CLUB MAGIC HOUR BRINGS SPECIALTY RITUALS OF CONNECTION TO TEA TIME by ALEXANDRA LEE Photographs by SILAS FALLSTICH

I

t’s magic hour. Fog dissipates like steam gently blowing off tea, giving way to an open road where golden mountains kiss the blue sky for miles on the snaking Ojai freeway. To the carefree wanderer, this blissful ride should continue for hours, but my journey has a final destination for mind, body, and spirit.

Red lanterns adorn the ceiling and fragrant aromas perfume each breath in. I bask in a sunlit corner of a magical tea salon positioned unassumingly in the middle of Ojai Ave. There is a steaming blue potion in my hand, though some would less generously call it tea. Sitting across from me is Zhena Muzyka, whose piercing laughter livens the air as she describes her experience as founder and master tea blender at Club Magic Hour. Among notes of hibiscus and butterfly pea flower in my Honeysuckle Moon beverage, I find notes of alignment, clarity, consciousness, and intention blended into the loose leaf.

Coming from a line of medicine women and mystics in the Ukraine, Zhena’s core values include accessibility to health and wellness and a strong connection to energy healing and astrology—what some would call magic. After her former tea startup, Zhena’s Gypsy Teas, was bought out by investors—“It's weird when you can't buy back your own name,” Zhena remarks—the experienced creator looked to the sky for inspiration in her new venture, and found the answer within the dusky pink of sunset. The moment between light and dark is Zhena’s magic hour, where anything is possible. The company name, for many reasons, was obvious…“Magic Hour will be the new happy hour,” she says with a smile. The magic that Zhena harnesses, beyond the mystical aromas and pigments of her specialized teas, is the unparalleled intimacy of connectivity. Health and wellness

have unfortunately become commandeered, curated, and marketed into an entity that’s inaccessible, where certain products, workout classes, memberships, and subscriptions are necessary simply to be “well.” Oftentimes, we forget that wellness is an internal project of happiness and peace, inspired by moments of connection with those we love most. As Zhena describes it, “The whole mission behind Magic Hour is to create ceremonies of connection.” These ceremonies can take only a few minutes of your day, such as having tea in the morning with a spouse or child before work or school, but creating small rituals that focus on meaningful connection rather than mundane conversation can make all the difference. Wellness shouldn’t be daunting, expensive, or ultimately time consuming, it should just be. For Zhena, tea is the vehicle to open up intimate moments of trust and connectedness, and while the product itself isn’t free, “having a cup of tea with a friend is, right?” Magic Hour is special not only in its fine teas, but in Zhena’s curation of her own version of tea ceremony, a mindfulness practice known to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. The ceremony can be completed individually, in small groups, or even amongst a circle of strangers, as a down to earth and inclusive process. Centered around going into the energy of the heart, breathwork, and mindfulness, tea encourages common presence. “And then we create appreciation for ourselves and others, and almost like a meta-type, heart-centered meditation, we share our hearts and souls with each other.” It sounds simple, but Zhena admits she’s had FBI agents crying in the circle of her tea salon. Her twice-a-week online Zoom sessions max out at 500 people, and are consistently full. Zhena taps into the


realization that making eye contact and talking about things that matter is what our souls are craving in this fast-paced world. Her ceremonial teas are made with love, a claim endorsed by many. What is so special about tea itself? An ancient beverage, it’s surprising that most people don’t drink it five times a day based on its keys to longevity, anti-aging, cancer fighting, and well-balanced metabolism. Through an amino acid called L-theanine, which relaxes the brain and reduces inhibitions towards openness, the beverage (which Zhena considers more of a potion) holds more superpowers than is given credit for. “It's almost like having a glass of wine, but without the alcohol. You feel giddy and joyful, and sharing.” Her teas are anything but standard, grown at a fair trade tea garden in Sri Lanka where the workers represent family and home more than anything else—naturally, they hosted her wedding at a temple in the garden. Magic Hour practices direct trade, ensuring access to the highest quality ingredients that start beyond the tea leaf at the bud itself. She now brings customers “the most pristine, beautiful teas that I used to only be able to drink in small quantities in the tea field.”

