What’s exciting for me about this May issue is that it’s our twelfth print issue! I remember seeing a post on Instagram several months ago that was of Glamour Magazine’s last twelve issues and couldn’t wait for the time to come when this baby magazine had a full year of issues I could hold. Get ready for an issue packed with everything from summer cocktails, to chic conversation pieces, to education in Kenya, to reality TV celebs.
In the new bi-montly Women Making Waves feature, be inspired by Teri and everything she’s done to improve education and health for young girls in Kenya. On the fashion front, California Vintage came about when Meadow and I were taking a quick break from location scouting and stopped in The Blue Door, only to find the perfect location! Sometimes the best way to find what you’re really looking for is to stop and enjoy the moment. No better place to do so than Alberto Battaglini’s bar
in S.Y. Kitchen! In A Pomegranate Walks into A Bar… the whole is greater than the sum of its parts – the location, the setting, the artistry, the crafter, the drinks – coming together for not only a great cocktail but an experience in itself. An experience that I’ll make sure to put on my summer checklist more than once. Not to mention, it’s a great way to get in the season’s freshest fruit ;) The Lark, as you know, is not just a novelty or a trend, but somewhere to go again and again. They’ve found a way to make fine dining feel like comfort food and vise versa – you feel at home and somewhere exciting and new all at once. The Lark will have you drooling over the Roasted Beets & Buratta! In Tuesday With Tanya the flair and exuberance that Tanya brings to this issue alone is an example of the entertainment to come in the new season of her show Unusually Thicke. Yet another talented, confident and unfiltered personality that made me laugh and brought excitement to this issue!

Teri Gabrielsen Warrior for Girls’ Education

The Journey Matters A line was literally “drawn in the sand” more than 15 years ago when Teri Gabrielsen and her family were on safari in Kenya. Teri was struck by the sight of what Chief Kamete called his “school,” five Maasai boys under a tree writing the alphabet with a stick in the dirt. Teri recalls, “At that moment, I knew I’d return to Kenya to help Kamete provide an opportunity for these children to go to school. What I hadn’t fully realized was how critical education would be to the essential health and welfare of the Maasai girls.” Innovation Through Cultural Collaboration In 2007, Africa Schools of Kenya (ASK) was formed and Teri, a wife, mother and former teacher, began her work in Esiteti, Kenya. Teri quickly realized that education is a privilege reserved primarily for boys in the Maasai culture. For girls, education is prematurely interrupted around puberty when a coming of age ceremony is celebrated involving the ritual of female genital cutting and early marriage. Teri instinctively knew that the key to change would be found in her ability to listen and educate the community about the health risks of the ritual and an individual’s right to an education. “The result,” said Teri, “was a better informed people who, along with the Chief, chose an ‘alternative rite of passage’ that resulted in no cutting and emphasized education as a young woman’s coming of age.”
WARDROBE BY
Wave of the Future The alternative rite of passage (ARP) program adopted by the Maasai people of Esiteti now takes place three times a year and is facilitated by Maasai women. 1269 Coast Village Road, Montecito Since its launch in 2012, there have been over 220 female ARP graduates. 805-563-2425 “Studies have shown that educating girls is the single most effective way to raise allorabylaura.com overall economic productivity, lower infant and maternal mortality, improve HAIR & MAKEUP BY nutrition, and promote health. We’re encouraged by the participation and believe the ARP model gives both Maasai men and women a personal stake in preserving the health and future of their people. By duplicating the ARP Hair by Andrea, Makeup by Elizabeth program throughout Kenya, we have the opportunity to reach 13,000 Maasai 1250 Coast Village Road, Montecito 805-969-6700 girls a year! That would be a dream come true,” exclaims Teri. shineblowdrybar.com

I step into The Blue Door, and am immediately transported to a different century. As I turn each corner I enter another completely new time, style, and personality of the boutique. One frame is reminiscent of my grandmother’s living room, scattered with lacy odds and ends. The next is sleek and modern, accented with a white shaggy pillow that catches my eye. I could get lost in all of these knick knacks for hours, assigning a back story to each lived-in piece of furniture, sparkling cocktail glass, and illuminated lampshade. By the time I have explored the three floors I have found mid-century to industrial pieces and everything inbetween. Local art, and shimmering jewelry pop against the vintage and rustic tones of the space. Old and new pieces mingle in this locally sourced, community based store, radiating a true sense of Santa Barbara history. The Blue Door is another wonder of the Funk Zone where any passer-by or collector will find a melting pot of vintage and modern hidden Santa Barbara treasures.

