Setting the Record Straight

I

n response to Hillary Hauser’s opinion piece (“On the Water Front” MJ #20/39) regarding wastewater recycling, residents should be aware that the Montecito Water District has a thorough understanding of wastewater as a non-potable water supply and has done numerous studies and reports on recycled water use in Montecito. To understand the facts regarding recycled water, the District asks that you go to its website, www.montecitowater.com and read the most recent water recycling report. This study, prepared by the staffs of the Montecito Water District and the Montecito Sanitary District, will allow you to understand the costs and benefits of creating a water recycling system for Montecito.

Ms Hauser and Heal the Ocean (HTO) are passionate about their mission and have led and completed successful programs fulfilling their goal of improving and protecting the ocean environment; however, HTO is an environmental organization, not a water purveyor. As the area’s water purveyor, the District has water use records over many years and has been delivering water to customers since the early 1920s. Studies/reports on bringing recycled water to Montecito customers have not been favorable due to economics and the limited number of customers who would legally qualify for the use of recycled water.

Facts Regarding Recycled Water for Montecito

Recycled wastewater would serve less than one percent of the District’s customer base. Studies completed in 1991 and 2013, followed by the joint Water District and Sanitary District report in 2014, clearly identify the benefits and challenges of developing a recycled water system for Montecito. Recycled water is used for specific types of landscape irrigation; for Montecito, it could include the two private golf courses, a park, schools, county and Caltrans right-of ways, the Music Academy, cemetery, and possibly two resort hotels. Recycled water can also be used by agricultural customers, but more advanced treatment is required.

Recycled water, when used for landscape irrigation by this legally select group of users, conserves a similar amount of the District’s drinking (potable) water. For the District, there is a potential demand for up to 300 acre feet (AF) of recycled landscape irrigation water annually based on 2012 water use. The 300 AF estimate does not consider possible rainfall, potable water use or recent significant reductions in water use by qualified customers.

As an example, Ms Hauser indicated that one such customer, the cemetery, could save the District 138 AF of water annually by using recycled water.

Actual water use by the cemetery in 2012 was less than 40 AF and, contrary to Ms Hauser’s assertion, this customer is not the District’s highest irrigation user.

Our agricultural customers could also qualify for the use of recycled water.

The District currently has 37 agricultural accounts, and in 2012 their aggregate water demand was 441 AF (including their potable water use). In order to deliver recycled water to agricultural customers who grow crops for human consumption, Montecito Sanitary District’s wastewater treatment facility would require costly advanced tertiary treatment upgrades. In addition, a large financial investment in a new non-potable water distribution system would be required. Even then, not all agricultural customers could be served by a recycled water distribution system, as many of these customers are outside economic and practical reach of such a system.

The question before the Water District Board of Directors and its customers is whether we are willing to invest more than $15 million to provide recycled water service to less than one percent of the customers when the financial commitment to recycling may place at risk the ability of the District to deliver new potable water supplies to all its customers. Such policy decisions need to be based on priorities and benefit. Recycled water studies/reports show that recycled water can be considered a potential water supply; but the benefit was not considered sufficient to justify the expense of large-scale development of a recycled water system for the community. The preliminary studies show that the amortized cost of recycled irrigation water for a limited number of customers would approximate the cost of desalinated drinking water for all!

wish to nominate Mike Clark of the Montecito Water District (MWD) for the “Outstanding Water Conservation Person” in response to your invitation for such nominations.

A number of months ago, I contacted MWD for information on how best to conserve water usage. In response, I was contacted by Mike Clark, MWD’s water conservation specialist. He came to our home (twice) and reviewed with me our then current water usage and irrigation system. He provided specific proposals as to the conservation-minded settings of our irrigation controller, a plan to meet the needs of the different zones of plantings while using less water. He also explained how to reduce the size of our then existing water meter, which would result in an immediate appreciable monthly cost savings regardless of the amount of water used. Finally, he suggested the use of mulch around the property, particularly beneath our avocado grove.

I implemented all his suggestions and succeeded in reducing our water consumption level far more than enough to merely stay within our monthly allotment. As a further service, he has followed up with us on a monthly basis, noting our monthly consumption usage with constructive additional suggestions for conservation purposes. For all these reasons, I nominate him. Given his position with the MWD, he has a broad impact throughout the community helping customers realize significant monetary savings and, more importantly, water conservation.

A Great Investment

As a long-time resident of Montecito and member of the Montecito Association and current member of the Montecito Union School Board of Trustees (MUS), I am keenly aware of the factors that have made and preserve the unique quality of life here. These include being very aware of our neighbors and the community when making impactful decisions.

I am also aware as a parent/grandparent of children who attended or are attending MUS and who received and are receiving the best elementary education that can be found

almost anywhere. But MUS is in need of an upgrade of its facilities. The final plan for the upgrading has been a two-and-a-half process of working the issues with MUS neighbors, the community, and the educational needs of MUS. Back in 1926-27, when the architectural plan for Montecito Union School moved from paper to a new school facility, the building reflected a standard school design for the time.

The entry was placed in the center of two single-story wings that contained all the classrooms. Walking farther through the entrance would bring you to an auditorium, which provided for all-school activities as presentations, ceremonies, and graduations.

Beneath the wing to the south, due to the decline in elevation that marks Montecito’s topography, the plan included a cafeteria to ensure a proper nutritional lunch for those children whose parents so desired and a place for all students to eat while protected from the elements.

The MUS of 1926-27 was designed for a maximum student body of around 200 students and like our Montecito community, MUS has grown in the last 80+ years. As enrollments of students increased, academic classrooms were added beginning in the 1960s, again in the 1990s, and again in the early 2000s. In fact, at more than 460 students, MUS today has more than doubled its original maximum enrollment.

While the building of academic classrooms generally kept pace with student population increases, two integral parts of the original plan fell aside: the cafeteria and the auditorium.

The cafeteria became entirely inadequate within a few decades and had to be closed (it is now used as a classroom). It would be virtually impossible to renovate the old cafeteria in the original building in order to meet the needs of the current number of students for both food service and to provide a suitable place to sit down and eat lunch. Even more daunting are the federal, state, and county layers of laws and ordinances that have been enacted since 1926-27 that define proper food service, safety, and accessibility for all to the facility.

In fact, at the same time the existing cafeteria cannot serve as a food service facility, various legal mandates now require that MUS provide just that! This is a problem in search of a solution.

Currently, only with a permit that must be renewed annually, the “lunch truck” provides adequate lunches.

