Mom’s Place at Silver Sands Village
W
hen your mother announces that she’s decided to sell her house, it can pull at one’s heartstrings in unexpected ways. Naturally, that’s the case when it’s the home you’ve grown up in, but I learned this week that such news can also stir up emotions even if you’ve never lived in the house. My mom — at age 80 — has decided that it’s time to downsize. Mom has lived in her home in Silver Sands Village in Carpinteria for the past 18 years. It’s a bright, twobedroom, two-bath mobile home located just one block from the beach and adjacent to the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve. Mom’s place — a k a space #21 — has a fireplace, a washer and dryer, a storage shed for her bike, and a cute little garden out back that grows the sweetest cherry tomatoes in town. We’ve cooked many Thanksgiving dinners in the spacious remodeled kitchen and played boisterous games of Aggravation in the dining room. The home enjoys an open layout, with the kitchen, dining, and living rooms conveniently conjoined, just perfect for family gatherings. The second bedroom has hosted numerous houseguests, including two different sets of our cousins from England last year. Visitors love to vacation at Mom’s bed and break-
fast by the sea. That’s why, when she called to tell me that she was putting her house on the market, my first reaction was shock. What’s wrong? Where could she be going? Mom loves her house. We all love her house. Silver Sands is an owner-owned park, which means that each of the 80 homeowners has equal membership in the nonprofit corporation that owns the land. But the real allure of Silver Sands is subtler. The vibrant sunsets span the beach and the mountains, the ocean breeze is gentle, and the pace is laid-back. Without a doubt, the top selling point for Silver Sands is the location. Every time I’m there, no matter what’s on our agenda, our visit includes a stroll past the salt marsh and down to the beach to check the surf, look for shells, and walk the dog. I asked Mom what she has loved most about her home of 18 years. Here’s just part of what she had to say: “I love the open floor plan; it’s light, bright, and great for entertaining. At the same time, the fireplace lends a nice, cozy feeling. I’ve used the fireplace quite a lot, even on some of our Junegloomy evenings. On the other hand, I’ve never felt the need for air conditioning because there’s always a nice offshore breeze. My house has plenty of storage, especially in the kitchen, and a walk-in closet in the master bedroom.” The park is named Silver Sands Village, and there is a village feel to it. There’s a pool with an outdoor kitchen and barbe-
cue, as well as a community clubhouse available to reserve for events. Silver Sands is also a safe place to live, with a team of CERT-trained residents ready to assist neighbors in emergency situations. When I asked Mom if there were any downsides to her little piece of paradise, she thought for a minute and responded, “Some people might not like the 7 a.m. alarm clock!” The Amtrak train to San Diego stops at the Carpinteria station every morning at seven. Other than that, Silver Sands is a very peaceful spot. Half the owners are part-timers, so it’s only on holiday weekends that there’s much traffic, which consists of families walking past on their way to the beach, pulling wagons loaded with umbrellas, sand toys, and children. It all made sense when Mom told me that the new home she is hoping to buy is also in Silver Sands Village. It’s a one-bedroom, one-bath space, so although we’ll be a little cozier on Thanksgiving, we’ll still get to enjoy the sunset views, the beach proximity, the neighbors in the village, and all the other perks that Mom loves. Come to think of it, if we reserve the clubhouse now, we can barbecue our Thanksgiving turkey poolside. I’m not sure why we haven’t thought of that before.

