On The Water Front

Why I am Running Again

I

, Dick Shaikewitz, am an incumbent Montecito Water District (MWD) director since 2006, holding a business degree from Northwestern University and a law degree from Washington University. I practiced law in Southern Illinois; primarily doing litigation. Montecito has been my home for 21 years.

I served six years as a Montecito Association director. The Music Academy used to have a summer wine and food event; I helped with it and headed it one summer. For a number of years, I served as a director of the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute.

For the last 19 years, I have been a non-commercial wine maker. Our group is called Los Cinco Locos. My own label is Domaine Jasminka. This year, we’ll produce 3,000 bottles. None is sold. We use it for family and friends, and give much away to charities and political organizations.

While MWD director, and with my legal background, I informed the board of situations where I thought legal action might be needed. Through my efforts, the District collected substantial sums.

Lower Water Bills?

In the 2006-07 fiscal year, the Montecito Water District (MWD) customers were using water at an unsustainable rate of more than 7,000 acre feet of water a year (AFY). Five percent of our residential customers were using 25 percent of our residential water account. Due to the ongoing and unprecedented drought, conservation by our customers, and new State rules, we are now using about 4,000 AFY. As a Public Utility, the fixed expenses of the MWD do not change much, and if anything, they increase annually as do most expenses we face as homeowners. Our expenses for just over half as much water are about the same as they were for twice as much. Further, wages, energy, water, and chemical costs keep going up.

The high water use in 2006-07 was not sustainable, so in 2007 the MWD Board adopted a tiered rate structure. The cost for using more water increased. When the drought continued in 2011, customer water consumption increased again to unsustainable levels, and with water supplies becoming more scarce, the board adopted allocations to help enforce conservation. Even though this was painful for some of our customers, it worked and continues to work today. But we had less money to pay bills, since most of our revenues are derived from water sales.

To correct the significant drop in revenues, the board in 2015 adopted a water shortage emergency surcharge. Unfortunately, it is still in effect. The District is working on a new rate study, but whatever it’s called, more money is needed to pay the bills since customers are using less water.

The three MWD Board candidates are personally nice people. But they were selected to run as a slate by a small group calling itself the Committee for Montecito Water Security (Committee) with a campaign fund of about $90,000. Eleven individuals account for almost $70,000 of this. That means they can spend almost $13 a person to try to persuade the 7,000 MWD voters to put them in office.

Their platform naively proposes the development of expensive desalinated and recycled wastewater with questionable return benefits, and your water bill will go down. With my 12 years of experience on the board, I understand the water supply and cost problems better than those three. If I am retained as a director of your Water District, your water bill will have a much better chance of not being as high as the new MWD Board would make it.

The tony twosome, who have given more than $6.2 million to the State Street institution over the years, join an esteemed list of $5-million-plus gift givers, including Jon and Lillian Lovelace, Debbie and Michael Nesbit, Sara Miller McCune, Michael and Anne Towbes, and the City of Santa Barbara.

Stepping Closer

I

would like to thank Dr. Edo McGowan for clarifying his position on recycled water with the residents of Montecito (“Water Warnings,” MJ #24/37). As quoted last year, he supports recycled water “as long as it’s done properly” (“It’s Where the Future Lies...” by Melinda Burns, Edhat and Independent, June 8, 2017).

His words of caution in last week’s MJ, however, must also be heeded.

We cannot ignore fundamental public health and safety in treating recycled water. For that reason, California has several laws and regulatory bodies, including the Regional Water Quality Control Board, in place to permit, regulate, and monitor recycled water operations and quality.

Goleta, Oxnard, Ventura, Camarillo, and parts of the City of Santa Barbara use recycled water for irrigation on agriculture, parks, golf courses, and schools. Many communities throughout California, the nation, and the globe rely on recycled water for irrigation and drinking. The widespread and safe use of recycled water for irrigation has been in existence for decades.

Montecito does not need to reinvent the wheel to pursue a state-of-the-art recycled water system for irrigation at the cemetery, parks, and golf courses that meets all public health and safety requirements and contains adequately trained personnel with appropriate water quality testing.

Our neighbors have been recycling water for decades, and we can work with them to share their wealth of knowledge. We just need to start the process of building on this vast reservoir of experience and expertise across California to develop a proper recycling program. I am hopeful that Dr. McGowan would use his considerable public health expertise to join the Montecito Water and Sanitary districts in the pursuit of large-scale recycled water for irrigation, so that we may step closer to attaining water security and stop dumping 500,000 gallons a day of water into the ocean off Butterfly Beach. We must not let fear drive our decisions to move forward with sustainable, resilient, and environmentally sound infrastructure.

Dr. Ishkanian’s experience and over 12 years of hands-on dedicated service even during floods and severe drought is invaluable. She is also actively involved in the water recycling project. All aspects of her management skills seem to work harmoniously. For continued success, let us not interfere with her excellent work; if it is not broke, don’t try to fix it.

I was shocked to learn about the list of Water and Sanitation District problems that threaten Montecito’s water supply. From the near total dependence on rainfall during this seemingly never-ending drought and in the face of climate change to the wasteful dumping of 500,000 gallons a day of water into the

ocean off of Butterfly Beach, to comparing the use of recycled water to spraying our community with Agent Orange, the list of inexcusable inaction on the part of the appointed incumbents is long.

Their dysfunction in failing to plan for Montecito’s water future raises the costs of water and lowers property values for every homeowner and rate payer in Montecito. It was not that long ago that we were paying penalties just to keep our landscaping and fruit trees barely alive. The incumbents had their chances. They did not deliver.

Thank you, Water Security Team (Coates, Hayman, Goebel, Newquist, and Barrett), for stepping up and giving the voters a choice for much needed change. You have my vote!

Manset Morreale’s pen name is Catharine Riggs. Manset Morreale has called Montecito and Santa Barbara home for most of her life – having grown up here as a part of a large tennis family. ob and Ellie Patterson, owners of Here’s the Scoop on Coast Village Road, announced publicly this week that they are actively seeking new owners for their beloved gelato and sorbet shop. “This is a bittersweet decision for us,” Ellie said, “As we have never felt more connected to the community than we do right now.”

The Pattersons have owned the shop for more than 14 years, originally opening in a different space at 1187 Coast Village Road in April 2004.

The couple, who found themselves looking for a new chapter after the economic downturn impacted their high-tech careers, learned the art of making gelato and sorbet at domestic trade shows, followed by a long course in Milan. The Pattersons set out to open a shop dedicated to an excellent product, supportive of local produce purveyors and farmers. “We were doing the ‘farm-to-table’ thing before it was trendy!” Ellie laughed.

The couple produces a variety of staple flavors, along with an array of seasonal offerings. They also make custom flavors for weddings and events, and are invited annually to participate in local school carnivals at Montecito Union School and Crane, at Earth Day, and at various other community happenings.

Business has steadily increased over the years, and Bob and Ellie have become even more entrenched in the community, a notion that Ellie says is her proudest accomplishment.

She recounts watching hundreds of local kids grow up over the years, including her own employees, three of whom have been married with Ellie and Bob in attendance. The sense of community deepened earlier this year, when Coast Village Road was shut down for more than two weeks following the January 9 debris flow.

Here’s the Scoop was the first food establishment to reopen and helped welcome back residents when evacuations were lifted.

The shop was recognized by country music star Brad Paisley, a longtime customer who made mention of it on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show when discussing the impact of the mudslide on Montecito. Months later, Paisley encouraged his fans to meet him at Here’s the Scoop the weekend of his benefit concert, bringing more attention to the business and Coast Village Road. “It was really incredible,

The Pattersons say their ideal buyer is someone who wants to become entrenched in the community, and carry on the traditions of the shop, including the costume contest the Pattersons host each year on Halloween, and the wall of kids’ pictures. The shop is equipped and health department-approved for the in-house production of the gelato and sorbet; the sale of the business includes the equipment, as well as hands-on training from Bob and Ellie to learn how to perfect the product. The Pattersons surmise that new restaurants in the building – Renaud’s, Kao Khang, and Ca’ Dario – as well as the opening of the Miramar in January, will only serve to boost business. Ellie and Bob say the decision to sell is based on one thing: wanting to spend more time with their grandsons, Jack (3) and Finn (1). “We are missing out on too much and we need to be there,” Ellie says. The couple plans on moving to Ohio to be closer to the kids as well as their only daughter, Alex. “It’s just time,” Ellie said.

he Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC) got underway with their 14th Annual Charity Regatta benefiting Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care (VNHC) and celebrating our dedicated teachers. They were recognized for going 110 percent above and beyond the call of duty during the Thomas Fire and mudslides to continue their student’s education. They arranged alternate classroom sites, revised lesson plans, and supported children mentally and emotionally during this traumatic time for all of us.