t’s just past dusk on a Thursday, aka the new Friday, and the Funk Zone is bursting with eccentric energy. Yet, the true place to be is The Lark. Nestled in the heart of the up-andcoming neighborhood, the space is reminiscent of a Venice Beach hot spot due to its undeniable cool-factor. The rustic-industrial interior is perfectly matched with vast open space, inviting the freshness of the Santa Barbara air to reach both indoor and outdoor diners, creating a divine setting. As the breeze shifts directions, and candlelight begins to dance, fragrant aromas of intermingling flavors sneak in with an irresistible charm. That’s it, The Lark has me. I have been converted. The place is on point. There’s not much Santa Barbarians love more than the slice of heaven we proudly call home. Where local is better, and supporting mom & pop businesses is in, we relish in all the wonders SB holds. The Lark, clearly takes advantage of the values we hold near and dear to our hearts. It manages to embody the local culture, while dressing it up with decadence, in the best way possible. Chef Jason Paluska’s inspired menu is crafted with fragments of memories from various travels. The result is a melting pot of flavors, whose pairing is executed with unparalleled precision.

Mojito, Old Fashioned, Hummingbird
I join my party outside, and am pleasantly surprised by the miniature fire pit that is positioned directly behind me…it’s like they knew. The rest of the patio is adorned with similar strategically placed pits, ensuring warmth on breezy evenings. My two fellow diners and myself, delve into the menu with childlike enthusiasm. Our hopes for this experience are without a doubt sky-high thanks to rave reviews we all heard from friends. Of course, what is a dinner with new friends without a drink? I wouldn’t know. The Lark’s bar is crowded with laughing patrons, so we know we are in for a treat. I decide to take a risk and order the Hummingbird – Junipero Gin, Campari, grapefruit, rosemary, and egg whites. While the others opt for an Old Fashioned, and a Mojito. The service is quick, pleasant, and while informative, the waitress did not linger (essentially the makings of a dream server). Our cocktails arrive, and I have slightly lost my valor. Regardless, the murky vermillion drink filled with my least favorite spirit (I don’t know why I do this to myself) beckons, and I oblige. The verdict? Wow. Refreshing, exciting, and honestly this may become my new go-to order.

TANYA Written by Rah Riley Photographed by Joshua Shelley and Matt Barnes Styled by Marc Andrew Smith Hair & Makeup by Vicky Lee Chan
I can hear Tanya in the den. You might be able to hear her from anywhere on the sprawling Carpinteria estate; the woman knows how to project. Her voice is upbeat, playful, and intertwined with laughter and exclamations. Her life writes something of a fairytale – cue marrying the perfect gentleman complete with a bustling social schedule, Rolodex filled with numbers too hot for print, and a mansion in the foothills. But like any true fairytale, it’s also been marred by some rather serious controversies and hurdles: her stepson, Robin Thicke, hit a long-standing feminist nerve (and provoked a $7.3 million lawsuit from the Gaye family) with his and Pharrell Williams’ best-selling song of 2013, “Blurred Lines.” And then there was that black and white Beetlejuice ensemble at the MTV Music Awards (Tanya definitely bought a striped dress just to mock him). Tanya has faced scrutiny regarding the age difference between her and her husband, Alan Thicke, juggled challenging family dynamics, and endured personal attacks on her own appearance and public personality. I get the sense her eyes are never too far from fierceness, ready to defend her family and the people she loves most dearly. And yet she has been almost unwavering in her grace, fighting her own battles and always seeking the beauty (and humor) in the silver lining – a habit that inspired her current reality sitcom. She has a strong voice that rises above – one that speaks from the heart with the wit and vision of a woman who is running the show.

