Some places inspire the best in each of us. They have the power to bring focus, to draw people together, to change our perspectives, and to launch great ideas. For nearly 100 years, Ojai Valley Inn & Spa has been such a destination. And this season we’re excited to open additions and transformations of some key spaces at the Inn. These include an expanded welcome experience in the lobby, re-imagined pools and landscaping for enhanced privacy and views of the valley, and fully renewed restaurant concepts — highlighting the Inn as a major culinary stage. What could you do with a moment away? Call 844-252-2733 to reserve your time.

Letter

from the

Editor Happy April! I have always started the first day of each month waking up and saying “Rabbit Rabbit” for good luck. Our last April issue was my first issue as editor-inchief. It’s been a long year of both good luck–finding dedicated team members, producing beautiful issues, drinking champagne on the beach during surreal sunsets–as well as less than lucky moments– flat tires en route to an event, rain during a resort wear shoot, and most recently, at this month’s Into The Woods shoot, one too many team hammock selfies for a certain tree branch. But we’ve made it through all of it, now smarter and more connected, with more laughter and champagne filled afternoons, and more apprehension for tree branches. Looking back to last April, I could not have imagined being in the place we are now. And thinking back to a year before that

(probably somewhere in Tulum without a care in the world) the thought of co-owning a startup magazine and collaborating with some of the coolest people in SoCal was unfathomable. As luck would have it, that is where I’m at today. It’s refreshing to realize that despite the plans we may have for ourselves, our journey is organic. This issue is about refreshing your life–from what you wear (we were lusting over the shoes and sunglasses in Step Into Spring) to what throw pillows are on your couch (E Madison just opened a store in Montecito and it’s going to show in our living rooms). The team had a lot of fun putting it together and we hope you enjoy flipping through. By the way, we hid a tiny rabbit somewhere in the April issue this year. Good luck!

MORE THAN A FISH OUT OF WATER

I

t’s 15 minutes before hair and makeup begins, Lakey Peterson is running down the road, face red from exertion, ponytail swinging side to side, no concerns but what’s right in front of her. In the ensuing hours I will get a glimpse into her life–from a few happy quirkinesses to a brand new fitness blog. She is a world ranked surfer, but this 20-year-old Santa Barbara local is more than your average professional athlete. In this feature we dive into what defines Lakey, a fierce competitor with the highest of ambitions, but also a gracious and down to earth world traveler who is so much more than what you might expect.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 13

Are you more of a peace sign or a shaka? [Laughs] Well, I guess you would have to say more of shaka because I’m a surfer. But if you saw me out of the water I’m more of a peace sign. Lifestyle is more shaka but Lakey is more peace sign!

What has been the biggest personal reward from being a professional surfer? Seeing hard work and effort pay off because I work really hard and I sacrifice a lot to do what I do. Continuing to progress and being able to help people–the hard work is worth all of it.

In its most rudimentary form, how has surfing changed for you since you first started? That’s a cool question. I didn’t start surfing until a little later so everything happened pretty quickly. It was a really short time frame; I was 11 and a half when I started and I went pro when I was 17. From the beginning until now I’ve finally caught up on some experiences, waves, and traveling that I wasn’t exposed to when I was younger. A lot of the other girls that I’m surfing against have done it since they were 3. I finally feel like I have the experience now, a better understanding of what it’s all about. Where as before last year I was really new to all that.

Your healthy living blog project seems pretty big and has a few elements. How did the development of the blog come about? I have always loved nutrition, health, and working out so that has been my niche and where the idea came from. I was chatting about it with Pia, my PR girl, at the beginning of the year. I was saying I want to do something this year and something a bit different. I always thought about a blog but I thought I’d do it way later, almost after my career. But we both were like why don’t we do it now, we have the platform to do it, I’m meeting amazing healthy people, finding incredible products, and traveling the world…so it just kind of happened! I want to be a nutritionist someday and a trainer. So it’s awesome for that. I feel like it’s a good way to help people.