These teachers include Christine Gilbert, Nichole Hughes, Krista Munizich, Gretchen Tofflemire, Debra Tursick, Omar Espinoza, Patrice Warwick, Amy Campbell, Johanna Thorpe, Jacki Hammer, Vicky Harbison, Valerie Yoshimura, Mary Beth Lee, and Jocelyn Tipple.

The SBYC was founded in 1872 and is the second oldest yacht club on the West Coast of North America. I asked SBYC Staff commodore Francie Lufkin if she had ordered up the cruise ship that was anchored just off shore to add more atmosphere to the celebration. Of course, she replied, “Yes. No problem.”

The Club was festive with steel drum music playing while guests drank sparkling wine and mimosas to go along with the brunch buffet. There were piles of savory and sweet pastries, gourmet deviled eggs, and several kinds of miniature quiche. Yum! The tables were centered with small black boards and an honored teach-

Commodore John Koontz reminded the group, “VNHC also went 110 percent above their duty and continued its compassionate and trusted care for the community.” VNHC president/CEO is Lynda Tanner with Rick Keith as executive director. The Yacht Club has raised $1.3 million for VNHC in the 14 years of the Regatta.

These contributions help take care of 12,000 patients and families each year.

After the opening ceremonies, participants headed out to their respective spectator boats, which headed out to sea so they could watch the races.

Microbubbling

Here’s to You, Mrs. Robinson

I

want to say one word to you.

Just one word. Are you listening, Benjamin Braddock?

“Microbubbles.” Think about it.

I want to remake The Graduate. I know that sounds sacrosanct unless, of course, you’ve seriously never heard of the movie due to generational discrepancies or have a lack of cultural references. But I think it’s a fine idea to remake the Dustin Hoffman/Anne Bancroft classic. It was directed by the hugely talented director, the late Mike Nichols. He was smart enough to hijack Simon and Garfunkel’s song and change Mrs. Roosevelt to Mrs. Robinson for the film’s theme. It was all about generational change, which is a pretty good way to describe what we are all going through now.

As much as I’d like to think otherwise, I’m part of the generation being changed. I’m pretty sure this happens time and again throughout history with all the accompanying resentments handed not so gently from one “age group,” as they used to say in school, to the next. The generational change today turns the 1967 Oscarwinning movie on its head. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Hoffman’s Benjamin was a mild-mannered rebel who spent most of the movie suffering with his wealthy family and trying to get the guts to take the next step in his life.

Today he comes across as a bit of a creep, living with so many options in life he can’t quite appreciate. Does Benjamin turn into one of those privileged powerful men we know about publicly – avaricious, insensitive, brutal, and yet desperate and boring?

Is he one of those guys befuddled by the #metoo movement or worse, as the behavior that had seemed – at least to his male peers – acceptable becomes not so?

“Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming without shorts,” Warren Buffett famously said, more literally in this case than he intended.

These are turbulent times for cultural tides, with eddies and whirlpools galore. Even quicksand. Surprisingly, when you watch the movie today you find yourself cheering for Anne Bancroft’s pivotal character, Mrs. Robinson, who we all thought was a villain and now comes across as a manipulative, emotionally shattered, yet intelligent woman who wants to 20 – 27 September 2018

believe she still matters.

A new version tailored to life today would help sort through our confusing times. There’s a Zen quote about confusion: “If you are confused, that means you are about to learn something.” It’s not Mike Nichols’s fault that we turned out the way we did and made his movie an artifact of cultural change.

A similar thing happened with Truffaut’s Jules and Jim, another classic from the ‘60s. My friend and filmmaker Ruth Charney recently staged a screening with director Larry Kramer, hoping to introduce a younger audience to the French film classic. When the movie was over, they were disappointed to find that the audience didn’t understand why everyone in the film was so neurotic.

Actress Melissa Errico, famous for playing ingénues, has written eloquently about playing Daisy Gamble in On a Clear Day or Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and goes on about Kiss Me, Kate, the musical update of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew (that is now out-of-date) where the baritone gives a spanking to the female lead, crystalizing the iconic poster image for the show. She deals with these characters by playing against the victim profiling and finds untapped resources in the playwright’s own words to support her characters and find the thing we all want in characters of every gender: complexity.

We look at characters differently in every age. I once did a study of the classic Winnie the Pooh characters for a Disney series I created, Book of Pooh, and discovered Eeyore of all people – er, donkeys – began as a worrier in the ‘60s, became a nihilist in the ‘70s, and today seems like a realist.

The quickie solution – which turns out some interesting results – is to flip genders. But gender-flipping, as satisfying as it is to some and fun as it may be, doesn’t address the real issue. Male complexity is getting a beating these days. One of the most compelling #metoo movies you could make right now would be about the guy.

Think back to The Graduate. Genderflipping their roles is fraught with even more disturbing ripples. At some point, you have to start fresh.

Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson, I’m sure you would have an interesting take on what’s happening now. •MJ

Correct and Proper?

I

n his recent letter to the editor, long-serving Montecito Water Board Member Dick Shaikewitz said: “So far, everything the [Water] District has done has been correct and proper.” (“On Recycling Wastewater,” MJ #24/37) We disagree.

Let’s review what the water board has actually done during his tenure: • Implemented water rationing.

• Set excessive penalty rates.

• Threatened service cut offs.

• Forced customers through an onerous appeal process to get relief from high bills caused by leaks and other inadvertent use.

Indeed, Mr. Shaikewitz’s signature achievement while serving on the board for the past 12 years was to create an emergency, through years of inaction, that culminated in quotas and penalties.

Where else has Mr. Shaikewitz’s inaction been costly for District customers?

During his tenure, he has: • Ignored the advice of geologist Steve Bachman in 2007 to develop storage projects.

• Failed to file the State-mandated Urban Water Management plan in 2010 and 2015.

• Been unable to reach an agreement with the City of Santa Barbara on a desalination project.

• Driven residents to spend tens of thousands of dollars or more on storage tanks and well drilling in the face of quotas and uncertain water supply.

• Failed to cooperate with Montecito Sanitary District on a recycled water plan.

With regard to recycling, Mr. Shaikewitz now claims that “times have changed.” But given that we are in the eighth year of drought, the only thing that has changed recently is that he must now defend his record of inaction before the voters. This is why, despite previously comparing using recycled water for landscaping to spraying our beautiful communities with agent orange, Mr. Shaikewitz now says he is waiting for a recycling recommendation from outside consultants. But we have all been waiting for Mr. Shaikewitz to lead on this issue for the previous 12 years.

This is not misinformation or special interests at work; these are facts that every resident of Montecito and Summerland should find appalling.

Rather than try to defend his dismal record, Mr. Shaikewitz and others have fabricated stories about our platform: that we are pursuing cityhood and privatization. We trust that members of the community will not be so easily fooled by these lies. We are not pursuing either of these objectives.

As the last architect of penalties and quotas remaining on the board, Mr. Shaikewitz seeks to justify his re-election bid because his “years of MWD Board experience are needed to point out problems and solutions.” As his comments regarding agent orange make abundantly clear, Mr. Shaikewitz has excelled at looking for problems. But with his legacy of penalties and quotas, Mr. Shaikewitz has failed miserably at finding solutions. All the other board members who served with Mr. Shaikewitz during the era of inaction were voted out or had the good sense to resign or retire.

It is correct and proper for the voters to retire Mr. Shaikewitz on November 6 and bring in a fresh team of problem solvers capable of bringing water security to Montecito and Summerland. We are that team.

My first reaction on Saturday [September 8], after the historic upset of 37-year-old Serena Williams by 20-year-old Naomi Osaka, and witnessing the childishness of Williams, and the churlishness of the United States Tennis Association officials toward their own U.S. Open Women’s Singles champion was: This isn’t right.

A (young) woman of color (Japanese/Haitian ancestry) beats a veteran tennis woman of color (African-American). An outsider who doesn’t deserve to be in the same venue with the iconic insider bested the latter only because she was enabled by a racist and sexist umpire in the process.

Of course, the blunt assault of racism and sexism doesn’t work well in this situation. Both players are women of color. Ah, but the chair was officiated by a Portuguese male, known for being a hard-ass and going by the book. Supposedly, this guy was ruling in behalf of a white male North American-European tennis patriarchy. There are oppressors and those oppressed everywhere.