O
Our crew is currently spread about her living room and kitchen. It’s a space that’s bright and colorful – a collection of Callau furniture, mixed prints, and beautiful things. Happily in charge of décor, Tanya has beautifully brought the geography of her upbringing into the Thickes’ Carpinteria home. Vibrant patterns of South America meet the unapologetic embellishment of France. Born and raised in Hollywood, Florida, Tanya actually spent most of her young summers in Bolivia. Throw in an aesthetically influential year in France and oh-so-chic Versace parties of the ‘90s and you get crystal chandeliers, tropical bird prints, fluffy blue floral and Jacquard pillows popping against canary walls, a spare cat casting a suspicious stare our direction, and ornate gold frames wrapped around mirrors and family portraits. On the wall hangs a black and white photo of a young and stunning Tanya Thicke at the height of her modeling career. Soon after the snapshot was taken she would become a wife, stepmother, and homemaker, and eventually a celebrity, socialite, philanthropist, and – most recently – a producer. Easing up on good manners to sink into the lush blue sofa, we’re paging through photographer Matt Barnes’ book. It’s packed with shocking, unexpected, and beautifully whimsical compositions, eyes that can definitely see your soul, incredible tattoo art that has expanded onto his own in-the-works sleeves, and a kind of rare, bare-all glimpse into the lives of strangers as well as a recognizable lineup of personalities. I spy Snoop Dogg, Lights, Betsey Johnson, Chantelle BrownYoung, Corey Stoll… it’s no quick list. Beyond straightforward portraiture, his visions offer a visual commentary on culture and his immediately bookmarked blog offers actual commentary into the smart and snarky mind of a master. A friend of Tanya’s, he has flown in from Toronto for a little at-home photo shoot and is now hovering around the breakfast nook mulling over outfit options for this afternoon. He’s the man responsible for the promo photos of the family’s show, so he’s been here since the beginning – before the beginning, really – of Unusually Thicke. Blending elements of a sitcom with reality TV, each episode of Unusually Thicke is based on something that has really happened, with the dialogue left unscripted. “It’s real with a nudge and a wink,” Alan laughs in a recent talk about their new show with TVGN (now Pop). “It’s part-reality, part-sitcom. I never was so presumptuous to think that we’re interesting enough to
be followed around with cameras with no plan and have it at all be entertaining. My insecurity about that was, ‘Let’s have a story.’ We tell our stories, but we’ll do it in an embellished kind of way. We’re not scripted, but we are plotted.” Unusually Thicke celebrates the everyday humor and drama of one of Hollywood’s most famous TV dads. After seven seasons as Dr. Jason Seaver on Growing Pains, it only makes sense to show off the real family of Alan Thicke. Cue reality sitcom complete with, as Alan put it, “…the hot young Latina, the teenage boy, and the calm, cool aging Canadian.” It’s the real life Modern Family, and it was Tanya who made it possible. While turning down a number of invitations to do reality shows, she was looking toward an opportunity to create something better – something funny, positive, and uplifting that was more comedy than reality. She was onto something. After 14 episodes of surprise star-studded cameos (such as Bob Saget, David Hasselhoff, Wayne Gretzky, John Stamos, and Bill Maher, to name a few), Alan’s direct-to-camera winks, Carter’s laugh-out-loud dry humor, and Tanya’s quick-witted flair, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television nominated Season 1 for 2015 Best Reality Series. The show comes from a place of not taking yourself so seriously and making things work as an imperfect family. With a myriad of hilarious encounters, tough topics (bullying, online cruelty, and gay persecution are in the schedule), and guests from their celebrity circle (did someone say Lance Bass?), Unusually Thicke Season 2 is set to be better than ever. Airing back-to-back on Pop this summer, we can hardly wait for the Season 2 premiere in September. And without further ado, popping in robe-clad with a full head of curlers: Mrs. Tanya Thicke, ladies and gentlemen. As if we’d all just dropped in to say hello, Tanya is welcoming and at ease. Her energy is magnetic without drifting from authentic, and with a laugh that is overflowing and unrestrained, so is her hospitality. Gliding around the sunny kitchen making tri-tip sandwiches, she assures us she’s a really good cook – now. Without recipes, and despite being barely able to make toast when she met Alan and her thentwo-year-old future stepson Carter, she mastered her skills with sheer will and creativity alone – and a little help from nan of course. Our team can attest to handsome homemade hoagies. And in classic Santa Barbara style, lunch (late breakfast, if we’re being honest) is served with Clicquot. SBLIFEANDSTYLE.COM | 53
With sunshine reflecting off an assortment of half-full Champagne flutes, it’s hair and makeup time. Vicky has been doing Tanya’s hair and makeup for Seasons 1 and 2, and while she is certainly good at her job, Tanya is one of those women who makes it easy. At fabulous 40, Tanya is radiating. Her secrets? Don’t worry, we got you. One, drink lots of water; two, get lots and lots and lots of sleep; and three, invest in good skin care. She never wears makeup to bed, has a facial every four months, and uses the critically-adored La Mer. And while until recently she had never worked out (sigh, the lucky ones), this year she’s starting her mornings with 45-minute run-walks in the Gobernador Canyon four to five times a week. And then, of course, there’s Vicky and her magic chair. But Tanya also gives ample credit to embracing her body and loving herself. It’s a message that too often gets lost under facial contouring tips and radical cardio regiments. Always choosing to be grateful and happy, she’s embracing 40 to be the best 40-year-old she can. This attitude may just be the secret to all these good vibes.
‘
1 of the show, it’s an emotional ongoing episode in their real lives. Tanya joined the Thicke family before Carter was even a toddler, and he is the reason Tanya wants to be a mom. “I have a wonderful husband, a great family, and an amazing stepson,” Tanya oozed in an entertaining interview on the (now kaput) Live from the Couch morning show last April. “Alan is an amazing devoted father. He’s raised three wonderful boys. And I just feel like this time around it isn’t so much about him. He’s had three pops at it, and it’s my turn to have a pop at it… I want to have a baby with the man I love.” And this is where the reality really comes into reality sitcom. After a lifetime as the model patriarch both onscreen and off, Alan has hesitations. “She so deserves it and is so great at it. The real issue is if I’m capable at this stage of my life of being the father I’ve already been.”
Yet even confronting one of the most challenging and weighty topics of their 15Today’s photo shoot is for an year relationship – that’s the episode in upcoming Season 2. Three tables away, in the midst of modern Hollywood equivalent Spoiler alert: you’ll be hanging partying like it was 1999 (we can of like 40 years, right? – Alan out with one of Tanya’s bridesmaids, K-mama Kris only assume), the two just click.” and Tanya manage to bring lightheartedness, playful banter, and Jenner, when this one airs! that sought-after silver lining into Tanya is giddy excited about it. She is a producer this season. A new frontier and milestone the conversation. Adamant about taking care of diaper in her career, she now knows what she does and doesn’t want, changes and a crying baby in the middle of the night, Tanya and the new credit gives her more creative control and a lot more doesn’t want those things to be what Alan is worried about. say in the production. She also has the show’s team of all-female Alan laughs, “Yeah, I’ve gotta worry about my own diapers.” execs on speed dial, should any creative battle need backup. The next generation deserves more parents like the Thickes. The cat is back. Apparently Alan isn’t much of a cat person; according to Tanya it’s taken a certain amount of dedicated lap It all started in 1999. The Sopranos, Family Guy, the revolutionary dances to bring more cats into the house. midst the grainy golden hills and sprawling oak trees of Santa Ynez lies a rustic, homey Italian bar and restaurant known as S.Y. Kitchen. With a scent of rosemary wafting through the air, mason jars line the walls while fluffy coral-colored cushions lay neatly on finished wooden benches in the dining area. The openair dining room and wide-spanning windows let in warm rays of sunlight. I arrive slightly before opening time, and the staff is calmly tending to their preparatory tasks to make sure the restaurant is ready for the afternoon. I walk through and I can feel the warm breeze tickle my shoulders, reminding me of the fast-approaching summer heat. When I think of summer, I imagine refreshing iced drinks while sitting under an umbrella chatting the day away with friends. S.Y. Kitchen perfectly emulates my fond memories with their newest summer refreshments, and head bartender Alberto Battaglini has put a spin on the fruity themes of summer to incorporate them into delectable, botanical-based cocktails.

