LETTER FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
I CAN’T IMAGINE EVER LEAVING SANTA BARBARA. How can another spot compete? So when my
friend Ellie O’Connell made the difficult decision to move to Paris (as she is battling ALS and wants to spend as much time as possible with her daughter who attends university there), I understood why she would leave. Ellie continues to battle her horrific disease but always with such grace (coincidently, her daughter’s name). Her daily musings on life in Paris have captured thousands with her blog Have Some Decorum, and she has become an inspiration to so many. I have been lucky enough to visit her in her beautiful flat every time I am in that breathtaking city, and she is always the consummate hostess. Using fine china scored at a flea market and serving the chicest of macaroons, she has a home full of love and laughter (and lots of flowers). I begged Ellie to be a contributing writer for Santa Barbara Magazine from afar and asked her to take us to her favorite parts of the City of Lights—through her lens (“A Santa Barbaran in Paris,” page 150). If you have to leave our utopia, Paris is not a bad second choice. Although if you ask Ellie, Santa Barbara is always in her heart. If a European jaunt is not on the itinerary at the moment, you can always take a day trip in our own backyard. This is just what our cover girl Angela Lindvall did when she hit the open road toward Santa Ynez on the back of a motorcycle (“The Wild One,” page 120). That the supermodel is wearing the coolest of fall fashions doesn’t hurt, but it’s Angela who is the most fascinating subject. A strong woman raised in an industry that can break lesser spirits, she has stood firm in her holistic and spiritual beliefs. She has just launched a new wellness retreat in Topanga Canyon and is sharing her lifestyle with us mere mortals. However, it’s when she rides through the hills of Santa Barbara on the back of her photographer boyfriend Chris Chandler’s bike that she feels most free. Speaking of freedom, living in Ojai is about as far away from the big city as one can get. Life on a rural property seems pretty idyllic for Alexandra and Hanson Gifford. Their Reginald D. Johnsondesigned home is whimsical and elegant and free of the traditional design rules. We get a glimpse inside their historical home (“Orchard Oasis,” page 140). The invitation for Santa Barbara Magazine’s 40th anniversary party “Reverie by the Sea” (page 132) was well received. With more than 400 in attendance, the soiree—masterfully designed by Yifat Oren and Stefanie Cove of Yifat Oren & Associates—was one for the books. Our town celebrated this magazine’s milestone in a major way. We take you inside the festivities and thank you for letting us be a part of the fabric of this town for more than four decades. It is the timelessness of the city that is so unique. It basically has looked the same for almost a century, which is pretty rare and a fact that should not be taken lightly. The characters change, come and go, and leave their mark in some way, but it is the background beauty and the love of place that is constant.

Sophie Haber and Eliot Hodges have adventure on their minds as they set out on a journey around the world—starting in Mexico and ending up who knows where if these two follow their vision. “It’s so empowering to be able to create with the cultures we come across and learn from one another,” says Haber, 19, a professional model deeply influenced by her family, who is connected in the world of photography. Hodges (who hails from an artisan family), 23, was born in France and grew up traveling the world, sailing, driving, and flying. Having been raised in Santa Barbara and Sayulita, Mexico, he feels most at home documenting his cultural interactions through photos and blogging. “One of our goals,” says the couple, “is to be able to give back to mother earth through our passion and collaborating with visionaries and artists around the globe.” Follow their journeys and curated artisan marketplace, which features apparel and other curios. –GINA TOLLESON

CONTINENTAL DIVIDE World traveler and designer Veronica M. Toub mobilizes chic Aesthetically inspiring and known for her globe-trotting glamorous voyages, Veronica M. Toub launched her luxury lifestyle brand VMT—jewelry, textiles, and clothing—in 2013. “I have always been inspired by the beauty and history of other cultures and wanted to combine my travel experiences—the textiles, old jewelry, and artifacts I have been collecting for years—into my designs,” says the now California-based mother of one, after spending extended periods of time in Turkey, Lebanon, Bali, South America, Africa, and Europe. Her jewelry collections mix natural elements such as horn and bone with fine diamonds and precious stones, while her clothing is a resort dream of bohemian meets Parisian je ne sais quoi with flowy blouses, embroidered dresses, and caftan couture. Recently, Toub was inspired to retrofit and customize a sleek, vintage Airstream—a 31-foot Sovereign model, circa 1973—“from stem to stern, to create a sophisticated nomadic shopping experience for the 21st century,” she says of the space, christened Voyage Travel. Veronica offers customers an exclusive shopping experience from around the world at their doorstep, in our case—to our shores. Look for a VMT experience in Montecito this fall. –G.T. avid Potter began handcrafting wines for Potek Winery in 2012, bottling small lots of Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Grenache, and Syrah. “Every year, there are some barrels in the cellar that stand out to me,” he says. “These barrels—which are more nuanced, intense, and carry distinct expressions—are bottled under my new label.” Winemaker and proprietor of Municipal Winemakers, Potter’s second venture in Santa Barbara is so-called for his greatgrandfather whose name was changed to Benjamin Potter as he passed through Ellis Island in 1917 when he immigrated to the United States from Romania. Potek is housed in The Mill, themillsb.com—a modern spin on the feed mill originally constructed in 1904 by the Boykin family—which will also include Third Window Brewery (founded by Kris Parker, the grandson of the late Fess Parker), Wildwood Kitchen, Becker Studios Design/Construction, Pelago Design, AB Design Studio, and an event center. – C HA R LOTTE B RYANT