In the face of sheer dominance on court, the crowd jeers and boos the name of the young woman who dares to defeat their icon and deprive them of their sense of achievement and elation. Most of the crowd had not come to witness a competitive match, but a coronation. Most had come to witness, so to speak, Apollo Creed put on a clinic for the benefit of Rocky Balboa.

Instead, Rocky thinks it’s “a damned fight” (as Creed’s handlers said in the classic film).

It wasn’t only Serena Williams who was robbed of a major victory.

The crowd reacted as if the audacity of Osaka’s superior performance plunged a dagger into the heart of their settled, comfortable life. First, Trump defeating Hillary. Now, an unknown outsider taking apart the beloved tennis mama.

Elitism is becoming a contagious sickness across Western cultures. We are breeding an insulated class of

Paying Your Way

Passing a neighboring mobile home park, I see friend Marcia on her front porch. Her little dog, Beau, starts barking when he hears me. Beau contentedly sits on my lap while we visit on the porch. Marcia has two teenaged girls and a 62-year-old husband. Girls are in school, husband works, and Marcia is a stay-at-home mom with a couple entrepreneurial ventures. They own a newer mobile home worth about $300,000.

Simply curious, I ask, “What’s your health insurance situation?” “None, we stay healthy. If we need a doctor, we go to the med center.”

I was a bit shocked and asked what would happen if someone had an accident or got really sick. She acknowledged that possibility and said they’d probably go bankrupt. I said it’s one thing to have no assets and no insurance, but if you have assets, you are exposed to collections.

Moreover, I said society at large is made responsible if they are unable to provide for themselves. I said I don’t agree that should be the case, but it is. I asked how she would feel if her neighbors were reckless and irresponsible and got sick or injured as a result, and then demanded that she cover their expenses? I said this is exactly what is happening when people don’t buy insurance or otherwise cover their misfortunes: the state demands that someone else pay, including future generations.

Mind you, this is a friendly conversation between friends.

She said she never thought of it that way. She asked what she could do anyway? True enough, there isn’t anything we can do about the policies, but to every extent possible, it would be wise to protect your assets. Her

I

learned that poem from my father, who knew many similarly questionable classics. (Another was “It wasn’t the cough that carried him off – But the coffin they carried him off in.”)

However, I must admit that I emended that first verse. The original said, “the lamented,” not “the demented,” and it began, “There was a young woman of Rhyde.” I had to make her old and crazy to fit with “demented.”

And that is the major point of this essay: it is no longer socially, or medically, correct to call people crazy, even if they obviously are. The approved term today is “demented,” and the condition is no longer madness or insanity – it is “dementia.”

It comes in kinds and degrees. It receives all sorts of pills, and other treatments. You can go out of your mind at any age, but the longer you live, the better your chances are of doing so. This, of course, is one of the penalties of longevity. And taking this idea to its logical conclusion, one shudders even to speculate as to the mental condition of those who achieve immortality.

I am reminded of a successful 1980 South African Film called The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the standard of sanity is taken to be that of a tribe of Kalahari Bushmen who have had no contact with civilization as we know it. One day, they are confronted by a mysterious object that has fallen out of the sky. To them, it is a message from the Gods. To us, it is an empty Coke bottle. This object eventually causes so much dissention and consternation in the tribe that one Bushman is assigned the job of returning it to the Gods by throwing it off a great precipice which they know as “The Edge of the World.”

This calls to mind another movie, a more recent American production, called Thelma and Louise, at the climax of which the two heroines do the same thing to solve their own problems – only in this case, what they throw off a precipice – into the Grand Canyon – is themselves, driving over it in a car – a very un-American deed. Americans are traditionally an optimistic people.

However, from an international perspective, it is the nation of Hungary that has long been known to have, proportionally, more suicides than any other country in Europe. Yet, it was the Hungarians who gave us such world-renowned medical men as Ignaz Semmelweis (a pioneer of sanitation whose ideas were however rejected by his colleagues, leading to his death in a madhouse); Hans Selye, whose reputation ironically rests on his studies of stress, which must be a leading cause of suicide; and Max Nordau, whose own claim to fame stems significantly from his work on the phenomenon of “DEGENERACY.” (Incidentally, among Nordau’s other crazy ideas, was his belief, half a century before it actually happened, that there could one day be a Jewish State.)

But if we must associate suicide with insanity, look what has happened to religion. It used to be okay to die for your beliefs – that was crazy enough. But now it hardly counts, unless you take as many other people as possible with you, preferably innocent people whom you don’t know, and who have nothing whatever to do with your particular issue.

What’s really insane is that we no longer even call such conduct crazy. It has become a new normal. We dare not stigmatize suicide bombers as lunatics – the worst we can say about them is that they are “fanatics” or misguided religious zealots. They have their own rationale for mass murder, and who is to say that blowing yourself up on behalf of a cause you really believe in is not as logical as getting yourself marked for life with tattoos, or jumping out of airplanes for fun, or listening to amplified music until you go deaf?

If I had a case, this might be a good point at which to rest it.

Mud in Your Eye

H

ello, from Judith Ishkanian. Surely nobody expected Mother Nature to inundate Montecito with mud and debris nine months ago. But she did, and it has been a remarkable experience for Montecito residents ever since. According to the Sanitary District records, 10 percent of our population is off-line, whether because of total ruin, major repairs, disruption of business, or out of the area.

Despite the tragic aspect of the months passed, perhaps we will remember, as well, a community united around a neighborly spirit, the volunteerism, and the heroic rescues.

I do advocate that this unity of spirit continues through the next year, because anyone acquainted with the predictions of Emergency Services knows Montecito is not out of danger yet. Certainly, the Sanitary District is preparing for a return performance by Mother Nature. If, indeed, our seven-year drought ends this rainy season, we have no excuse to be surprised a second time. One of our clever crew has invented a device to block mud from inundating our manholes ever again. Our plant operators gave new meaning of innovation as they coped with the emergency.

Some people agree with the political dictum, “A crisis is a terrible thing to waste.” I do fear this attitude is at work in our community in conflict with ongoing recovery efforts. Well-meaning though the persistent big thinkers may be, I do fear the unnecessary divisiveness caused by the introduction of controversial proposals. Yes, I am referring to Cityhood, Consolidation of Special Districts, and Private Investment in Public infrastructure.

What’s the rush? Can it not wait until next spring? Apparently not. No sooner were the perfunctory “thoughts and prayers” uttered than the drumbeat for the “big three ideas” – all connected – ensue. Two months ago, I spoke during a Montecito Association meeting at the Public Comment opportunity and addressed this very thing. Most of the audience clapped vigorously after my three minutes were done. I had my say.

Now, I am willing to fight for my Sanitary Board director seat that I was privileged to occupy for the last 12 years unopposed. I know that we need stability and continuity for the next couple of years. When the new water district Board of Directors takes the oath of office, is seated, and adjusts to the vast challenges the Water District faces, it may favor a different set of priorities than it does now. Yes, by the way, the “Campaign” owns the Water District now because two Incumbents stepped down. (The remaining incumbent would be a source for knowledge, if elected.)

The Sanitary District needs to maintain its stability in the challenging environment we face as the community is being pushed to plan for its future before it has been made whole. Ten percent of our community may miss out on decisions it, as the injured party, is most urgently needed in the discussion.

Panic and rush are signs of agenda-driven crisis management. We do not have to fall prey to it. Cityhood, with its dangerous pitfalls, needs sober consideration. Question: Do we really want to lose our coveted “semi-rural designation” that we have in the County, in favor of the inevitable “urban designation”? The “urban designation” is favored by developers, high-density housing advocates, and social visionaries. It invites eligibility for Federal Housing and Community Development (HUD) Grants. They would be buttressed by Statemandated legislation for their programs.

We would not be able to “do what we want,” as State and Federal mandates would rain upon a new city. Revenue Neutrality is a term citizens will come to regret knowing.

I have said how I feel about the ideas of these well-meaning visionaries. I will be forced, along with others to advocate for our Montecito to remain a semi-rural community under the protection of the County unencumbered by the debt burden of cityhood, consolidation, and privatization of public utilities.

I will continue to advocate for time to heal before inviting the growth campaign into our midst.

The stability of Montecito Independent Special Districts is the key to recovery. This is the key to true independence. If you agree, vote for me, Judith Ishkanian and our other incumbent, director Bob Williams, on November 6. Thank you.

It’s a wholly unfair, redistributive scheme, popular with beneficiaries, but burdensome for everyone else.

