Creating Real Water Independence for Montecito

A

fter 25 years of deliberation, Montecito still has no reliable and affordable long-term solution for water independence, rain or no rain. A group of community leaders has approached the Montecito Water District (MWD) and the Montecito Sanitary District (MSD) with a proposal to develop the preliminary design, engineering, and costing of a fully integrated state-of-the-art plant to be located on the existing Montecito Sanitary District site across from the Santa Barbara Cemetery on Channel Drive. The hope would be that the two special districts will work cooperatively on this preliminary project. Such a community-based study would target a design level of approximately 30 percent, which is the minimum amount of work that needs to be completed to apply for state funding and expedite potential emergency permitting.

The Current Situation

Montecito needs to generate its own guaranteed supply of high-quality potable water. MWD has attempted to solve the current water supply shortage by short-term purchases of imported water, mandatory rationing allocations, severe penalties for exceeding usage, and more recently, by a proposed “water shortage emergency surcharge” which will nearly double water rates for Montecito customers who have already reduced their water usage by nearly 50 percent.

Successful conservation efforts have created a Gordian knot for MWD. The more water is conserved, the less sales revenue is generated. Reduced water sales of only $9 million have created an operating loss of $5 million, because income from water sales is insufficient to cover fixed operating costs. The current “pay more for less water” business model is probably not sustainable.

We Already Have The Location

MWD has already retained RBF as its consultant to study 10 sites for a desalination plant. This is puzzling because the Montecito Sanitary District already owns a workable site, saving land and acquisition costs of $5 to $10 million.

MSD’s existing wastewater outflow line, which now discharges 600,000 gallons per day of treated wastewater into the ocean off Butterfly Beach, could be converted to a desalination brine discharge line, possibly saving another $6 to $10 million. Permitting and CEQA costs would be far less using the existing MSD wastewater facility upgrade than what it may cost using another proposed location. Re-designing the existing MSD plant would free five acres of existing publicly owned land that could be reclaimed for additional desalination use, or future plant expansion, with the potential of creating a new $5 million asset for MSD. Also noteworthy is the possibility that recycling water to a higher standard could attract low-interest state funding. And finally, an integrated facility could reduce both operating and energy costs.

Existing Business Models

Fortunately, Orange County, San Jose, Santa Paula, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, and Wichita Falls, Texas, all provide useful models for the creation of a state-of-the-art facility in Montecito. Of particular interest is a new venture in Cambria, a coastal California town of 6,000 residents, which combined its existing water and sanitary districts into a new Community Services District to design, permit and build a small brackish water desalination and wastewater recycling plant in six months. The Cambria project was announced in May 2014 and was completed in December 2014, truncating the usual decades of environmental reviews, public hearings, and lawsuits into six months by obtaining emergency status and securing some permits during construction, but delaying others until after the plant is in operation. While Cambria’s water needs are very different than Montecito’s, Cambria has become a poster child for finding creative solutions to thorny problems.

RBF, the consultant retained by MWD, has indicated that a stand-alone desalination plant could cost ratepayers $72 to $86 million. This is very expensive. By comparison, initial estimates from the discussions conducted by our community-based workgroup indicate that an integrated facility could deliver potable desalinated water at a base cost of $2,200 per acre foot ($5.05 per billable unit to ratepayers) and wastewater treated to a potable standard for $1,200 an acre-foot ($2.75 per billable unit), both quite affordable at a time when MWD water rates are climbing into the $5 to $10 per billable HCF (hundred cubic foot) range.

Provocation & The Pope

W

e are being told that the provocative cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet in shameful attitudes are really no more than humorous expressions of free speech. But, what would the reaction of the Catholic community be if that weekly magazine were to show the pope sodomizing a little boy, or receiving oral sex from a little girl?

The pope, as far as we know, has not himself engaged in such disgraceful activity, but some of his minions have.

Would the Catholic community smile then at such depictions and refer to them as harmless expressions of freedom of speech?

It’s not likely.

Who is Making Decisions?

Over 40 world leaders show their support of the terrorist attack, and our president was enjoying playoff football.

I do not have a problem with the president watching the games like many of us, but I do have a problem with the White House press secretary saying that he was not even in the loop.

Josh Earnest said the White House took the blame but said Mr. Obama himself was not personally involved in the decision. What? The White House, the last time I checked, cannot make any decision.

It is like a dog-and-pony show, or better yet a Howdy Doody show – or even worse, a really bad puppet show.

Who is running our beloved country? How can John Kerry stay in India and not be sent to march with millions of people and world leaders?

Let’s be clear, President Obama is our president, elected twice on the “Hope and change” motto. It just saddens me of the lost hope and unpleasant change I have seen.

Are these the people who enabled Osama Bin Laden to avoid justice for 10 years?

Are these the people who consider Osama Bin Laden to be a hero and martyr?

Are these the people who refuse to denounce and condemn terrorists and terrorism?

Dunderheads at Duke

This is the result of average folks rising up and saying: ‘nuff, already.

The Student Muslim Association at Duke persuaded the powers-to-be on campus to put forth a Muslim Call to Prayer every Friday at 1 pm over the campus-wide public-address system.

In a day and age when Duke University is making it more and more difficult and uncomfortable to openly be Christian or Jewish on campus, less than a hundred Muslim students [thought] it was within their right and prerogative to disturb everybody 22 – 29 January 2015

who’s still on campus Friday afternoon with a religious cacophonous noise in a foreign language that means absolutely nothing to 99 percent of the people who are forced to endure it.

Throughout the nation, more and more communities are placing restrictions on Christian churches that ring their chimes during the week as a means of giving the time to the neighborhood. It seems anymore that churches can only ring their bells before services on Sunday morning.

Of course, the source for this angst and annoyance over church bells comes from mostly non- and anti-religious people who say these chimes are a constant and daily bother to their lives.

America is under attack from Islamic “extremists.” More and more of these radicals are born and nurtured right here in America. While it’s true that all Muslims are not extremists and terrorists, it is true that all-known extremists and terrorists connected to this network of groups who wish to destroy Western Christian Civilization are Muslim. No Baptists, Jews, or Pentecostals among these extremists.

Go back to the late 1930s and 1940s war years: We didn’t coddle and protect our domestic populations that naturally allied themselves with America’s enemies. A whole section of Yorkville – part of Manhattan on the Upper East Side – was a den of collaborators and sympathizers with Nazi Germany. We didn’t incarcerate most of the sympathizers, but we kept a sharp eye on the activities and movements of the collaborators, and did throw a number of these people in jail for good reasons.

The leftists running Duke University are fully aware there’s a war going on.

They just don’t think that America represents the good guys in this clash of civilizations. They despise Western civilization as demonstrated by traditional and exceptional America, and they align themselves with anybody and everybody who considers exceptional America as its enemy.

But Duke also needs tuition money to stay in business while educating America’s rich kids, on American soil, for the revolution they hope will transform America radically away from what it historically was.

This time they went too far, and

stepped in it. The stench awakened the patriots from their slumber just enough for them to rise up in protest against this nefarious assault on the very traditions that have made Duke the filthy-rich school that it is today.

The Arm-In-Arm Army

One needs an ironic sense of humor along with a cool, clear head for the human race to transcend the critical mass reached last weekend. It was eye-popping to see 40 world leaders arm-in-arm marching the streets of Paris. According to CNN, approximately 3.7 million people in Paris and neighboring large cities in France showed up.

Conspicuously absent was President Obama, who failed to send a U.S. representative, even though Attorney General Eric Holder was a stone’s throw away. It wasn’t an oversight.

Obama is a peacemaker on the Yin side of the equation, which doesn’t allow for him to take sides in the collective viewpoint. Duality doesn’t exist in his reality, nor for all liberals; ergo, he lacks a “fire-in-the belly.” The revered Ronald Reagan had a competitive, “can-do” spirit found only on the Yang side. I miss the lack of leadership in America.

The martyred Charlie Hebdo cartoonists succeeded beyond their wildest dreams with the jeering, outrageous caricatures lampooning everybody and everything from Pope Francis to the seventh-century Muhammad and his followers. One-sidedness was not their gig. Charlie Hebdo was part of the rarified 10 percent of humanity vibrating at Meta-Physical Chakras eight-10 (going back 5,000 years of ancient wisdom), who are born free of the fake physical world conjured up by the 90 percent of ordinary folks enslaved by the ego and stuck on merely one of the seven Physical Chakras, ranging in speeds from Fear (slow) at root all the way to Freedom (high) at crown.

There is no time or space in this Third Dimension. It’s all illusion, proven by quantum physics over a century ago.