Scent of a Woman
is known for her many talents. But if she had to pick a favorite passion, it would be perfume. The artist/photographer/ designer made her first “magic potion” at age 4, rolling rosemary, lavender, cat fur (her pet’s), and vodka around in a bottle. Decades later, she found herself soothing her colicky newborn twins in the misty, jasmine-scented air of her Mesa backyard and had a lightbulb idea to bottle 1,000 tiny jasmine flowers with her husband’s rather expensive vodka. The scent worked more magic with her babies, and local store owners quickly gobbled up the product. Over the years, she swapped pricey liquor for organic grape alcohol and made a name for herself, attracting devoted customers and celebrity clients including Josie Bissett and Taylor Dayne as well as commissions—currently she’s creating something special for Ganna Walksa’s Lotusland. She recently moved her business from her home to a shed behind The Garden Market on Santa Claus Lane, where she “hugged out a lease” and transformed the boxy space into a mystical hideaway. Adorned with hanging seashells, chandeliers, and driftwood lamps, the shed is a haven for her artwork, jewelry, and clothing. Giddy with the newfound thrill of being a shop owner, she’s making and breaking her own rules, rethinking price points, giving away products when she feels like it, and supporting local artists and friends who wouldn’t otherwise be able to get their goods to retail. Tucked in corners of her shop are gypsy wraps, cashmere ponchos, and of course her signature fragrances—the reason she does what she does. “Perfume transports us from where we are to where we want to be,” she says. “It makes us happy.” –J.B.K.

WHAT DOES SANTA BARBARA have in common with four legendary Broadway musicals (Les Misérables, Damn Yankees, Oliver!, Fiddler on the Roof)? Answer: our own nonprofit semi-professional Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble Theater (SBYET), which has performed all of those shows within the last decade at the Lobero Theater. It all started with Broadway veteran Janet Adderley, a Yale-trained thespian who founded SBYET as well as the Adderley School for the Performing Arts for students ages 4 to 13, which serves as the farm team for SBYET productions. According to local filmmaker Ivan Reitman, “What Janet Adderley does…is take these kids and makes them believe in themselves.” (Quite an understatement when you consider Adderley School students have serenaded Oprah Winfrey and sung with Andrea Bocelli.) Adderley hand selects SBYET participants to receive ongoing acting, vocal, and dance training at the Adderley School. The goal each year is to produce a full-scale Broadway musical accompanied by a live orchestra. During the last nine years, SBYET’s over-the-top results have won accolades from many, including resident singer/songwriter Kenny Loggins, who deems SBYET “the best theatre production I’ve seen in Santa Barbara.”–L.D. THE POWER OF WORDS AFTER MOVING to Santa Barbara at age 14 and experiencing a vicious cyber-bullying attack, AIJA MAYROCK won the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s 10-10-10 for Student Filmmaking and Screenwriting competition in 2011 for her screenplay A Heart’s Journey and decided to use her writing to help others that have fallen prey to traumatizing intimidation. As a high school student at Laguna Blanca, Mayrock (now 19 and attending NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts) began writing the “book that I never had but always needed,” she says. And it seems that she is not alone. Following the initial selfpublication of The Survival Guide to Bullying ($9.99, available at Chaucer’s Bookstore, 805-6826787, chaucersbooks.com) last October, the book was promptly acquired by Scholastic. “Every time I’m here, I go right to the beach—even if I sit in my car and write,” she says. “This book would not exist without my move to Santa Barbara. This community has allowed me to define my passion and develop it.” –C.B.

From there, Trainor went on to have a prolific television and film career, starring in projects such as The Goonies, Back to the Future, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Forrest Gump, and more. After relocating to Montecito in 1991 to raise her son, Alex, she also lent her style to more than a few homes in town—as well as Spielberg’s studio office years earlier. Often described as thoughtful and generous, Trainor supported dozens of causes—from the Unity Shoppe’s annual telethon to disaster relief, cancer research, and clean water for developing countries. As much as she was recognized for her philanthropy publicly, her characteristic anonymous generosity testified to the qualities that will continue to make her memory a compelling influence in Santa Barbara. –C.B.