Ingredients like pineapple, jalapeùo, chamomile, and pomegranate are all infused with icy liquors and extracts to create perfectly balanced and deliciously thirstquenching summer drinks. S.Y. Kitchen is surrounded by clusters of lemon and lime trees and strawberry plants – I love knowing that every juice the bar uses is hand-pressed on-site and corked in highnecked glass bottles. The art of making drinks is not just throwing together as many juices, liquors and syrups as possible to create a sophisticated concoction, but rather to learn which additions compliment which ingredients, and using infusions to shock your taste buds. I am a huge fan of trying new flavor combinations and mixing and matching different alcohols with tingling tart, sweet sugar, and other additions to incorporate the beauty of the palate, so when I heard Alberto had envisioned these new mixed drinks, I knew I had to come see for myself.

The first summer sensation I try is the pomegranate and basil-infused Rosso de Sera. Fast moving and lively, Alberto holds perfect conversation while grabbing fresh pomegranate seeds and bright green lime juice from the below-bar fridges. He tries a handful of the seeds and excitedly explains in his thick Italian accent how pomegranate is not in season, but local vendors have been selling wonderful ones lately so he continues to use them. After muddling the seeds into a bright red mash, he tears off some basil leaves, gives them a slap and rips them in half to release the oils. In goes a dash of flower-infused gin, elderflower alcohol, and simple syrup (all made in-house) to complete the mix, and then comes the fun part. Alberto fills the rest of the glass with ice cubes and shakes the canister with an extraordinary gusto. Once satisfied with the result, he strains the gorgeously pink liquid into a frozen tumbler, garnishes it with basil and pomegranate seeds, and sprinkles powdered sugar for an aweinspiring presentation. The first light, fruity sip I take has me coming back for more immediately as the balance between basil and pomegranate is impeccable. This is truly a delicious cocktail that is bound to be a fan favorite, and Alberto is only getting started.