However, the food is not fresh and has been described as “just nutritious.” More significantly, the current eating area for both “lunch truck” and home-provided lunches is out in

the open, which frequently requires the daily erection of temporary shade shelters, so that children will not have to sit and eat in what are scorching conditions. Ironically, as the academic classrooms were built the play/ eating areas shrank. On rainy days (some day!), you will find children sitting in classrooms and the enclosed halls on the floors to get out of the elements. It must be noted that MUS, in attempting to improve conditions for children to eat their lunch, has been cited several times for not providing proper food serving facilities.

The auditorium was quickly unable to handle any school-wide activities, especially the kind of activities that enrich an academic experience with that all-important sense of belonging.

Originally designed for a maximum student body size of around 200, there is no way to have a schoolwide assembly with a present student body of more than 460 students. In fact, because of space limitations, last week an assembly was held with a guest speaker for only grades four through six that dealt with the very important topic of (anti) “Bullying.”

To accommodate less than half of the present student body, all seats had to be removed from the auditorium and the children had to be seated on the floor... and it was hot and crowded.

Only half of our children were able to participate. MUS needs a place to bring its children together as a student body.

The proposed cafeteria/multi-purpose building being currently discussed as part of a school improvement effort will solve the important issues of regaining a suitable eating area; serving fresh, nutritious food with access to all; and regaining a facility that could bring students together as a school. It would meet all requirements of the federal, state, and county regulations that require proper facilities including issues of universal accessibility. Finally, our students would have an area in the form of the lower terraces where they could sit and eat lunch or, on days of bad weather, could eat inside the new cafeteria.

The same cafeteria/multi-purpose building could also provide the all important school-wide assembly area when used in conjunction with the lower terraces. Graduations and the occasional and spirit building schoolwide assemblies could re-enter our students’ experience.

It has justly been pointed out that all of this costs money. True. However, we are living in one of the most affluent areas in the State of California. As an individual homeowner if I take the Proposition 13 valuation of my property, divide that number by 100,000

Statement Regarding 101 Widening Project

Why I Oppose the 101 Widening Project As Is

A

fter reading last week’s “My Take” column by Bob Hazard regarding the Highway 101 widening, an old joke came to mind. Question: “What is the difference between Ignorance and apathy?” Answer: “I don’t know and I don’t care.”

No wonder there’s still so much confusion about the 101 Widening Project; if I only had to rely on this article, I’d be scratching my head as well.

Before I respond to the misinformation and speculation as to why I oppose the current 101 project, I must discuss the series of events following the distribution of an opinion piece penned by councilmember Bendy White and myself.

On September 30 and October 1, Councilmember White and I emailed an opinion piece to the media. Both the Santa Barbara Independent and Noozhawk published the piece on October 2, and the Santa Barbara News-Press published it on October 5.

I’m thankful to those three media outlets. As is common, all three outlets chose their own headline. Unfortunately, the News-Press omitted Councilmember White’s name from the byline. I appreciate that [its staff] immediately apologized and wrote a correction one day later.

More than one week after Councilmember White and I sent the original opinion piece to the MJ (which it decided not to print), Mr. Hazard published his opinion piece. In it, he accuses me of inappropriately speaking on behalf of the City of Santa Barbara because of the use of the word “we.”

For Mr. Hazard to make this accusation, he either managed to not read the Independent, Noozhawk, the correction in the News-Press, and even the very emails sent to the Montecito Journal a week prior, or he intentionally focuses only on the News-Press piece that mistakenly omitted Councilmember White’s name. While I want to give Mr. Hazard the benefit of the doubt, I do note that his editorial actually quotes from the same Santa Barbara Independent edition that published Councilmember White’s and my opinion piece.

It’s important that MJ readers know Councilmember White and I wrote and distributed the opinion piece after the legal filing deadline passed to challenge the 101 EIR [Environmental Impact Report]. The piece speaks on behalf of ourselves, and the pronoun “we” clearly refers to Councilmember White and myself.

No “Designated” Funds Set Aside

In addition to pronoun issues, Mr. Hazard makes some inaccurate statements regarding the project. He states, “The widening of the 101 to three lanes increases traffic flows and shortens commute times.” However, a study initiated by Caltrans shows the current design will actually increase travel time for northbound travelers through the City of Santa Barbara. This is not, as Mr. Hazard implies, something that I fabricated; it is a study done by a reputable engineering firm. That is because there is a very large number of Santa Barbara residents commuting from their homes to jobs in Goleta simultaneously with more Ventura commuters (resulting from a widened 101) entering the City, new congestion forms from Garden through Patterson – hence commute times increase. This traffic spills onto city streets, causing even more congestion.

Further, Mr. Hazard claims, “a lawsuit against Caltrans could convince Caltrans to shift its scarce and competitive state and federal transportation funding away from widening the 101...”. I’ve heard this argument before; but the fact is Caltrans has not designated or even promised any state or federal dollars for this project.

The only allocated funds come from Santa Barbara County taxpayers – specifically Measure A, local gas tax money, and STIP funds. The funds from the latter two sources would otherwise be spent on local roads. Worse, additional local funds will likely have to be used for “parallel” projects that should have been included as mitigations if the Project was properly designed.

In short, moving forward with the 101 Project as is means we will starve South Coast communities of funding for local street maintenance and capital improvements to subsidize a poorly designed Caltrans Project. I know of no other community making this type of sacrifice.

My opposition isn’t as Mr. Hazard claims, “as leverage to force [blackmail] Caltrans...” it is about protecting the South Coast. I’ve raised these issues for more than two years. In addition, the Santa Barbara City Planning Commission has repeatedly asked Caltrans to recirculate the EIR. Unfortunately, the inadequate 101 EIR is not a joke, but a real document, with real negative impacts on us all. I do know the details about this project, and I do care about what’s at stake. I hope readers will take the time to study the impacts of this project and speak out.

I

t’s been relatively quiet these last nine months regarding the 101-widening project, but that is about to change. One month ago, Caltrans certified the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) they produced, and this document has subsequently been challenged in court.

We fully encourage and will be publicly supporting private parties who have filed lawsuits. The City of Santa Barbara is not a party to a lawsuit.

We are dismayed that information pertaining to recent closed sessions apparently was leaked to the press and others. At the very least, this appears to be a breach of ethics. Worse, during the last two weeks, statements made in writing via a letter to City Hall, and verbally by SBCAG staff basically threatened the city by saying if the council dare challenge the EIR, then perhaps important mitigations our residents deserve will never get funded.

We know that, for some, our position is frustrating. We’ve heard more than once “just build it.” Our decision to speak out publicly about the inadequacies of this EIR is due to our fundamental sense of fairness.

This project as proposed is unfair to our constituents in the City of Santa Barbara, it is unfair to county taxpayers, it is unfair to residents of the South Coast and it is unfair to the commuters who use Highway 101.