MUS Board Explores New Facilities Plan

A

t their meeting on January 20, the Montecito Union School Board discussed the state of the current campus facilities for the first time since the failure of Measure Q, the $27,150,000 school bond measure that was on the ballot in November. In addition to much legally required work, the proposed upgrade project included a new cafeteria facility, outdoor deck and amphitheater, new classrooms, and much more.

“This is going to be a multi-month conversation,” said superintendent Tammy Murphy, who came to the board asking them for guidance on whether several crucial campus issues can wait until the next bond measure opportunity in 2016. “Can these issues wait another two years?” Murphy asked the board. Murphy and architect Tyson Cline estimate the fire and safety issues, much of which is deferred maintenance, will cost upward of $19 million.

“What I heard over and over from the community is that if the project did not include the cafeteria building, they would have voted in favor of the measure,” said board president Gwyn Lurie. Following the vote down, the district decided against a formal evaluation of voter behavior to better understand why the measure did not pass. “We have immediate needs for safety and security, and I’m very concerned that we haven’t fixed them yet.

We need to fix them before the next bond opportunity,” said board member Peter van Duinwyk, who said campus security is the most pressing issue in his opinion.

Murphy asked the board to approve a renewed contract with Cline and his firm, Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects, to look into three major

immediate issues at the school: the replacement of 100-year-old windows and doors, securing the perimeter of the open campus, and increasing the safety and traffic flow of the parking lots. The board, which will pay for immediate safety improvements through reserves, is tasked with figuring out how these enhancements will fit into a larger plan for the school.

“We don’t want to spend a lot of money on things we are going to have to eliminate or redo later,” Lurie said.

“You have to figure out the big picture before you can choose the small pieces,” said new board member Chad Chase.

In addition to these potential improvements, the board was also briefed on two other internal projects proposed for this summer: the re-carpeting of 33 classrooms (estimated to cost $200,000), and the repaving of the basketball court due to drainage issues ($250,000), which was not in the original upgrade plan because the ball fields were to be moved to a different location on campus. “It really is a domino effect,” Cline said.

The board voted unanimously to allow Cline and his team to draw up some proposals and possibilities, and come back to a future meeting with cost estimates.

he owner of the Condor Express, Hiroko Benko, gathered up a few of her many friends for a private whale watching excursion. I didn’t know boats can have jet engines – this is a 75-foot quad jet catamaran that can cruise at speeds near 30 knots.

That makes it the fastest way to get the 28 miles to Santa Cruz Island and whale-watching waters. Other boats can take two to three hours.

On the trip out, you never know what you might encounter. One guest was aboard last April and saw literally thousands of dolphins all around the boat. Santa Barbara can claim the best whale watching in the world yearround. When the gray whales aren’t migrating, the humpback and gigantic blue whales come to eat the krill, which grows in abundance.

The channel is home to more than 27 species of whales and dolphins, six types of seals and sea lions, and countless sea birds and fish throughout the year. The captains and crew are would-be naturalists. Tens of thousands of people have come to see this spectacle. To drop a few names: Billy Baldwin, Natalie Portman, the Eagles band, and KISS. This trip we had the cook from Downton Abbey, Lesley Nicol, and her husband, David. Lesley’s passion is to save the bears from bear bile farms. Twenty years ago, Dr. Jill Robinson discovered the bears are enclosed in cages in China where they can’t move because the Chinese want the bile from their gall bladder for special medicines. Now it can be made synthetically, but this practice continues. Dr. Jill has a bear sanctuary in Chengdu, China. Ali McGraw is an activist and she, Lesley and the doctor have traveled to Washington, D.C.,

In decades past when the military was doing sonar tests, the whales left our area. Once the tests stopped, they came back. Hiroko’s late husband, Fred, was a fisherman when he decided that whale watching could be more lucrative. He’s credited with being the first on the West Coast to offer whale watching. He also designed the Condor Express.

On our trip, we munched delicious breakfast rolls and bagels while going out and yummy sandwiches for lunch.

The sea air might have had something to do with our appetites. Meantime, we saw one whale, some dolphin, and sea lions. But if you’re on a trip and don’t see whale or exceptional sightings, the captain will issue you “whale checks, good for a free trip on another open party excursion.” The trip is one half-day in the summer and winter, and two and one half hours for the coastal gray whale watching in the spring.

In the early 1700s, he was working as a composer and musician for Prince Leopold of Cothen, now Kothen, Germany. It is believed that he traveled to Berlin in 1719 to purchase a harpsichord for Leopold (Jeffrey Schindler was playing harpsichord for the Lobero concert). While in Berlin, Bach performed for Christian Ludwig Markgraf von Brandenburg. Hence the Brandenburg concertos but if Bach wanted a new job, he didn’t get it.

“It is ironic that while the Brandenburg Concertos are now some of Bach’s most famous and popular works, Bach may never have heard them and the Markgraf, for whom they were written, may never have heard them either,” explained Kevin Marvin, SBCO executive director.

“Local resident Marilyn Gevirtz practically steals the documentary, reminiscing about going to Mount Vernon Junior High with Tab in Los Angeles recounting the frenzy he created with teenage girl classmates by simply just walking down the hall,” adds Allan. “ Another local connection is Tamara Asseyev. Tab starred in the first film she produced, Sweet Kill in 1972, directed by Curtis Hanson.”

Tab’s career was revived in the 1980s when he starred opposite the late Divine in John Waters’s Polyester in 1981 and Paul Bartlett’s Lust in the Dust in 1985, as well as appearing in Grease 2 in 1982.

As well as acting, Tab was also known as a successful singer with his 1957 record “Young Love” topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks and was one of the biggest hits of the rock n’ roll era....

Street Cred Former Opera Santa Barbara president Fred Sidon’s son, Lex, who co-owns a New York restaurant, has added filmmaking to his menu.

The 81-minute movie, Grand Street, shot on 35-mm film five years ago on a 24-day schedule, chronicles a chance encounter between two drifting souls on the teeming streets of late night Manhattan, and got its first screening at the recent 26th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.

“It has been a long road and is really two and a half years overdue,” says Lex, who is married to fashion designer Erin Beatty, co-owner of the popular brand Suno, which sells at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

“I ran out of money several times on the way and raised funds on Kickstarter and from independent sources, including a college buddy.

twice a year, once in Wroclaw, Poland, in conjunction with the American Film Festival, and once in Paris at the Champs Elysees fest. Six or seven selected U.S. directors show their works in progress to the top foreign distributors and international sales reps. They get a first look, and winners are awarded post-production services and other funds to finish projects. I received production costs worth more than $80,000, which, of course, was a major assist.”

Lex also met a talented editor in Poland and the film was eventually re-cut by remote, he in Warsaw and Lex in New York.

“It was a long process, but it ultimately got to the film’s real emotional core. Slowly I crept to the finish line until I could start showing it, eventually getting selected for Palm Springs.

We were the only American film in the New Voices-New Visions category and sold out all shows, as well as being picked as one of eight must-see films along with Selma and Still Alice.”

Lex’s star, Charlotte Riley, 34, flew out from London for the desert event along with her fiancé, top actor Tom Hardy. The film’s other co-star, Tom Byam Shaw, is also British, although both roles call for them to be New Yorkers.

Lex is already working on his next film project, Draggers, an atmospheric drama set aboard a New England fishing boat, which will also star Riley, who is also co-producing.

Although actors and other film crew attending the popular fest are invited many months before the nominations season, an impressive 24 Academy Award nominees will be visiting our tony town for the 30th annual festival which kicks off next Tuesday, January 27.

Together Again Former Santa Barbara warbler Katy Perry and rocker John Mayer are further fueling rumors that they have rekindled their romance.

Almost a year after they split, the dynamic duo have been spotted around Hollywood on romantic dates, including an openly passionate dinner at the oh-so-trendy Sunset Tower Hotel.

The twosome ended their on-off relationship in February last year after first starting dating in 2012. They split briefly in March the following year.

The pair were seen together at a friend’s home for dinner, but tried to keep a low profile, arriving and leaving separately.

John, 37, and former Dos Pueblos High student Katy, 30, have also visited a therapist before giving romance another try for the fourth time, according to Us Weekly.

Woodward at the Coral

W

hat do Nixon, Ford, Reagan, both Bushes, Hillary Clinton, and Obama all have in common? Answer: Award-wining reporter and writer Bob Woodward has either interviewed and/or written about them extensively. He gave an engaging luncheon talk at the Coral Casino last Friday which was part of the “Moral and Ethical Leadership in the American Presidency” speaker series conducted by Westmont College.