Debby Davison’s impact on Santa Barbara extended well beyond prime time. Before succumbing to breast cancer on July 7, the well-known anchor who appeared on KEYT from 1990 to 2006 had many passions. The Massachusetts native worked in news in West Palm Beach, Tucson, and Los Angeles before moving to Santa Barbara in 1990. And volunteering in the community she loved was one of the biggest. “Whenever anyone asked her to get involved, she was there,” remembers her friend and colleague, Martha Bull. Davison volunteered annually on several fund-raisers, including the Unity Telethon, which helps disadvantaged families, and the national Children’s Miracle Network Telethon benefitting Cottage Hospital. As one of the most sought-after emcees in Santa Barbara’s nonprofit circuit, Davison was involved with numerous organizations over the years, including the Dream Foundation and the Celebrity Authors’ Luncheon to benefit CALM (Child Abuse Listening and Mediation). Among her favorite causes was the Council on Alcoholism and Drugs (CADA), which enlisted her on three Summit for Danny treks around the globe. A genuine love for giving back helped make Davison approachable and accessible while in an often insulated industry. “Debby treated the whole community like family,” says longtime friend Anne Towbes. “With open arms, Debby did whatever she could to help. At the start of her tenure in Hollywood in the early 1980s, Mary Ellen Trainor Zemeckis (1952-2015) worked 16-hour days as an assistant to directors John Milius and Steven Spielberg; she quickly learned moviemaking and was subsequently tapped for an executive studio position. This work ethic was clearly something that accompanied her throughout life, including when she studied broadcast journalism at San Diego State University. “I went to school at 11 in the morning until 3. I got home at 3:30. I studied and did my homework until 5. I went to bed at 5 and got up at midnight. My shift started at 1 in the morning. So I worked until 10 and then went to school,” she recalled to writer L.D. Porter (“Adobe Romance,” December/ January 2011). Shore Thing Those who walk through the striking black and brass doors of the new E Madison on Coast Village Road often burst out the same thing: “I want to move in!” And that’s exactly what owner and principle designer Courtney Dever wants her customers to feel. A relaxed, welcoming, lived-in look comes from a thoughtfully curated mix of furnishings, finishes, and textiles all intended to be well worn. An overstuffed chair seemingly covered in linen is in fact upholstered with washable indoor/outdoor fabric (parents rejoice!). Dever pulls lines—such as Guy Chaddock—aiming to offer both customers and local designers a solid go-to resource for staples. The shop also offers custom design services; handpicked fabrics are available for furniture orders and pillows, and when swapped seasonally, are a fun and quick way to freshen up a look. Bath towels, white linens, rope accents, glass votives, blue and white vases, and candles round out the breezy, beachy Santa
Barbara aesthetic. Upstairs is full of kitchenware, accessories, and gifts—from sweet children’s toys to decorative teaspoons. Chances are, you’re sure to find something you love. –JENNIFER BLAISE KRAMER E MADISON 1159 Coast Village Rd., Montecito, 805-618-1810, emadisonhome.com. Bee Cottage Story: How I Made a Muddle of Things and Decorated My Way Back to Happiness ($24.99, Sky Horse), part-time Santa Ynez Valley resident Frances Schultz takes readers through her two-year-long journey decorating Bee Cottage, the beloved East Hampton home she purchased in 2008. Inspired by House Beautiful’s 2011 makeover series on Bee Cottage (Schultz is a contributing editor for the magazine), this book uses Schultz’s tales of the lessons she learned during her renovations and the time and care put into each room to encourage readers to find their passion and do what they love. “Because the book is part memoir, I hope people will take from it that we all mess up and that we all have it within us to forgive ourselves as well as others,” says Schultz. “Then, and maybe only then, can we move on and make of our lives what we’re meant to make of them. The healing power of doing what you love is very real.” –LAURA LEWIS THE BEE COTTAGE STORY francesschultz.com. LUXURY SUITE ming and Ashley Ramsey travel to Paris and New York regularly to find unique treasures to bring to their storefront—which also doubles as an interior design business. “We want people to be inspired by the luxurious fabrics, furniture, and accessories we carry,” says Ramsey, “and to make your home feel lush but comfortable at the same time.” Throughout the shop are vignettes exuding just that—a striking plush sofa is paired with contemporary artwork and lots of metallic
accents while a bed is layered with wellappointed linens and coordinating patterned, oversized floor pillows below. In addition to their own HR Home Furniture and Fabric collection, they carry Ralph Lauren accessories, dinnerware, and furniture plus bedding and towels from London and Italy. Santa Barbara seems to be a magnet for beautiful people. But it’s notoriously hard on beautiful skin. Sun, surf, and wind exact a steep toll and can leave skin looking like the face of Mount Cathedral. Perhaps that’s why skincare gurus seem to crop up like California poppies on the hillsides. The latest entrant is actor and bestselling author Rob Lowe, who spent six years researching and developing PROFILE, profile 4men.com, a skin-care range for men. Lowe says he was inspired, in part, by his surf habit. “I spend a lot of time at the great local breaks—Rincon, Hammonds, et cetera—and nothing beats up a guy’s skin like a day surfing,” he says. “Skin care is critical unless you want your face to look like Ty Cobb’s baseball mitt. It’s a main reason I created Profile’s unique blend of moisturizing and anti-aging products.” Profile products (from $24.50)—particularly the face wash—have a distinctively masculine aroma: Schott leather, Norton hog, and sea spray. NATURA CULINA, naturaculina .com, another Santa Barbarabased skin-care line, comes in a range of beguiling fragrances— body butter scented with coconut and just a hint of pear is a cult favorite (from $11). “Beautiful aromas have always elevated me,” says founder Lenka Tinka, who grew up in the historic spa city of Carlsbad, Czech Republic. A personal trainer, Tinka began creating lotions and soaps at home and distributing them to friends; clientele grew through

word-of-mouth. Today, Natura Culina products are available at Lily’s and Alice’s Nail Boutique on Coast Village Road as well as online. Many local skin-care lines evolved out of their founders’ interest in botanicals. Suzanne Fuller’s METAMOUR, metamour skincare.com, combines locally sourced botanical essences with Helichrysum talicum, the oil of a plant from Corsica known for regenerating collagen and regrowing cells (from $12). “It carries ketones more effectively than any other essential oil, and I put it in all my products,” says Fuller, who uses organic ingredients wherever possible. “There is a lot of cancer in my family and among my friends, so I know how important it is to have clean products.” The founder of THE GRAPESEED thegrapeseedcompany .com, Kirsten Frasier Cotte spent two years traveling the world by boat before docking in Santa Barbara and launching her range of vinotherapy soaps, candles, and body products, including beard oil ($22) and SPF stick ($12.99). All are upcycled from the antioxidant-rich by-products of the California wine industry.