In September 2013, the Santa Barbara City Planning Commission held a public hearing on the 101 Project and unanimously voted to send a letter to Caltrans that included the statement, “Based on the inadequacy of the Draft EIR, we anticipate that Caltrans’ responses to comments will result in the disclosure of significant new information necessitating recirculation of a revised Draft EIR to allow for meaningful public review and comment.”

Since then, Caltrans has continued to change the project, including the Cabrillo interchange, in such a substantial way that a normal EIR process would require recirculation. But Caltrans, rather than working as a true partner to the local community, refused to do so.

Furthermore, according to Caltrans’ own analysis, the project as currently designed will cause delays and backups on the 101-northbound from Garden Street all the way to Patterson Avenue. This will result in increased congestion on City streets, further reducing our ability to adequately maintain our infrastructure and provide new alternative transportation options.

The current 101 widening in Ventura County was paid for entirely with state and federal dollars, and included needed bike path and pedestrian amenities as part of the project. Contrast that to the widening project in Santa Barbara County. Not only are county residents paying $140 million off the top from the 2008 Measure A half-cent sales tax, but the South Coast communities of Goleta, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, and the unincorporated areas are also sacrificing an annual $13 million that used to be for local street maintenance and repairs. Now through at least 2040, 100 percent of that money is diverted to the 101 project. The Measure A ballot language never said that 100 percent of South Coast gas tax funds would be sacrificed.

It gets worse if the project moves forward as proposed; more and more of what the voters thought Measure A would fund over 30 years – local street repair, safe-routes-to-school funding, bike and pedestrian improvements to name a few – is actually going to be siphoned off to pay for necessary components of the project that should have been included but are not.

In addition, applications for funding toward components we know are necessary, specifically replacing the Union Pacific Bridge and creating the Olive Mill Roundabout, will now compete with other local projects.

Caltrans, in response to these needed mitigations: trust us. According to Caltrans, mitigations can be done as “parallel projects,” yet they offer zero funding – which means if local communities want the mitigations, we’re going to be stuck footing the bill.

It would be nice to have a level of trust that everything will all somehow work out; however, we believe that past performance is indicative of future behavior. One only needs to remember that the current State Street/101 underpass is designed the way it is because Santa Barbara residents fought with Caltrans, who insisted for years on an elevated freeway over the city, totally cutting our now-vibrant downtown core in half. History has shown us that it is in our best interest to fight for good projects and oppose bad ones.

Caltrans makes a mockery of not only the South Coast, but of the entire California Environmental Quality Act process. How can we require private projects to abide by the requirements of CEQA when Caltrans, a state agency, openly violates it? Until Caltrans comes to the community and actually •MJ works as a true “partner,” we have to oppose this project.

Montecito Association Backs MUS Project

A

fter a lengthy, standing-room-only meeting of the Montecito Association Board of Directors earlier this week, the board voted to support Montecito Union School’s remodel project. Two board members voted against the action, including president Ted Urschel and former president Dick Nordlund.

The decision was made after dozens of members of the audience, which included school board members, neighbors, teachers, parents, and district residents, gave their opinion on the proposed plans, which call for modernization of current buildings, ADA compliance, redesign of the parking lots and traffic pattern, a new five-classroom building, a new cafeteria structure and outdoor amphitheater space, and new district and facilities offices. The project is expected to cost taxpayers $27,150,000, via bond Measure Q, which is on the November 4 ballot.

The majority of the board agreed to

support the project for the betterment of the community, with the conditions that superintendent Tammy Murphy and her staff would maintain an ongoing dialogue with neighbors who are unhappy with the scope of the project.

The MA board also asked that the use of the new cafeteria/multipurpose building be restricted to only school uses, in an effort to shield neighbors from additional noise outside of school hours.

The majority of the public speakers during the meeting spoke in favor of the project, including teachers who told of the dire need for upgrades to the campus. “We desperately need a multipurpose room, cafeteria, whatever you want to call it,” said retired teacher Marilyn Bachman, who taught at the school for 27 years and continues to substitute. Teacher Stacy Allison, who teaches in one of the original classrooms, said, “The school

t’s pretty amazing that a little seaside town like Santa Barbara has its own ballet company and it is celebrating its emerald anniversary – that would be 20 years! In honor of this landmark occasion, State Street Ballet held a gala at the Four Season’s Biltmore that began with a lively cocktail reception in the garden with Chris Fossek entertaining on the Spanish guitar. The drink of the evening was the emerald martini. I don’t know what was in it, but it practically glowed in the dark.

Among those chatting were honorees Leni Fe Bland, Milly, and Wayne Colahan, Jill and Ron Dexter, Margo and Robert Feinberg, Lillian Lovelace, Sara Miller McCune, Tim Mikel, and Anne and Michael Towbes. Kate and Brooks Firestone were also honorees but were traveling, and Ana Zafferis was named in memoriam. These are the folks who were there supporting in the beginning.

The United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara held its 10th annual community breakfast at Fess Parker DoubleTree Resort and it was all about the kids. TV anchor Paula Lopez applauded, “I’m so impressed with all of you morning people.” She does late night news. Paula is a product of the west side Boys & Girls Club. “I was so shy, my teacher recommended that my folks send me there. Even though we couldn’t afford it, I could go (because of scholarships). I tried out for a theatre production and got the part of the narrator.” Before that she had been afraid to talk in front of people. Who would know? As she said, “Kids are what you tell them they are.” Boys & Girls Clubs are filled with positive responses.

Corporation, Jeff Henley. Speaking of success, two years ago he gave $50 million to his alma mater UCSB’s engineering department. Jeff had a single mom and went to Boys & Girls Club in La Habra in the 1950s. The clubs take children kindergarten through high school. As Jeff said, “We have doubled the number of clubs in the last 15 years. Some are operated out of schools. In the old days, it was more swim and gym. Now there are richer programs that help with homework to give the kids a chance to be successful.” More and more need help, as families seem to be disintegrating.

One of the greatest basketball coaches in America, Ben Howland remembered his childhood at the Goleta Boys & Girls Club. “I was eight when I saw my first gym there.” He says kids look up to the older ones, and we need good role models. Ben still remembers many of his friends from those days, one who has since won a Nobel Prize in science. “Boys & Girls Clubs will always be one of the biggest parts of my life.”

Single mom Melissa Cohen had us all in tears (she was, too) when she said how the Boys & Girls Club here saved her life when she was juggling childcare and her job. To know that

Wine Down

“Like a fine wine, friendship gets better with age,” so says Friendship Center’s executive director Heidi Holly. The center has been around for 38 years and Holly has been there

nearly 30. Instead of TGIF (thank God it’s Friday), Friendship Center has its own version called a Wine Down.