Few, if any, reporters have earned the trust of political leaders, the admiration of public or the journalistic/ writing awards like Mr. Woodward (see a list below). Perhaps he is best known for his actions as an investigative reporter, along with Carl Bernstein for The Washington Post, in uncovering the Watergate scandal that was portrayed in the movie and book, All the President’s Men. Consequently, my wife and I felt lucky to obtain tickets early for this sellout event and what follows are some of the insights and impressions I gained from the talk.

Pardoning Nixon. Richard Nixon resigned the presidency August 9, 1974, and Gerald Ford who assumed the presidency, pardoned him about 30 days later. Bob Woodward, like many at the time, was aghast and bitter about what appeared to be a despicable act.

Many felt a “corrupt bargain” had been made where Nixon would resign in exchange for a Ford pardon. Many also believed (and Ford later concurred) that the pardon was the main reason Ford ended up losing the election to Jimmy Carter in 1976.

After numerous interviews with Ford, Woodward finally reached a moment 25 years later, something he described as “that moment all reporters wait for”: Ford revealed his heartfelt reason for issuing the pardon. It was because if Nixon was not pardoned, the legal process would have playedout over several years, dragging the country through more of the disgraceful behavior of the ex-president. By giving the pardon, the country was, “Free of Nixon” using Ford’s words.

Woodward now admits that he, like many others, was wrong about Ford’s pardon, now viewing it as a healing act. Woodward then said because Ford had, “the courage and wisdom to see and do the greater good for the country,” he was given the John F. Kennedy, Profile in Courage Award in 2001 by Sen. Ted Kennedy. A final vindication for President Ford.

Woodward used Ford’s pardon as an example of what is the essence of the job of the presidency, that is, “to find the next path for the greater good of the country” and “to determine what the next overriding idea for the country must be.” His view for what the next president must bring to the 2016

Presidency is “To govern.” He said, “The people want the government to function. The next president’s message must be, ‘I can govern,’ and to do that you must compromise, take time to speak with the opposition and negotiate, but the object of negotiation is to get an agreement.” He feels new faces will emerge to offer such a message, therefore implying it will not be Hilary or Mitt who will win in 2016.

Assessing Obama. In interviewing President Obama, Mr. Woodward learned that the central view of his foreign policy lies within the Nobel Peace Prize speech he gave in 2009: “War is an expression of human folly.”

Woodward concurred with that statement but went on to say that he thinks Obama is “Armored with a good heart and is admired but, (pause) no one is afraid of him! And, especially now, there is a lot about the world that is very dangerous. In a dangerous world, you need to be tough and feared. And up to now, I have not seen that in Obama.”

Domestically, Woodward said, “Obama is sending the message that he does not come anywhere close to liking the opposition, and in any negotiation you must argue like a disagreeing friend. There is a key opposition U.S. senator whom Obama has called on the phone twice and had a short dinner with once – in five years! I would have assumed that senator would have been consulted every week.” Woodward continued, “Obama has no personal

relations with people outside his circle and it hurts him. You have to get together and have an ‘all-niter’.” To illustrate the effectiveness of personal dialogue, Mr. Woodward joked that one of Carter’s aides told him, “Look if you had been locked away at Camp David for 13 days with Jimmy Carter, you too would have signed anything!” referring to the 1978 peace accord reached between Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel.

“You cannot be embarrassed about compromise,” Woodward said. “It is the way our founders acted, and it is necessary to have ‘give and take’, it is American, it is called shared power.”

Woodward discussed the rush in journalism to “hurry-up” and explained that in order to get the real story it takes time, effort and face-toface contact with the subject. It was obvious that Woodward takes great pride in keeping government officials honest and getting them to talk with him, but he continues to be concerned about too much secrecy in government using the quote, “Democracy dies in the darkness” as a metaphor.

He took questions after his talk and one individual asked, “How did the fact that Robert Redford played you as a young reporter in the movie, All the President’s Men, affect the rest of your life?” Woodward chuckled and said, “There were a lot of young gals that came to the door on first dates back then that sure looked disappointed.”

Woodward was born in Illinois in 1943, graduated from Yale in 1965, served for five years in the Navy as an intelligence officer, contributed as a reporter on two Washington Post Pulitzer Prizes, was a (newly hired) lead Washington Post investigative reporter with Carl Bernstein on Watergate and the eventual resignation of President Nixon, won a Pulitzer Prize for his extensive coverage and stories about and after the 9/11 attack in 2001, authored and co-authored 16 non-fiction books, all national best sellers, and has won many journalism awards too numerous to mention. Groovin’ on Space Age Music

Steven Libowitz has reported on the arts and entertainment for more than 30 years; he has contributed to the Montecito Journal for more than ten years.

The album is like your own personal time capsule filtered through your life.

Yeah, definitely. I first heard this stuff 50 years ago or more. That’s an amazing lens to be looking through.

It’s a good chunk of time to have put in where I’m pretty much thinking about nothing else but music the whole time. So to play it now again, something has happened to it. At least I hope.

ill Frisell was waiting for a boarding call at an airport gate when he answered the phone earlier this week, and the location seemed quite appropriate given the title of his latest album, Guitars in the Space Age. Nothing seems more akin to the musical era than jet planes whisking us across the country, a concept that was just coming into its own in the late 1950s and early 60s, when most of the guitar-based music on the album was released.

Frisell made his bones collaborating with John Zorn, but long ago branched out into ever-expanding circles of sound, delving into songbooks from Charles Ives to Bob Dylan, from rock and blues and Nashville country. This latest project re-imagines such classic songs of the era as the Chantay’s “Pipeline”, Duane Eddy’s “Rebel Rouser”, Link Wray’s “Rumble”, the Byrds’s “Turn, Turn, Turn”, and the Kinks’s”Tired Of Waiting For You”.

Frisell returns to the Lobero Theatre on Monday night joined by longtime associate Greg Leisz on electric and pedal steel guitars, and his trio partners Tony Scherr on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums.

Q. You’ve done such a variety of music even over the last few years, often expanding boundaries and genres. What inspired you to make this album now?

A. The Lennon thing was kind of a revelation for me. It happened by accident, but then I realized, “Wait a minute, this music has been around and a part of my life the whole way 22 – 29 January 2015

but I’ve never really spent time actually playing it. That got me thinking about all these other songs, all the guitar music that had got me going in the first place, things that had been around my whole life. It was sort of like a research project. For me, it’s not really nostalgia. Of course, I have associations with all of these songs in emotional ways, but mostly I’m trying to firm up the whole foundation of where I’m coming from and learn more. But it’s also been so fun to play that music! Doing the record is a beginning. It’s like a blueprint for what the possibilities are. The music has grown around that. Even when we play the songs from the album live, they’re not just set in stone the way we recorded them. They develop a lot and have opened us up. It feels fresh every time we play them.

I was thinking the same thing – that it’s not really nostalgia but a way of moving forward by revisiting the past. So it’s like the opposite of nostalgia.

That’s the mystery. That’s what I’m always hoping, that this is current music. When you really study what they were doing, and imagine those moments when you hear one of these songs for the first time... Imagine what Louis Armstrong would sound like if you’d never heard it before. The most radical outrageous thing you’ve ever heard in your life yet still accessible. I’m always thinking about that, trying to find that place, figure that out – when it’s brand-new but still so universal that everyone gets it. I think about that a lot.

How did you choose the songs?

It was hard. The amount of great songs is just mind-blowing, so many songs are important, and it’s overwhelming how such long-lasting super-strong music was coming out at that time. Maybe that’s happening now and I’m just so out of touch... I picked things that were super personal to me. The Beach Boys song, “Surfer Girl”, was the first record I ever bought. Surf music was first thing that got me fired-up about the guitar.

Others were tributes to a particular guitarist, Merle Travis or Duane Eddy,

or others who were important for the history of the guitar. I could do nothing but this for the rest of my life and never exhaust the possibilities.

Given that, I’m wondering why you have two originals on the album. Were you just inspired by going back?

I didn’t think of them as being any kind of major or epic works. I was just thinking of interludes. I’d like to think that I can write my own stuff that fits in, or brings it more into the future rather than looking back. I do like to bring more of my own music into this band, but it seems like we always end up with the covers.

With all the different sounds of the songs, you only used one guitar. You’ve got lots. Why limit yourself?

There just wasn’t a reason to switch around. I was able to get everything I wanted out of that one instrument.

There can be too much emphasis put on the equipment. The sound comes more from what’s in your imagination than the guitar or amp or pedals.

Would you talk about your partnership with Greg Leisz? You guys really seem to be in sympatico.

He’s my guitar brother. We’ve been playing together for so long and in so

“I’m looking to cater to all ages and budgets,” she said. Stern, who shares her time between Montecito and Los Angeles, says her inventory is always changing, based on seasons and customer feedback.