What for you is the most exciting thing about the release or just the blog in general? Just to show people healthy ways of living. People think that to be super fit, get really healthy or to get in shape you have to be at the gym everyday. To some extent that’s true, but I’ll be showing people there’s a healthy way of whatever, making cookies for example, so you can eat good food that tastes good and is feeding your body in a good way. It’s educating people and for me that’s really exciting. The more I learn the more I’m like wow it’s incredible what you can do to your body with how you eat and how active you are–the way it makes you feel is awesome!

What are the elements of your blog? It will have nutrition and health, fitness and body movement, style, and cool video and photo content. It’s not going to be a fitness program. I do have an amazing trainer and I’ve worked with a lot of amazing physios. I’ll have really great warm-ups

you can do for whatever sport you play. I’m going to highlight certain things that I feel are great, like this thing I do called foundation, which teaches people how to move their bodies correctly. I want to highlight simple easy ways to kickstart yourself so you’re functioning your body properly. From there I will do one offs of little workouts. It’ll be more along the lines of really small stuff but really beneficial. Also, I will have a lot of great products that I love to use. I’ll have all of my green powders, protein powders, and natural herbs that I take. I’m really excited about this part because there’s a lot of things that people don’t know about but hopefully they will after reading my blog. Things like where to get a really good protein for them, or a really great sunscreen that’s natural and organic. So that part of it will be really cool, and also being able to highlight other people’s work that I love.

For you is there a primary target group? I want it to reach everyone, because I am a woman I feel it will target young girls and women and that’s my audience at the moment anyways. I think it will mostly be 18-30’s. I think it will start with people that know me as a surfer then I would hope that it goes a little mainstream and that anyone can get inspired by it.

Why do you think it’s important to focus on all of these elements with the blog instead of just having surf instructions or just workouts? Healthy is an entire package of what you eat, what you do, how you live, eliminating stress, and how to live happy–you need to have everything, the complete package, to live really well. It’s inspiring people in every aspect because I don’t believe it’s just one thing.

You have obviously achieved a lot for a 20-year-old. What keeps you from becoming complacent, what makes you hungry for more? What makes me hungry for more is that I haven’t achieved the goals that I personally set for myself. Maybe from the outside I have achieved or done so much. That might be true to an extent but I personally I have these visions for myself and places I want to go. Until I hit those goals I will always be hungry. And once I hit those goals I’ll probably have another one.

What’s left on your bucket list? I really want to do Machu Picchu! I’ve been to Peru I just haven’t done it. This is going to sound crazy, but I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon. The bucket list goes on and on, I want to go to Croatia. I want to go on a Safari….

Of all the places you’ve been able to visit are there one or two that stand above the rest, like iconic spots that seem unimaginable? There is this chain of islands called the Mentawai Islands out in Indonesia, it’s like every surfer’s dream to get there. It’s really far away and really hard to get to. Once you get there you’re on a boat, there are land camps but we stayed on the boat for 12 days or so. It’s just…I always joke around saying that it looks like a screen saver! It’s so beautiful and the waves are the best in the world, it’s just insane. And you’re on this boat with your friends, just some of the best memories ever out there for sure. I always love going to Europe too! I love Portugal, it’s incredible.

How, if at all, has taking on this traveling lifestyle changed you as a person? Traveling has changed me in a lot of ways. I basically haven’t stopped traveling since I was 16. It has been a continuous thing. I’m 20 now and those are crucial years of maturing and becoming who you are. For me traveling and being on the road all that time, instead of being in high school or at college, made me mature a lot quicker because I had to. I was automatically in these cultures, meeting people, figuring out flights, booking rental cars, and all this stuff, so it really has helped me understand this world, how it operates and how to connect with people on a personal level, see their culture, and interact.

Has that made you feel differently about Santa Barbara at all? Yeah it has made me really appreciative of Santa Barbara. I mean I grew up here and it’s such an amazing place–you have the mountains, the surf and restaurants–it’s insane! Until I really experienced a lot of other places I never realized how special Santa Barbara is and just the culture and the community of it. It has really given me an appreciation of where I come from and this place.