Ten local wineries and Surf Brewery were in the lovely courtyard to pour tastes for all the guests. Spices N Rice Catering kept our tummies full, and Montecito Jazz Project kept our ears buzzing with good sounds. There were wine baskets to bid on and art for sale. The art and sculptures are the result of instructor Dean Mars donating his time each week to teach Friendship’s attendees.

Board president Dana VanderMey remembered, “In 1981, my daughter came home from preschool across the street, saying she spent time with the grandmas and grandpas. Now I bring my grandchildren to spend time with them.” When she compared other

facilities that day care for aging and dependent adults, none compared to Friendship Center.

United Way CEO Paul Didier told us, “I helped start Friendship Center many years ago, and I was my mom’s caregiver for 12 years. She was at the Center for 10 years, and I can’t tell you how much that meant.” He recalled how busy his family was with not much time to give to cooking. At the center, his mom even got breakfast plus lunch and a snack before being returned home. “That was an a-ha moment.”

Resident Abe Powell agreed, commenting that student safety should not be taken lightly.

Several neighbors voiced concern over the project, saying both their property values and quality of life would decrease due to noise, cafeteria smells, aesthetics, and more. Adjoining neighbor Judy Blankenship called into question the need for the cafeteria in the first place and voiced concern that the safety work slated for the main school building is not part of the first phase of the project. Murphy explained parking and traffic issues will be tackled first, followed by the new, five-classroom building, so that the students will have somewhere to go before the old building is redone.

“It’s not as simple to say we are putting off safety until the last phase,” Murphy said. “We have a plan so as to disrupt the children’s education as little as possible.”

Engineer Ed Moreland spoke on the subject of environmental impacts, and said his company, Rincon Consultants, has been hired to study the project.

Moreland said it was not yet clear if the project would require a full EIR (Environmental Impact Report) or a mitigated negative declaration. “The CEQA studies cannot be finished until the project is further along,” he said.

School board member Deb Fuss said the contentious cafeteria portion of the project has been in the works since a strategic plan was drafted in 2007.

“This did not come out of nowhere,” she said. “The school is well overdue for an overhaul, and seventy-one percent of what we are asking for are life and safety issues.” School board member Peter van Duinwyk added that the plan has been changed multiple times to correct issues brought up by both neighbors and the Montecito Association Land Use Committee.

Murphy told the group of about 70 people that she and her team have tried to balance the needs of the school with the principles of the Montecito Community Plan. “We really do value

Maison K manager Marie-Christine Wolseley and owner Kimberly Phillips. The longtime Montecito shop has moved back to its original location.

Maison K has returned to its original home at 1253 Coast Village Road (former home of Dressed & Ready). “We are happy to be back!” says owner Kimberly Phillips, who founded the shop in 2003.

The last five years, Phillips ran the store out of the two-story Costa Villa building at 1159 Coast Village Road (former home of Circa and Letter Perfect), and when her lease was up, she decided to come back to the original location, near Jeannine’s, J. McLaughlin, CosBar, and new jeweler Ara (to be open in the next few weeks). “Our customers are thrilled we are back on this part of the street,” Phillips told us earlier this week.

Phillips, who also founded the Montecito accessory shop Lily in 2002, has become known for her eclectic style and unique offerings at Maison K, including a broad range of home furnishings, decorative accessories, gifts, jewelry, and style accessories.

She goes on buying trips several times a year, to Argentina, Uzbekistan, Italy, France, and other international locations to replenish the aesthetically pleasing store. She also carries domestic and local artisan items.

Backyard Bounty

On October 10, volunteers from San Marcos High School and Santa Barbara City College descended on Casa del Herrero in Montecito to harvest pineapple guavas, citrus, and

apples for Santa Barbara Foodbank.

The group harvested 878 pounds of fruit from about half of Casa’s orchard; the event was a precursor to Foodbank’s Backyard Bounty Day, scheduled for later this month, in which Santa Barbara and Montecito residents and volunteers will harvest even more fruit from estates, ranches, and backyards in our area.

The Backyard Bounty Program was launched in October 2007, and this year’s event is serving as a sort of “re-birth” of the program, said coordinator Niles Brinton. During the early years of the program, volunteers harvested 500,000 pounds of produce from private properties in Carpinteria, Montecito, Santa Barbara, and Goleta.

on Meacham, presidential historian, examined the political lives of two of the United States’ greatest presidents at a sold-out, outdoor luncheon with 280 people October 10 at the Fess Parker – A DoubleTree Resort by Hilton. The talk, “The Moral and Ethical Leadership of Jefferson and Jackson,” launched Westmont’s year-long series on Moral and Ethical Leadership in the American Presidency, sponsored by the Mosher Center for Moral and Ethical Leadership.

“I am thrilled that you have undertaken this immensely wonderful, important project,” Meacham said. “I find that again and again, no matter what the subject is, we return to the question of leadership. Moral leadership is, in fact, the central task of our presidents when it’s done correctly.”

Meacham explored the character of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson, as well as the tasks and challenges they faced.

“When you realize that these presidents are people too, that they are not God-like, Zeus-like figures, but human beings who did great things, then you yourself as a flawed person, could also, perhaps do great things,” Meacham said. “One of the points of biography is not to look up worshipfully or look down condescendingly, but to look at people in the eye. And when you see them in the eye, you see them and judge them for what they were – and in that sense the biography becomes illuminating and inspirational.”

Jefferson, who wanted to be seen as a philosopher, knew that politics are a messy and contentious business. “On the best of days, if you get 55 percent of people on your side, you are a wildly successful politician,” Meacham said. “That still means on your best day, 45 percent of the people are against you. Ronald Reagan, whose ranch is not far from here, is the last president to win extraordinary popular vote, and he still had 44-45 percent of the country who disapproved of him to the very end.”

Jefferson, who was in political office for 37 of 40 years, was a working politician who loved the great contest of politics. “Our greatest presidents, the ones who we revere and celebrate down the years, are the ones who seemed to actually want to be there,” Meacham said. “Ronald Reagan wanted to be there. Bill Clinton wanted to be there. He still wants to be there. He

may be back.”

Jackson believed that the United States was one great family that could stand on its own and withstand any global pressures if it stayed together.

“Arguments would rage, there would be great fights, but the country had to stand as a united house,” Meacham said, paraphrasing Jackson.

In 1832, when South Carolina passed the Doctrine of Nullification, declaring that a state could pick and choose which laws it wanted to follow, Jackson reacted viciously and violently.

“Jackson did this because he saw his moral leadership, his moral obligation to preserve the inheritance that had been given to him,” Meacham said. “To honor the sacrifice of his own family and to stand in the line with Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Adams and take his stand in the arena.

“He believed that we would argue, we would fight, we would disagree, but we had to do it under the same roof. To tear apart the country would invite European adventurism and encourage the Spanish, French, and British to attempt, once again, to recolonize and seek influence.”