Next, for the Verdana, he whips out the basket of arugula and the bright yellow pineapple puree. Alberto offers me a taste of the slightly sour and frothy puree, and mentions that he will use another syrup to combat the slight tartness. In the glass, he pours the puree, a spicy Ancho Chile liquor, pepper syrup, and Mescal, a tropical agave syrup. He then squishes in as much arugula and ice as can fit, rapidly shakes, and strains the bright green mixture into a dainty chalice and cracks pepper over the top. I highly suggest trying this drink after an uninteresting day at work because the fruity pineapple accentuates the slight hint of fire from the arugula and hot pepper and it will definitely wake you up! The most pleasantly surprising harmony of sweet and hot is the blackberry jalapeño Embargo he makes next. Muddling blackberries and raspberries together, Alberto whips out the lime juice again and splashes it into the glasses. He adds chopped jalapeño and Cachaca and I am excited to see the dark plum red color of the drink poured over ice with chipotle dusted lemon slices. The taste is incredibly wonderful – I am not one for spicy foods or drinks and the delicate hint of jalapeño is perfection. The sourness of the berries combats the spice in a cohesive duo and it is unbelievably delicious. Alberto’s creations emulate all that is summer with its botanicals, fresh fruits, and highly flavorful ingredients, and his ingenuity with taste pairing is extremely enviable. Welcome in the heat of summer and ignite your taste buds with these exquisite cocktails. *

FIT FOR LIFE SIX WEEKS IN THE JENNY SCHATZLE PROGRAM Written & Photographed by Silas Fallstich
I
t’s day three in week five of the Jenny Schatzle program. I’m standing on the cliffs at Gaviota State Park, looking out at a dark blue Pacific, rimmed in a light blue sky with a diffused spread of white clouds. I’ve just made the biggest decision of my professional life and my only concern is that the Gaviota Pier is fenced off from foot traffic. You may be asking yourself what does Gaviota and monumental life decisions have to do with a 6-week fitness program in Santa Barbara. Through the re-telling of my first six weeks in the Jenny Schatzle Program you will get answers to those quandaries. Not to mention you will get some personal insight into what this program is all about, at least from where I’m standing. I went into week one of the program with high energy and high expectations. I had met Jenny and attended one class a few months earlier, I knew the

classes were challenging, dynamic and high paced. My goals going into the course were as follows: focus on maintaining a more consistent weight, improve core strength, build up muscle mass, tone, improve muscular endurance, and improve general endurance. During the first week we had weigh-ins. My stats were: 165.8 pounds, 10.6% body fat, 39-inch chest, 38-inch waist, 26-inch thighs, 13-inch arms. To go along with our weigh-in we also had a week one mile time trial, I ran a 7 minute 10 second mile. I was surprised by some numbers and scared by others. Having read various articles on men’s health I was happy with my total weight and body fat percentage, but scared by the disproportional size of my waist. I’ve always had personal and weight issues with my stomach area and seeing this number put a negative impression in my mind of where my health was. I walked out of my weigh-in feeling motivated to push my personal limits and improve my physical health.