What’s you favorite wave in Santa Barbara? Rincon Point, which is where I live. It’s coined as the best wave in California so I guess we are lucky. Lucky to have it.

What spots in Santa Barbara are ones that make it home to you? I grew up right by the Butterfly Beach wall, so I guess there and Hammonds Meadow. Hammond’s beach is where I learned to surf, so all that area.

You seem very adamant about vocalizing your faith. Why is it important to you for people to be aware of your faith? I try and act it more than preach it. When I meet people, I hate when they are telling me how I should act or what I did wrong. Because I don’t think that’s what any faith is about. It’s more of who you are and how you treat people and that speaks louder than any words you could say. I just try to live it and I believe it. I want to encourage people to live happy and healthy. For me that’s having faith. The real message I want to send is to enjoy life, look at positives, and be good to those around you. There’s so much anger in the world, people are rushed and mad. For me it’s more just trying to be nice to each other and for me faith backs that.

You seem very family oriented. How do you stay connected to your family when you’re globetrotting? It’s a bit tricky sometimes because I don’t see my family for months on end. My brother and sister are awesome, they always call me, watch my heats and support me. It’s hard because I miss them but sometimes they get to come with me which is a lot of fun.

You take an active role in philanthropy and various causes. Why is that important to you? I’ve been able to travel so much from a young age so I’ve been really exposed to a lot of different cultures. I’ve been exposed to crazy poverty and nothingness as well as really wealthy places and people. I’ve seen the full spectrum of life and I’ve experienced it first hand. I realize how much need there is in the world. If you don’t travel you don’t see that, it’s easy think, “Life is perfect, life is great.” But when you see it first hand and you meet these people who need clean water or food or whatever it is, it makes you really want to help them and you know you can and you see how much you truly have. The traveling part and seeing it first hand has really driven me to have an impact. I’ve got a little bit of a platform, because I’m a pro surfer, and I’ve got a little bit of reach, I might as well take advantage of that.

When people describe you as a professional surfer and nothing else does that bother you? Do you want your name to be associated with more than surfing? Yeah, I don’t want to be looked at as just this surfer girl and that’s all people know me as. I feel like this happens for actors, singers, any kind of person that has one driven thing in their life. I get categorized as, “Oh yeah that’s Lakey Peterson the surfer girl.” I hear people say that a lot. It’s cool because I am the surfer girl, or however you want to say it, but at the same time there’s so much more to life that I want to be doing and that I want to be about. It’s a constant thing trying to continue to have more to me than just surfing and I want people to see that. It’s more than going out and just surfing. There’s a lot of training and traveling and lot more that goes into it, at the same time I understand why people reference that to me.

Through competing professionally who as a competitor have you learned the most from? I think I’ve learned a lot from Stephanie Gilmore who’s number one in the world currently. She’s a bit older than me, 27, and she’s been doing it a lot longer than I have. Before I was a pro surfer I always looked up to her a lot. It’s funny because I used to have her poster on my wall, like a signed poster from her, and now I complete against her, I’m trying to smoke her in a heat. It’s really good to be competitive and I’m extremely competitive, but I think for a while I was holding on to it too tight and was missing out on life a little bit. If I lost it would just destroy me and destroy my whole experience of where I was. But I’ve learned a lot, Stephanie has a really good way of being like alright it’s alright and she enjoys it and moves on. Watching her go through the motions of that was really encouraging to me and I learned how to compete and go with the flow of things a little bit better.

What’s your entourage like when you’re on tour? I have my coach, Mike Parsons, who comes with me everywhere. It’s great because he’s also my manager. Then depending on where I am, I’ll either have my boyfriend, my sister, some sort of family member or a friend. Also Hurley has a team manager who is there to help and I usually have a photographer or filmer. Everyone that I bring with me I’m really close with. They all feel like family, they all feel like friends, it’s really good we have a fun time together.

What’s the first thing you reach for when you get out of the water? My towel!