In concluding, Meacham said the nation was an experiment to both Jefferson and Jackson, but one that could not under any circumstances be allowed to fail. “Their moral insight,” Meacham said, “was that as, Jefferson put it, ‘The United States was the world’s best hope.’ They devoted their lives to creating, preserving, and protecting a nation-state in which the ideals of the Revolution could take their stand in the long history of the world.

“They were imperfect. They defended slavery. They were architects and executioners of Native American people. They thought rather too much of themselves. And from a philosophical point of view, they were hopelessly hypocritical, but they were not primarily – or in Jackson’s case – even secondarily, philosophers. They were politicians. Public men dedicated to the public business with all its inherent limitations. And I would submit that we should thank God that they were.”

Meacham, one of America’s most prominent public intellectuals, is a Pulitzer Prize winner and contributing editor at Time magazine.

’m about as “country” as Colin Powell is “ghetto,” but country music truly warms my cockles (can I say that in a family publication?. I spent the first 11 years of my life (19531966) in Southington, Connecticut, where I honed my math skills, and where Merle Haggard was more foreign than Nikita Khrushchev.

But I was lucky. I had a mother who was a transplant from another planet –New Mexico. She didn’t bring much with her when my father hauled Mom back to his home state, but she managed to carry a handful of country-western albums and, being her only lifeline to home, she wore those suckers out. To this day, I can’t hear a Patsy Cline song without having an urge to polish furniture with lemon Pledge or light up a Pall Mall.

While my friends’ parents were listening to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, I was being saturated with Hank Snow, Hank Williams, and Hank Thompson. I thought every male west of the Mississippi was named Hank.

When my 7th grade class took a field trip to Boston, we must have sung Herman’s Hermits “Henry the Eighth” 10 times on the bus ride.

When I suggested we change it up a bit and sing Burl Ives’s “A Little Bitty Tear Let Me Down,” the whole class looked at me like I just offered them a plug of tobbacy.

comes down to lyrics. If you take a situation – let’s say a spouse leaving – and you write a song in the three most popular music categories, rock, rap, and country, the lyrics will be as different as Eddie Money, 50 Cent, and Johnny Paycheck.

For example, rock ‘n’ roll lyrics might be “Peace, love, and smoking banana peels ain’t the same without you.”

Rap lyrics could be “Dis burnt, Squallie! I be ‘730’, Boo. No butta, no grind, no hittin’ the kitten.”

Country music handles the same sensitive situation this away: “I’m so miserable without you, it’s like having you here.”

C&W songs are simple, direct, and on occasion funnier than Grandma tokin’ on the hookah at your wedding.

Here are my top 10 (I’m not making these up) country song titles: 1. “ I Wouldn’t Take Her To a Dog Fight Because I’m Afraid She’d Win” 2. “ You’re The Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly” 3. “ Mama Get the Hammer, There’s a Fly on Papa’s Head” 4. “ When We Get Back to the Farm, That’s When We Really Go to Town” 5. “ I Still Miss You Baby, But My Aim’s Gettin’ Better” 6. “ Get Your Tongue Out of My Mouth, I’m Kissing You Goodbye” 7. “ If The Phone Don’t Ring, You’ll Know It’s Me” 8. “ If I Can’t Be Number One in Your Life, Then Number Two On You” 9. “ I Don’t Know Whether to Kill Myself or Go Bowling” 10. And, my wife Lora’s favorite, “If I Shot You When I Wanted To, I’d Be Out By Now” To my mom’s dismay, rock ‘n’ roll eventually became my passion, causing both Mom and Dad to declare that I had van Gogh’s ear for music.

But I still listen to C&W on occasion.

You might say country music brings me back to my Connecticut Yankee roots. As another man who isn’t very country, Sir Elton John, once sang, “It’s good old country comfort in my bones. Just the sweetest sound my ears have ever known.”

All these funds will be invested in the physical enhancement of MUS and ultimately for the enhancement of the education of the children of our community. It almost goes without saying that polishing the gem that is MUS will benefit each and every homeowner in Montecito. What better investment in the future can we make?

Why the Move?

Way back in 1991, Montecito ratepayers approved connecting to the State Water Project (SWP). It seemed like a good deal, after all: for an investment of $270 million, we were guaranteed long-term water security.

Unhappily, things didn’t turn out as promised.

The Central Coast hook-up ended up costing $1.76 billion, not $270 million. And as we all know, our water supplies are anything but secure.

This year, we’re only receiving five percent of our allotted 3,000 acre-feet of SWP water. But water shortfalls or not, we must continue to service our debt – almost $6 million a year, regardless of deliveries.

Drought compounds the financial pressures. With less water to sell, the Montecito Water District brings in less revenue. So what happens when the district’s revenue shortfall becomes critical? The folks who peddled the revenue bonds to support our share of the SWP hook-up planned for that contingency, though they took no great pains to publicize it.

Here’s the deal: In the event of a default, the SWP agreements state that the contractors – in our case, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors sitting as the Santa Barbara Flood Control and Water Conservation District – must make up the defaulted amount by raising our property taxes.

We are perilously close to just such a scenario. Compounding the problem is the State’s determination to extend SWP contracts for another 50 years. That begs the question: Why now? The contracts don’t expire until 2038.

The answer is simple. The state wants to issue revenue bonds to pay for the Twin Tunnels, the massive conveyance project that will transport water from the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta.

The state estimates this boondoggle will cost $25 billion. At this juncture,

True, the reviews were excellent; everyone relishes Hazard’s columns as the most informative source on the 101 mess. And I hear often from people that they began reading the paper because of his 101 coverage.

Moreover, I was dazzled by Hillary Hauser’s column, which was equally informative.

But I guess we’re all used to seeing Hazard in his old place.

And God knows there will be plenty more pennies dropping in the coming months about the mayor and her consiglieri and their various maneuvers to scuttle the largest public works project in the history of Santa Barbara County.

So keep them coming!

I live on Pimiento Lane, and sometime around September 16 my mailbox was robbed, and the checks I’d written to pay bills were “washed,” forged, and passed at other stores.

What a nightmare! Having to change all sorts of checking accounts, etc.

Total Lunar Eclipse Over Montecito

The red faded in an hour to a white hue, with the eclipse moving away at a faster pace. The moon set in the West at 4:45 am. As the saying goes, every picture tells the story.

October 8 Eclipse Timeline:

I

ventured into the first six hours of October 8 to capture the second in a unique tetrad series of total lunar eclipses with a “blood moon.” The October eclipse occurred on our annual Hunter ’s Moon, the first full moon after the autumn equinox’s Harvest Moon.