S.B. Wine Auction Raises Funds for Direct Relief and Community Health Centers

n February 15, more than 400 guests descended on the Ritz-Carlton Bacara for one of Santa Barbara’s most elegant, entertaining, and lucrative fundraisers: the Santa Barbara Vintners Foundation’s biennial Santa Barbara Wine Auction. As always, Direct Relief was a beneficiary, but unlike prior years, this year the paddle raise proceeds will go to Community Health Centers of the Central Coast (CHC). An estimate of total proceeds was not available, but the last event raised $1.1 million. At this black-tie-optional event, many guests opted in with a formal gown or tux and enjoyed mingling in the ballroom and foyer. They perused extensive silent auction offerings, many involving wine or winery experiences, while electric violinist Spags provided upbeat, energizing music. Guests enjoyed a four-course meal curated by Loquita Executive Chef Peter Lee featuring Wagyu short ribs. Thirteen wineries each bought an entire table and poured their own wine for guests. Another 22 wineries provided a table with wine and winemaker (generous Foxen Vineyard & Winery did both). Jim Clendenen and Frank Ostini each poured their 2,000 vintages for their lucky guests, and other prized bottles were poured throughout the room throughout the night. Emcee Billy Baldwin entertained and DawnMarie Kotsonis auctioned off 12 enticing lots, many involving wine and wineries. The Vintner Honoree Award went to Stolpman Vineyards for their generous treatment of their farmworkers. Founder Tom Stolpman wanted his farmworkers to have income security, so right from the start in 1992, he employed them year-round. Early on, as a training program, Vineyard Manager Ruben Solorzano gave a vineyard block to the workers to independently manage. Upon learning of the program and the workers’ success, Stolpman gave all the wine made from the block to the workers. In 2009, the generosity grew — wine from other blocks was combined with the workers’ block, and all profits from the sale of the wine went to the workers. The same year, management passed to Tom’s son, Peter Stolpman, and the tradition continues today.
Direct Relief provides medical resources to those afflicted by poverty or an emergency situation. It operates in about 100 countries and in all 50 states. Direct Relief has received many accolades, including as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies twice in the past four years and a 100 percent efficiency rating from them. Of the $1.1 billion in aid distributed last year, 83 percent went outside the U.S., and 90 percent was for nonemergency situations. Of the $1.4 billion Direct Relief received in contributions last year, 93 percent was in-kind donations. Previous event honoree Au Bon Climat founder, owner, and winemaker Jim Clendenen and Community Health Centers pro- Au Bon Climat General Manager Jim Adelman vides medical and dental care in San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara counties, focusing on the legions of medically underserved, through a network of 31 brick-and-mortar clinics and four mobile clinics. Last year, CHC served 110,000 unduplicated patients, including more than 40,000 farmworkers. Funds from the event are targeted for a new medical and dental clinic in Los Alamos serving primarily farmworkers that will open in the next month. Previously, the area was served only with mobile clinics. According to CEO Ronald Castle, CHC serves thousands of people who would otherwise have to use hospital emergency rooms for their medical needs. “
rt helps,” states Nathan Vonk unequivocally. “It’s there to make you happy. It’s a constant in times of trouble and change, and it’s something that you share with loved ones and friends.” Vonk is the gregarious owner of one of Santa Barbara’s greatest cultural institutions: Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery. Boasting an inventory of more than 3,000 oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, and sculptures, Sullivan Goss is a primary West Coast resource for those seeking to build private and public collections of important American art. On December 23, 2016, Vonk bought the business from its founder, Frank Goss, an icon in the Santa Barbara art world. “Frank and I worked for six months to make it happen,” Vonk explains. “Sullivan Goss is such a big part of the art community, and that’s why it was important for me to take it over and make sure it continued.” But soon after the election of 2016, Vonk became concerned about how things would work out. “People need stability to buy art,” he explains. “I wasn’t prepared for the reality of Trump being president.” As it turns out, that first year was one of the best for the gallery. But then the Thomas Fire and Montecito debris flow happened, and it took the gallery a year to recover. Fortunately, the business is flourishing today. Currently, Sullivan Goss is working on the most ambitious project in its history: a book that encompasses the career of painter Hank Pitcher. The galley previously published a tome on the late Ray Strong, but the Pitcher project is focused on a living painter and is 50 percent larger. “This book will catapult Hank,” declares Vonk. “We will be sending copies to curators and galleries, getting the word out nationally.” Vonk started working at Sullivan Goss in October 2008. “I was thinking of getting a PhD in art,” he explained. ”I decided to volunteer at the gallery instead. I came in on a Monday and was hired by Friday. Frank and I got along, for we’re both English majors. The only art history classes I’ve taken have been at SBCC. Everything else I learned on the job.” Vonk was born in rural Iowa, near Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. “I grew up on a farm on a road that is not paved to this day,” he says. “I was from a perfectly stereotypical Iowa place.” He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1996. “What I wanted to do was astronomy,” he confesses. “I was really into Stephen Hawking. I liked his big ideas. I soon had to come to terms that studying physics and astronomy was simply a romantic notion.” Instead, he majored in English at Reed College, where the
I am traveling to new or far-off places. This could be a long road trip around the country or an adventure on the other side of the globe. I used to do this a lot when I was younger, but I don’t get to do it as often as I would like these days. I love the idea of waking and up in the morning and having no idea where I might end up that day, of being able to be with the spontaneous and creating opportunity for serendipity. Being able to do that with my wife and son would be the greatest joy.
Talking Art Business Owner of Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery unofficial motto was “Atheism, Communism, and Free Love.” Nathan was interested in narrative theory, and his undergrad thesis was on James Joyce’s Ulysses. After graduation in 2002, he moved to Portland, Oregon, and worked as a valet at a hotel. Then he was invited by a friend, who was a reporter for the Ventura County Star, to go to Burning Man, the prominent festival that’s an experiment in community and art. “I was fascinated by the enormous, resource-intensive art projects that are then gone forever,” Vonk recalls. “I found that fascinating. That propelled my interest in art.” In 2003, he went to grad school in Brighton, England, at the University of Sussex. “It was there that I dove into the arts,” he explains. “The campus was only one hour from London, and I visited galleries and museums and taught myself art.” He finished his dissertation early so he could go back to Burning Man the following year. Then he came to Santa Barbara, following artists who’d participated in the festival; they’re still some of his closest friends, including Alan Macy of SBCAST. In 2004, he got a job at Ventura College as an adjunct professor. “My job was not to teach the students what to think but how to think,” he explains. He also worked during the day as a dog walker for Paws Over Santa Barbara, eventually buying the business and making it profitable. “I’m very happy how things turned out,” he reflects. “The dog business is part of a long series of happenstances that led me to buying Sullivan Goss. I’d never imagined my career path. I’ve always winged things, and I’ve always gotten lucky.” Six years ago, Vonk married Erin Smith, a special ed preschool teacher. They met 15 years ago at The Press Room. She was reading Shakespeare from the same edition he owned. They have a son named Lowen, who is now in kindergarten. “The most fun about being an art dealer is finding the perfect home for a work of art,” says Vonk. “When you find the right match, you’re making the buyer happy but also supporting the artist and his family. You’re helping the art ecosystem thrive.”