What’s your favorite out of water thing to do? I love hiking. Hiking is really fun, especially here, it’s so beautiful to go up in the mountains. I love journaling and decompressing and reading, having my own time because I don’t always have that time to myself. So out of the water just like decompressing in that way.

Are you more of a fist bump or a high five? High five!

Are you more of a SnapBack or a beanie? Beanie!

What’s your comfort food? Pizza, fully comfort food. Locally the Lucky Penny is so bomb! That place is amazing! But in terms of ingredients I like veggie pizzas; I love a lot of grilled veggies and then arugula on top. I don’t get to eat pizza very often but it’s a total comfort food. I thought of a quirkiness! I love to have random dance parties. Just like throw it on. Someone will walk in and I’m like uhh sorry, I’m just dancing.

healthy living

FRESH START with PRESSED JUICERY

Written by Kore Busath-Haedt

S

pring cleaning” is not only a time to restore your household, but also your body. It is a time to revisit your New Year’s Resolutions, revitalize and refresh your motivation behind these intentions, and start living your ideal life. We decided to draw inspiration from a man who has devoted every aspect of himself to the mission of healthy living. Hayden Slater, co-founder and CEO of Pressed Juicery, described to us how

30 | APRIL 2015

he made the change to a healthier, happier lifestyle. Hayden was motivated in college by an eye opening yoga teacher to commit to a nutritious lifestyle. Soon after, he traveled to Asia and experienced his first juice cleanse. “I knew that I wanted to continue to recreate the way I felt while I was on my cleanse for both myself and for others.” Founding Pressed Juicery in the summer of 2010 with two of his childhood best friends allowed him to do just that.

1

Listen to your body. Previously a fast food junkie, and sixty pounds heavier, Hayden was not always the health guru that he is today. “Honestly, for me it’s been all about baby steps. Getting out of my head, as we all have a tendency to think a little bit too much, and just listen to my body and make choices that feel right. Ultimately those are the choices that stick.”

2

Set feasible goals. Surround yourself with people and things that will help, not hinder, your positive intentions. “Make small attainable changes, both physically and mentally. A journey to health and fitness is a combination of exercising and eating right but just as important, it is about creating a positive environment for yourself to achieve your goals.”

3

More fruits and veggies. Diet trends are changing constantly, but the truth is that there is not one “right” way to eat. Customize your diet to what makes you feel your best; introducing more unprocessed produce is an immediate upgrade to any dietary style. “Everyone has a different body and what works for one person may not work for another. I think it’s important to try out different diets and just continue with whatever you respond well to. I am an advocate for adding fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet period, and juicing is a great way to do this.”

It takes a shift of mindset to begin living clean, and that is not always easy. Hayden Slater, co-founder and CEO of Pressed Juicery, shared with us a few tips on how to start living clean this spring!

4 Don’t forget to sweat it out. Take a break from the treadmill, your mind and body will thank you for a change of scenery. “I believe that true health and wellness comes from a well-rounded, balanced lifestyle. I lead an active lifestyle and try to exercise most days. The key for me is mixing up my routine, whether it’s spinning, yoga or enjoying one of the many outdoor workouts Southern California has to offer, it’s important to switch it up.”

5

Me time. Do what you love. Stress not only has negative effects on your body, but it clouds your mind and makes it hard to focus your energy on positive intentions. “My work days are extremely busy and I’m often on the road, so I have to make it a priority to take some time for myself each day. I always make it a priority to squeeze in something that is personally rewarding like spending time with friends and family, volunteer work, or seeing a new sight in a city I might be visiting for a business meeting.”

6

It’s a lifestyle, not a race to the finish line. Living a healthy life is like running a business, it takes a steady and constant commitment. “What excites me the most is that there really isn’t a right or wrong way. We just need to continue to be open to endless opportunities. For me, I have learned that life is truly about bettering ourselves and the exciting thing is that there is no finish line.” *

DREAM I

f you have been noticing little cravings to bring fresh new prints into your home, rearrange your furniture around a cowhide rug, or just dress up your dresser with new hardware, you have a lot of company. With HGTV reruns on repeat, regular detours through the home sections every shopping trip, and our home decorating boards racking up pins, we still can’t get enough home styling! We think spring is the perfect time to freshen up your spaces with a mix of timeless and trend-hugging additions and renovations--and we all know that Santa Barbara has style.