WHAT Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1999 during the height of his train-
ing for the 2000 Olympic Trials, Hall is passionate about promoting fundraising, research, and treatment for the disease. Around the same time, he was introduced to Platinum Performance while training at Berkeley with swim coach Mike Bottom, who was dating a veterinarian at the Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Clinic in Los Olivos, and saw the potential of an early iteration of the omega-3 nutritional supplement. WHERE Since relocating to Santa Ynez four years ago for Platinum Performance, Hall has also plunged into public policy, serving on the boards of several integrated not-for-profit health-care systems and is crafting an initiative for healthcare benefits for youth enrolled in sports. “Being close to the water (for me) and the mountains (for my wife), it’s the perfect place for our kids to grow up,” he says, “We’re fortunate to be where we are.” Last year, he was also approached by Buellton mayor John Connolly and has since been working to spearhead the building of a multisport swimming facility in the valley. –C.B. 92

Other works in the show render the artists’ original prints threedimensional, like the seemingly whimsical children’s pajamas that can also be interpreted as symbols of lost innocence. The show’s title alludes to the material presence of its monumental sculpture as well as the conceptual dialogue underlying the artists’ collaborative method, which they describe as “tugging back and forth” between ideas. For Goodman and Puccinelli, “tug” ultimately serves as a metaphor for life’s journey. –L.D. PORTER WESTMONT RIDLEY-TREE MUSEUM OF ART 955 La Paz Rd., Santa Barbara, 805-565-6162, westmontmuseum.org.

A professor in the communication department at UC Santa Barbara, Daniel Linz’s research spans from the topics of media violence, pornography, and pretrial publicity to testing assumptions made by legal systems in the area of the First Amendment. But his studies in communication don’t end there. While he is not a trained artist, Linz understands the necessity of creative expression and views his painting as yet another academic discipline. “Seeing and looking are our most fundamental forms of information seeking,” he explains. “My research into visual communication has always been driven by our strong tendency to both celebrate and censor images of the human form.” His landscapes especially employ a variety of treatments to produce vibrant and energetic impressions striking a pleasant balance between detail and abstraction. –CHARLOTTE BRYANT

ew artists willingly characterize their own art as “rude”, “pestering,” or “unhip”—or risk using humorous imagery to raise serious issues like hunger, racism, or child neglect. Yet Santa Barbara-based artists Dane Goodman and Keith Puccinelli do exactly that in “tug,” their collaborative exhibition at Westmont’s Ridley-Tree Museum of Art from September 2 to October 17. “Tug” was prompted by an earlier Goodman/Puccinelli collaboration: In 2013, the museum purchased 110 monoprints—each bearing the hand of both artists—for its permanent collection. Director Judy Larson’s decision to exhibit the prints in the museum propelled the artists to add roughly 100 new works to the mix, including a giant tugboat sculpture. y now, most food-lovers—from curious upstarts to bona fide gourmets—know the mantra of a besttaste scenario: Seek out the freshest ingredients and buy directly from the folks who work the land from whence they came. For those handy in the kitchen yet unequipped to grow their own, farmers markets have always done the trick. For those craving pro preparation, farm-to-table restaurants are flourishing like tomato plants in warm weather. Improving on that theme is Santa Barbara’s Rancho San Julian. “Because of the drought, I’ve had time to diversify my beef business and showcase more of what the ranch has to offer,” says Elizabeth Poett, 35, part of the ranch’s long line of family owners. “I have a passion for food and I love putting on parties, so this seemed like the next step.” By inviting guests to the very acreage that produces the protein so generously arranged across the shaded outdoor dining space, a San Julian ranch-to-table lunch doesn’t get much fresher. And there’s more. After a late-morning arrival to ranch headquarters situated in a shallow valley west of Gaviota Pass, patrons gather beneath an old oak for lessons in lore from Elizabeth’s dad, Jim Poett, the ranch’s general manager. Jim knows his stuff, having absorbed and studied the family tree back to 1837, when the Spanish crown granted the land to José de la Guerra, whose granddaughter, Francisca de la Guerra, and her husband, Thomas Bloodgood Dibblee, are Jim’s great grandparents. The 14,000-acre ranch—roughly the size of Manhattan Island—has been owned and operated by the CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Elizabeth Poett in her family’s early 1800s “Casa” on Rancho San Julian; Jim Poett slices the succulent oak wood-grilled tri-tip; guests dining under the vined pergola. “Because of the drought, I’ve had time to diversify my beef business and showcase more of what the ranch has to offer. I have a passion for food and I love putting on parties, so this seemed like the next step.” –ELIZABETH POETT original family and its descendants since its inception. While guests snack on empanadas and sip iced hibiscus tea, Jim fields questions about running a rural, traditional enterprise in modern-day Southern California—there’s insight on freerange ranching and lots of talk about the drought. Meanwhile, from the kitchen of the nearby ranch house emerges the bustle of the coming feast. His wife, Marianne Partridge—who has taught daughter Elizabeth everything she knows about throwing a party—is probably fine-tuning the carrot soup. But first, there’s a tour of that original “Casa,” as the family calls it, which was built in the early 1800s and still harbors generations past. “I’m sure it’s haunted,” Elizabeth says. “They’re good ghosts, still dancing on the porch.” Then the group gets a talk in biodynamics on the ranch’s seven-acre spread from head farmer Chris Thompson. The soil is dark and the rows are crisp with healthy greens and various vegetables providing bounties that make for new lunch menus according to season. Appetites sufficiently whetted, they wander back to this: Dappled sunlight through the pergola. Jam jars filled with fresh-cut flowers. Mexican serape tablecloths. The peppered aroma of grilled tri-tip from the oak-wood barbecue. “It was a long, leisurely country lunch,” reflects Mary Heebner, an artist and writer attending with her photographer husband. “Plus a history lesson.” –KEITH HAMM