How should it be, then, she asked, in your libertarian fantasy land?

Very simple, we each fully pay our own way through this life. We practice thrift, industry, savings, and investment.

We insure ourselves against misfortune.

If for any reason we fail, we must then be at the mercy of our family, friends, and society at large. Not because they are forced to help us, but because they desire to help us. Voluntary giving and nothing more. If that fails, we will be forced to admit our concern is false and hypocritical, and that we only care about others to the point we can force someone else to care for them.

I can hear the disparaging remarks now, but remember, before you insist that welfare, education, and the like, should be society’s problem, you are allowing the state to forcefully take away your and other people’s property. A violation of the very protections we rightfully expect the law and the state to provide. Remember too, the state will keep a large portion of this plunder for itself and inevitably everyone will be taking far more money out than anyone can ever replace.

Or, as Frederic Bastiat has stated: “The state is the great fiction by which everyone endeavors to live at the expense of everyone else. How can we identify and stop plunder?” he continues. “Quite simply,” he concludes.

“See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay, for it is not only an evil itself, but also it is a fertile source for further evils because it invites reprisals. If such a law – which may be an isolated case – is not abolished immediately, it will spread, multiply, and develop into a system.”

5G is Coming

Did you know 5G is coming to Santa Barbara? Barring normal repairs, you’ve run into torn-up and blockedoff streets across town in preparation for its arrival. Now in Beta testing across the state and the country, 5G aims to be fully installed between late 2018 through 2020. Plans exist to deploy it around the world by 2025, even to the most remote regions on earth.

October is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. – Mark Twin

5G is the “Fifth Generation” of wireless technology. It transmits extremely fast, short, millimeter-length radio frequencies in the Gigahertz bandwidth. We are currently in 4G, which transmits longer, fast microwaves in the Megahertz bandwidth, allowing distant cell towers and fixed antennae to transmit to our devices.

5G promises to deliver blisteringly fast download speeds, usher in no dropped calls, with strong, reliable signals no matter where we are or how many of us are using our devices at the same time. It will connect each one of us to the Internet of Things (IoT), and will bring us Artificial Intelligence (AI), more human-like robots, self driving cars, and Smart Homes and Cities, for starters. The 5G compatible mobile stations (mobile devices), portable stations (desktop computers, routers), and appliances are currently underway. We all will be connected from the ground to the sky and back again to a central data/ information receiving and transmitting center.

Because 5G’s waves are shorter than an inch, they don’t travel very far.

Faster, shorter frequencies carry enormous amounts of data, but because they don’t travel, they need continuous boosting to reach us. Industry’s mega answer is to install in every city, neighborhood and rural area countrywide, close-up mini cell towers every 10 to 12 buildings, or every 1,000 feet.

In Santa Barbara proper, that translates to several hundreds of mini cell towers all over town and many hundreds more in our neighborhoods. If your office or home happens to land at the 10-12 building mark, or at the 1000 foot mark, a cell tower will be installed there. The FCC has effectively stripped municipalities of their right to choose tower locations.

Each tower will be carrying about one hundred ports and approximately one thousand tiny, “phased array” antennae. Phased Array antennae accelerate the waves into concentrated, narrow, steerable, high power beams to penetrate walls providing us with high-speed, efficient cell service, 24/7, indoors and outdoors. These antennae track each other so wherever you are, a beam from your smartphone will be aimed directly at a cell tower and a beam from the tower will be aimed directly at you.

Santa Barbara is now placing the necessary transformer boxes, heaters, fans, and cable under the streets.

The mini cell towers on the ground are being installed as new, fake lamp posts, or on existing lamp posts. The dummy posts look exactly like our normal street lights, except where the light would normally be, there is instead a solid canister, which houses the towers and antennae. These ground-level installations are only a portion of what is planned for 5G. Low-orbit satellites are now being launched into our skies by SpaceX, Boeing, and World View to name a few, with many thousands more on contract. SpaceX alone plans to deploy 12,000. As many as 20,000 satellites are currently applied for. Each satellite will have thousands of millimeter-sized antennae in a phased array, all working together to send narrow beams of energy to Earth all over the planet. Each beam from each satellite will have an effective radiated power of up to 5 million watts. This massive fleet will occupy our ionosphere over the entire globe.

Why does 5G need satellites? These satellites will transmit the IoT to each of us and to every person on Earth.

Over 1 trillion things will be active on 5G, let alone the millions of cell phones that will use it. It will also provide cell service to the underserved.

These same satellites will simultaneously receive detailed information from each one of us just as the mini cell towers on the ground will do, along with all our devices. It is called Multiple Input-Multiple Output.

I don’t know anyone yet who can’t wait for their bed (which will know when you rise and apparently a lot of other things), to tell the coffeepot to make the brew so you can awaken to its fresh aroma.

Industry scientists say there will be no environmental or biological impact from 5G on any level, though as yet, none of the required impact studies have been done by the FCC. 20 – 27 September 2018

Independent scientists and physicians are strongly advising the FCC to do the required studies before they allow 5G to be fully deployed. The 5G beams have the potential to go through the body and will have an effective radiated power 10 times as high as that of 4G phones. These beams will overlap in a crowd.

It is not clear yet how the low orbit satellites will affect our delicate skies electromagnetically. With mounting correlation and evidence, there is growing, serious concern that for our ever-intensifying technological dependency, our demand for highspeed conveniences, and for the goals of the industrial complex, significant collateral damages, Earth-wide, will not only continue, but will unmistakably escalate.

are well-intended citizen-volunteers who have, in recent years, helped to make some progress. But these efforts have been slow, incremental, non-strategic, misguided and ineffective in many cases. These shortfalls, exhibited over a long period of time, have led to an unacceptable situation for the water and sanitary customers of Montecito and Summerland, especially as we head into the eighth year of an unprecedented drought and continue to see the appalling discharge of more than a half-million gallons of partially-treated wastewater into the Channel each day.

The familiar saying about getting the same old results by doing things the same old way is as apt for the peril threatening our community as the classic warning that nothing is as expensive as poor management.

With your support for this team in the coming election, creative approaches – undertaken by new players taking into account the best practices of other districts in California and elsewhere – will get the job done.

The five candidates of the Water Security Team are seeking our votes on the basis of their substantial track record of accomplishment in the business and non-profit sectors as well as their commitment to the initiatives that are going to get us out of the danger we now face. In his recent essay in the Montecito Journal, Ken Coates,

leader of the Water Security Team, summarized these initiatives well: diversification of our water supply through local, controllable solutions (such as completion of the inexplicably delayed desalination agreement with the City of Santa Barbara), creative recycling of treated wastewater, better management of our existing groundwater, and further conservation efforts. This is the right focus, and what is needed now is the communal will to transform these initiatives into realities through election of the right Board members.

As a couple, our support is for the entire Water Security Team because of its members’ abilities and the importance of bringing a critical mass of new talent to bear on the task at hand.

Emblematic of this group’s promise is the track record of its leader, Ken Coates. By coincidence, over the past twenty years we have been Ken’s near-neighbor in Michigan as well as Montecito. As a result we have seen his sterling performance in leadership roles at such wide-ranging organizations as the Ford Motor Company and the Duke Cancer Institute as well as this area’s Direct Relief International and Sansum Clinic. For the benefit of our community, we urge you to join us in supporting Ken and his four colleagues on the Water Security Team.

Countywide Committees

With diminished local water supplies, the MWD is heavily reliant on State and purchased water we receive from the Central Coast Water Authority (CCWA). As MWD’s representative, I became a director of CCWA. MWD holds 9.3 percent of CCWA’s voting power. Some of the other members are the City of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Goleta, and Santa Maria. CCWA now has a $70,000,000 yearly budget. These other Districts had elected me chair, and I currently serve as vice chair. If I am re-elected to the MWD Board, in January I will again be chair.

I also became MWD’s representative to the Santa Barbara County Special Districts Association (SBCSDA). Other member Special Districts including fire, water, sanitary, cemetery, vector, and airport elected me as vice president. His original flagship location, Ca’ Dario Ristorante on East Victoria Street, opened in 1997, after Furlati was involved in the opening of several Santa Barbara and Montecito restaurants, including serving as the executive chef at Pane e Vino in the upper village in the early 1990s. The nearby Ca’ Dario Pizzeria opened in 2014, offering a more casual atmosphere.

The Montecito location will offer a selection of menu items from both the original restaurant and the pizzeria, similar in style to the Goleta location.