Day one of the program found me covered in sweat and booming with endorphins. Before I walked into class on day two a strong feeling of soreness became apparent, class would be about more than sweat rings and jovial post workout highs. My gluteus and hamstrings were screaming. As if queued by my gluteus before our workout, Jenny told a story about a local woman who was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. The woman didn’t accept it, she removed sugar from her diet and became vegan. The woman beat cancer. The story was exactly what I needed to hear and made me adjust my feelings about pain, allowing me to reach a different level in my workout. Days like this began to reveal Jenny’s attitude and spirit. She has high energy and an energetic spirit but she’s very real in the things she says. She reinforces a positive self-image and encourages the class to only focus on things they can change. She has a personal mission against negative self-talk. She doesn’t accept statements like “my thighs are too big” or “I don’t like my butt,” and really works hard to get these attitudes out of people’s heads.
For me negative self-talk had just received a stark and real interruption. I have some mental challenges, or hiccups as I like to call them. The most apparent is a phrase I tell myself before I go into photo shoots. I tell myself, looking in the mirror, “You’re fat, boring and uninteresting; the only way anyone will ever like you is if you produce amazing photographic work.” Many times I don’t stop at saying the phrase once I will say it over and over. Cementing it into my mind. I don’t know when or how it started, maybe 2 years ago. The phrase isn’t something I fully believe, it’s more of a tool or motivator for me to produce my absolute best photography. I’m a self-taught photographer and being critical of my own work is one of the ways that I continually strive to improve, but as you may be able to infer I sometimes take my self-critique to far. I have never told a single person about the use of this phrase. The reason that I tell you now is because this phrase no longer belongs to me. Taking this course aided me in overcoming a negative routine that upon reflection speaks to the core of where my self-image was.
“
At the beginning of week two in the program there’s a nutrition orientation [Jenny] has high energy The struggle against negative selfwhere Colleen, the program nutritionist, and an energetic spirit talk was something I wasn’t directly and Jenny get all the new class participants but she’s very real in the processing but throughout the program it revealed itself over and over. I couldn’t tell you exactly what Jenny related this to the class by talking about being prompted the negative self-talk that was discouraging me the best version of yourself that you can be. The application process continued into week four. I was given six test images to edit and interviewed in Grover Beach early in the week. I went into the interview soaring with confidence. The meeting couldn’t have gone better, the office manager said that they not only liked my work better than that of any other applicant, they also liked my test edits more than anyone else’s. Upon leaving they said they would get in touch.

I don’t know the outcome of the woman’s bar exam, but I do know that she went into the test with 30 palmtingling high fives and encouraging statements galore.

Week five was defined primarily by my decision making at Gaviota. With the job offer I realized that I would have to drop my life in Santa Barbara, move to Grover Beach and begin a career as a 9 to 5 office worker. For those of you that don’t know me, the later is a near impossible feat. As the days narrowed down to my first day at the job my mentality had a large shift. When I first applied and interviewed for the job my perspective was very straight forward; this is an opportunity I must have. I began really processing whether this was the right opportunity for me. I departed Santa Barbara early one morning, bound for my first of a two-week trial in Grover Beach. I made it as far as Gaviota, sitting there I realized how much I would be sacrificing; coaching soccer, working for my magazine, all in all I would be sacrificing living in Santa Barbara. Rapidly the time began clicking away. Twenty minutes became forty, forty became an hour. The cliffs at Gaviota and the subtle clouds had me cemented in place. It wasn’t a long drawn out choice it was quick and concrete, I was turning down what seemed like the professional opportunity of a lifetime. I almost instantly stood up, got my camera out of my car and started shooting the cliffs, spotting the pier I walked towards it to find it closed. You would truly need to know my personal life and my photography career to understand the implications of turning down a job offer such as this. While that’s a much longer and mundane story I will tell you why I retraced this memory so vividly for you. Taking the job in Grover Beach was the
easy choice. Everyone, including myself, expected me to take the job. But what took more courage and confidence was to realize that it was the wrong opportunity for me. I wouldn’t have been capable of making this decision if I wasn’t in the Jenny Schatzle Program. I haven’t looked back or second guessed my choice once. Being in this program has given me a platform to overcome my lack of self-worth, which enables me to be more productive each day. All in all I didn’t explain very many details about the actual workouts, because from where I’m standing this program is about so much more than the workouts. My end of six weeks numbers were as follows: Weight 162.2, I lost 3 pounds, body fat 9.6%, I lost 1% body fat, I increased 1 pound of muscle weight, my chest went from 39 inches to 40, my waist went from 38 inches to 35, my biceps went from 13 inches to 13.5, and I cut 18 seconds off of my mile time. I relate these numbers to you for a very specific reason. I’m proud of what I was able to achieve, I worked extremely hard through this program, but all of those numbers are a bi-product of what’s really important. I’m eating healthier, I’m working out a minimum of 5 days a week, my energy and outward approach to each day are full of positivity, I’m making time for my personal life, and more important than anything else, I’m not allowing negative self-worth or negative self-talk to dictate the outcome of my life. Going in to session 2 of the Jenny Schatzle program I have only one goal and that’s to get fit for life. *

THE SCARLET
romance Written & Photographhed by Silas Fallstich
I
fall in love instantly. I once fell in and out of love with a girl in 15 seconds, that was how long it took her to order her coffee and walk out of sight. I’m totally and completely a love at first sight guy. I fell in love with my camera and even named it before I had it out of the box. I’ve fallen in love with sports teams, books, sandwiches, coffee shops, mountains, authors, camp spots, cities, fruits, and people all over the western United States. One of the most apparent places I fell hard for is San Francisco. Recently I was presented with the opportunity to do a travel piece on a hotel in The Bay and used it as an opportunity to find out if I could fall in love with a building and all its components. I’m sitting on a chair fit for an emperor, out the open window of my hotel room a chapel bell tolls six times. I’m recollecting my first 24 hours at The Scarlet Huntington. My arrival was ceremonious. So ceremonious the entire block surrounding the hotel was closed off and I wasn’t allowed into the building because the street was on lockdown. All the rigmarole is for Joe Biden, who happens to be staying next door. His presence has everyone in an uproar, including the 100 some motorcycle cops whose sirens whistle intermittently.