Housed in a tiny cottage on Solvang’s quaint Atterdag Square, Bacon & Brine, the far-from-ordinary sandwich shop owned by Chef Pink (aka Crystal DeLongpré) and wife Courtney Rae DeLongpré, is a haven for pork-loving foodies. Pink, a TV veteran (the Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen), helmed restaurant kitchens in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, followed by executive chef stints at Santa Barbara’s Epiphany and Square One restaurants. Courtney Rae, a Santa Ynez Valley native and Smith College graduate, focuses on all things fermented (she’s the “Brine”), and concocts the custom-made probiotics for sale in B&B’s cooler. The Facebook-accessible menu changes daily, with inspired combinations like beer-braised shoulder with smoked onion, raw caraway sauerkraut, and pickled mustard seed on ciabatta bread. Food ingredients are sourced within 100 miles, and Jake Francis’s Valley Piggery, where heritage-breed pigs are raised in pastures and woodlands, provides the meat—the fundamental ingredient of B&B’s succulent fare. –L.D. WOMEN & WINE Now heading into its sixth vintage, Kitá Wines has been churning out luscious red and white blends since its debut in 2010, when the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians purchased Camp 4 Vineyard, originally planted by the late Fess Parker. Sitting at the helm is Tara Gomez, the only recognized female Native American winemaker in the United States. “In a male-dominated industry, I feel a sense of respect and privilege to be representing my Chumash tribe and culture,” says the Cal State Fresno graduate who has worked in the wine industry here and in Europe since earning her bachelor of science in enology in 1998. Meaning “our valley oak” in the native Chumash language, Kitá is known for its Rhône and Bordeaux varietals, most of which are grown on the Camp 4 property. Especially delicious are the 2013 T’AYA blend ($22) of Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc—a creamy, vibrant white wine perfect for a warm afternoon—as well as the full-bodied 2011 Syrah Reserve ($40), which can hold up well with a hearty steak dinner. “I’ve always felt that in order to make wine, you have to understand the varietal and visit the different regions to explore and taste—it’s about learning the culture, history, and traditions of winemaking,” says Gomez. “Through my travels, I’ve learned a lot about Old World winemaking and now blend New World techniques with those traditions.” –G.Z.T. A Place in the SUN reflects a nod toward southern France: Indeed, Auberge du Soleil, in the Napa Valley, began as a California-French restaurant some three decades ago. Since then, the property has evolved into a welcoming hillside inn with 50 rooms and suites and a reputation as an elegantly understated getaway. There’s a fresh new look for its TOP TO BOTTOM: accommodations—a Suzanne Tucker A newly renoredesign that epitomizes California vated guest room; wine-country chic, with a light-infused a serene spa treatment room. palette of sandy beiges, creamy limestone, and shades of pale terra-cotta. Fireplaces and sculptural stand-alone bathtubs enhance the feel of a private romantic retreat, while spacious terraces underscore the indooroutdoor lifestyle that characterizes the area. There are other thoughtful touches, including house-made refreshments, a yoga mat, and a complimentary stocked mini-fridge. Of course, the room decor has to compete with the surroundings—to-die-for views of vineyards and olive groves in the valley. The pool area—dubbed La Plage—has also been reimagined as an outdoor living room with oversize chaises and canopied day beds. Designed to resemble a European monastery, the 7,000-square-foot Auberge spa has its own soaking pools and gardens. In tribute to the harvest season of the surrounding world-renowned wineries, this fall, the spa is offering complimentary glasses of wine chosen by the sommelier to pair with signature treatments. For example, a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon accompanies the Vineyard Déjà Vu ($300 for 90 minutes)—a three-phase skin-care treatment that begins with buffing the skin with crushed grape seeds, continues with a fragrant scalp treatment incorporating towels steeped in jasmine-infused grape-seed tea, and culminates with a full-body massage using warm grape-seed oil. If you want to enjoy your wine with a meal as well, there’s a famously extensive wine list at the Michelin-starred restaurant, where executive chef Robert Curry incorporates fresh, seasonal Napa Valley produce in his Mediterranean-inspired wine-country cuisine—meals made even more delectable by the memorable panorama from the valley-view terrace. –JOAN TAPPER THE VERY NAME