SPACE Turning your Pinterest into your place Written by Rah Riley

If you’re considering a full home or even just a single room renovation, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with ideas and inspiration. And it can be challenging to describe in words the look you’re going for. Design blogs and Pinterest boards are brilliant– they’re speaking our language with flawless high-resolution spaces. From exposed white brick walls and mosaic tile fireplaces, down to tiny bedside succulents and the plush fur throw casually strewn over a modern armchair. Pinterest has changed the design game–both for those of us revamping our rooms every season and for the brilliant designers who make our visions and Pinterest boards come to life.

SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 59

60 | APRIL 2015

“We can start from the bottom up–frame to fabric. Some people come in for something as small as a new throw pillow and some to completely renovate their home. They can say ‘this is the look I want’ and we can make that happen from the floor plan, all the way to the smallest details.” Courtney and Anthony Dever are the husband and wife partnership behind E Madison, a new local source for beautiful home décor. “Interior architecture is the heart of E Madison,” Courtney beams, and I can tell this is what makes her tick. As interior designers, their passion is obvious, not only for beautiful design, but for this beautiful community as well. From the moment you step inside one of their locations, a warm ambiance makes you feel right at home. And you may just want to take everything in their store, a curated collection of the most wonderful things, and make them a part of your own home. So what are their secrets to stellar design? Whether you’re just dreaming about a design reno or your online shopping carts are overflowing and idling at the checkout, Courtney recommends looking at the big picture. When you’re in a redesign Pinterest frenzy, take a step back and lay out entire boards to both recognize your pinning trends and to begin narrowing the look that you really want. Then, be intentional about going out and looking at items off screen. There can be a big difference in your design preferences looking at blog of a (possibly staged) living room, and actually walking among raw edge coffee tables, touching wallpaper, and sinking into Mad Men worthy sofas. When clients meet with E Madison, they bring three images and the team goes from there. Be it an entire home or simply choosing the right light fixture for a room, this free consultation can be the jump from home ware daydreams to living in a space that is more than pin worthy. You can visit E Madison in Ladera Ranch and, now, Montecito! Anthony and Courtney are thrilled to bring E Madison to beautiful Montecito. “Our doors are open and we are so excited to be in Santa Barbara and meet some great new people.”

Simple Spring Design Tips!

Courtesy of Courtney Dever with E Madison Keep it Clean There are always trends going in and out of style, but the most consistent color choice I gravitate towards is clean white with an accent of black. Colors of the Season Color is most appealing to the eye when used as accents – which explains why tossing a soft aqua throw pillow onto a crisp white couch is so satisfying! Blue tones are really popular this season, as well as a soft blush rose. And the rose tones are extremely flattering against the bronzed skin tones of spring! To bring instant life into a room, fill a vase with beautiful pink flowers and let it do its thing. Candlelight Candles are one of the easiest ways to change the whole atmosphere of your home. Not only will they make everywhere smell lovely, they can permeate a room by breathing life into the space. *

et it be said that I am not one for grocery shopping. I always get so confused by the extensive options available and the brightly colored brand logos tend to blind me from both sides of the aisles. I usually leave exhausted and wondering how I ended up buying $24 worth of hemp milk when all I came for was some bell peppers and a loaf of bread. That is, until I visited the Santa Barbara Public Market. My world has shifted to reveal new hope that some day I will be able to buy the proper ingredients to prepare a savory home-cooked meal all thanks to this incredibly cool one-stop-shop.

chocolate caramel sundae on this hot sunny day is making my mouth water as I peruse the frozen treat options. Rori’s Ice Creamery is known for its decadent milkshakes and pleasantly surprising flavor combinations, and the smell of the waffle cones floats around the store, tempting many shoppers to come try a taste. Everything looks so divine that I have to seriously peel myself away from the counter.