What do you like most about your job? I enjoy helping people discover new passions, whether that be for a particular artist or era or aesthetic. I love watching as people who come into the gallery get excited to learn more about what they saw here. These are things that I am passionate about, so it is really exciting to share that with others, and to see that it connects with them. Alternatively, if someone comes in looking for pieces to add to an established collection, I get the pleasure of joining them on their treasure hunt by helping them look for things that will get them excited. What is your greatest fear? Mental illness. I love reading,
learning, and thinking about all sorts of crazy ideas. I’m most afraid of anything that would remove my ability to do these things. Who do you most admire? Greta Thunberg. She has to be one
of the most badass, courageous people on the planet.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I was better at remembering people’s names. What do you consider your greatest achievement? Buying
Sullivan Goss from Frank and Tricia Goss three years ago. I hadn’t planned on becoming a gallery owner and would have been perfectly happy working for Frank for the rest of my life. But he had earned his retirement, and I thought it would be a terrible loss to the community if Sullivan Goss were to close its doors. So, we found a way to keep the legacy going. What is your most treasured possession? A collection of 50
or so 35mm slides from the ’50s and ’60s that I found at Art From Scrap years ago. It was all from one family, and I spent hours looking through hundreds of slides to find my favorites. There are photos of summer vacations in National Parks, Christmas Day, a sweet 16 birthday party, and high school prom. And the same family members show up over and over again through the years. I have no idea who the people are, but I bought a slide projector and bring them out every so often to marvel at them. On what occasion do you lie? When I tell myself I shouldn’t
buy a piece of art.

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES
OUR Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® is pleased that the Santa Barbara City Council agreed this week to take a measured approach before considering whether to take action to further tighten the tenant-landlord laws beyond those already in place.
Unfortunately, many landlords are already considering selling their rentals, and adding another layer of regulation might just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. This will further decrease the availability of rental housing, which would hurt those most in need.

REALTORS® represent both tenants and landlords, and we are very concerned about the unintended consequences of pushing forward with another level of regulation regarding rental property. Most recently in effect is the statewide rent cap of 5% plus CPI (consumer price index); locally, implemented last fall, are just cause and the requirement to offer a mandatory year lease renewal (for tenants in the property more than one year) – all very big changes within the last six months. Rent caps and the like are artificial market constraints, put in place with the intention of “tenant protection.” Likewise, the local (City of Santa Barbara) requirement for landlords to “offer” a mandatory one-year lease, intended to provide security and continuity for a tenant, beyond the mutually agreed upon timeframe in heretofore reliable contracts.
If this occurs, in a market already suffering from lack of inventory, these units will be gobbled up by pentup buyer demand, most likely owner-occupants, and not investors. There would be even less rental inventory to choose from, increasing competition, and leaving those out with marginal credit and less options. Property owners who remain in the business of providing housing will be even more selective to whom they rent, and we are already seeing new leases with built-in rent increases (another unintended consequence of the statewide rent cap). Those tenants who have lived peacefully without frequent rent increases can now expect this unintended consequence. With so many new regulations in place, we are pleased that local officials agreed to take a measured approach. We hope they will participate in educating both tenants and landlords about the new laws, and then evaluate whether the current legislation has accomplished what it set out to do, before adding anything further to dissuade property owners from providing housing and unintentionally harming those who desperately need it.