I’m whisked in the back door through the employee entrance to The Big 4 Restaurant. I feel as if I’ve been transplanted to another dimension. The dimly lit restaurant is etched with hard wood, deep green chairs are accented by forest green walls, an air of history permeates the place and the external world seems to be all but gone. I’m delivered to the bar and given a Golden Spike, the premier house speciality cocktail which is crafted with a blend of 16 malt whiskeys. One sip in and I’m a goner, the zing of sweet honey with a punch of aged whiskey, I’m instantly impressed and before my glass can return to my mouth, crispy artichokes arrive. Their crunchy exterior yields to a soft and moist interior. I’ve never experienced fried artichokes and each bite has me more enthralled with the flavors and texture. My arrival seems to be taking a turn for the better. Around the corner from me a woman is readying the piano by testing the ping and pang of individual keys. Across from me two women talk in unintelligible whispers, every fourth or fifth word is audible, one of them is wearing large sunglasses that cover a third of her face. The entire scene seems like something out of a script. I could spend the entire afternoon sipping cocktails and tasting treats from Chef Kevin Scott’s menus but I have a hotel to fall in love with and I’ve only been as far as the bar.

The staff has a friendly persona with a hyper sense of professionalism. I’m particularly taken with the courteous door man who gives each guest the most polite “hello” with each pass. His delivery is perfect; I secretly wonder if he sits at home honing the precisely right volume at which to project his voice. Once in my room I instantly gravitate to the windows. Five windows in all, each depicting a somewhat different view of the city. The bedroom window boasts a catty-corner view of Grace Cathedral and looks directly over Huntington Park. Far below a man tosses a ball for his dog, an excited yelp echoes up to me. The adjourning rooms boast views of the harbor and neighboring hotels. I open these windows hopeful to hear the roar of a passing barge. In turn each window in the suite is opened, the volume of the city permeates up to me. I don’t know if I’ve been in a hotel room with decor as elaborate as what I’m seeing. The hues are deep and rich, accented by elaborate modern designs. Upon further inquiry the staff informs me that the bold decor is influenced by the Straits Chinese culture and emergence in modern design. Many times in hotel rooms I feel confined but no such feelings exist here. The world is outside these walls but for the rest of the afternoon I lounge in my room letting the world come to me through subtle car horns, the occasional toll of the cable car, and cacophony of other noises that seem to hum in unison. I ransack the blocks and hills around this corner to find the just right perspective of the exterior of The Scarlet Huntington. I have come to the conclusion that there isn’t but one view that will win you over. Seeing the building from the steps of Grace Cathedral will allow you to fully appreciate the scale of the building, the brick exterior, and the vines that permeate the first few floors. Seeing it from the corner of Pine Street and Mason Street I’m taken back in time with a strong view of the vintage Huntington Hotel sign that’s placated to the top of the building. From the corner of Sutter Street and Taylor Street you can really feel the uphill climb it takes to get up Nob Hill, and appreciate where the hotel is situated. Throughout the blocks and streets of the city this pleasant building is depicted differently, I challenge you to find the perspective that most suits you. Within the walls of this modern yet increasingly vintage destination, palace like wonder exists. In early 2014 the location saw 15 million dollars in renovation. It’s viewed as not only a luxury hot spot but also one of the premier locations that has reignited the culture of Nob Hill. The 13 stories boasts an infinity pool, luxury spa, sauna, and decor that royalty would be envious of. Each room has panoramic views of the city; I like to think that each room is home to its very own canvas of the city. 82 | MAY 2015

