes you laugh the most? Dogs! Especially our

dog, Remy. He’s a funny dude.

On what occasion do you lie? I will lie to save someone from having hurt feelings unnecessarily. And I am also known to embellish a good story, but used judiciously, and only for maximum impact and hilarity.