As the last of my blue potion disappears and the sun shifts below my warmly lit corner, I ponder the exquisite eye to detail apparent in every aspect of Magic Hour. On the tea label, two hands envelop a magic hourglass as planets move along circular paths, the phrase “time for infinity” adorning the bottom. Zhena packs me a goodie bag of tea samples, recounting her childlike affinity for the sorcery of teacraft. “My dad was joking the other day…he was like ‘You were always making potions even when you were like two years old.’” She smiles to herself, handing me a tea strainer to guide me on my newfound journey in tea therapy. “Yeah, I was always up to something in the kitchen, making potions. It's my destiny.” *

Zhena assumes the role of importer, blender, and packer all in one, personally overseeing every step of the operation—and you can taste it. Upon many travels to Asia, Zhena noticed the youthful and healthy appearances of those who drank tea, discovering 5,000 year old blends that were used by monks for meditation, women for anti-aging, and others for brain energy and calm. “I was like, okay, what is this voodoo magic?” she laughs vibrantly. Biodynamic agriculture is a staple in Magic Hour’s production, which operates according to the cosmos and harvests tea during particular moon and planetary cycles to be more delicious and nourishing: “It’s like organic on steroids.” To Zhena, it’s clear that humans are astronomically interconnected with the plants we consume, and that the water in our bodies is influenced by the moon, just as the tides of the ocean. “One piece of soil is going to have the same elements as the stars.” I pause to sip my blue potion, nodding in wonder. Wandering the salon I find a display for each aspect of life, from energy and harmony to the chakras of the heart and activation of the third eye. The process of creating these teas is layered, Zhena first finds a leaf that inspires her, then incorporates her herbal medicine background to combine vibrant flavor with targeted intentions. Combing the shelves, I see much more than only Magic Hour creations. Zhena describes her dedication to uplifting woman-owned businesses and being heavily involved in the Ojai and Santa Barbara communities, scanning for enterprises to support. “I feel that women bring their sensibility to business in a way that's very healing,” she says.

W

hile I would count nearly every Santa Barbara dining experience as transportative, the magic spun at Rosewood Miramar Beach’s upscale dining concept, Caruso’s, has never been short of world class. The service, cuisine, and setting are unmatched not only in California, but internationally, as Caruso’s menu and ambiance continues to vault barriers between coastal cool and fine fare. The white tablecloth, tailored-suit environs of the restaurant— located on a nearly subterranean level of the hotel, directly on the beach (one of the only eateries for miles afforded such a waterfront privilege)—may initially foster ideas of stuffy airs and pompous eats, yet this could not be further from the truth. The stylish indoor-outdoor configuration takes after the land and sea surroundings, borrowing from boats with a yacht-like interior boasting sleek wood-paneled walls and chrome accents. Sprinklings of deep blue, in the lush leather chairs lining the expansive array of the bar and the booths along the walls, evoke a sense of five-star high seas travel, attained by simply descending a set of stairs into another realm. Caruso’s Italian menu has always borrowed from Californian ingredients and specialties while remaining true to Chef Massimo Falsini’s roots. When the endeavor opened, it began as an a la carte experience that has since evolved into a prix fixe dining spectacular containing four courses. In true beachside fashion, the next expansion of Falsini’s palate comes as a foray into the vegan space, with an entirely plantbased tasting menu. The option is four courses, including dessert, and designed to be ordered alongside the existing and

ever-changing prix fixe, allowing diners of all dietary preferences to order to their heart’s whim in harmony. As an eater with completely vegan ambitions, but cheese and chicken inclined tendencies, this extension of Caruso’s cuisine is an absolute dream. If I must craft and seek out entirely vegan dishes on my own, I fall short. Yet, if someone (someone being a highly-decorated master chef) concocts an imaginative and scrumptious, nutritionally balanced, four-course, first-class, plantbased meal and sets it in front of me to devour…. Well, then, I’m the most devout vegan you’ll ever meet. The evening begins with an amuse bouche that has me questioning whether I’ve mistakenly stumbled into an outrageously glamorous juice bar (this is Montecito, after all). Rest assured, I have arrived, slurping down a wheatgrass shot that surprisingly cleanses and awakens the palate, a pleasant prelude to the green goodness to come. My first course follows, heralding a textured and rich dish that the waitstaff claims is made almost entirely from beans. I take their word for it, but am still trying to wrap my head around how so much flavor and depth could flower from a few simple, ground-grown ingredients.