DIVINE EXCURSIONS Any vacation in the Napa Valley should include time to explore the wineries that not only produce world-class vintages but also offer exquisite settings for a tasting or a picnic. Nineteenth-century Old World style provides the architectural backdrop at Mayacamas and Whetstone wineries— both part of Terroir, the lifestyle group founded by Montecito residents Charles and Ali Banks. Situated on 470 acres near the top of Mt. Veeder—centered by an imposing three-story stone winery that dates back to 1899—Mayacamas produces wines that are classic in style. “Mayacamas has the reputation for being the most ageable Cabernets,” notes estate director Jimmy Hayes, “though, of course, it’s also delicious out of the gate. This is wine that will last in a collector’s cellar.” Owned by the Banks in partnership with the Schottenstein family since 2013, the winery has continued its historic emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot. “The opportunity to restore and rejuvenate a legend is what drove me to acquire it,” says Charles Banks. “The vineyards are spread around the top of the mountain, providing an extremely diverse set of microclimates and aspects. All this contributes to the in-
credible complexity of the Mayacamas wines.” Visitors can arrange tastings—which include both new releases and older bottles—only by appointment. “Every visit is private,” Hayes says. “The place is yours for a few hours. It’s a unique experience.” Recently, the winery was the site of a truly extraordinary event, when it offered a one-of-a-kind package as part of a Napa Valley charity auction: two nights of glamping at Mayacamas for six couples. San Francisco’s Shelter Co. set up a luxe tent village, furnishing the accommodations with beds and rugs; James Beardacclaimed Blackberry Farm in Tennessee did the catering. “We had tastings of Terroir wines,” remembers Hayes, as well as a special tasting of six decades of Mayacamas vintages. At the Whetstone Wine Cellars, founded in 2002, winemaker and owner Jamey Whetstone concentrates on Pinots. “This is a small, family operation, and we lean heavily on Burgundies and Rhône-style wines,” notes his wife, Michelle.

“Jamey and Michelle Whetstone are a perfect fit for the Terroir family,” says Banks. “Jamey is one of the top winemakers I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.” And Michelle has transformed the château—a lovely historic building dating to 1885—“into one of the most beautiful tasting rooms in all of Napa.” Here, too, tastings are private and by appointment only. “Guests can take advantage of the grounds, with its beautiful buildings and mature trees,” says Michelle. “They can have a cheese and charcuterie option or enjoy a ‘picnic in a bottle,’ which includes a blanket, a prepared lunch, and a bottle of wine.” With the fall harvest season, though, visitors may want to move inside. “We light the fire,” she adds, “and it feels like someone’s living room.” –J.T. WITH ITS SLEEK HIGH-RISES and multistory shopping malls, Singapore is the epitome of the supermodern hardworking Asian island-state. After-hours though, the local pastime is eating, and thanks to the city’s rich multicultural heritage, the food is varied and mouthwatering. The de facto national dish is chili crab, which is a gargantuan (think two-pound) Asian crustacean cooked in the shell and served up with a mildly spicy—and extremely messy—red sauce. A favorite place to order it is No Signboard Seafood, which, indeed, started out as a signless stall in one of Singapore’s famous hawker markets and has expanded into four venues, including the sleek Esplanade by the river. Before and after dinner, cocktails are de rigueur. Tourists head for Raffles, the elegant 19th-century hostelry with the atmospheric Long Bar, where the famed Singapore Sling was invented. For a hipper scene, try Jigger & Pony in a former art gallery at the edge of Chinatown. The drink menu categorizes the libations by classic, vintage, and signature and offers everything from an Old Fashioned to a Ramos Gin Fizz to a Donkey Kong. If you come in a congenial group, you can order a Punch Bowl, which holds 15 to 20 potent servings of, say, a Zombie or a Pisco Punch. –J.T.

When you’ve graced the covers of more than 100 magazines—most of them being the coveted Vogue—it would seem hard for one’s mind to stay grounded. Not the case with Oklahoma-born, Missouri-bred supermodel Angela Lindvall. Her career has spanned from Europe to Manhattan and around the globe countless times, but it’s California where the 36-yearold mother of two young boys stakes her roots in the wild nature of Topanga Canyon. Innately adventurous, ravenously protective of the environment, and with an intellectual thirst for integrative health, Lindvall is a yoga master who hosts holistic retreats at her canyon compound and is graduating from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition as a practitioner this fall. With a focus on sustainability, Lindvall is developing a platform for Mind, Body, Style, a resource site for healthy lifestyle tips and responsible brands she feels passionate about. But it’s not all work and no play for the model dubbed the “Green Goddess,” who regularly escapes off the beaten path to the 805. “I love Santa Barbara as a getaway from our day-to-day lives,” says Angela, whose boyfriend Chris Chandler (who shot this feature), went to the Brooks Institute. “The freest feeling I have is taking motorbike trips through wine country. I have so many responsibilities and demands in my life, so riding on the back of the bike is a way to let go of total control and just be.” n