Giovanni’s, which has been on Coast Village Road more than 30 years, decided not to renew their lease, which ends early next year. Furlati says he expects it will take several months for tenant improvements to be completed and hopes for a late spring opening. “It’s going to be great,” he said.

which comprises board members Bob Williams and Jeff Kerns. The committee met on September 14 to discuss concerns regarding information that has been in the press and in paid ads that make it appear that Montecito Sanitary District has not been treating wastewater properly.

At Monday’s board meeting, MSD staff provided information demonstrating the compliance record of the District in fully treating the community’s wastewater. MSD board members report that the wastewater treatment plant is fully functioning and meeting all requirements of the State Water Board issued NPDES permit.

Members of the community are invited to come and witness the treatment process and see the “before and after” of the treated water.

Interested individuals should call (805) 969-4200 to schedule a personalized tour of the wastewater treatment plant.

The board also heard a report regarding an arrangement for water reuse that is being successfully carried out in the Carmel area. Director Williams and general manager Diane Gabriel recently visited the treatment plant site of a water reuse project that is operated by the Carmel Area Wastewater District and funded by seven golf courses in the Pebble Beach area. The golf courses are irrigated solely with recycled water created through a treatment process similar to the pilot project that MSD is undertaking. Each 18-hole golf course in California uses an average of 200,000 gallons of water per day for irrigation. In Pebble Beach, the courses are required to use recycled water as mandated by the State and their local water agency. The golf courses are not allowed to use groundwater and drinking (potable) water to irrigate.

When asked by Director Kerns if such an arrangement could work in Montecito to serve the two private golf courses, Birnam Wood and the Valley Club, Gabriel stated that it could be a viable option for the community. MSD staff and board members Williams and Walter Owens will attend the Strategic Planning Committee meeting on Thursday, September 20, at the Montecito Water District, where the MWD will receive an update on the recycled water feasibility study, which looked at 27 different options for the reuse of wastewater in the community.

Following the singing of “God Bless America” by mudslide survivor Lauren Cantin, Montecito Fire chief Chip Hickman shared his thoughts about the recent disasters, saying that he has never been more proud of the Montecito Fire Department and nearby agencies. “Without the heroic actions of our first responders, the impacts could have been much worse,” he said.

Speakers included Bucket Brigade founder Abe Powell and local celebrity Oprah Winfrey, who both expressed their gratitude to first responders as well as “second responders” – those who helped and continue to help mudslide victims. Special guests included local fire chiefs and members of the Sheriff’s Department, as well as additional emergency responders.

Let’s Hear it for the Boys Former world champion surfer Shaun Tomson is raising money for young, fatherless boys.

For the fifth year, the Montecito resident is surfing in the 9th annual 100 Wave Challenge at Mission Beach, San Diego, on Sunday, October 7.

Along with 200 other wave watchers, Shaun will be catching 100 waves to help provide in-school tutelage for more than 800 fatherless teenage boys under the Boys to Men Mentoring Network.

Last year, Shaun, 63, raised $24,050 and this year is hoping to collect $33,000.

As he says: “Stay stoked.”

Care and Share Alike There were decidedly shady things going on at the Biltmore when Angels Foster Care held its annual al fresco lunch on the impeccably manicured lawn with 200 guests, raising around $100,000 for the 12-year-old charity founded by Michelle Arntz.

Despite taking place five months

later than usual because of the New Year disasters, the sun shone brightly and temperatures were in the 80s, necessitating the need for a tsunami of extra umbrellas to protect diners, not to mention the desserts.

Michelle, who has just made way for Holly Carmody, was honored with the leadership award presented

by Peggy Hodson, Michele White, Marsha Kotlyar, and David and Shannon Neels, while the community heroes award went to representatives of law enforcement, firefighters, health care professionals, paramedics, and military personnel.

Radio host Catherine Remak conducted the paddle raise, while board chair Megan Orloff emceed and presented an award.

Since the charity was founded, 245 children have been fostered, including 31 this year.

Among the supporters trying to keep their cool were Monica Babich, Holly Murphy, Mindy Denson, Ivana Firestone, Karen Earp, and Gina Blankenship.

On the Table Foodies were out in force at The Lark in the Funk Zone when the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County hosted a reception to commemorate its 7th annual Table of Life fundraiser October 6 at the beautiful Montecito estate of Jim and Stephanie Sokolove, who are leaving our rarefied enclave for the balmier attractions of Boca Raton, Florida, in December.

MTF Annual Barbecue

Montecito Trails Foundation will host its annual barbecue on Sunday, September 30, at Crane Country Day School. “It’s less of a fundraiser this year, and more of a thank you!” said Ashlee Mayfield, MTF board member. The Foundation has been hard at work restoring the Montecito network of trails since the Thomas Fire and debris flow; the barbecue is an opportunity to thank MTF supporters and trail enthusiasts.

In lieu of the usual silent auction, the barbecue will be a community celebration with a raffle, delicious food, and an emphasis on the trails. “We really wanted to engage the kids this year, so we are hosting a family friendly hike on Ennisbrook trail,” Mayfield said. Kids who participate will get their own raffle ticket to a special kids’ raffle. The hike begins at 10:30 am, with the barbecue starting at noon.

Lunch will be served by Los Padres Outfitters, and Steve Woods will provide live country music. Of course there will be the famous Margarita Bar; beer, wine, and soft drinks will also be available.

Maps.com has donated a large map that will outline the trail system along with denoting which trails are open and which are still damaged. “We are looking forward to communicating the progress of what we’ve done and

lan Kozlowski, the 1970s film arts prolific-tarian, celebrated his 70th on September 11 in righteous fashion, with both a photography exhibit titled “Finding the Moment” and a star-studded “who’s who” sipping wine and telling tales at the Santa Barbara Wine Collective in the Funk Zone. The exhibit featured 25 never-before-released images from his trove, which are digitally sepia-toned and hand-printed by him. Here we find candid portraits of Nora Jones, Ravi Shankar, Jeff Bridges, Leonard Cohen, and other famed musicians, and there were three large wood crates of matted black-and-white prints from his Buddhist travels to Tibet, Cambodia, Cuba, Spain, and India to choose from. No shame to fame, the “Koz” wearing his long-sleeve silk burgundy Nehru shirt with matching suede shoes and two prayer scarves, he affectionately held court talking with his friends and fans, with daughter Lily by his side.

Blushing like a kid of seven with his trusty Leica camera in hand, Kozlowski took a photo here and there of the three-hour live music concert in his honor by musicians, most of whom he photographed. The gig started with a melodic set by Laurence Juber, the English-born guitarist of Paul McCartney’s Wings band.

Setting the pace upward was the Jeff Bridges & the Abider’s Band of Chris Pelonis on acoustic guitar and vocals, Bill Flores on pedal steel and lap steel guitar, Steve Postell on an electric guitar, Randy Tico on bass, and Tom Lackner on drums – minus Jeff, who was en route to the John Lennon Tour Bus with Yoko and Ringo in New York City to raise funds for music education and No Kid Hungry. Pelonis tore a new suede shoe with his blues original, “Stranger In My House.”

Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) did his top five songbook hits, with backup singer Kate. Phillips looked out and said, “Hey, who’s up next?” as Kenny Loggins was in the house. Switching places, Loggins plugged in his acoustic guitar, and

was joined with Maitland Ward on fender electric guitar, Jason Libs on harmonica and vocals, backed by Postell, Lackner, Flores, Tico, Pelonis, and Sven Holcomb.

Loggins quipped, “What a great idea for a band,” and ripped up the dance floor with hits “Footloose,” “Conviction of the Heart,” “Love the One You’re With,” some Motown covers and audience sing-a-longs.

Surprise shredding guitar solos by Postell, Ward, and Holcomb brought the gig to a fevered pitch. The band closed with Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and “The Birthday Song” by The Beatles.

he 7th Annual Montecito Motor Classic (MMC) rolls onto Coast Village Road this Sunday, September 23. The show opens promptly at 9 am with an eye-popping stroll of historic and super-cars that will stay on display until 3 pm.

Dolores Morelli Johnson, founder and chair of the Montecito Motor Classic, says, “This is one gorgeous car show. We have created a standard of expectation,” she boasts, that has attracted the attention and participation of Petersen Automotive Museum and other top collectors in the state.

“As the lead sponsor since its inception seven years ago,” Michael Hammer adds, “I am extremely grateful how the community, PAL, SBPF, the Dragg Program, merchants, and vendors have come together to help the children of our community. My wife, Misty, and I,” he adds, “have to give special thanks to the amazing leadership, and truly to all of our volunteers of the Montecito Motor Classic.”