The pasta course, a vegan cacio e pepe in which corn mezze imitates the traditional Pecorino Romano, may do more for my tastebuds than the lactose-inclusive version ever has. The noodles are obviously freshly rolled, light and buoyant on my tongue, and the generously peppered sauce has an umami flavor that can be described as nothing other than one of a kind. Thick, but balanced; savory, but bright. It is a dish I will crave morning, noon, and night for years to come, all the more from knowing that it is free of any animal byproducts. The final dinner course, a cauliflower and kale fusion to rival any filet mignon, nourishes me without the sluggish side effect of a heavy meat course, often putting me to bed before dessert can arrive. Instead, I feel revived and ready for what will be set in front of me last. Falsini’s finale is a luscious no-cheesecake accented with quince, combining to produce a delectable, wintry delight. The feat conquered by the team at Caruso’s is nothing short of masterful. meet a friend at Coast & Olive for a mid-week catch up. Beneath the outdoor canopy, we gaze over the eclectic menu while noshing on savory popcorn—a welcome snack for guests to enjoy. Envisioned by French trained culinary mastermind Executive Chef Vicente Torres, the menu features Italian, French, and Mediterranean inspired dishes crafted with local ingredients.

Montecito Inn’s newest dining establishment (operated by the Copus family who owns the hotel) emphasizes farmer’s market fresh and seasonal ingredients. Sitting

on Coast Village Road, the restaurant’s decor is polished yet casual, and the patio equipped with heaters and string lights makes for a charming setting with the Santa Ynez Mountains as an enchanting backdrop. With a cheerful demeanor, our server suggests a few dishes and cocktails. I opt for the Basil Fortunada, a basil and cucumber concoction infused with vodka, lemon, agave, and a dash of olive oil. My friend has The Mamba, a tribute to the late basketball player Kobe Bryant. The purple and yellow libation is a harmonious balance of sweet from the passion fruit foam, and sour from the gin and lemon.

My taste buds daydream of Mediterranean beach days as they bathe in the bright and peppery notes of my cocktail. A few sips later, and deep in conversation, I spot our server walking over with our appetizers. I fork into a Brussels sprout—charred and crispy on the outside, meaty on the inside. The squash blossom purée drizzled atop adds a hint of sweetness, and the hazelnuts a perfect crunch. My eyes feast on the exquisite color and texture of the Tuna Tartare. Upon first bite, the avocado mousse and lime crème fraÎche deliver a flawless balance of earthy tart flavors while enhancing the rich, buttery notes of the

Each bite of this whimsical dish reveals a variation of flavor from the bacon braised greens, roasted fingerling potatoes and confit beet accompaniments. With an inspired palate, I take a bite of my friend’s dish, a pacific striped sea bass perched upon a soft pillow of white bean ragout with tomato coconut consommé, which transports me to the Italian countryside—it’s one of those earthy dishes that hugs you from the inside. We can all agree, there’s always room for dessert, especially when a cookie skillet is involved. We end the night on a sweet note with vanilla crème fraîche panna cotta and a cookie skillet. With the perfect amount of chew on the inside, and flecked with decadent chocolate chips, the cookie sits in a micro skillet with vanilla ice cream atop—a combination to satisfy all sweet tooth cravings. Elegant in presentation, the panna cotta’s silky texture is aromatized with peach gelée and peach raspberry compote, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

uantum physics long ago determined that physical matter doesn't really exist and that everything is just energy in different states of vibration. This energy vibrates at an infinite number of subtle frequencies, causing it to appear like the other creations we see in our world. As woo-woo as this may sound, it is a law of physics. There has been a great deal of research in recent years pointing toward that life is an energy flow rather than a collection of solid things. These results lead to the discussion that if everything is attracted to an equal vibration, what frequency am I projecting into the world with my thoughts, words, and actions? It's a confronting yet equally empowering thought that we control our lives that much. With this level of awareness, we can deliberately alter our frequency and create our desired reality. If we're feeling down about something, we can choose to reframe the situation and raise our spirits. We stand a much better chance of bringing good into our lives with a renewed perspective and a higher, more optimistic energetic vibration.