n a June summer’s night, the BACARA RESORT & SPA lit up like Gatsby’s lawn. White lights twinkled above the sparkling pool, palm trees soared above, and swanlike ballerinas greeted 400 well-heeled guests, from locals to socialites to celebrities and former cover subjects, all clinking champagne flutes to toast Santa Barbara Magazine’s 40th anniversary. Our festive affair was imagined by YIFAT OREN & ASSOCIATES, mastermind party planners to the stars—the likes of Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Drew Barrymore, Kevin Costner, and most recently was tapped by Jennifer Aniston for her stealth nuptials— who dreamed up a Venetian Carnivale-style soiree with a Santa Barbara spin. “The location was perfect and quite unexpected, as we transformed the Bacara Resort & Spa’s Spanish Colonial-style pool deck into a masquerade party with magical entertainment elements provided by Elan Artists such as jugglers, contortionists, strolling ballerinas, and two shows in the pool by Aqualillies,” recalls Stefanie Cove, partner in Yifat Oren & Associates. Throughout the evening, guests were mesmerized by the mystical mood along with the backdrop sets created by REVELRY EVENT DESIGN, pausing often to don a mask for a photo. Partygoers lingered over small bites from chef ROBBIE WILSON of Mattei’s Tavern paired with TERROIR SELECTIONS’ Sandhi and Qupé wines, indulged in the decadent KOLIKOF CAVIAR & SALMON iced bar, and sipped special cocktails—the 40 Strong and Venetian Casanova—by TEQUILA CASA DRAGONES and YACHT CLUB VODKA. The night sequenced to an even more magical mode when synchronized swimmers appeared on the pool deck in throwback black-and-white swimsuits and dove into the water to perform while DJ MICHAEL SMITH of Playlist Generation entranced the crowd and light balls playfully illuminated the pool. Afterparty spirit ensued upstairs in the Rotunda with more music, dancing, stargazing, Tequila Casa Dragones Joven, and Beau Joie Champagne. A pop-up photo shoot by LA CHAMBRE PHOTOGRAPHIQUE captured faces who have helped shape the magazine while the final rallying guests continued to toast the city on its past, present, and future. “Santa Barbara is just the best of California. Most people think of it as a relaxed, serene town, but we wanted to throw a real party…a worthy celebration of the magazine’s 40th anniversary!” says event expert Yifat Oren. “A little Santa Barbara meets Ibiza, so to speak. Hence, Reverie by the Sea, mixed in with a bit of Venetian Carnivale. It was spectacular!” n

Yifat’s S.B. Entertaining Tips • Always remind guests to bring a wrap to cozy up in the evenings when entertaining—one of the best parts about Santa Barbara is the amazing weather in the daytime and the cool evenings.
• You don’t always have to incorporate the sea when entertaining here. One of my favorite things about the area is that there are such beautiful spots on the ocean and in the mountains.
• There are so many farms in the vicinity—make sure to incorporate local and seasonal produce in your specialty cocktails and menus. It is also nice to include local wine.

jai was still a sleepy town called Nordhoff in 1914, when lawyer H. R. Cole and his wife, Nellie, arrived from Ohio and commissioned young Pasadena architect Reginald D. Johnson to build a house on 25 acres at the valley’s east end. Johnson would go on to fame as the designer of Santa Barbara’s Biltmore Hotel, among many other creations. The Coles’ residence, Home Acres, would pass to the Gates family in the 1940s and then, in 2011, to Alexandra and Hanson Gifford, who have combined a keen appreciation for the home’s history with a penchant for eye-popping color and personal style to brilliantly livable effect. Based in the Bay Area, where Alexandra is a health coach and yoga instructor and Hanson is a pioneering medical device entrepreneur, the couple first connected with Ojai when their daughter Katharine (now 23) attended The Thacher School. Marshall (now 21) and Ellie (17) followed suit, so it wasn’t all that surprising when the idea of owning a small Ojai cottage surfaced. Instead, Hanson was taken by the Gates’ 3,800-squarefoot home the first time he saw it. What struck him, he remembers, “was the setting just above the valley floor and nestled against the hillside.” As for the house, it was “not too big or grand but with a symmetry and grace that makes it stand out. We didn’t move a single wall—it works fabulously just as it is.” “The house had good bones,” Alexandra says, “but it was a project. Every surface had to be resanded and repainted, and we had to rewire and redo the plumbing.” They replaced the toilets but kept most sinks, along with the vintage light fixtures, doorknobs, built-in cabinets and bookshelves, shutters, hardware, and assorted items like fireplace andirons and screens. “We were incredibly fortunate to have a group of real craftsmen restoring the property, led by Ty Jeffery,” notes Hanson, mostly “third-generation Ojai residents.” As for the interior, Alexandra leaned on her love of a bright palette, fabrics and memorabilia from extensive CLOCKWISE FROM BOTTOM RIGHT: A

travels, and inspiration from the bold patterns and hues of London’s Designers Guild. She worked closely with San Francisco designer Emily Taylor on paint and furnishings. The decor “was driven by Alexandra’s desire to have color,” Taylor remembers. “It needed to be friendly, wear well, and be practical, but fun!” The most traditional space is probably the living room, which vaguely recalls turn-of-the-century craftsman style with custom-fabricated red leather sofas, a glass mosaic dome ceiling fixture by Hilliard, and William Morris-print drapes. In the dining room, the hand-painted murals—by artist Ben Junta—evoke the 18th-century Chinese wallpaper that graces a room in France’s Château de Maintenon, but the surprising turquoise paneling reflects Alexandra’s touch. It sets off the modern custom walnut table, vintage Rose Tarlow chairs, John Pomp glass light fixture, and cherry sideboard by Ojai cabinetmaker Kris McCourtney. Unexpected colors continue in the kitchen’s canary yellow cabinets—also original—with black and white linoleum modeled after the marble flooring at Versailles. A diminutive powder room and laundry room are vivid lime green. The library is a showcase for family artistry—from the 1890s card table and chairs made by Alexandra’s great-great-grandfather in Germany to her son’s painting, The Ride, over the fireplace. Upstairs, a long, cabinet-lined gallery flanks the sunny south-facing bedrooms, each with its own personality. Ellie’s, with turquoise walls and raspberrypatterned curtains, recalls her travels in France and India. Marshall’s more subdued space includes another of his paintings, A Quiet Afternoon, while the master suite has sea foam-colored plaster walls and tropically inspired fabrics. The Giffords love to entertain, usually on the front patio and lawn, which overlooks the grove of Valencia oranges. “Just being at Home Acres is a relaxing experience,” says Hanson. The place is “remarkably quiet and secluded, with gentle breezes” and an astonishing variety of wildlife. “It’s an honor, privilege, and responsibility to be stewards of the property,” adds Alexandra. “Preserve the integrity of it…that’s what we want to do.” n