The first “blood moon” total lunar eclipse was April 14. The new name of Blood Moon, “is the name being used for the four eclipses of the ongoing lunar tetrad – four total lunar eclipses in a row, each separated from the other by six lunar months (six full moons).” (Earth Science) These eclipses will occur in 2014-2015. National Geographic reports “This year is one of the rare years with multiple lunar eclipses.

Wednesday’s will be the second in a series of four – a tetrad – over two years. That pattern won’t repeat for another 20 years or so. If you missed this one, the next will be on April 4, 2015; the last in the tetrad will be on September 28, 2015. Both of the next two eclipses will be visible from all of North America except the West Coast. People out west will have a long wait for their next lunar eclipse: January 31, 2018.”

The moon, which should be totally blocked from the sun by the Earth when it fully eclipsed turns “red” because, according to Zoe Baily at the National Space Center: “During a total lunar eclipse, light is bent and filtered as it passes 16 – 23 October 2014

through the atmosphere causing red light to shine on the Moon. To see an eclipse, the Earth must move directly between the Moon and the Sun, causing Earth’s shadow to fall across the lunar surface. At total eclipse, when you would expect the Moon to be totally obscured by Earth’s shadow, the Moon appears red. As the Earth blocks the path between the Sun and the Moon, sunlight is still able to shine through the halo of gas that surrounds our planet, our atmosphere. However, the light does not make it through entirely unchanged. Light is composed of a spectrum of colors and only the reddish component makes it out the other side.”

We are fortunate be living in the hemisphere of our planet to view the eclipse in its entirety.

The moon rose in the East at 5:30 pm, while sunset occurred at 6:33 pm. The planet Uranus was visible all night conjunct and south of the moon, and despite the full moon’s brightness, all the stars normally visible were seen with the naked eye.

The beautiful Hunter ’s Moon’s first phase of the eclipse started at 2:15 am. I began to record the phases at 12:45 am, with the marker of full-moon brilliance at 1:32 am.

Focus on Desalination

We must all recognize that the District’s current focus on considering desalination as a new water supply alarms organizations such as Heal the Ocean. Nevertheless, unlike recycling that has a very limited application in Montecito, desalination would provide a reliable source of drinking and irrigation water to all of our customers. Desalination is also expensive but, with the possibility that drought is the new norm and Montecito’s dependence on rainfall recharge for 95 percent of its local and imported water supplies, coupled with the recognition that the competition for California’s fresh water supplies are ever increasing, we must take prudent actions to guarantee Montecito’s water supply reliability and security now and into the future.

Unlike what was insinuated in the recent article, grant money and loans provided in the $7.5 billion water bond on November’s ballot are focused mostly on groundwater and associate water storage projects with $735 million set aside for recycling projects; in fact, if Proposition 1 is approved by the voters in November, it is estimated that this funding source will not be available for about two years. Guidelines need to be established on how these funds will be allocated to the receiving state agencies. Our state representatives, as well as representatives from the Association of California Water Agencies, have repeatedly stated there will be monies available from the water bond for desalination projects, and the District intends to actively pursue these sources of funding.

In closing, we want to thank Ms Hauser for all the positive work her organization does on behalf of the Central Coast, and we look forward to working with her in the near future. We also encourage all our customers to be informed, know the facts, and stay abreast of all the District’s activities aimed at diversifying our community’s water supply portfolio. Please attend our meeting on Wednesday, October 29, from 6 to 8 pm at El Montecito Presbyterian church’s Fellowship Hall when our desalination consultants will present their initial report on the feasibility of a desalination facility in Montecito.

Each year the non-profit organization distributes millions of pounds of food, donated through food manufacturers, distributors, grocery stores, and private citizens. The Foodbank helps feed more than 144,000 people annually, of whom nearly 40 percent are children.

Produce harvested through the Backyard Bounty Program is added to the Foodbank’s supply. Brinton says the produce will benefit more than 300 member agencies affiliated with the Foodbank, including schools, churches, rehab centers, shelters, food pantries, and more.

“The program is a great cause, as it is reducing wasted food grown locally in our community, and providing nutrition and sustenance to those in need,” Brinton said. “We are so lucky in Santa Barbara County to have such a wide variety of fresh produce growing nearly year-round.”

Brinton is seeking produce donors and volunteers for the Backyard Bounty Day on Saturday, October 25.

members with harvest sites (orchards or gardens) in South Santa Barbara County, and volunteers to help harvest on that day, with the goal of harvesting more than five tons of produce. Or, produce can be dropped off at the Foodbank’s Santa Barbara Warehouse, located at 4554 Hollister Avenue.

Homeowners who are interested in donating fruit and veggies from their gardens and orchards are matched with a trained volunteer who will arrange a time for the harvest. The volunteers are knowledgeable about gleaning fruit and trimming trees, and are also bonded and insured through the Foodbank, so homeowners can have peace of mind. The Backyard Bounty donations can range from a single tree to large orchards.

“Our mission is to make sure that none of this produce goes to waste; to provide it to those who need it most,” Brinton said.

Montecito Union Removes Grass

Wood chips have replaced two lawns near the Montecito Union School administration building

WaterWise Santa Barbara, a water conservation and awareness program created by the Network of Santa Barbara County Water Providers, has recognized Montecito Union School for removing two lawns near the administration building over the summer, which we first reported a few weeks ago (MJ #20/37). The removal of the lawn, which was replaced with wood chips, has resulted in a 50-60 percent decrease in water usage, according to Montecito Water District’s Mike Clark.

Superintendent Tammy Murphy and other district administrators will soon decide the fate of a similarly underused patch of lawn on the north side of the building. Murphy hopes to make the north lawn replacement a project for parents to complete. Her aim is to have the project be part of the community-wide Montecito Beautification Day on November 8.

The goal of WaterWiseSB is to provide residents with information and techniques to deal with drought and conserve water at home, in the landscape, and at work. For more details, visit www.waterwisesb.org.

Tea Time Domestic Violence Solutions hosted its 7th annual High Esteem Tea at the Bacara with 300 guests raising $100,000.

The popular event, which had to move from the Biltmore because of growing numbers in attendance, was co-chaired by Valerie Greenberg and Claudette Rochrig.

Author and social theorist Jackson Katz, who now lives in Los Angeles, gave a thought-provoking speech on gender violence prevention, drawing attention to the recent spate of NFL incidents involving highly paid star players.

“At last it is now all out in the open!” he declared. “These are athletes our young people look up to.”

The mission of the organization, which reaches more than 9,000 people annually in Santa Barbara County, is to end the intergenerational cycle of domestic violence by providing prevention and intervention services and changing society’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to effect social change.