The best place to start is auditing our lives, keeping in mind that everything in our energetic field will raise or lower our vibration. Let's look at some areas that could use review when curating a life by design:

CHOOSE YOUR WORDS

The words we speak, read, and expose ourselves to are extremely powerful tools that we can utilize to uplift our energy and improve our lives. Even the words of others affect your vibration; spend a few minutes with a chronic complainer, and you'll feel your energy bottom out. Words have great power, so choose them (and your friends) wisely.

FILTER YOUR FRIENDS

Tony Robbins has a saying, "Show me your friends, and I'll show you your future." We are energetic beings, so we absorb the energy of the people around us, positive or negative, which alters our vibration. Looking for a solution and feeding off a problem are two very different energies. Everyone has bad days, yet some people thrive on cyclical drama, which is trauma-based and will suck you down with them. Take a moment to consider the energy you are allowing in your realm and filter accordingly.

GET OFFLINE

We can waste hours, days, weeks, months, and years aimlessly consuming information on our phones that doesn't enhance our quality of life. Make those decisions actively. Next time you pick up the phone or sit down at your laptop, ask yourself: do I create or consume? Being mindful of this will make your life more purpose-driven, otherwise, it threatens to turn us into hamsters in a wheel of information with no direction. Conscious creation and consumption of social media leads the way for your network to do the same and helps de-clutter the world.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

The saying, “you are what you eat,” has stood the test of time for a good reason. The food we consume is the foundation of a healthy body and good quality of life. There is ample research on how the gut is considered the second brain because what you eat affects the brain’s neurotransmitters and chemistry. Next time you think about eating, which I'm sure won't be long, ask yourself where the food came from. Did it come from a farm or factory? Are the animals free range or caged? Are the vegetables sprayed with pesticides or organic? Food energetics is a real thing, and produce loses up to 90% of its nutrients four days post harvesting, so try to eat whole and organic foods that are accessible, in season, and from local farms.

MOVE YOUR BODY, MOVE YOUR VIBRATION

It's well documented that working out releases dopamine and serotonin (the happiness chemicals) in the brain. Now, as well as being good for your physical body to release stagnant energy, movement releases these happiness chemicals, which will shift your vibrational point of attraction to one of more ease, happiness, and openness.

These five areas of life should set you on your way to raising your vibration. Start slow, take a step back, and make small changes to get better every day, because when you become better, your life becomes better, and such is the law of quantum physics. *

We lived in the same building in West Hollywood, which became stressful during COVID, so we moved to Santa Barbara together, pursuing peace, quiet, and nature—something more aligned with what we wanted for ourselves. That was six months ago and we couldn’t be happier. We got engaged here.” If Laina’s love story is not enough of an advertisement to practice mindful lifebuilding, I don’t know what is. Common amongst every client, Laina mentions, is their period of awakening. “It is beyond rewarding to watch people implement this philosophy and reap its benefits: ‘I am the creator of my life, I have created everything up to this point, now I want to create on purpose.’” In manifesting, getting clear is the first step: ask, as Caltagirone calls it. You must identify a deep desire for a certain way of life to uncover what you seek. Secondly, believe; believe that for which you pine is within reach and you are worthy of it. Lastly, we must use selfwork, lessons learned, and most importantly, our words to bring this life to fruition. The SparkNotes on step three? itting on the terrace of Casa Palopó, Lake Atitlan expands in front of me. Clouds crawl up the volcanic peaks just across the water. Hummingbirds feast on orchids swinging from the trellis shading my perch. Airy French toast cubes drown in pecan syrup on intricate ceramics before me. My friend takes a call and I lean back to scroll through Instagram, as one does. Photos of acquaintances in Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast pepper my feed. Unamused, I set the phone down to marvel at the glistening lake before me. I feel a little smug—ahead of the curve. Where I am is more beautiful. More original. Quieter. Undiscovered. Guatemala was not on my travel list, yet after a week here, I’m perplexed as to why it's not at the top of everyone's list.