I’ve stayed at hotels where I have been treated like a prince and every whim was attended to. I’ve had the misfortune of staying at hotels where I was completely ignored and treated as unwelcome as a vagabond. At The Scarlet Huntington I feel neither an overjustified sense of hospitality or neglect. I feel like a peer to the other guests and I wouldn’t want it any other way. The staff is courteous and helpful but no overcomplicated gestures or needless pleasantries are provided. I feel as if I’m being given the most authentic experience plausible and it is just what I need. At the moment when I most need the staff they are there for me. In the middle of my final night in San Francisco a bought of insomnia strikes me hard. At the front desk the unsurprised attendant politely recommends a drive up to Twin Peaks. The view of the city lights from there is nothing short of amazing is all he says. Think about the places you really enjoy going, your favorite places in Santa Barbara or a place abroad that you absolutely love, if there’s a particular spot that comes to mind, I encourage you to go to that spot at a time or a season when you traditionally wouldn’t. I’m currently at the top of Twin Peaks in San Francisco, it’s 2:45 A.M., there is loud rap music permeating from a nearby car, adolescents with cigarettes and sidewards hats are moving all around me, there is a stream of sounds and movements that I hadn’t expected.Yet a broad expanse of twinkling city lights abound before me, a semi-crescent moon is rising above the city. As I ease my way down Market Street towards Nob Hill and my luxury corner suite I realize that once again I’ve fallen in love. *

Petite Raspberry Meyer Lemon Tarts with Almond Pastry Crust Yield: 12 tarts
Ingredients: Almond Pastry Crust: 1/2 cup almond meal 1 ½ cups whole wheat pastry flour (make sure it’s pastry, this will provide a fluffy, less grain-like, texture) 1 tsp sea salt 2/3 cup coconut oil 2 tbsp clarified butter (ghee) 5-6 tbsp water (ice cold)
Directions:
Meyer Lemon Filling: 4 large eggs 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup fresh squeezed Meyer lemon juice 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 2 tbsp of whole wheat pastry flour 1 tbsp lemon zest 1 tsp vanilla extract fresh raspberries powdered sugar 1 whole egg (optional for top of crust)
Start by making your pastry dough: combine flour, almond meal and salt in a large bowl. With a pastry blender or two knives, cut in coconut oil and butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Using a fork, mix in just enough water to form a cohesive mass (this can also be done in a food processor). Using your hands, shape the dough into a ball, then flatten slightly into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until dough is chilled enough to roll (at least 30 minutes). Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 88 | MAY 2015

While the dough is in the refrigerator, make the Meyer lemon filling. Combine eggs, honey, lemon juice, lemon zest, and vanilla. Mix in Greek yogurt and whole-wheat pastry flour. Set aside. Flour a work surface. Remove dough from refrigerator and separate into 2 pieces. Roll the larger piece to a 1/8 thickness, sprinkling it lightly with flour as needed so it doesn’t stick. Spray 12 individual mini tart pans with baking spray. Using the top of a mini tart pan as a cookie cutter, cut out each individual tart crust in order to fill each pan with the perfect amount of crust. Place crusts in each tart pan and line pans on a baking sheet. Fill each crust with Meyer lemon filling (a little less than full). Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the center of each tart is fully baked. While tarts are in the oven, use a fluted pastry wheel to cut very thin strips from the remainder of the dough to create the lattice design on top of the tart. Remove tarts from the oven, allow to cool for 1 minute. Remove each tart from the tart pan. Place fresh raspberries on top of each tart followed by the lattice pastry crust design. Press the ends of the pastry strips into the tarts in order to obtain a finished look. Optional: whisk 1 whole egg and brush on top of the lattice crust (this will help brown the lattice crust). Place the tarts back in the oven directly on the baking sheet and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, until the tops of the tart crusts are fully baked. Remove from oven, let cool, and enjoy! MAKEUP by Rose For this radiant spring look makeup artist Rose Serrano began by applying Glo Minerals Matte Eyeshadow. On Toni’s lids she used Banana and on her crease she added some darker tones with Twig. To dress up her eyes, Rose layered Glo Minerals Volumizing Mascara on the top and bottom lashes. She then applied Ardell Professional Lashes, making Toni’s blue eyes pop even more. Rose then contoured and brightened Toni’s cheeks with Anastasia Contour Palette and then swiped a delicate amount of Glo Minerals Rosebud Blush to emphasize her soft tones. Rose completed this look by adding some color with Glo Minerals Borabora Lipstick.
HAIR by Ashton
To achieve this smooth and sleek look, hairstylist Ashton Arroyo first straightened Toni’s hair, taking inch sections at a time to make sure her hair was as smooth as possible. For perfectly sealed and even ends and some added shine Ashton applied Davines Oi Oil. She controlled any frizz and fly always with Davines Invisible Serum by emulsifying a pea size between her palms and lightly stoking the top of the hair in a downward motion. Ashton finished the look with Davines Medium Hold Hairspray, adding extra body while showing off her long, silky hair.