1972 Porsche 911 RSR

Hammer has entered a 1972 Porsche 911 RSR in the Classic Car division. In 2001, this Porsche underwent a complete restoration, in which it was stripped to the bare chassis, and then carefully upgraded to RSR factory specifications.

This 911 now has a 3.6 liter RS motor with 247hp, which is plenty of solidly engineered German muscle. The 911 has participated in the 2016 CF 200 Santa Barbara Rally, 2017 Copperstate 1000, the 2017 Boys and Girls club Rally, and the 2018 Copperstate 1000.

1957 Porsche 356 Outlaw

Ol’ Yaller Mark IX

Ol’ Yaller Mark IX was built in 1963

by Max Balchowsky from scratch, after drawing up the plans on the floor Mark Alfano will showcase his 1957 Porsche 356 “Outlaw” in the 7th annual Montecito Motor Classic. The name of his car seems a perfect target for the event, which benefits the Police Activity League.

For those who love fast cars, Mark Alfano has one in the Classic division to admire: the 1957 Porsche 356 Outlaw.

Recently finishing The 1 Rally and being shown at 2018 Quail Motorsport Gathering is this 1957 Porsche 356 Outlaw.

The interior was restored by Harry Derohanessian using Euro Autolux leather with square weave and German carpets to keep as close to original as possible. This car being finished in Sterling Silver over red is true elegance; the car is not, however, just built for show – but mainly go!

To give it the get-up-and-go, the car was restored by Hot Rod and Hobbies in 2013. It was upgraded with drivetrain and rear suspension from a 1983 911 SC. The transaxle had to be redone, and the firewall had to be moved slightly and custom shrouds made to get the seal around the engine. The brakes are front disc from 1978 911 SC

It was fitted with a 401 Buick V-8 “Nailhead” engine producing 310 horsepower, enabling the car to reach 0-60 in under four seconds thanks to its low weight. Max famously bragged about spending only $1,456.72 on Ol’ Yaller II, a car in which he was able to outrace some of the best Ferraris.

Balchowsky built several cars known as “Ol’ Yaller,” a name derived from the junkyard dog in the 1957 Disney film Old Yeller. The car was restored, and under the ownership of Peter and Lynda Shea was raced extensively in historic competitions, including at the Monterey Historics.

Orwin Middleton remembers buying this car, a 1963 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso, in November 1986 for the same amount as a new Corvette.

Only 350 of this model were ever made between late 1962 and mid-1964 and the final model of the highly acclaimed 250GT series made between 1957 and 1964. The 250 GT Lusso and the iconic 250 GTO race car were the revisions following the 250GT SWB (Short Wheelbase Berlinetta) in its two forms of street car and race car versions.

“Growing up, I always considered the 12-cylinder Ferrari as the epitome of all things automotive in beauty, performance, and general provenance,” Orwin says. “I hardly saw one except in Road and Track magazine or during a trip to places like Beverly Hills or Bel Air. Owning and driving a car like this are what dreams are made of to a car junkie like myself, and having it sitting in my garage is a total treat.”

The General

“The General” has a fantastic place in history. It was one of 11 “Command Cars” modified for General Patton.

Built by Chrysler in 1942, it was shipped for use in his North African campaign. “The General” is much larger and heavier than a jeep and has a gross weight of 7,475 pounds.

After WWII, it was purchased from Army surplus by an Idaho farming family who converted it to a farm flatbed truck. Later the family was contacted by restorers, who found the original back-end of the vehicle in the family barn. Rusted out, the components were shipped by rail to the West Coast for restoration and remounted on the original car. Because of its rarity, it took seven years to collect missing parts found in military shows and outings across the country.

“The General” is believed to have been for Patton’s personal use and was mounted with a 30-caliber machine gun on the “shotgun” side of the front seat. That is where Patton normally sat as he preferred to actively stand on the floor of the front seat, hands on the windscreen and highly visible by the troops. It was also military-parade equipped with siren, red light, flags, and the stars of his rank. Patton’s greatest moment was with the 3rd Army – thus the steel powder-coated flags on the hood commemorate that period of his successful leadership.

Pure Intent Workshop

Coming next weekend to Center of the Heart is a one-day workshop that attempts to answer the question, “What would my life look like if I could summon and receive everything I desire?” The problem, as posed, is that for many people the present moment is obscured by the fog of uncertainty – we don’t know what’s coming because we haven’t chosen and summoned what we truly desire. When that issue is compounded with the effect of our fears robbing our power and immobilizing our lives, it’s no wonder that we are afflicted by self-doubt and low self-esteem.

But according to the workshop,

Beach Boys Keep Putting out Good Vibrations

N

obody who lives and breathes and can hear music needs an introduction to the Beach Boys, the band of brothers and cousins that more or less put Southern California on the musical map with a surfeit of surf hits followed by pop songs and, later, Pet Sounds, perhaps the greatest pop album of all time.

Fifty-seven years after they formed, the Beach Boys are still going strong, albeit with lead singer Mike Love the only remaining original member.

We’ve seen them at the Santa Barbara Bowl, down at the Ventura County Fair, over at the Arlington, and – this Friday, September 21, at the Granada, the glitzy jewel of downtown.

Love, who lived on the Mesa for almost 20 years starting in the mid1970s, talked about the Beach Boys and the lifestyle over the phone from the road – where else would he be? – earlier this week.

Q. What is it that makes this tour different from all the rest, save for the special one that reunited you with Brian Wilson? Do they blur into each other over the years?

A. Not really, especially recently.

Last year, it was the Wild Honey anniversary, and we did 185 performances.

This year, we’re lazy bums, only doing 165. But no matter what, we continually upgrade and update the show.

We’re releasing a Christmas album, and it’s got a lot of my family on it.

My son Christian – who tours with us – sang on it, and three of my other kids, and they did an amazing job on those Christmas carols.

Speaking of Christian, how is it to have him in the band with you all year? I know him from volleyball at the beach.

It’s really great. He was with us for a while but then he decided he wanted to stay in town and play volleyball at East Beach. Now he still competes, but he’s been touring with us for years.

He sings lead on “God Only Knows” and gets a standing ovation almost every night. It always feels like my cousin Carl is with us when we do that song.

You guys have survived the death of both Dennis and Carl, and it seems like you’re just as strong as ever. Why do you think the Beach Boys have been so enduring?

Honestly, it’s back to the basics.

Granada hosts Mike Love and the Beach Boys on Friday, September 21

Steven Libowitz has reported on the arts and entertainment for more than 30 years; he has contributed to the Montecito Journal for more than 10 years.

We started as a family of singers. The Wilsons on my mom’s side were way into music. I grew up in a household where you couldn’t escape it if you wanted to. Brian and I would get together and sing Everly Brothers songs together. And that was the beginning of the basis of everything we do, which is the love of harmony.

It creates such a wonderful warm feeling, especially when you combine it with the songs that Brian and I wrote together. The subject matter, the beautiful chord progressions, and that harmony through it all.

We didn’t do it to be famous or rich – nobody paid us originally. We’d just be singing in the living room or the car or the locker room at school.

I believe it’s that love of harmonizing that transcends time and appeals to multiple generations. It’s the secret ingredient of Beach Boys music that has made it last for so long. I imagine 100 years from now, our songs will still be played. Some of them will always be part of our culture.

How does what you just said land on you – that songs you created will actually live on for centuries?

I don’t think about it when we’re doing it. But we’ve always tried to write lyrics that accentuate the positive. Even if something negative happens – like in “The Warmth of the Sun,” where someone you love doesn’t feel the same way – it’s a drag and a big disappointment. But at least you felt something, which was like

the warmth of the sun. I wrote those words to the haunting melody from Brian. Same with “In My Room” and “Surfer Girl,” but we also had the flatout fun songs, too. All of them strike a chord and people can relate on whatever level.

How about for you? How do you relate to these songs after more than half a century? What keeps you going?

When you’ve had a hand in creating the songs, and then get to re-create them night after night, what could be better? What keeps us on our toes is that the chord progressions and harmonies are complex, and you have to be engaged to do them. There is a real art to harmonizing together the way we do and you have to pay attention, which keeps it interesting artistically.

And emotionally it’s wonderful to see how the music you’ve done originally just as a family hobby continues to be enjoyed by people and makes them feel good. So, it’s really a blessing.