Eager to explore the Mayan villages nestled in the folds of the mountains, my friends and I descend a stone staircase to Casa Palopó’s dock. Our boat skims the glassy lake, mooring at wellness-oriented San Marcos. Signs for a yoga forest lead us along a jungle path, past crystal shops and retreat centers. Like a mirage, our destination appears through the vines. El Artisano Restaurant is vibrant, quintessentially Guatemalan. We share several charcuterie boards composed of local ingredients, and in spite of the mouthwatering flavors, our server reciting the 20 cheese options—including the order of consumption—leaves an equally lasting impression. The next town, San Juan, is a mecca for textiles and ceramics. Each shop is more colorful than the last. Unable to resist the kaleidoscope of hues, my friend buys a chair hammock for just $20. We leave the shopping behind to hike to a vista where the observation deck is decorated with traditional paintings depicting the native culture. However, the cornfields and coffee plantations, sprawling as far as the eye can see, are the real attraction. In an effort to unwind back at the hotel, I browse decades of Architectural Digest in the “magazine room.” Bright primary shades, reminiscent of Twister, pop along the walls of the 15-room hotel as I stroll with a Viajero Sour in hand towards the restaurant. The mezcal, chamomile, and lemon concoction segues into a dinner of freshly caught trout that rests atop vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes, all sourced from a nearby farm. Though the day calls for an early rise, the adventure ahead is worth it. The hotel shuttle deposits us in the closest town, Santa Catarina Palopó. Colorful, uniform patterns cover the building facades. Casa Palopó leads a project where

guests paint citizens’ homes with biodegradable paint. Besides being eco-friendly, the initiative cultivates an aesthetically pleasing town, while providing economic opportunities for the indigenous community. A win-win. Kids licking popsicles walk down the cobblestone streets. A girl who can’t be older than seven, yet possesses more cunning sales skills than any car salesman, approaches us. I don’t want to buy a bracelet, I’d rather offer her a job. Stepping into the cultural center, the smell of rich coffee permeates the air. A bubbling pot of corn splatters the wood-burning stove, multiple generations of women sit at looms diligently weaving traditional textiles. I take in the simplicity of the scene; in some ways less appears to be more, for the people look content—in inexplicable peace. We return to Casa Palopó for afternoon tea in the glamping tent adjacent to the property’s villa. Tiers of fried plantain balls, mini tamales, and tea sandwiches are plucked away as the sun sets over the lake. I wind down the day with a massage at the spa then a bath in the tub outside my room. Bougainvilleas float on the water, and I relish in a completely private yet expansive view.

A quick morning helicopter flight delivers us to Casa Palopó's sister property, Villa Bokéh. On the outskirts of Antigua, Guatemala’s newest luxury hotel looks like it was built specifically for a celebrity wedding, or for writing a novel. It’s romantic. Elegant. Modern. My camera roll quickly becomes the only design inspiration I’ll ever need. Hotel bathrooms are my obsession, and I’ve never seen anything like this.


would make. Next stop: Dona Gavi, a hole in the wall selling natural beauty products alongside uniquely flavored handmade ice cream. After much pondering, I get a cone of rice pudding ice cream dusted with cinnamon. Just one bite, and it redefines my definition of ice cream excellence. Next, we drive outside the city to Luna Zorro Studio, a textile company founded by Bay Area native Molly Berry, for a private dyeing workshop. While waiting for the pigments of turmeric and eucalyptus to set in to our aprons and scrunchies, we roam the cotton plantation and boutique.

Each stall is a brick cylinder with candles spiraling up the side, tropical plants adorn the space, ornate mirrors flicker in the sunlight, and cool black and white tiles fill the common area. And that’s just the pool bathroom... Every design detail throughout the hotel is not only stunning, but thoughtful and nuanced. It must have taken a lifetime to weave the navy textile covering a wall in my room. It’s ornamented by black and white images captured by the owners. At breakfast, gold poppy-handled spoons escort coconut whipped cream and orange honey atop waffles. Our table overlooks the gardens and lagoon—complete with an arched bridge, fountain, and row boat. A total dream. I spend the afternoon floating in the pool, looking up at palms and blue scalloped umbrellas, emerging only for a dinner of pumpkin risotto and passion fruit tres leches cake. I sleep soundly, perhaps aided by the garden’s fleur de fundita, said to release pollen at nightfall that induces restful sleep. Come morning we venture into Antigua, a continuation of the wonderful decor and food surrounding us at Villa Bokéh. The city is protected by UNESCO, and its history is evident in cracked marigold and red walls lining cobblestone streets. Central Park is filled with vendors, some selling hats stacked 20-tall atop their heads. We explore the impeccable ruins of Patronato Cathedral, the inspiration behind the lofty hotel rooms, musing what an amazing party venue the structure

