of a very superior style.” The article continues, “The house on the upper corner, which in its arrangement and design takes the lead, has seven rooms, the parlor and dining room being connected by sliding doors.… Besides the good taste shown in the design of the buildings, they appear to be built upon honor.” An 1892 Sanborn Fire Insurance map of the area shows a stable behind the house. However, in 1887, the streetcar tracks ran along Bath Street past the home. This was the same year that the first train from Los Angeles reached Santa Barbara, and State Street was paved for the first time. The Isaac R. True family, the longest residents of the home, began renting the house about 1900 and obviously treasured it, because they bought it in 1902 — for $3,000. Isaac; his wife, Lizzie; and daughters Eva and Laura made it their home until the last family member passed away in 1954. Graffy obtained the photos of the home and the True daughters wearing their befeathered chapeaus from descendants of the family. In 1956, the home was bought by Oliver C. Bedford and his wife, Constance, who moved the home from its original location at 1531 Bath Street and turned it to face Arrellaga Street. His son and daughter-in-law Robert and Carol E. Bedford are the current owners of the home, which now contains four rental units. A sandstone wall is still in its original location along the sidewalk on Bath Street. Graffy remarked that walls like these are an easy indicator to show where an old house once stood. Happily, this house still stands in what is now considered downtown — or nearly downtown — Santa Barbara. Passersby can admire it sheathed in its original redwood shiplap siding, flaunting its distinctive elaborate trim.

I
t’s no surprise that the home that stands at 309 West Arrellaga Street is on the City of Santa Barbara’s Designated Structures of Merit list. The way this house appears today looks identical to the circa 1910 photo that local historian Neal Graffy obtained from one of the home’s former owners. The photo of this residence, along with the stories of the families that have inhabited it, echo a timehonored tenet: When tracing a home’s history, it’s helpful to follow the people trail as well as the paper trail. This is one of the few Second Empire–style homes in Santa Barbara, a style that peaked in the 1870s when it was called French style. The Second Empire was named for Napoleon III’s reign from 1852 to 1870. The mansard roof is one of the defining features of this style named for François Mansart, a French architect in the 1600s. Mansart took a gable roof, put a crease in it, and bumped it out to create more room in the attic and a vertical surface for windows. According to articles in the Santa Barbara Daily Press, this home is one of several on this block built by realtor/surveyor James L. Barker in 1875. While Barker was one of the movers and shakers in the growing city of Santa Barbara, he did not live in this home; he lived in an area that now bears his name: Barker Pass. In 1875, West Arrellaga Street was considered off the beaten path. Homes in this area were described as “a short distance out of town.” In November 1875, a writer describing the neighborhood wrote, “The lots command a fine view of the bay and mountains. They are bordered with a row of bearing olive trees, and have also other fruit trees.” Focusing on this home and a similar one on the corner of Bath and Micheltorena Streets, the same writer commented, “The corner houses have a French curb roof, and are larger and of more solid architecture than those on the middle lots. … The parlors have bay windows and marble mantels. There is provision for a grate or stove in almost every room. The inside finish is all excellent, and that of some rooms