The second stop that quickly draws me in is Crazy Good Bread. Set out in rows behind the counter are dozens of warm loaves of crackled bread waiting to be picked up and whisked into delicious concoctions. Combinations like the lemon country loaf The Santa Barbara Public Market is tucked and the rosemary olive loaf draw shoppers away on the corner of Chapala and Victoria in and I can see why. Across the seating areas I spy two of my favorite food categories: Santa Monica Seafood and The Pasta Shoppe. I immediately head over towards the seafood, eager to explore the countless options. Anything you could ever want is laid out on ice, including scallops, crab, and lobster. The fish is garnished with curls of lemon and sage, and it smells like the ocean has been brought to my fingertips. The tuna tartare looks freshly seasoned and I love being able to either buy the fresh caught seafood raw at the store or enjoy it for lunch immediately. Interestingly enough, the atmosphere completely changes as I step over to The Pasta Shoppe, where the smell of seafood has been replaced with the scent of freshly floured pasta and gnocchi. The bright red and green hues are incredible, and one of the things I love about pasta is the different variations you can play with to create a beautiful dinner. The chef is hand shaping all of the noodles in front of me and I can’t help but be mesmerized. Monthly events also keep the atmosphere alive. In February, a food pairing event showed shoppers how certain seafood from Santa Monica Seafood and cheese from The Culture Counter would pair deliciously with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from Wine + Beer, and even featured collaborations between shop owners. bread pudding. Rori’s Ice Creamery has also collaborated with Enjoy Cupcakes to create whimsical desserts like oatmeal raisin cookie dough ice cream. The market also plans to continue with cooking classes and celebrating all that is seasonal, organic, and appetizing. As demonstrated by the sense of community I feel between the shop owners, the Santa Barbara Public Market is one of those places you go if you want to know exactly where your food is coming from. On top of everything, the market is LEED certified, meaning it was built using sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. The market takes everything enjoyable from the normal grocery shopping experience and catapults it to a whole new level. No confusing brands or psychological row placement strategies, just pure artisanal appreciation for food and the love that comes with buying it. I begrudgingly head out into the warm sunny afternoon downtown, sad that I must leave this delightful food Mecca. Yet, blissfully I know I will*be back soon when the urge to enjoy fantastic food strikes! Santa Barbara Public Market 38 W Victoria Street 805-770-7702 sbpublicmarket.com

ennie Stierwalt knows how to dress, and out of everyone in The Coffee Bean, it is obvious she is who I’m supposed to meet. She is captivating with her effortlessly curled caramel ombre hair and dressed impeccably in a white sun hat, destroyed jeans and classy cream wedges, she looks like a fashion icon straight out of Vogue. I walk over and Jennie immediately introduces herself. She also introduces somebody I had not noticed before coming up to her, which happens to be the adorable ball of curly fur known as Indigo, her eight-and-a-half-week-old Golden Doodle puppy sitting calmly on her lap. As we start to chat, a few customers waiting for their coffees giggle admiringly at the stunner and her pup, something I’m sure she is quite used to by now.

Sipping a hot dirty chai latte, she goes into detail about how much she has loved fashion and dressing her friends ever since a young age. Add shopping for vintage clothes throughout college, styling for big names like Free People, and analyzing which proportions fit for which trends, and you have the makings of a truly knowledgeable and successful personal stylist and image consultant. Jennie takes fashion advice to an intimate level by delving into what concepts look good on real people rather than just the runway, and uses her experience with closets that can sometimes seem like black holes. Starting off with a free phone consultation, she will evaluate what you are looking for and have you brainstorm any changes you think might need to be made. She will then go through your closet with you and determine which pieces to keep, tailor to fit you better, or toss. As an image consultant, Jennie is firm in explaining that what you want to buy might not necessarily be what you need and it might also not be as timeless as you think. You don’t always need new clothing; You just need the best basics for your body that you can spice up with character pieces. She also analyzes what will look good on you in terms of color and fabric. Jennie points out how I have pink undertones in the skin on my face and suggests that I do not wear pinks to avoid looking washed out. I also have green eyes and she mentions that when people wear colors that match their eyes, it comes off as very soothing and nice to look at. I ask what she thinks of my favorite style of tight pants and leather ankle boots, and she enthusiastically agrees that the combination is classic, but also advises me to step out of my comfort zone and try the booties with a flowing floral shift dress since the weather is getting warmer. Her newest craze is the 70’s approach to pants and dresses, with vibrant psychedelic patterns, simple tees and fringe, black and white graphic prints, and chic wide leg trousers.