The shopping center underwent a makeover last year after new owners Deborah and James Longo purchased the property. New sidewalks (including ADA ramps and handrails) and new signage were installed, and the building received a fresh coat of modern gray paint and a repaved parking lot. Stern’s shop has also been overhauled, with new dark wood floors, bright neutral walls, floating shelves, and an open, contemporary feel.

Chasen is located in the former of home of Montecito Sports, which closed last June, regrettably under our radar. We recently sat down with Montecito Sports owner Steve Ruggles, who says he is immensely enjoying his retirement, but misses the customers he built friendships with over the 39 years the store was open. “The store had a good run,” he said. Open for business in 1975, the shop carried a wide variety of sporting goods and fitness attire, as well as inventory that changed with industry trends, said Ruggles, who played Division I tennis at UCSB and has always been a sports enthusiast.

J

ay Dee Daugherty, an epic drummer and songwriter widely known for his work in the Patti Smith band, is returning to Santa Barbara on Tuesday, January 22, at the Granada Theatre, the first concert for the Patti Smith band here in 40 years. It has been quite the ride for his career since his days in SB, honing his chops on his drum kit at La Cumbre Junior High and forming the first “punkrock” bands in his teens with his childhood friend David Collert before punk evolved years later.

In high school, they hung out with Lance Loud and played in his band, first called the Loud Band, then formally called the Mumps. As Jay shares in my interview with him, Lance’s band was the catalyst that got him to NYC in 1974 and the rest is “his-story.”

In addition to being the iconic Patti Smith’s drummer for four decades, Jay has also gigged with Lester Bangs, the New York City No-Wave band Mars, Tom Verlaine, the CBGB’s house band Willie Nile, The Revelons with Fred Smith of Television, The Roches, The Beat, and the Indigo Girls Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum second album, Indigo Girls.

As a member of Patti Smith’s group, he has been nominated twice for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He’s looking forward to a packed house at the Granada and performing with Patti and the band for all his family and friends here, his hometown.

Q. You mentioned to me that you are excited to be doing a concert with Patti

Smith in your hometown of SB. Share your feelings about performing where you got your roots and what this means for you.

A. I’m lucky enough to be a Santa Barbara native and to have received all the blessings growing up in this paradise entails. One was getting to see all the major rock acts that stopped over between L.A. and San Francisco at Earl Warren Showgrounds in the 60s and 70s. I saw a great bumper sticker: “Yes, we’re old, but we had the best bands.” Right! It was an incredible education in music with substance.

Teenage grandiosity aside, I never dreamt I would be able to make music and support the vision of an incredible artist like Patti. I always hoped we would play Santa Barbara one day; it only took 40 years!

I saw Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young play at the UCSB stadium and heard former SB resident Crosby address the crowd: “In Santa Barbara High School, they told me I wouldn’t amount to a hill of beans. And here I am: a hill of beans.” I get it. It’s been a long trip to get back to the roots, practicing air drums to the console stereo in my parents’ living room in Mission Canyon to Rolling Stones records, and those first blissful moments of using my first drum set to play Them’s “Gloria” in a garage with my late friend, Swingin’ Dave Collert. I’m still playing “Gloria”!

Returning to Santa Barbara to play for the first time is especially poignant after the tragedies I dealt with in 2014.

My beloved wife, Christine, died trag-

ically here while we were on vacation last March. My old friend and musical conspirator David Collert passed away visiting New York City, and at the same time I spoke at his memorial at the Coral Casino in October, my brother Doug had a stroke in Nipomo and died shortly thereafter. I brought Christine’s ashes from Santa Barbara to New York, and David’s from New York to Santa Barbara. I don’t know if there’s such a thing as closure, but finally being able to play with Patti in Santa Barbara feels right and is connected to honoring the past and surrendering to the future.

At La Cumbre Junior High, you played drums in the marching band and co-created the “punk” bands Weirdo Stud and King Tut and the Space Queers. At that time in your life, what/ who was your inspiration to play drums and where did you dream about going with it?

Seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, like so many 11-year-olds, changed my life. It was bye-bye Boy Scouts, sports, and Go Karts, and hello puberty & rock and roll. Great timing, though I’d have to wait for the sex and drugs!

Music just exploded then. There were so many great groups that put out so much so often. But I was initially influenced by the British invasion of The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, and especially The Who. Keith Moon’s style could never be duplicated, but it sure was fun trying! It was the perfect outlet for teenage angst and aggression, and individuation from our parents’ generation.

Weirdo Stud was my first band, named after a paperback book of my girlfriend Colleen Patten’s dad. It was a rock and blues band featuring David Collert, a guitar prodigy who could hear anything once and play it, and friends Eric Neilsen on bass and Mike Hayden on vocals and harmonica.

We turned up at the Pershing Park band shell a couple of times for selfstyled love-ins and were shut down by the bemused authorities. Mostly, we played at dances and church basements and one slightly scary place called The Greasy Slough Duck Club, near UCSB. We became disillusioned and David and I started a joke band in 1971 called the most ridiculous name we could think of: King Tut and the Spacequeers.

He sang and I played guitar. We played the lamest songs we could think of, like “Judy In Disguise With Glasses” and a few Black Sabbath classics. There were some confrontational proto-punk shenanigans on stage, like insanely loud volume, cross-dressing and simulated sex acts with delicatessen items. Ahead of our time!

In her book, Just Kids, Patti Smith talks about her band evolving into a rock and roll band with Lenny Kaye, Richard Sohl and Ivan Kral, “...It was time for the next step. We needed to find another of our own kind, who would not alter but propel, who would be one of us. We ended our high-spirited set with a collective plea, ‘We need a drummer and we know you’re out there.’ He was more than we could imagine. Jay Dee Daugherty... became part of our generation.” How did Patti approach you to be in the band and [what were] your initial feelings about it?

If it weren’t for my high school friends Kristian Hoffman and Lance Loud, I would have never gone to New York City. Lance wanted to capitalize on his notoriety as the designated problem child in the PBS series, An American Family, often referred to as the first reality television show and deserving of its own article. I landed in NYC at the perfect time, just when it became “The Place Where It Was All Happening.” CBGB and Max’s Kansas City were just starting to have unsigned bands that oth22 – 29 January 2015

Men, Even Wise Men, Are Pigs

I

consider myself a fairly liberal man when it comes to the battle of the sexes.

My wife is certainly my equal (apart from bowling and spitting), and she’s my superior during real times of crisis (e.g., when the new drapes arrive and they’re a shade too light). However, I must not be the progressive man I think I am, because two women felt the need to send me the same holiday article about how the night of Jesus Christ’s birth might have gone differently if it involved three wise women instead of three wise men. Below is a copy of the seasonal message.

erwise couldn’t get arrested – The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, and Patti. The first time I saw her play I was mesmerized, and the second time I realized that every performance was different and improvised, and that was mind-blowing.

She didn’t have a drummer; it was a rock band waiting for a missing piece – me! It was a very small scene then, her boyfriend Tom Verlaine’s band, Television, had us open for them at CBGB, she saw me, and I patiently waited for an opportunity to sit in and after an agonizing wait while she auditioned, scads of other candidates got the chance to rehearse and a few days later was invited to join the band.

A few weeks later we were gigging with Bob Dylan attending, and then recording an album, Horses, at Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios. It was beyond a dream come true.

What, for you, are the musical keys that drive the compositions with the Patti Smith band?

Every song evolves in its own way according to the writers. Patti increasingly writes complete songs on her own, but another way is that she might hear one of us might play a musical fragment that catches her ear, and that will get developed further and massaged into a song. Sometimes we come to her with a piece of music that has a skeleton structure or melody line, and she’ll make it her own.

Because it’s rather difficult to demo a song from behind a drumkit, I make demos at home, play them for her, and if she likes it the band will rehearse it into shape. Everything is tailored to support her artistic voice and her vision of how a song should be.

On Patti’s 11th studio album Banga, released June 2012, you wrote the song “Mosaic” and play a mandola. Tell us about the composition and your choice of the instrument.

A mandola is a bigger and lower pitched cousin of a mandolin. There’s a lot of guitar players in this band!

Like everybody else! If I want to contribute in the stringed world, another voice is necessary. Most of the music I’ve contributed, for what it’s worth, usually comes to me in the space between dreams and wakefulness, the hypnagogic state. I’ll wake up with an idea, fall out of bed, grab an instrument, and turn on a recorder quick before it disappears back into the song ether. We used my demo of “Mosaic” as the bed for that song, played live over it, and kept some of the original track. Like many drummers, I’m a closet guitarist. Besides the mandola, I added some acoustic and electric guitars, a boon I’m granted occasionally on some of my song contributions. I like my little guitar solo on “Trespasses”, but it does make one a little nervous to try and inhabit the same space as Tom Verlaine and Lenny Kaye.