I buy glassware, having seen the cups in the Villa Bokeh bathroom. Anything to bring an aspect of the hotel's aesthetic home. The next afternoon we depart, yet I am left full—inspired by the beauty, intricacy, and thoughtfulness in Casa Palopó, Villa Bokéh, and the local crafts. The hotels truly embody and set guests up to experience the absolute best of Guatemala, while keeping tradition and authenticity alive. My only regret is not bringing an extra suitcase to transport more Guatemalan treasures home with me. *

OPULENT DECADENCE REIGNS SUPREME IN THE HEART OF CHARMING MARRAKECH

’m immediately enchanted by the North African desert oasis of Marrakech. The magic of the Moroccan city wins me over early on, even as a bleary-eyed traveler stepping off a plane from Los Angeles by way of Paris.

My husband Will and I are grateful that our first landing spot is a haven at the edge of the city’s refined Hivernage neighborhood, Four Seasons Resort Marrakech. Magenta bougainvillea, graceful palms, and lush greenery line the drive to the elegant property that exudes the quiet confidence of pure luxury. Situated on 40 acres of flawlessly manicured Moorish gardens, a beautifully-appointed pavilion room is our sanctuary for our first days in the city. Each morning, we take in the peaceful view from our private terrace before strolling to the resort’s Quattro restaurant for a Moroccan breakfast overlooking the fountain pool. Lamb shakshuka, Moroccan “thousand hole” crepes, an array of local nuts and olives, and freshsqueezed, deliciously sweet orange juice are some of my favorite items.

After wandering the medina souks, experiencing the hustle and bustle of Djemaa El Fna square, touring the expansive Bahia Palace, and taking in the energy of the city for a few days, it’s a treat each time we return to the serene surroundings of the Four Seasons. Laying next to one of the two sun-dappled pools is the antidote to city wanders, and a nightcap of local Meknes wine overlooking rows of red-lit palms—a nod to Marrakech’s nickname, the Red City— at the resort’s sultry Inara lounge is an ideal way to end each day.

Our next escape is a little slice of Moroccan heaven: Kasbah Bab Ourika. Perched on a remote overlook at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, this 28-room countryside paradise feels perfectly far flung while located only 45 minutes outside of Marrakech city limits. The awardwinning, environmentally conscious resort—which boasts one of the most eco-friendly buildings in all of Morocco— is built upon a reverence for the land and the renowned hospitality of the Berbers, the indigenous people of the area. Aside from the gorgeous grounds, the property’s dining program is particularly impressive; the menu changes daily based on what’s fresh in the resort’s sprawling organic gardens and the creative whims of the kitchen. Specializing in Berber, Arabic, and international cuisine, not only do traditional tagines and mezzes fill the menu, but French, English, and Indian-inspired dishes find their way to tables at the charming, al fresco Colonnaded Restaurant. An earth and blush-toned aesthetic brushes the whole property, and locally-made artisan goods are prominently featured in each common and private room. If you happen to fall in love with the rug, pillow, or throw in your suite—which you will—don’t fret; you can purchase most items from the kasbah and take them home with you. There is nothing hurried about this place; each element of the resort is a reflection of the land on which it sits. Sipping refreshing cocktails, unwinding at the spa, and just generally existing here is delightful. We came to revel in the splendor of the Ourika Valley, yet leave with an unmatched sense of peace

Our final stop in Morocco is the world-renowned Royal Mansour in Marrakech. Arriving in its lobby feels like walking inside a glittering jewel box. Its striking combination of carrara marble, intricately designed tilework, and handcarved plaster has the potential to leave one spellbound, which Will and I quickly become. Can it get any grander? When I arrive at our very own opulent, three-story riad—of which there are 53—I find that the answer is yes. Fit for royalty, this hotel was commissioned by the King of Morocco himself, which does not surprise me in the least after having spent even a minute on the magnificent property. The attentionto-detail in its design is astounding; 1,500 workers over the course of four years constructed every inch of it using materials and building methods that pay homage to the very best of the country. The property is a love letter to Morocco. The night we arrive, Will and I enjoy our most memorable date night yet at SESAMO. The hotel’s newest restaurant, this Italian showstopper is helmed by three Michelinstar chef Massimiliano Alajmo, who was the youngest chef ever awarded three coveted stars at the age of 28. Channeling a Venetian palace, everything in the room sparkles, down to the gold flecks catching the light in the menu and the bubbles in our champagne. The inventive menu surprises and charms with dishes that are as easy on the eyes as they are pleasing on the palate. Handmade ravioli filled with fresh burrata and spice-dusted lobster tails are stand-outs. The stunning