Earlier this month, the choreographer that did DANCEworks here in town used several snippets from “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” mashed up with other music as part of the soundtrack for a new piece he created. To me, it’s great that other creators realize the brilliance of some of your music, how much went into those songs.

Yeah, I remember we did 25 takes of just this one section on that song when we were recording it. I started calling Brian “The Stalin of the Studio” because he was really something.

Are you guys getting along okay these days?

Yeah. There’s been a lot of myth and inaccuracies and mischaracterizations over the years about the band, but I put a lot of those to rest in the book

owners Tim and Louise Casey and took pictures. But not being a good sailor, I confess, I got off. There was still the Beer Garden or volleyball games to play. You could also visit the Maritime Museum next door. Upon returning from the race, there were regatta awards, raffle winners, and the day ended with a barbecue. Almost 400 folks enjoyed the fun in the sun.

She has spent 25 years in board leadership and service positions and is the executive director of the Natalie Orfalea Foundation.

Montecito Bank & Trust for its community employees who volunteer 5,200 hours every year. The bank has donated $1 million annually to non-profit organizations. The Volunteer Award went to Organic Soup Kitchen, which among other programs, hand delivers nutrient-dense soups weekly to cancer patients undergoing treatment at Cottage Hospital and Ridley-Tree Cancer Center.

Beth Farnsworth and CJ Ward were the masters of ceremonies who joked when the room was noisy, “We work in a studio with no people.” HSB CEO David Selberg welcomed and noted that the group has reached new heights in the amount of people they help. They are also partnering with Neighborhood Clinics.

Sheriff Bill Brown thanked HSB for helping 900 people since our disaster, and they have counseled nine out of 13 families that lost loved ones. The keynote speaker was Jesse Brisendine, who began his talk by graphically describing an attempted teen suicide who tried to stab himself with a knife and then admitted it was he! Jesse pointed out, “Teen suicide is up and Hospice is needed more than ever.

There are all the school shootings, bullying, plus addiction to social media.”

Jesse told us that 17 percent of teens have considered suicide and it’s the second leading cause of their deaths.

Casa del Herrero gave a tea in the blue and white garden to say “thank you” to its big donors. As executive director Jessica Tade said to them, “We couldn’t do it without you.” The event could have been in another era when hats and gloves were de rigueur.

There was fine china, savory finger sandwiches, and trays full of sweets.

I’ve been a docent at the Casa for 18 years, and it still surprises me how many people in Santa Barbara have never heard of it. The Casa is one of our four local National Historic Landmarks, which include the Courthouse and the Mission. The Casa was a private home owned by

one family – the Steedmans – who built it in the early 1920s. What’s even better is they left all the furnishings when it became open to the public. It feels like a real home, not a museum.

We still have family members serving on the board.

It is an 11-acre estate with house and gardens that is still intact. Many of you have driven by without realizing what’s behind the gate and landscaping just a block from the Upper Village in Montecito at 1387 East Valley Road.

Board president Meghan Stoll reminded me, “The next big event is the annual Christmas party the first Saturday in December. The last two years it has sold out before the invitations were mailed.” The house looks especially festive with all the holiday decorations. Raise the Bar Following a brief revamp, the Montecito Inn space that was formerly home to Frankland’s Crab & Co., is now a design-cktail lounge, Chaplin’s Martini Bar. The new concept by chef-owners Phillip Franklin Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee, offers a speakeasy reminiscent of those that were fashionable when the upscale getaway on Coast Village Road was originally built.

“We were consistently told by locals that they missed the previous bar that once occupied the space,” says Phillip. “Therefore, I wanted to restore what many felt was absent, but with my spin. A place you’d want to get dressed up for, but where cocktails and conversation are ultimately your only focus.”

In addition to the libations, which are priced between $12 and $15, a limited selection of snacks are available each evening, including jumbo shrimp, steak tartare, and local oysters.

Hostelry co-owner Danny Copus collaborated in the design of the bar, which has wood-trimmed booths in tufted jet-black leather, ebony oak planking, and brown maple edges, with the room anchored by a coffee-colored oak bar.

Club Hub Montecito’s Rotary Club has been showing its largesse.

In partnership with the City College Foundation, the club has handed out ten $1,250 scholarships to high-performing City College students.

“For more than 25 years, the rotary club has provided scholarships for students in the vocational and career technical services at City College, with the total amount provided during this time exceeding $100,000,” says club treasurer John Glanville.

Ono? Oh, Yes Montecito actor Jeff Bridges, 68, has been busy in bed with John Lennon’s 85-year-old widow Yoko Ono and his wife of 40 years, Susan, didn’t mind a bit.

The Oscar winner joined former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, 78, and the Japanese singer recreating the bed-in inspired by Ono and Lennon’s famed Vietnam War protests in 1969, to support New York City public schools.

The tony triumvirate were joined on the steps of City Hall in Manhattan by the Big Apple’s mayor, Bill de Blasio.

The event was part of the 5th annual Come Together: NYC. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus rolled out in 1998 with the intention of continuing Lennon’s legacy of promoting unity through art, was also involved in the celebrations.

Lennon was famously murdered outside his home, The Dakota, near Central Park in 1980.

Mumm’s the Word A champagne bottle has been designed to enable wealthy tourists traveling to space to drink the bubbly in zero gravity.

Future space tourists will be able to enjoy their view of Earth from orbit with a high-tech bottle of Mumm champagne, says the company.

The unique bottle, a collaboration between the champagne house and designer Octave de Gaulle, a relative of the late French president, is being released this month under the name Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar.

It will be tested on a specially equipped Airbus A300 Zero-G plane – nicknamed the Vomit Comet – in Reims, the heart of France’s Champagne country, which creates 20-second bursts of weightlessness.

It is aimed at the forthcoming wave of suborbital and orbital space tourism promoted by private operators such as Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin.

I wrote last year, Good Vibrations: My Life as a Beach Boy. And at some point, there will be a documentary on my life and I’ll be able to accurately depict what was going on, so there’s no conjecture and falsehoods. But Brian chose to leave the touring band back in 1964, so the die was cast back then.

That’s when Glen Campbell was with us for six months until we got Bruce Johnston (who lives in Montecito).

So, we’ve gone our separate ways for decades.

Now that you mention it, I have to go back to touring. You mentioned you do more than 150 shows a year. Even bands in their 20s get tired of the road. How the heck do you handle it?

It’s the hardest part of what we do, but it’s about lifestyle choices. We don’t do anything to harm our voices.

And I’ve been doing transcedental meditation (TM) since I learned it from the Maharishi back in the 1970s.

He stayed at my old house on the Mesa one time back then too. It gives me the energy and clarity and positivity to keep going, and I put it to use in the performance. That’s been my secret. If I didn’t do it twice a day, I would not be able to do what I do.

Speaking of which, you put out a solo album last year, Unleash the Love, with references to TM. Do you get a chance to sing any of those in the concerts?

Yeah, we’re doing “Unleash the Love” and also “Getcha Back” on this tour. You’ll hear them at the Granada.

New Play for CartCarrying Members

Bill Waxman’s The Sorrow Cart was supposed to have its world premier last winter at the Center Stage Theatre.

But the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslide scuttled those plans, as actors had to evacuate their homes and Santa Barbara turned into a ghost town. By the time things cleared, some of the actors had moved on, and other issues arose, so the original musical had to wait nine months to make its debut.

But those troubles are nothing compared to those suffered by the subject of the work – America’s homeless population, which continues to soar amid tough economic times.

The original inspiration for creating the play grew out of Hurricane Katrina, explained Waxman, who lives in Simi Valley but has been associated with Santa Barbara’s DIJO Productions as an actor, director, and playwright. He helped displaced people from New Orleans get settled in California as a homeless liaison in the schools.

“That really opened my eyes about the issue,” he said. “And since then, it’s only become more of an epidemic.

There are over half a million homeless people in the U.S., nearly the population of North Dakota. I wanted to do something where I could make a difference, that would make people aware of the plight and difficulties through their eyes and words.”

So, Waxman wrote the The Sorrow Cart – the name comes from the shopping carts favored by many street people – including the book, music, and lyrics as a series of vignettes. each highlighting a different aspect of the plight of the homeless.

“I’d get an idea for a story that needed to be told, create the character, and then come up with a song,” he recalled, adding that it took about 18 months to complete the project.

“They’re a combination of stories ripped from headlines, plus things I observed myself and others from people I talked to. It all coalesced in my head to tell the whole story.”

Among the topics addressed are hunger (with the song “Cheesburger and Fries”), the “failure of society to acknowledge their existence” (“Don’t Notice”), and writing home to tell the parents this is where life has lead (“Dear Mom and Dad”).