Can you mention the song highlights for this tour stop in SB? The sets are different every night, cooked fresh before we go onstage. We stay away from formulas and don’t let anything get stale, although there will probably a few songs people would expect to hear. This is not an oldies act, we do not play by rote or role.

I’m playing for my life every time we go on. Patti is an incandescent presence onstage, even more so than the first time I saw her perform at Max’s Kansas City in 1974. She’s different every time you see her, but always on •MJ fire. She’s the real deal.

This seems like blatant sexism to me, and I for one am tired of men being portrayed as ignorant buffoons who have to get naked to count to 21. And I’m not alone. Two renowned national Men’s organizations – MASS (Men Against Stereotypical Sexism) and MWCFTKITRWTWH (Men Who Can’t Find The Ketchup In the Refrigerator Without Their Wife’s Help) – have combined resources and hired me to refute this holiday piece.

So, I channeled my favorite chauvinist, Charles Bukowski, and came up with the following: Three Wise Women would have asked directions Only a woman would need directions even with a big-ass star pointing the way. arrived on time Only if there were no outlet malls along the way. helped deliver the baby Because they could never just stand back and watch a wondrous event without sticking their nose in it. brought practical gifts If you consider flowers or a candle more practical than gold. cleaned the stable If they were really wise, they would have persuaded Joseph to clean the stable by dangling the possibility of a Costco hotdog for dinner (my wise woman uses this method affectionately). made a casserole Probably gluten-free. and there would have been peace on Earth.

Yeah, right. There aren’t a lot of examples to pick from, because for so long women stayed home to clean the stable and make casseroles, but a few “peaceful” names come to mind: Boudica, Golda Meir, Margaret

It’s difficult to determine whether Jim Alexander is a wiseacre or a wise man, particularly when it comes to analyzing how the evening of Jesus Christ’s birth would be a different story if Three Wise Women had been involved.

How’s that for sexist, Sweetie? Look, there’s no denying that men have ruled the world in the past and we’ve made a mistake or two (World War I and disco come to mind), but I’m not convinced women would’ve done better. If you need proof that women are just as messed up as men, all you have to do is turn on the Bravo! network.

Having said that, I think women do deserve a chance at being in charge, and I’m certainly willing to give them a shot.

I decided to conduct a survey of my many female friends and ask them what they’d change if they woke up tomorrow and it was suddenly “A Woman’s World.”

Several wanted to abolish the NFL. Not a good idea if you ask me. Beer and potato chip sales would plummet, sending the economy (and me) into a deep depression.

Two of them agreed that the bald eagle shows bad moral character and thought we should change our national bird to the titmouse.

One of my female friends declared she’d change the expression “As American as mom, baseball, and apple pie” to “As American as mom, figure skating, and Vanilla acai parfait.” Many of my women friends surveyed thought something had to be done about parallel parking – either make all cars so they could do it automatically, or make parallel parking spaces six feet longer. Several thought grocery stores should have a shoe department.

None of the females surveyed were happy with our current national anthem, and they seemed evenly split as to what song they’d prefer as our country’s official hymn, with Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” getting 51 percent of the vote, and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” getting another 51 percent (women are notoriously bad at math). In contrast, most men believe our national anthem should be Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild.”

Finally, 100 percent of women surveyed were a bit embarrassed to admit that they liked being referred to as “Sexy Pants.”

Needless to say, and as a disclaimer, I’d like to state that all females in this survey were a product of my imagination and this piece was written tongue-in-cheek.

Nevertheless, when my wife reads it, I’ll be eating Top Ramen for a month. •MJ

Peaking Peking Just 24 hours earlier the Granada was sold out for another international event, The Peking Acrobats.

The 29-year-old troupe, which has redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics, pushes the envelope with astonishing juggling dexterity and incredible balancing feats, showcasing tremendous skill and ability.

Masters of agility and grace, one of the closing acts was the perfect example, with four wine bottles on a table on to which was placed a four-legged chair, one leg on each bottle neck.

The acrobat then placed nine chairs on top of that, eventually being perched precariously at least 40 feet above the stage and then performing a number of maneuvers when he reached his pinnacle.

tation are the result of three-dimensional people living in a four-dimensional universe. Space/time continuum does exist only in the Fourth Dimension, where time actually slows down when one is moving at high frequencies. One doesn’t age and there’s only One Reality (i.e. Unity Consciousness).

There’s a small window of opportunity, now that the world is at full attention. I can see two major bifurcated paths available to us: Plan A: Huge escalations in global warfare in retaliation of the attack on our freedom of speech and liberty (very déja vu). Shakespeare said: “There is no good or bad. Only our thinking makes it so.” Evil is in the eye of the beholder.

Or, Plan B: Ordinary citizens of the world unite and band together, as now, in massive numbers, taking a leap of faith that if a critical mass of enlightened people all raise their voice together as one to shout: “Enough already! Give peace a chance,” that peace could actually prevail and endure if enough of us truly want it.

Let’s choose wisely this time.

Sunset at Butterfly

If you were around at sunset on January 9 and didn’t go down to the beach or at least outside, you missed one of Santa Barbara’s most glorious sunsets in a long time. The rows of billowing clouds were striated by gentle winds high in the sky. As the more red than golden ball of sun dropped below the horizon, the colorful display not only attracted hundreds of onlookers but also spurred spontaneous applause and gasps of wonder.

It was a real treat. I took this photo with my iPhone and, though it doesn’t do it complete justice, should give you an idea of what it was like.

Conductor and music director Heiichiro Ohyama performed Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos 1,2,3,4,5 and 6, not often done in a single concert. Ohyama and the orchestra were thrilled to have a full house, the first time ever. They strive to perform a well-known repertoire including music written in this century. Conducting student Jeffrey Evans founded the SBCO in 1978. solar plate processes. They put their marks on paper by hand and press printing focusing on a wide range of expressions and techniques.

The exhibition opened with a reception at the Arts Fund Gallery, which is in the heart of the Funk Zone at 205-C Santa Barbara Street. I love the paint job on their building which looks like paint spilling over the sides of a can – truly clever.

Brad Nack is the executive director of the Arts Fund, which was established as a nonprofit in 1983. They create, fund and administer programs

that foster the arts for the people of our county. You may know of them for their Teen Arts Mentorship Program that matches promising high school students with professional mentors in various workshops representing all the cultural arts.

The gallery has been around since 2001. It has morphed into six professionally crafted shows per year.

Water costing $2,200 per acre foot (AF) translates to a cost of 3/5 of a penny per gallon, extremely inexpensive compared to the cost of commercially purchased bottled water. Half of desalination costs are spent driving seawater through reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to remove salt and other impurities. Cut energy costs to cut desal costs. Cut permitting costs, and desal costs come down even more.

Beware the State Water Debacle

Montecito residents made a bad bet in the 1990s, ignoring those who warned against relying on state water as an emergency provider in times of drought.

In recent times, the State Water Project had a total of 29 million AF of available water and yet had promised a total of 154 million AF to various California users. Montecito and its fellow South Central communities possess only junior water rights. Last year, when needed most, the State Water Project delivered less than 10 percent of Montecito’s 2,900 AF allotment.

Governor Brown wants MWD to double-down and help fund his new $24-billion Twin Tunnels project, which will not produce a single drop of new water, but merely reroute Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta water to agricultural farmers and the huge Metropolitan Water District, serving 1.4 million customers in Los Angeles and the users in Kern County. This is a highly questionable solution to meet Montecito’s long-term water needs at an affordable price.

Instead of discharging treated wastewater into the ocean, it can now be recovered and reused for landscaping, or injected into existing groundwater basins for inexpensive natural storage. According to the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), there are more than 250 water recycling plants in the State of California, recycling some 450,000 to 580,000 AFY of water. DWR estimates that an additional 1.4 million to 1.7 million AFY could be recycled by 2030. State financing is available for recycle projects. There are currently 43 coastal wastewater treatment plants in California discharging nearly 1.5 million AF of effluent into the Pacific Ocean. Recycling Montecito’s wastewater is environmentally responsible, helps heal the ocean, and provides a small but reliable supply of less expensive water.

The Desalination Component

This month, the Orange County Water District voted to enter negotiations with a private firm to buy 56,000 AFY of desalinated seawater under a long-term water purchase/sales agreement. A Citizens’ Project Participants Committee was formed to work with the special districts on costing and funding.