A REFLECTIVE WOODED WELLNESS ESCAPE AMONGST NORCAL'S MYSTIC REDWOODS by KIM HASHEMI

elf-reflection, more moments of presence, and deeper gratitude are a few 2022 resolutions I’ve jotted down. Upon voicing my intentions to my agent at Santa Barbara Travel Bureau, she recommended a retreat at Canyon Ranch Woodside, a wellness resort where self-care comes first and distractions are easily escaped. Canyon Ranch properties offer hands-on experiences and workshops to guide guests through personal transformations— spiritually, mentally, and physically. Situated a quick jaunt from San Francisco Airport, the integrative wellness resort in Woodside features 38 guest rooms, a state of the art fitness studio, and a nurturing spa. A realm of abundant redwoods paves the way to my tucked away destination. The gracious front desk host greets me and shows me to The Hearth for a nourishing post-travel meal. A childlike wonder emerges as I enter my glassclad treehouse perched in the redwood canopy. I’m fully immersed in Woodside’s striking scenery, and imbued with serenity as I notice the smoothas-silk Mascioni bed linens and deep soaking tub. An itinerary tailored by a Canyon Ranch wellness guide weeks before my arrival leads me to my first experience: a calming yoga class. It eases my mind and body into a state of rest. Tapped into my breath and with an elevated consciousness, the worries of my to-do list and commitments wash away.


The next experience, a ‘Forgiveness From the Heart’ workshop is a fitting one for the start of the new year. Our guide shares methods for releasing feelings and emotions which no longer serve— promoting wholeness and abundance. After a day of self-reflection and self-care, a warm eucalyptus bath seems like the natural next step before a blissful sleep. Serenity washes over me as I wake up to birds singing and majestic redwoods gracing my view. The meditative walk through nature peaks all my senses and I’m eager to discover what Chef Nunes has prepared for dinner. My expectations are exceeded as I take my first bite of the mushroom and rye salad—an earthy dish crafted with frisee, sherry, and castelvetrano olives— simple ingredients in great harmony. Delectable dishes accompanied by inspiring conversations with new friends remind me of the true joys of mealtime. This weekend is all about enhancing my self-care practices and trying new things, so I opt for the forest bathing experience. Our cheerful guide walks us through the lush Canyon Ranch Woodside grounds, pointing out birds’ harmonic melodies and textures of unique plants and trees as we mentally bathe in the invigorating sights and sounds. I like to think of forest bathing as a massage for the mind. Lingering moments of stillness and presence transport me into a deep state of bliss, one that feels refreshingly grounding.

The final morning in my treehouse sanctuary, I reflect on the past few days. Navigating the twists and turns of life begets both resiliency and challenge, and offering myself a weekend to re-orchestrate a connection to nature and myself has realigned my journey and inspired what’s to come. CARTAGENA CHARISMATIC COLOMBIA FUSES SPONTANEITY WITH TROPICAL RELAXATION by ANNA CONSTANTINO

M

y eyes fixate on the crystal shoreline as our plane descends over the Colombian coast. A taxi ride from Cartagena to Isla Barú offers a glimpse of cosmopolitan allure, yet soon enough we immerse in an off-roading expedition to the peninsula. Verdant backroads and a charming donkey encounter prove to be well worth the turbulence. The car slows to a halt and a pair of grandiose amber gates open, unveiling the quintessential island getaway at Hotel Las Islas. A safari-meets-paradise niche is realized when a flock of turkeys grace us with a welcoming song under a canopy of mangroves. My friend Ottocina and I arrive in the lobby, eager to explore the property. Las Islas champions fifty-six bungalows, half of which reside in lush treetops, the remainder wading by the turquoise ocean. The concept of balance is clearly understood here, as the yoga studio and gym sit adjacent to the ice cream parlor. The plethora of activities at our disposal feels infinite, from kayaking and boating to helicopter rides and reef snorkeling. Carpe diem was truly the encompassing attitude of the trip’s inception. Post-pandemic spontaneous jet-setting is a prospect