Aija, the 18-year-old daughter of exretail executive Elliot Mayrock and his wife, Alecia, a former head honcho with New York publishing giant Conde Nast, has already garnered notice as a screenwriter and director at the Santa Barbara International Film festival for the past few years.

“I was bullied for years in middle school and part of high school,” recounts Aija, now a student at the Tisch School of Arts at New York University... After my work in the film festival, I decided I needed to do something even bigger to help kids deal with bullying. I started writing the book in 11th grade and made it my goal to finish it before graduating high school.

“I completed it last year and have just released it this month in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month.”

Aija is currently touring through different schools to speak about the subject and promote her book.

“I am also donating many books to schools and libraries across the country,” she adds. “I am also giving part of the proceeds to anti-bullying organizations. My book is a survival guide that helps kids navigate bullying in every scenario.

“It offers survival tips, personal stories, quizzes and lots of sound advice.

It also includes rap poems. My book is not only about bullying. It is about confidence and creating an incredible life through adversity.”

Pricey Perfume Just in time for Christmas, the sweet smell of success is going on sale at the top London department store, Harrods, but you’ll have to be

extremely wealthy to afford their latest perfume.

To mark the opening of its Salon de Parfum boutique, the British perfumer Clive Christian has created a special edition of his number-one perfume with an eye-watering price tag of $225,000.

A standard bottle of the fragrance costs around $750 and is marketed as “the world’s most expensive perfume.”

But the one-of-a-kind new edition genuinely deserves the description thanks to the way it has been packaged.

Called the No. 1 Passant Guardant, it uses the perfume house’s signature crystal bottle and then ups the ante by covering it in hand-crafted 24-carat gold lattice work.

As with all the bottles, the top is a crown shape as the design was created in 1872 and paid homage to Queen Victoria.

But in this case, the gold crown is embedded with flawless white diamonds. In total, there are 2,000 individually set diamonds on the bottle.

Meanwhile, the lion motif on the front is made up of two yellow diamonds, with a rare pink diamond marking the lion’s tongue.

On his website, Christian says: “I was inspired to create an iconic bottle as precious as a crown jewel to mark this special event.”

any people of a certain age, including my daughter, Lily, grew up with Alan Thicke as Jason Seaver, the cool-headed TV dad on ABC’s hit sitcom Growing Pains that aired from 1985 to 1992. Alan, a Canadian, is father of both the actor Brennan Thicke and singer Robin Thicke.

Alan has a deep connection with Santa Barbara, having been married to former Miss World Gina Tolleson.

The couple lived in our area when they were together (they divorced in 1999 after a five-year marriage); Gina is currently executive editor of Santa Barbara magazine, and Alan – now married to Tanya [née Callau] – lives on a sprawling ranch in Carpinteria with his wife and 17-year-old son Carter.

Alan and family have begun filming the second season of their scripted reality show, Unusually Thicke. The center of the action is on the Thicke ranch, and much of an early episode in this second season takes place on Linden Avenue during Carpinteria’s annual Avocado Festival.

We met up with Unusually Thicke director Mike Ward (Holmes Makes It Right) at Lucky’s on Coast Village Road recently to discuss the upcoming episodes. Ward was born in Australia (before 1975), and moved to Canada in 1995, where he became “a chef by trade,” he says with a hint of pride.

“I’ve actually had the pleasure and fun of combining my two passions, which is cooking for a living and making television,” he adds. Mike started as sous chef at a restaurant in Toronto, became executive chef and cooked for Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, and other big names, but eventually

became disillusioned with cooking.

Why? “Because every chef I know is a functioning alcoholic,” he quips.

So Mike left the commercial food world, bought a computer, taught himself motion graphics and 3-D graphics and created his own brand of fake TV “commercials” for his amusement. Ward says he met a friend of a friend who was creative director of a station in Toronto and showed him his mock commercials. The director was impressed enough to suggest he could use Mike’s talent.

Before long, he found himself directing commercials and promos for Canada’s version of NBC; his first stab at directing a series was one called Look-A-Like for Canadian TV. The show, he says, was big in Europe and aired on TVGN in the U.S. “It was 16 – 23 October 2014

very inexpensive to produce, and you can turn [this type of reality series] out and sell them around the world. I went from cooking food to cooking up stories,” he says, laughing.

Now, Mike is here, living in Carpinteria for the next six months to shoot the second season of Unusually Thicke. All the episodes are scheduled to air on TVGN (TV Guide Network) some time in 2015.

A Day in the Life

The show follows a day in the life of the Thicke family. “It’s self-deprecating, which I like,” Ward says. “Alan is heavily involved in the writing with [co-writer] Luciano Casimiri.

The two of them concoct the narratives. After that, I’m brought in. I’m the guy who turns written words into action.” Ward seems genuinely impressed with Thicke’s comic timing, opining that he “has an SNLquality comedic sense.”

Here is the premise, for example, of a recently shot episode: Alan complains that he’s been honored at the annual Avocado Festival as “Mr. Congeniality” for the past two years, but what he really wants to be honored for is his guacamole recipe; this is the year, he believes, that his talent in that area will finally be acknowledged.

So, Alan enters his guacamole recipe and learns that the chief judge is comic Gilbert Gottfried, who will be coming up from Los Angeles to adjudicate the contest. Thicke arranges for Gottfried to stay at his ranch. The Thickes have designed a new bedroom for Gilbert and when he arrives at the home, Tanya shows him to his bedroom. Gilbert then makes a move on her, kisses and hugs her, and tries to pull her on the bed with him. It doesn’t go well, but Alan is reluctant to upbraid Gottfried for fear of losing the guacamole recipe contest.

Later, Gottfried continues to make trouble, implying that he has heard talk of some bribery that may take place, and that “certain members of the community have offered certain amounts of cash” for his vote.

It doesn’t go well at the festival, either.

“Alan is on stage, and three kids are chosen to be the avocado representatives and they’re wearing avocado suits,” Mike explains. “And Gilbert tears them apart. One is wearing a snap-pea outfit, another is just wearing a green T-shirt and the other something else; they were the worst costumes on earth.” As Gilbert mercilessly berates the kids and their costumes Tanya pulls him aside to ask what he’s doing. The kids begin to cry on stage and their “mothers” are crying too. The audience, filled with Carpinteria residents and Avocado Festival attendees, were unaware that the kids were actors and many of those watching became visibly upset.

“We had to get up and announce that we were doing a show, that the kids were actors, that they weren’t really crying,” Mike laughs. “I had to ask them to play along, because in the real world they’d be throwing beer cans at us. And they did. After that, everybody booed Gilbert when he tore into the kids.”

An upcoming episode features Carter toying with the idea of getting a tattoo; the cast and crew will shoot this in a tattoo parlor in downtown Santa Barbara. “Carter actually kind of wants to get one,” Ward says.

