Santa Cruz Island; Spanish Period to the Present
Preface
The Santa Cruz Island Foundation was established by the late Dr. Carey Stanton to promote research on California's Channel Islands. This current work has been undertaken as the second in a series of
occasional papers which will, in part, fulfill this mission. As institutions dedicated to the preservation of California history, both the Ventura County Museum of History & Art and the Santa Barbara Historical Society have encouraged the publication of articles about the California Channel Islands. Of the eighteen articles included in this Northern Channel Islands Anthology, three are published herein for the first time: Santa Rosa Island by A1 Vail and Marla Daily, Santa Cruz Island by Carey Stanton and Marla Daily, and Island Packers by Kirk L. Connally.
Santa Cruz Island is represented by only one article, since Occasional Paper Number 1 of the Santa Cruz Island Foundation, Santa Cruz Island Anthology, contains thirteen additional articles on this subject.
The articles herein are grouped first by island, east to west (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel), and then chronologically within. They cover a time span of over a century. Whenever possible, the photographs which accompanied the original articles have been included. An introductory page precedes each island section, and brief editorial notes, in italics, precede each article.