I consider on the regular–yet often easier dreamt than done. Fortuitous timing arose when my agent at Santa Barbara Travel Bureau suggested a South American excursion–a seemingly unfamiliar yet enticing endeavor. One thing lead to another, and suddenly I’m swan-diving into the Caribbean Sea. As an island novice, I anticipate rising with the sounds of crashing waves on white sand. Little do I know, the gecko screams permeating the bungalow roof make for a wildly effective alarm clock, instead. After dipping in our plunge pool and a hearty helping of locally-harvested pitaya, we take a boat to the private island, Isleta, a secondary property of the hotel boasting seclusion and sanctuary. An afternoon of kayaking, peacock sightings, and seaside reading puts us in a tranquil state–but that’s not to say the island doesn’t have its surprises. Have you ever seen an iguana do a belly flop? Yet another rarity checked off my bucket list. Lounging works up an appetite, so naturally we opt for the most accessible solution: three whole pineapples. We chop them open with primitive demeanor, using only our hands and a butter knife, enjoying every drop of the succulent treat. After all, the jungle requires endurance. Our afternoon culminates

with dinner at Choco Bar, an enticing spot based on its stunning locale and nonchalant embracement of dining in a bikini. Ordering the Grilled Lobster is instinctual, as I’m confident it was caught offshore only hours before. It is the freshest lobster I’ve eaten– yet the view still captures my unwavering attention. Dinner is followed by a nighttime excursion to Isla Cholon: the notorious “party beach” by day and host to bioluminescence at night. My excitement heightens as our boat whirs through a sea of blackness approaching a lightning storm, a brilliant spectacle that our driver reassures us is too distant to cause harm. We jump into the warm water, watching our feet and fingers illuminate with every movement, a breathtaking parallel to the stars above.

We catch one final ocean sunrise before heading to our next destination: Old Town Cartagena, or “the walled city.” Rainbow-colored houses dripping with bougainvillea line cobblestone paths leading us to Hotel Casa San Agustín. The luxury hotel is wellknown for its colonial charm, preserving its original architecture, frescoes, and iconic four-arch aqueduct. The Casa is both sophisticated and playful–it’s the type of place where you wind up with a mojito in-hand before you have a chance to set down your bags. We tour the quaint

grounds and bike through town on pastel cruisers, taking in the neighborhood charm and mesmerizing fry stand scents. A dip in the pool cools us off and we swiftly make our way to Celele Restaurant, a renowned culinary gem of the region. Upon arriving, a wave of comfort comes over me as if stepping into someone’s eclectic home, chatter buzzing and drinks flowing. We watch the chef prepare dishes from our table, a lively spectacle and sensory experience. Feasting on pulled pork confit and fresh fish quenches our appetite for authentic cuisine that captures the scope of the region’s ingredients and techniques. We wake with church bells and a basket of buttery pastries, followed by a morning massage. I am greeted with a kiwi popsicle and the world’s softest robe at Arum Spa, where a blissful hour blips by and afterward I retreat to the steam room to detoxify. Our afternoon takes us through Getsemani, a neighborhood popularized for its museumworthy graffiti, lively bistros, and eclectic charm. We land

in the whimsical Parque del Centenario. The Park reveals itself as a midtown “zoo,” as the squeaks of baby macaque monkeys and a family of sloths pull our attention to the trees. A fruit stand pit-stop and two cold beers later, we arrive at the marina for a Colombian culinary class with Foodies. Sailboats glide on the water as we sip on rum and smash plantains. We leave with full bellies and a soothing buzz– the calm before the storm. A humid downpour catches us by surprise, leaving us no choice but to dash back to our hotel on foot. We race through narrow streets and alleyways, stomping through puddles with youthful demeanor. The hotel gates swing open and we scurry inside. A sigh of relief–or perhaps delight. I throw myself on the feathery duvet, my hair in wet whisps, as I relish in the adrenaline.