SBIFF Hosts Riviera Red Carpet Pajama Party
L
ast Sunday afternoon at the Riviera Theatre, SBIFF literally rolled out the red carpet to welcome supporters to its 2nd annual Riviera Red Carpet Pajama Party. Open to the public, the event raised funds for SBIFF’s (Santa Barbara International Film Festival) extensive and impressive education programs. The 160 guests strutted down the carpet in an assortment of bedtime attire, including Kathy Ireland sporting a soft pink robe. Guests entered a fabulous clear-walled tent with a vaulted ceiling, where they mingled and feasted on gourmet food and beverage offerings from multiple purveyors. Some watched the other pre-Oscar party on a jumbotron. Others had fun posing for photos on a kingsize bed. Everyone seemed to enjoy the theme, happily leaving the gowns and tuxes at home. Afterward, guests got to watch the Oscars in the Riviera’s state-of-the-art theater. SBIFF is well-known for its world-class film festival. Less well-known but also world-class are its education programs for youth in Santa Barbara and beyond. As a result of the wild success of the film festival and other funding sources, SBIFF offers, free of charge, a dozen amazing programs, which further its mission to “engage, enrich, and inspire people through the power of film.” Some of these programs, like the Film Studies Program, run in conjunction with the film festival. This three-day symposium for college students includes private sessions with filmmakers (this year, David O. Russell and Tanel Toom, as well as a Q&A with actor Christopher Lloyd) and access to the rest of SBIFF: panel discussions with top industry professionals, tributes, and 200+ films, including Q&As with filmmakers. Each year, 30 SBCC students and 30 out-of-area students participate. The 10-10-10 (Ten Writers — Ten Directors — Ten Films) Competition offers 10 high school and 10 college students an incredible mentorship opportunity with industry professionals. Mentors have included top talent like Prudence Fraser and Robert Sternin, who have written, produced, or developed more than a dozen primetime series; actor Perry Lang; producer Joe Medjuck; and multi-Emmy nominee screenwriter Glenn Leopold. After five months of work, the resulting films are shown at the Arlington Theatre on the final festival day, complete with an awards ceremony. Mike’s FieldTrip to the Movies, founded by Mike
deGruy, brings nearly 5,000 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade students, mostly from Title 1 schools, to the Arlington Theatre for a film and a discussion with the director. The program seeks to use filmmaking to stimulate creativity, confidence, and cultural awareness. SBIFF provides a study guide and, for some schools, an in-school filmmaker presentation. This year, Oscar-winning Toy Story 4 (Q&A with Director Josh Cooley) and Frozen 2 (Q&A with Co-Director Chris Buck and Special Effects Supervisor Erin Ramos) were Boardmember Mimi deGruy, Special Events Manager Jill Remy, screened. Film Camp, in partnership with the and Boardmember Lisa Solana United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC), is a six-day overnight summer program at Camp Whittier, where 30 lucky low-income UBGC members ages 12-16 learn about film production and appreciation. According to Development Manager Shannon Kelley, SBIFF’s programs for kids, which encourage them to express themselves, are so valuable in life, regardless of whether the participants end up pursuing a filmmaking career. Under the Rosebud Program, 10 Kathy Ireland and Laura Macker Johnston Santa Barbara County college students participate in SBIFF’s Cinema Society transportation, admission, and refreshments each month each fall. Students see more than 20 films and attend Q&As to a film at the Riviera Theatre for transit-dependent with directors, screenwriters, producers, and actors. They seniors. She started working at Regal Rents 22 years ago and stayed on board as the company became Classic Party Rentals and then Bright. “That’s half of my life, which is sort of ridiculous,” she reveals with a laugh. “When you think about it, I literally have done nothing else. The office I currently occupy is the same office I’ve had since 2004.” The secret to her longevity? “What I do is always different,” Charuvastra explained. “After 22 years, I’m still learning.” As an example, she tells me about hanging drapery earlier that same day. “Decorative fabric is not something that has been part of our wheelhouse,” she explains. “We should have double-sided. We’re constantly catching mistakes and learning from them. There’s always some challenge that we have to find a solution for. The team I work with are real MacGyvers.” Charuvastra grew up in the heart of West Los Angeles. “I wasn’t a great kid,” she admits. “My mother told me she’d never thought I’d make it to 21. By the time I got to college, I wasn’t interested in partying, for I had done it all.” After graduating from Concord High School, she opted for pre-law at UCSB. But after earning her bachelor’s in law and society in 1999, she decided to take a year off. “I was all ready to go to law school, but I had a 21-year-old meltdown,” she says. “I answered an ad in the paper for an event rental company, and that was that.” In 2009, she married a chef named Ron True; they celebrated their 10th anniversary on November 14, 2019. “We’re both stubborn and strong-willed,” she concedes. “After my mom passed away, I mellowed out. I was 34 years old when she died. It was the hardest thing I had experienced. I put off having a child until I was 40.” Charuvastra’s words of workplace wisdom? “I have used zip ties numerous times to hold my hair up,” she says.

NICOLE CHARUVASTRA ANSWERS THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE. What is your motto? “Get it done.” Even if the “it” is relaxing on the couch with my husband because I’ve been running around all day. I always try to do things to the fullest and with complete commitment. Who do you most admire? My mother. I remember when I was a kid, the last thing I wanted was to grow up and be like my mother. Now as an adult, I try and embody everything I can remember about her and how she held herself in public and in private. She was an incredible woman who raised three children, practically by herself. She tried and failed many times to create a niche for herself in the business world, never gave up, and finally found great success in the second half of her life. Witnessing her persistence and drive in my youth has certainly shaped the person who I have become today. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would like to learn to be a better listener. Often, I feel
like my brain is moving at light speed, constantly checking off the endless list of things to do in a day. With this constant thought process, I find that I miss listening well to others around me. When I force myself to stop and really listen to what someone is saying, I feel like I am being a better wife, friend, or coworker. What do you like most about your job? The team who I
work with. Truthfully, they are family. We support and challenge each other, just like any family might, to try and pull the best out of one another. I’ve worked with the company for over 20 years, and I have so many people who have worked alongside me for a similar length of time, who have seen me through many milestones in my life. I couldn’t imagine doing what I do with any other group of people.
friends would tell you that if you want the truth, go ask Nicole. My mother would have told me that I need to think before I speak. Where would you most like to live? Any place where my friends
and family are. Truly what makes me happy with where I live are the people who surround me. I could be happy in the middle of Siberia so long as my family and good friends are near — certainly a whole lot colder, but just as happy.
What is your most treasured possession? After having
experienced great loss when my mother passed away and then inexplicable happiness when my daughter was born, I really don’t have any possessions that I truly treasure. I think your outlook on everything changes with these types of milestones in life, and possessions become passing things that come and go from your life. It’s funny; my dad always told me to enjoy spending money that I had earned, because when you die you can’t take it with you, and he’s not wrong. Who makes you laugh the most? My daughter makes me
laugh all the time. Especially when she has found something she loves and wants to do it over and over and laughs every time at the exact same moment. But also, the group of guys who I work with out in the field — they make me laugh all day. I spend a good portion of my life at job sites all over Santa Barbara County with my work crew, and we find humor in the littlest of things. Which historical figure do you most identify with? There
are so many great women in history. I’m not sure there are any who I feel I could live up to the notion of identifying with, but certainly there are many whom I admire greatly. One in particular is Sandra Day O’Connor. She was the first woman nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court and was key in many important decisions of our generation, including upholding the protection of women’s rights issues protected in landmark cases like Roe v. Wade. I remember my mother telling me as a young girl (and all her granddaughters subsequently) that if I worked hard enough, one day I too could be a Supreme Court Justice. Needless to say, my mother was not very happy with my decision to abandon law school for the event business. But as with everything else, she accepted that I would follow in my own footsteps and find my own happiness. On what occasion do you lie? Every day, to my daughter.