Joséphine “Chez Dumonet”
AGICAL. No matter if this is your first trip to Paris or your 50th, the result is the same and that is magical, truly magical. Waking up in the City of Lights early enough to take a brisk w alk with the fall breeze nipping at your flawlessly tied cashmere scarf, you will find wonderment on every rue. Start by grabbing a noisette roasted to nutty perfection at Frenchie To Go and then pop into an Uber and get over to the 15th arrondissement to the authentic P arisian farmers market, the Marché Grenelle. If you want to know what it’s like to be a true local, this is the spot. Here, French women walk their teckel à poil dur chiens while artfully selecting France’s fall offerings of aromatic earthy champignons, robust fromages from the French Alps, and hearty potatoes roasted in duck fat while their partners wander off to choose the perfect bouquet for Madame. Ah, but there are still so many rues to discover . Luckily, it is still early enough to get to your next stop, the flea market of all flea markets, the nostalgic Marché aux Puces. This is just the place to find that neoclassical demilune table you’ve been coveting for your entry. Don’t worry, you don’t have to try to squeeze it into your luggage—you can easily ship it back home without hassle via Camard. After such an exciting morning, it’s certainly time to relax. Head over to the secret/ not-so-secret 17th-century garden of the Palais-Royal. Sink into a much-coveted lounge chair, bask in the fall sunshine in front of the fountain, and let your imagination go wild as you realize that Monsieur Les Misérables himself, Victor Hugo, dined at the restaurant Le Grand Véfour, a stone’s throw from where you sit. Now that you are refreshed, it’s time to start primping for your evening out. Keeping it demure in a knee-length Lanvin skirt, Roger Vivier heels, a quintessential French turtleneck sweater, and a chic P errin clutch, stroll over to the 6th arrondissement to Joséphine “Chez Dumonet.” In this circa 1880 art nouveau restaurant, dine like l’ancienne bourgeoisie on confit du canard, boeuf bourguignon, and soufflé au Grand Marnier. With the weekend over, it’s time to get busy and that means one thing—le shopping. It’s not about going big in this town, it’s about the petite, thoughtful pieces that you will look back at years later and remember, “I found that in Paris.” Shop hand-engraved bottles of perfume at Serge Lutens, a vintage Chanel blazer at Didier Ludot, or a pair of sunnies “lunettes Françoise” from the new shop of ambassadrice of all things Parisian chic, Inès de la Fressange. Not leaving out the gentleman, a visit to Berluti is in order to indulge in irreproachable bespoke footwear from the company that has been perfecting this craftsmanship since 1895 because after all, the shoes make the man. Not forgetting that we are creatures of culture as well, the newly reimagined Musée National Picasso-Paris in the architecturally important Marais neighborhood is both historically intriguing and a testament to modernity . You will catch yourself thinking, “I didn’t know Picasso did that!” Without being completely selfish, let’s remember that we ha ve family back home who deserve a souvenir from P aris as well. Chocolates from haute chocolaterie Pierre Marcolini always do the trick. However, your main goal in Paris is to perfect the art of being a flâneur. Walk with your eyes, mind, and heart open on every ancienne rue and make a little magic of your own. Le sigh. n

A GRAND DAME KNOWN FOR ITS CLASSIC
Musée National PicassoParis is both historically intriguing and a testament to modernity.
STYLE, Le Bristol Paris is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year with notable events that evoke the 1925 opening of the iconic hotel. A Jazz Age-inspired spa day, a gala dinner with 1920s fashion, and a guided stroll through Art Deco-era landmarks of the City of Lights all highlight the fall. Whatever the season, however, there’s a timeless elegance about Le Bristol, whose neighbors in the Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré include the Elysée Palace (home of French presidents) and the finest haute couture boutiques. Inside, the landmark hotel’s 188 rooms and suites are appointed with 18thcentury furnishings and works of art, which also set the style for the public spaces. The clublike atmosphere of Le Bar, with its wood-paneled walls and tapestries, is a favorite spot for l’apero, while the hotel’s interior garden offers a serene respite in the city. “It is all perfection at the Bristol,” says a recent guest. “The glistening lobby is full of fabulous and glamorous people. And the level of service is top-notch.” Le Bristol’s restaurants have earned a rare four Michelin stars: three for Epicure and its executive chef Eric Frechon, and another for Le Bristol Brasserie. Not surprisingly, adds the guest, “The breakfasts are divine!” –JOAN TAPPER LE BRISTOL PARIS 112 Rue du Faubourg St. Honoré, Paris, France, 011-33-1-53-43-43-00, lebristolparis.com. A LIFETIME OF
EXPERIENCE
I first fell in love with construction when I was a teenager, taking a remodeling course in 1978. Since then, I’ve worked as a laborer, supervisor, foreman, finish carpenter and been an apprentice in plumbing, carpentry and even sculpting. I’m always drawing from this knowledge to create an unmatched experience for my clients.
When DD Ford restored our 1930’s house, it was the third time we’d hired them. They were an enormous asset. They had an instant understanding of what was important to us and figured out solutions to all of our unique challenges. We constantly reminisce about the process and how much we enjoyed the entire experience of working with them.