A story about finding love on the streets came just as Waxman was finishing the script.

The conceit tying the stories together is that they’re being told as part of a TV news report about homeless roundups and other efforts to help them. “The play shows the dichotomy between the reporting on the situation and how it actually is,” Waxman said.

That’s where members of the cast come in, as Waxman has landed K-LITE radio personality Catherine Remak to join DIJO regular Ed Giron, an actor who is also the host of the radio show Community Matters on KZSB, as the reporters. Santa Barbara actors George Coe, Richard Lonsbury, Phil Moreno, Van Riker, and Waxman’s daughter, Alison, plus Heather Terbell, Claudia Kashin, and Audrey Brecher are among those portraying the homeless folks sharing their stories.

“It has not been an easy road [since the fire],” Waxman said. “But now, we have a group of actors who are committed and ready to grow with the show.”

Step one is on Friday, September 21, at 8 pm, when The Sorrow Cart premieres at the Center Stage Theater, when all proceeds from the show – tickets are $20 general, $15 students, $10 military – will benefit The Soldiers Project to assist in aiding homeless veterans. “I’m just mostly wanting to raise awareness,” Waxman said. “I hope this is as affecting and engaging as I intend it to be. Meaning, some face time with the intellectuals, a discussion or two that has meaning beyond the moment. Introducing Profs at the Pub, an engaging, free speaker series featuring UCSB professors at some of the Santa Barbara area’s favorite watering holes. His areas of specialization include American economic, social, and legal history as well as Southern history and the U.S. Civil War, and he wrote the book Modernizing a Slave Economy: The Economic Imagination of the Confederate Nation back in 2009. Storm Reading Returns – The pioneering theatrical production that featured a character who lives with a visible disability was created and debuted right here in Santa Barbara at the Lobero Theatre back in 1988. Now, 30 years later, the groundbreaking play presented by Access Theatre that went on to inspire audiences worldwide for nearly a decade is coming home and back to life to mark the major milestone.

Storm Reading’s central character is Neil Marcus, who portrayed himself during the play’s six-year run that spotlighted his relentless pursuit of living life in an artistic and poetic way. The production toured through 20 states as well as Canada and England, and was performed as part of the NBC TV special From the Heart at the Kennedy Center with Access Theatre honorary board member Michael Douglas. Back in the day, Maria Shriver interviewed Marcus on The Today Show, and Linda Wertheimer featured him on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered.

ational Review editor, Los Angeles Times columnist, speaker, Fox News commentator, author, and teacher (for nearly a year he taught English to Czech citizens after the breakup of the Soviet Union), Jonah Goldberg is a product of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Jonah’s father was Jewish; his mother Christian; Jonah was brought up Jewish. Some may remember his mother, Lucianne Goldberg, and her presence on newscasts in the early ‘90s as the woman who encouraged Linda Tripp to record Monica Lewinsky’s conversations, as well as being the person who advised Ms Tripp to warn Monica to keep the blue dress.

Mr. Goldberg is scheduled to speak at Campbell Hall on Sunday, October 7. The following is a severely edited version of our hour-long-plus conversation via cell phone: I in SaintMalo, France, and he in Washington, D.C., where he lives.

Q. You were born in 1969 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. How did a nice Jewish boy end up a conservative rather than an Upper West Side liberal?

A. My parents were conservative, and I didn’t think of myself all that political until I got to college. My dad was a journalist, and one of his favorite things to do was to take his sons out for long walks and tell them how bad communism was. So, I got a lot of education out of him. He gave up grad school in Eastern European History, but he was a voracious reader.

You’re one of the few conservative speakers who remains relatively unmolested on campuses. You can give a talk without students (and others) breaking windows and setting police cars on fire.

What explains that?

I used to arouse more hostility from

people, but I’ve tried to move away from that kind of stuff. The Ann Coulter-Milo Yiannopoulos method of [confrontational speaking] I just feel is counterproductive. You get people who start arguing that anything is justifiable as long as you get the right people upset. I think conservatives have moved away from trying to convince people and that’s a real problem.

When National Review ran its anti-Donald Trump screed during the Republican primary season, I believe you lost a lot of readers. The writers seemed to imply that the nation would be better off if Hillary were elected. Did you feel that way? Do you still feel that way?

With all due respect, I think you are completely wrong. That issue appeared before the Iowa caucuses. We were, in effect, endorsing the field against Trump. It’s been retroactively turned into a Never Trump issue, but it wasn’t. If you look at the contributors to it, lots of those people went on to endorse Trump and support him and defend Trump to this day. Some don’t, but the problem at the time... and I’m very proud of that issue. I think that the gist of it was absolutely right.

I didn’t write for it, because most of the senior editors didn’t; we let the editorial speak for all of us, but there are people at National Review who are pro-Trump and there are people at National Review who are anti-Trump. I would say most of them are Trump skeptical. But I don’t think anybody has written in the National Review the words “Better to vote for Hillary.”

I didn’t vote for Hillary. I didn’t vote for Trump either. I said in Suicide of the West, that if it came down to my vote, I would have voted for Donald Trump. But, what I wasn’t going to

do was endorse his character or his tactics or lie about him.

Is there any way you would or could support President Trump? Is there anything he could do or say that would garner your support?

Support him? What does that mean?... ...Say something nice or approve of something he’s done?...

I’ve approved lots of things that he’s done. I like, I think literally, every judicial appointment he’s made. I like the tax cuts, certainly on the corporate side, less on the personal side, but I still like them; I like the deregulatory stuff; I like moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; I like defunding the PLO. I mean, I can give you a very long list.

But, what I will not do is say that he is the world’s greatest negotiator; I will not say that he is a decent man or a man of good character; I will not say that he hires the best people; I will not say that he acts presidential, because he does not. And, I will not say that he is 6-3 and 230 pounds, which is what he claims. (Editor’s note: For the record, Donald Trump is six-foot-two and weighs, well, probably considerably more than 230 pounds.)

You made some great points in your earlier book, Liberal Fascism, published some 10 years ago. Do you feel the observations you made at the time have been substantiated in light of what has developed – Black Lives Matter, Antifa, Democratic Socialism, for example – over the past decade?

I think I was absolutely right on the history and on the political taxonomy. That said, I also think the book was something of a spectacular failure in that part of my point was to get people to stop using the word “fascist,” because they were using it wrong; they were pointing it in the wrong direction and if anything, people have been hurling the “F” word more, not less, since that book came out.

The thing that breaks my heart about the current moment we’re in is that my point was that in the AngloAmerican tradition of what it means to be a conservative isn’t a blood-andsoil conservatism, the likes of which they had in Europe. We conservatives are defenders of a radical revolution in terms of the Enlightenment and in terms of the American founding – so therefore, what we are conserving is something very different than what someone who wants to restore or maintain the monarchy, or clericalism, or whatever. One of my concerns these days is [certain conservatives] are embracing the old European model of what it means to be a conservative in the first place.

Another thing I’m unhappy with about the book (Liberal Fascism) is that I’m one of the people who elevated the importance of Saul Alinsky to conservatives. I did it to point out what a bad influence he was on American politics and how dangerous his ideas were. What happened was that in the ensuing 10 years, a lot of conservatives started to develop what you could call “Saul Alinsky Envy” and began using Alinsky-like tactics themselves.

But isn’t the reason for using what you call “Alinsky-like tactics” to fight fire with fire, to use political tactics that have proven effective?

Maybe, but one of the reasons I have a higher standard for the right is that the modern American conservative movement is the only reliable faction in American politics – with the exception of some libertarians – that as a matter of dogma, fundamentally defends the American founding, our founding principles, free-market capitalism, and all the rest.

Let’s talk about your book, Suicide of the West; How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism, and Identity Politics is Destroying American Democracy. What is it you hope to impart to your audience at UCSB when you speak there?

One of the things I’ll stress is that, while I had lots of differences with Barack Obama, one of the things he was right about was that if you could pick a time to be born, and you didn’t know if you were going to be born black or white, rich or poor, you would want to be born right now, in the United States of America. One of the core arguments I make in the book is that we don’t appreciate how unbelievably fortunate we are to be born in this country in this time.

For thousands of years, the average human being lived on less than $3 a day everywhere around the world. We only started to get rich once, in terms of the average person, in all of human history, about 300 years ago. It started in one place: England. It moved to Holland, then the United States, and right now we are living in the greatest moment of poverty alleviation in all of human history. And we should have some gratitude for this.