Montecito has insufficient wastewater to meet all its needs for water independence. Eleven desalination plants have already been built and another 16 are proposed along the California coast. Israel has transformed itself from a parched desert into a land of water surplus. Today, desalination plants in Israel produce 486,400 acre feet of water, or more than half that country’s total freshwater needs. In addition, Israel treats and recycles more than 80 percent of household wastewater, the highest recapture rate in the world.

A Positive Vision

What’s needed now is for all parties to craft and cost an innovative benchmark solution for a joint wastewater treatment and desalination facility on the Montecito Sanitary District site. Creating the benchmark is a 90-day process.

Cindy Feinberg, incoming president of the Montecito Association, has proposed the formation of a new Water Security Sub-Committee, as an additional participant in the process. Environmental groups, such as Heal the Ocean, also deserve a seat at the table. A properly constructed model will serve as a benchmark to determine financial feasibility and the impact on ratepayers. As importantly, a fully costed solution provides a yardstick to compare alternatives, such as a joint effort with the City of Santa Barbara or Carpinteria.

What is needed, in conclusion, is a broad coalition of people, receptive to new ideas, with a goal of guaranteeing a sufficient and reliable water supply for Montecito, rain or no rain, at an affordable cost.

Vive La France!

A

petite woman with engaging brown eyes smiles and greets me in French. “Bonjour!” she says, “Ça va?” We are in my dining room, and flashcards are spread out on the table along with board games, colored pencils, and CDs. I’m six years old, it is my second lesson, and I don’t really know the lady my parents have hired to teach me, but for some reason I feel comfortable with her and less nervous than I do around other adults. I shyly reply with the phrase she had taught me a week before, “Oui, ça va. Et toi?” “Très bien, merci, Luisa!” She responds, and we begin our lesson.

I started learning French with Bénédicte Wolfe when I was a first grader. I am now 16 and grateful to say my lessons with her have made me a fluent French speaker. Having worked in education for over 20 years, Bénédicte is not your conventional teacher – she’s a mentor, a mother, a friend. Recognized around Montecito, her daily routine involves hopping from house to house, from student to student.

Born and raised in Normandy, Bénédicte enjoyed her childhood in the French countryside until she moved to London at age 17 to study English at Hammersmith College. From London, she went to Paris, where she continued her studies and worked for a few years. Then, her desire to explore the world brought her to California in 1989. She started in San Francisco, moved to Los Angeles, and finally, in 1993, found a happy medium in Santa Barbara. “After living in many big cities,” says Bénédicte, “I wanted to be close to the ocean and surrounded by nature. I realized this was the perfect place to raise my two sons (Ben, 24, and Enzo, 22).”

The Garden Street Academy

Bénédicte starts her day teaching high schoolers at Garden Street Academy, a private K-12 school that focuses on project-based learning.

The school is located at the former St. Anthony’s seminary, next to the Mission: “I love the school, because the class size is very small, allowing every student to participate” says Bénédicte. “It’s rewarding because I can see the progress they all make.”

Yet Bénédicte’s teaching is not limited to the classroom; she regularly brings her students into the school’s kitchen to experiment with French cuisine. It is not uncommon to hear her empha-

sizing the importance of enjoying food and eating well while making tartes aux poireaux.

“My goal is to spark the curiosity of learning in my students,” says Bénédicte. “I’m fortunate because all the people I work with are so motivated by a desire to learn French.”

Her youngest client is four years old and her oldest is 88, a Casa Dorinda resident, proving that when Bénédicte is your teacher, age doesn’t matter. As for her teenage students, she helps them with their weekly homework, explaining what they did not understand in class, as well as giving them a chance for one-on-one conversation.

They have a history of getting top scores on the French AP exam, as well as impressive results from the French SAT.

French Lessons

It’s Tuesday, the day of my weekly lesson, and Bénédicte arrives at my house with a special treat: croissants!

We sit down to begin our lesson, happily eating the pastries. She pulls out a book from her bag and hands it to me.

“Bonjour Tristesse – I think you will like it.” When I study with Bénédicte, I don’t feel like I’m studying. There are no monotonous tests, no repetitive workbooks, no meaningless exercises.

Conversation is her preferred method of teaching, and it works.

We talk about everything: old French songs, the food in Normandy, interesting verbs, books we’ve read, movies we’ve seen, my future goals, her funniest stories, the drama at high school... anything, as long as there’s

no English. She helped me maintain straight As, receive a top score on the AP Exam, and she even connected me with a family in Biarritz, France.

I’ve been able to travel there every summer to stay with this family; a dream come true for every young Francophile.

One afternoon, I accompany Bénédicte to meet some of her students. Our first stop is the atelier of local artist Elizabeth Slaught. We are seated in Elizabeth’s studio, and she is showing us her new paintings.

“Bénédicte is a very special person,” Elizabeth tells me. “She’s a devoted teacher, a fabulous friend, and not to mention one-hundred-percent French with great style!” Elizabeth first met Bénédicte when her daughter and son began taking French lessons in 2006. When her children left for college, Elizabeth kept Bénédicte as her own tutor, and that is when Bénédicte’s passion for teaching really inspired her. “Bénédicte always brings new challenges when she feels that I am ready for them,” comments Elizabeth. “We translate musical lyrics, read poetry, and I keep a journal written in French, which she corrects when needed. She integrates all forms of the language to test me, and I love it.”

Since all three of us are interested in art, our conversation naturally turns to our favorite French artists: Manet,

Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse. While we are talking, Bénédicte takes notes of new words and phrases for Elizabeth to remember.

After a few hours, we say à bientôt to Elizabeth. We will meet again tonight, as it is the monthly meeting of Bénédicte’s French Club; the members of the club are a group of Montecito women who come together to speak French over a nice meal.

But for now, we make our way to the next students. They are 11-year oldtwins and refer to Bénédicte endearingly as “Madame Wolfe.” George and Madeleine Nicks, fifth graders at Laguna Blanca School, started taking lessons with Bénédicte two years ago.

“I like Madame Wolfe because she teaches at a good pace; she doesn’t go too fast or too slow,” says George.

I watch as they laugh while playing their favorite French game, “Le Jeu de L’Oie.” Next on the agenda is learning a new song, then the trio might make crêpes. “My favorite French word that Madame Wolfe taught me is chauvesouris, which is a bat” says Madeleine.

“Chauve means bald, and souris means mouse, so it literally translates to bald mouse!”

Soon, Madeleine and George’s lesson will be over, and Bénédicte will say au revoir, taking her Mary Poppins bag of treasures with her. But don’t worry – she’ll be back next week with more knowledge to share.

Music, Art, & Aging

The Alzheimer’s Factor

N

ew Year’s marks the calendar for resolutions, and for millions of Americans, healthier habits are at the top of their list. Inevitably, for many, their resolutions fail even with the best strategized, disciplined intentions.

However, for baby boomers, incorporating a heart-healthy program may be incentivized with a value-added benefit.

A growing body of evidence suggests that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain. Because our brain is comprised of a vast and rich network of blood vessels that nourish the brain, controlling risks factors for vascular disease can also provide a doubling effect.

Dr. Sandi Chapman, founder of the Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas, Dallas, notes that though “the rapid advancement of technology has us living longer than ever before, for many, our physical health has outpaced our mental capacity.” 2014 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figure indicates that one in eight of those 65 years of age will develop Alzheimer’s, and that statistic increases to nearly one in two of those who are 80 and older. Whereas the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s is advancing age, Alzheimer’s is not normal aging.

Every time we lose a key or forget a name, there is a silent fear of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The fact is, this disease will affect nearly everyone either directly or indirectly. Dementia represents the ultimate loss of both memory and normal life function. Research is indicating that the brain changes of Alzheimer’s may begin 20 years or more before symptoms appear.

“With the aging of the world’s largest generation, this disease will grow to epidemic proportions, bankrupting our social services along with individual family finances. Adding to this news, despite the rapidly growing prevalence of AD and its related costs, which are expected to dominate medical care by 2030, progress in the development of Alzheimer therapeutics has been unacceptably slow” says Dr. Ken Kosik, co-director of the Neuroscience Research Institute UCSB. He adds, “currently over five million Americans suffer from AD, and that number is expected to more than double by 2050.

There have been no new drug approvals since 2003. In total, only four FDAapproved AD drugs are on the market, and these drugs treat the symptoms of the disease but do not alter its course,” he concludes. “During this time, we are spending upwards of $200 billion per year to care for those afflicted with the disease.”

Reworking Your New Year’s Resolutions On a positive note, 30 years ago we knew very little about Alzheimer’s.

It was not until president Ronald Reagan penned his famous letter that Alzheimer’s became a household word.