Jennie is no ordinary fashion guru. Her background in high-end fashion styling may lead you to believe that she only works with famous brands and stick thin models, yet that is anything but the case. Her true passion is not following trends but instead finding the perfect fit for your body type and jazzing up your wardrobe. With a few key pieces to reignite your personal spark, Jennie’s main goal is to help you feel beautiful in what you’re wearing. She is the best friend you want supporting you when shopping, being honest about what is going to look great and making you feel even more confident wearing items you never would have put together. That passion is the reason she founded Your Best Self Stylist and has helped hundreds of women discover their flair and clean out unneeded apparel from their closets. Often times, women feel overwhelmed and stressed out thinking about putting together outfits, and that stress can affect their outlooks on life. Jennie is the perfect solution to not only taking care of your dress dilemmas but also putting you back on track for confidence and success. She has so much experience with the history of fashion and I can tell even from just speaking with her for a little bit that she truly cares about making her clients feel special from the inside out. Instead of advising her clients to spend unnecessary money on clothing that will fade out of style, Jennie reorganizes their closets and ultimately, their lives. * Jennie Stierwalt yourbestselfstylist.com 925-360-4570

DISH IT UP A simple monthly recipe, to try at home, from our team to you.

Cioppino 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon of clarified butter (ghee) 1 chopped green bell pepper 1 large fennel bulb, thinly sliced 1 yellow onion, chopped 4 large shallots, chopped 3 teaspoons sea salt 5 large garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1 fresh squeezed lemon 1/4 cup tomato paste 1 (28-ounce) can whole tomatoes 1 1/2 cups Sauvignon Blanc 4 cups seafood stock 1 bay leaf 1 1/2 pounds littleneck clams, scrubbed 1 pound mussels, scrubbed

1 pound uncooked large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 1/2 pounds halibut & sea bass (any firm fish will do), cut into 1/2-inch chunks Chopped parsley for garnish Crusty garlic bread for serving

Directions:

Using a large pot, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the fennel, bell pepper, onion, shallots, and sea salt and sauté until the onion is translucent. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes, and sauté. Stir in the tomato paste. Add tomatoes with their juices, wine, fish stock, and bay leaf. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Tip: make this part the night before, to allow all flavors to blend. Add the fish and shrimp and allow to cook for several minutes. Add the clams and mussels to the cooking liquid. Cover and cook until the clams and mussels begin to open, about 5 minutes. Simmer gently until the fish and shrimp are just cooked through, and the clams are completely open. Season the soup, to taste, with more salt and red pepper flakes. Squeeze fresh lemon over the top of the cioppino and garnish with fresh chopped parsley. SALON AND STYLE BAR

MAKEUP by Rose Makeup artist Rose Serrano created this beautiful, bold look, perfect for spring! To bring out Roxanne’s blue eyes, she brushed on lavender shimmer eyeshadow and layered black mascara on the top and bottom lashes. She then enhanced her cheekbones by contoring lightly with bronzer and applying blush. Lastly, a nude lip gloss completed the look.

HAIR by Kalib

To achieve these messy, sexy waves, hairstylist Kalib Varela began by curling Roxanne’s hair. He used a medium hold hair spray to set the loose curls and then proceeded to brush out her hair with a paddle brush. For added texture, Kalib sprinkled a generous amount of Kevin Murphy Powder Puff Volumising Powder and flipped her hair for even more volume. He then pinned off a section of her hair to finish the casual side swept look.