Consequently since that time, science has made important technological diagnostic advancements. Most importantly, many scientists and physicians are now working together to untangle the genetic, biological, and environmental factors that – over many years – ultimately result in Alzheimer’s. This effort will hopefully bring us closer to better managing and, ultimately, preventing this debilitating disease.

Also, state programs are being put in place to assist people living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. NIH (National Institutes of Health) has increased funding, albeit a minuscule amount. The fact remains there is little positive news and until the federal government decides to get serious about Alzheimer’s Disease and fund at the billion dollar levels, as with cancer, heart, HIV/AIDS and diabetes, progress will remain excruciatingly slow.

Until that time, if you are 65 or older and reworking your New Year’s resolution, recommendation might include the following: • Maintain a heart-healthy diet, such as following a Mediterranean-type regimen that is low in saturated fats, high in omega-3 fatty acids (from fish), high in colorful vegetables and fruits, low in foods with sugar, and moderate consumption of wine • Maintain a regular physical activity program • Maintain brain and social engagement – additional studies suggest activities that are intellectually challenging and developing strong social networks – can maintain brain function better, even in the presence of brain disease • Reduce factors leading to heart and vascular disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and tobacco use • Avoid high levels of chronic stress • Get restful sleep Mr. Mars heads up an art program at the Friendship Adult Day Care Center (89 Eucalyptus Lane; 969-0859) and suggests that his program “can be just the right tonic for mental stimulation, for providing social engagement to enhance optimum cognitive brain performance, and just plain fun!” •MJ

many different situations. Doing this album with him was natural, because we both grew up during that same time period. There’s a huge unspoken understanding, which makes it a lot more fun.

And I can’t end this without asking you about playing at the Lobero. It seems to be a favorite venue for you.

I love that place. These old theaters are like musical instruments that should be preserved, and the Lobero is especially wonderful. So I’m very thankful that’s it still there.

Magical Realism in Paradise

It may seem like a regular intersection when you’re traveling on the San Marcos Pass toward the Santa Ynez Valley, but 154 & Paradise is actually a left turn. At least that’s what it represents for Gerald DiPego, the author of the new play by that name that has its world premiere at Center Stage Theater January 23-February 1.

After four decades as a screenwriter whose credits include a slew of hits (Sharky’s Machine, Phenomenon, Message in a Bottle, Instinct, Angel Eyes, and The Forgotten) DiPego has re-focused his attention to writing plays.

The transition came about gradually, after he moved up to the valley back in 1998.

“I began backing away from film and writing short stories,” DiPego said over the phone late last week.

“Then I tried a few theater pieces, and they were so easy to put on because I had a few actor friends who were happy to do it.”

But the big impetus was signing up for an acting class – the first in his life – with Peter Frisch, the executive director of the Granada Theatre during its renovation and an experienced acting teacher and director with more than 150 plays and other productions to his credit.

“I was much too shy for most of my life, too self-conscious for that kind of thing,” DiPego explained. “I observed acting all my life, but I didn’t know what I was doing when I’d read the narrations of my theater pieces. I thought maybe I should figure it out rather than just wing it. It’s been very freeing.”

It also connected him with Frisch, whose Producing Unit company is mounting 154 & Paradise with Frisch at the helm. The story – which has been described as part Twilight Zone, part Six Characters in Search of an Author, and part 12 Angry Men – concerns the co-workers, friends, and family of a man named Henry who have all been summoned to an investigation of his accidental death at the intersection of Route 154 and Paradise Road.

grills them, eliciting details about Henry’s life and death; the revelations are enticing and surprising, and eventually we learn how the characters and lives are intertwined.

For DiPego, it was the simple structure that formed the original basis for the story.

“It started with a physical image,” he explained. “I wanted to write a strong theater piece that could be staged so simply that it becomes all about the story and the people. I envisioned this semicircle of chairs facing one person who is investigating something. And while I playing around with that, there was yet another accident on the pass and I put it all together.”

But even if it’s in another genre, 154 & State doesn’t actually represent that big of a departure for DiPego, as the play’s character and setting aren’t quite what they initially seem, a magical realism premise akin to his favorite of his films, Phenomenon.

The author readily admits he’s inexorably drawn to the inexplicable.

“It really does talk to me. I’ve been fascinated by that since I was a kid. I like surprises that aren’t built into our normal world. And I like that there are no rules and no boundaries.”

Theater production does have its structure, however, even if it’s not as collaborative a medium as movies, where directors are notorious for making radical changes to a script, and even excluding the screenwriter from the set.

“There’s always a collaboration, but it’s a lot more polite on the stage,” DiPego said. “Seriously, though, there’s so much more built-in respect for the word on the stage, and Peter has been great. If he finds his actors having trouble with a speech, he’ll ask if there’s any way I can trim it, or if his idea is okay. Nothing is being changed that I don’t approve of. It’s a very good system. It’s thrilling to see my vision come to life on the stage, but he’s working his magic, too.”

The characters in 154 & Paradise undergo their own transformation as a result of their interactions, however unusual, which is another of DiPego’s favorite themes.

“It’s about the power of human contact,” he said. “Each meeting, each intersection, every day, the people we come in contact with or interact with. It’s important. It carries weight.

Sometimes we don’t realize that. We are all connected. Our contacts with other people are what I call in the play the sublime chance.”

DiPego said he hopes that audiences take away the same lesson that Henry’s colleagues – who are portrayed by some of the region’s top actors including Rich Hoag, Leslie Story, Ivy Vahanian, Bill Egan, Kathy Marden, Ian Cummings, John Brindle, Edward Romine, and

Katherine Bottoms – are forced to consider: “We’re all responsible for ourselves, but there is a lot of power in our dealings with other people that we don’t even realize or understand.

Even small, quick intersections can have a profound impact.

“I want people to think about that.

Think about tomorrow. Who are you going to meet? Who will cross your path? What will you say? What will you do?”

If it all sounds like something that would make a good movie, don’t hold your breath. DiPego has no desire to write the screenplay version of 154 & Paradise.

“I’m backing away from film and making my life more peaceful,” he said. “I may have already written my last one. My agent has a couple of scripts that might get placed. But I’m not writing movies anymore. I like writing plays as plays. And I know I’ll get to prose and short stories and novellas. But even when (making a) film is going well, there’s a lot more stuff going on that I don’t want to deal with anymore. I think I’m finished.”

SBIFF Unspools

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) turns 30 this year, and the milestone comes with the fest’s first expansion since its early years. An extra day has been added, but it also starts two days earlier, meaning opening night is this Tuesday, January 27 when the Arlington hosts the U.S. premiere of Desert Dancer, while the fest closes on Saturday, February 7, with the stateside premiere of McFarland, which stars Santa Barbara resident Kevin Costner, also at the Arlington.

In between we’ll see and hear from a slew of Oscar nominees, including eight of the 20 actors and actresses, plus directors, screenwriters, and producers of 2014’s top films and new tribute to “Artisans”, the below-theline talent that rarely get recognized.

Lots of locals are in on the act, mostly in the shorts and documentary areas, which are part of the more than 200 films that will screen over the 11 days, including at least one free screening every day, a new addition.

We’ll have much more in next week’s issue, but for now it’s time to get online and pore over the schedule to make your plans for what to see and when, and the festival is sure to be as crowded as ever in marking three decades of celebrating cinema.

Focus on Film

It’s more than prudent to put other film screenings on hiatus during SBIFF, as any movie fan – cinephile or otherwise – will be more than sated during the 11-day festival. But that doesn’t mean they won’t be screening

something right up until the eve of SBIFF. Cowspiracy, which examines the environmental impact that large-scale factory farming has on the planet, actually screens twice locally this week: 4 pm Thursday, January 22 at Antioch University’s Community Hall as part of the ongoing environmental film screening series, and again at 3:30 pm Saturday at the Montecito Association.

Five Friends, which screens Saturday at 7 pm at Center of the Heart, is a timely film about male bonding that captures the intimate relationships of a 65-year-old man and his friends as they reflect on their lives together, support each other in personal struggle, and mine the depths of meaningful friendship. Covering such subjects as success, conflict, marriage, divorce, fatherhood, children and dying, the men reveal their fears and dreams to one another in a profound exploration of vulnerability and transparency.

The Granada Theatre’s Elmer Bernstein Memorial film series curated by Paul Williams offers its second event on Monday at 7 pm. Coast Village Business Association Mixer

Next Wednesday, January 28, Coast Village Business Association (CVBA) will host a mixer at Montecito Inn. The event is open to Coast Village Road and Coast Village Circle business owners, as well as residents who live in the immediate area.

The purpose of the mixer is to kick off the re-launch of CVBA, which over the past few years has been mostly inactive, due to lack of participation. A few new business owners have recently joined the group (Katie Gaspar of Gaspar Jewelry and Dani Leholm of Dani Boy, among others), in hopes of a resurgence. “This is the opportunity for residents and business owners to meet and bring back the Association,” Leholm tells us. THURSDAY, JANUARY 22 Getting Closer – Theater director and producer Rod Lathim’s autobiographical play Unfinished Business played in both 2012 and 2013 in local theater in its original one-act format. Now Lathim, who is also the general manager at the Marjorie Luke Theater, has re-worked and expanded the story surrounding his mother’s death seven years ago and the mystical experiences he encountered as she prepared to transition to the “next realm.” As restructured, the story is now told in two acts and on three levels, including the physical plane and two parallel ones, which Lathim termed “akin to a three-layered cake.” Lathim attributes the result as coming from a desire to dig deeper having “gained the courage and confidence to tell my story in much greater depth, with greater insight.” The new version has six new characters and a lot more humor, plus new scenic, sound, and lighting designs, and new costumes. What hasn’t changed is the actress who portrays Lathim’s

late mother: Ann Dusenberry, the Montecito-based veteran of TV and film. Also in the cast are a large array of local professionals, including Brian Harwell, Jenna Scanlon, Marion Freitag, Katie Thatcher, Solomon N’Dungu, Laurel Lyle, Leslie Gangl Howe, Jay Carlander, Cali Rae Turner, Luke Mullen, Laura Mancuso, and Dillon Yuhasz. As before, the entire audience sits onstage in an intimate, U-shaped formation around the action to enhance the sense of participation. And the audience is once again encouraged to stay after the performances for a moderated discussion with the author, cast, and representatives of area agencies focused on end-of-life services, where they can share feedback as well as their own experiences surrounding the death of a loved one. The talk-backs aren’t just academic pursuits; early discussions helped develop and reshape the play. SATURDAY, JANUARY 24 RTC Takes Five – Jason Robert Brown’s two-character musical The Last Five Years received its local premiere production in April 2013 through Elements Theatre Collective’s pop-up performances. Now the timeshifting show that defies standard structural and musical conventions from a get a more prominent thrust kicking off the new year at Rubicon Theatre Company (RTC) in Ventura. Brown is a three-time Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist (Parade, The Bridges of Madison County), with a long association with RTC. The story traces the relationship between Cathy, an aspiring actress, and Jamie, a successful novelist, over the course of five years, with the device that Jamie’s story move forward in time while Cathy’s is told simultaneously in reverse chronological order. The structure mirrors the relationship, as the pop musical about the two twentysomething New Yorkers rises and ebbs as they fall in love and try to hold on to each other when life leads them in opposite directions; the timeline intersects only on their fated wedding day. Louis Pardo, whose credits include the national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, co-stars with Ashley Fox Linton, who has portrayed Glinda in the Broadway national tour of Wicked and Cosette in Les Misérables. Rubicon resident artist Stephanie A. Coltrin, who won an Ovation Award for Miss Saigon in Los Angeles, directs. “(The musical’s) ingenious construct allows us to experience the highs and lows of crucial points of the marriage, so that we eventually understand what the characters themselves don’t realize,” Coltrin states in a press release. “That these two people were never in the same place to begin with.” Rubicon’s timing couldn’t be more perfect, as the movie version of The Last Five Years, starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick, is slated to open – perhaps ironically? – on Valentine’s Day. SUNDAY, JANUARY 25 He’s No Edsel – A terrific two days for fans of the electric guitar in all of its guises from folk to inventive jazz begins tonight with the return of Robben Ford, the Ojaibased five-time Grammy nominee who can seemingly do almost anything he wants with the instrument. (Bill Frisell brings his Guitar in the Space Age project to the Lobero tomorrow night; see my interview in On Entertainment). Ford hasn’t achieved the household name status he deserves, but the roster of artists he’s plays with is as impressive as it is diverse: Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan, John Mayall, Greg Allman, Keb’ Mo’, Larry Carlton, Mavis Staples, and Brad Paisley, among many others. In the 1970s alone, he joined The L.A. Express for Joni Mitchell tour for her legendary Court and Spark album, played alongside George Harrison on the Dark Horse tour, and made his first solo recording, The Inside Story, with a group of musicians who went on to become the Yellowjackets. In his career as a bandleader, Ford has taken on jazz, country (last year’s A Day In Nashville album) and rock, but has favored the blues, a genre he interprets widely, so it’s appropriate that tonight’s appearance at SOhO is with his current Ford Blues Band. SATURDAY, JANUARY 24 Winter Wine-down – The California Wine Festival’s Winter Wine Classic 2015 returns to the Fess Parker DoubleTree Resort for a fourth year of festivities, during which locals and visitors get a chance in the off-season to sample nearly 100 classic California wines from some of the more elite winemaking masters in the state.

The event, moved to Saturday evening this year, will include famous names from the wine world such as Bernardus Winery, Charles Krug, Heitz Wine Cellars, Chalk Hill, and PEJU, as well as artisan goldmedal producers Ahnfeldt, Beckmen, Grassini, and Tablas Creek, all of whom will pour their ultra-premium wines. MONDAY, JANUARY 26 Sax Appeal – The all-female sax quartet (actually there’s five if you count the drummer, who’s a man) may have started off as the Billy Tipton Memorial Sax Quartet out of tribute to the Big Band saxophonist and pianist who was discovered after death to be a woman who had lived as a man for more than 50 years to climb the male-dominated world of jazz. But there’s no gimmicks now, as the Tiptons – they shortened the name following a six-year hiatus in 2002 – as the group expertly plies genres from horn section jazz to gospel, bluegrass, New Orleans-style second line, funk, and more with a sound that supported 10 recordings (though it has been more than six years since the last one.) The energy is infectious and the musician a marvel as the ladies perform original compositions and clever covers both popular and obscure. Danny Chang, who created Cirque Ziva in 2011 as a theatrically elaborate show specifically for the American market. On the March Montecito TV talk-show titan Oprah Winfrey and other stars from the movie Selma marched with hundreds at the weekend ahead of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to recall the civil rights struggles in the 1960s.

Oprah, who co-produced the film with actor Brad Pitt, helped lead the march with the movie’s director, Ava DuVernay, actor David Oyelowo, who portrayed King in the movie, and rapper Common.

They and others marched from Selma City Hall to the city’s Edmund Pettus Bridge, where civil rights protesters were beaten and tear-gassed by officers in 1965.

“Every single person who was on that bridge is a hero,” Oprah told the marchers before they walked up to the bridge as the sun was going down over the Alabama River.

She said they were seeking to remember King “as an idea.” “Selma was an idea and what can happen with strategy, with discipline, and with love.”

The new film chronicles the campaign leading up to the historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and the subsequent passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Law enforcement officers used clubs and tear gas on March 7, 1965 – Bloody Sunday – to rout marchers intent on walking some 50 miles to Montgomery, the state capital, to seek rights for blacks to register to vote.

Words Play Richard Yongjae O’Neill was the undoubted star of Camerata Pacifica’s concert at the Music Academy of the West’s Hahn Hall when he led other members of the popular chamber group in 39-year-old Chinese composer Huang Ruo’s unique 30-minute work In Other Words.

The South Korean violist, who has been nominated for a Grammy and appeared with many of the world’s

major orchestras, also sang during the piece, which premiered three years ago in Los Angeles.

Flutist and founder Adrian Spence, also played a didgeridoo, a 1,500 year-old instrument used by the Aborigines in Australia, accompanied by oboist Nicholas Daniel, José Franch-Ballester on clarinet, Ani Aznavoorian on cello, violinists Paul Huang and Agnes Gottschewski, Tim Eckert on double bass, and the multi-talented Ji Hye Jung on percussion.

The musicians also left the stage to take their instruments to the side aisles for the vibrant intensive work inspired by Chinese folk music and a number of other elements, described by the composer as “dimensionalism.”

“We’re ranked number one in the country,” he reports.

Of the 11 kids on the team, eight of them are Montecito residents or students, Rottman tells us. “Many of them are younger than the competition they face; it’s a true Goliath victory,” said Rottman, who was an All-American outside hitter at UCSB in 1987-88 and led the Gauchos to the NCAA finals in ’88. The club was established three years ago, in an effort to consolidate local talent, teach proper fundamentals, compete with – and beat – the best teams in the country. In the inaugural season, Westmont College helped launch the club by providing much-needed practice time in their gymnasium. Since then, the club has expanded, with three teams (ages 12, 14, 16). “We are always looking for fresh talent, and the club provides a steady pipeline of volleyball talent to local high schools,” Rottman explained. “They end up ready to go as incoming freshman.”