Presumably, his parents feel differently.

In another episode, a person by the name of Bailey invites Carter to the prom. It turns out Bailey is a guy. Carter says he has “no problem taking a dude to the prom,” that it’s 2014, but his buddies aren’t so sure.

So, be on the lookout for Alan, Tanya, Carter, Luciano, and Mike Ward. If they’re filming in your neighborhood, and if you hang around the set to watch, you’re likely to be pulled into what is shaping up to be a very entertaining Santa Barbarabased scripted reality (read sitcom) •MJ show.

homas Frey first sat down at the keyboards to undertake 2 Pianos 4 Hands more than 15 years ago, just a couple of years after onetime would-be concert pianists turned writer-actors Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt created the two-person multi-character piece about the trials of coming of age set atop a piano stool. Since then, Frey has performed it almost 700 times throughout the country and in the authors’ native Canada, where Dykstra and Greenblatt themselves just recently retired from the never-ending tour that claimed a Dora Award, the Canadian equivalent of

the Tony, when it debuted.

Although he works frequently with other projects, Frey keeps returning to 2 Pianos 4 Hand, most recently serving as director. In fact, only a late cancellation has him also returning to the stage to play Ted in addition to staging the musical, which opens Rubicon Theatre Company’s 17th season this weekend. Christopher Tocco, who previously portrayed Richard at City Theatre in Pittsburgh, reprises the role in Ventura.

in genres ranging from classical to pop, ending with a complete performance of Bach’s “B Minor Concerto”.

Q. You’ve done this show hundreds of times. What keeps you coming back?

A. For a long time it was something I just had to do. It was written by the two authors for them to perform themselves, and my life was similar. I was a piano player for quite for a very long time and had had similar experiences.

When I first saw the play, I knew I had to try to do it. But I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to because the piano playing is very difficult, or at least was for me at the time. It was a huge personal challenge, and it took me many years to master, or at least come close.

Then I stated playing the other part, so there was more to learn.

But it’s a really great playground for an actor. Because it encompasses lots of styles as the two of us play 18 different characters, from age 5 to adulthood. And on top, you play a lot of classical and pop music to tell the story. The play keeps giving back, in different stages in your life as an actor.

The theme grows with you.

You obviously have to be able to play piano to do this part. What stopped you from going further with music?

I had a bad break-up with the piano in college. I’d had a scholarship as a performance major, but not the background to be able to play at that level.

And maturity-wise, being locked in a room for five to six hours a day drove me nuts. I had no life. And it also freaked me out. I developed a bad case of stage fright – I couldn’t play in front of people, which might be a barrier for a concert pianist.

So I focused on acting, even though it’s in the same sandbox. But there’s a different scene every night. If you’re playing a large, long piece by Bach, every note has to be the same every night. At my level, if I screwed up, it was more difficult to improvise Baroque counterpoint than the English language.

But I missed music. A year before 2 Pianos 4 Hands came on the scene I’d started taking lessons again. It was a long road back to deal with my nerves and get better as a player. I learned to practice and play in a more relaxed way. And this play gave me a chance to do it again in public, instead of heaving that idea just sit there. I get to pretend to be a concert pianist on stage. I don’t have to have a vast repertoire – just this one.

How does a show about two wouldbe professional pianists resonate with non-musicians? I’m guessing it’s something along the lines of A Chorus Line or the Putnam Spelling Bee show?

Everybody has some point of recognition with the story, some kind of dream they had to forgo, whether they admit it or not. We’re using music to tell the story – what [Alfred] Hitchcock called the MacGuffin – to explore character development and relationships.

I once asked Ted and Richard when they knew that the play was good.

They said it was when people came up after the show and talked about themselves. They remember arguing with their own fathers, or they’re doing it with their son. Others have said it’s really about tennis, isn’t it, because they wanted to be John McEnroe.

The play is about what happens when reality descends on your dream, about coping. You’ve been through it. What’s the secret?

That’s what the play is about. We all can’t be LeBron James, or Horowitz, or Glenn Gould. What happens when you realize you’re just four inches too short, or whatever it is. You don’t have the luck or education or skill. Then what do you do? Do you just give up?

That moment defines your character for a long time. That’s what these characters struggle with.

As director, what’s your vision for this work. What do you want audiences to take away?

The piece asks the question; what do you do when reality interrupts your dream? In Ted & Richard’s case, they decide to play for the more intrinsic reasons, for the love of the music and for each other... so what I hope audience feels is a sense of inspiration – that it’s not too late to pursue your dream for its own value.

I keep an email from a woman who told me she was a piano player who had quit 30 years ago. She could never tell her husband why. After the show, she got all her books back out and called the piano teacher and started taking lessons again. That’s what I hope we can create.

used in lots of schools, including New York University’s writing programs.

But she’s also an actress who appeared in more than 50 plays on and off Broadway before becoming frustrated, as so many others have, over the lack of good roles for women.

On the Edge, her play about Virginia Woolf, won a NEA Award and is just one of a dozen theater pieces Jones has written, while her screenwriting credits include The Christmas Wife and Unlikely Angel plus the popular TV series Touched by an Angel.

Now, Plaza Playhouse Theater in Carpinteria is staging Jones’s Calamity Jane, about the famed strong-willed woman of America’s old Wild West in a story that touches on the tension between her desire to live an unconventional life and the love for her child. New Directions at Symphony

It may not seem that way from this weekend’s season-opening concerts from the Santa Barbara Symphony which offers standard repertoire, albeit some of the most beautiful pieces ever written, including Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture”, Rachmaninoff’s “Symphony No. 2”, and Chopin’s “Piano Concerto No. 2” played by the exquisite Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter in her third visit to Santa Barbara following recitals for CAMA in 2007 and the Music Academy in 2012 – but the symphony is making its biggest effort at audience outreach ever with this season.

All the concerts after the kickoff are theme-based, from three works tracing Beethoven from student to master in November, to Impressions of Spain in March, to the orchestra playing live to a screening Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights in January, and other similarly concept-linked programs. The new thrust is the result of work by marketing director Kevin Flint, a Santa Barbara native and former independent film producer who has taken a different approach to making the symphony more appealing and relevant in Santa Barbara.

“The core of filmmaking is telling stories, and now it’s becoming the core of what we’re doing at the symphony,” Flint said in an interview.

“We’re telling the story of symphony orchestra. That’s why this season is a lot different from what you’ve seen in the past.”

The concept, Flint said, is to reach new potential concert-goers, those who already go out in Santa Barbara to other cultural and entertain-

ment events, but haven’t visited the Symphony at all, let alone become subscribers. The new direction came from market research both here and nationally that uncovered a path to move forward.

“New audiences aren’t as willing to commit,” he explained. “They’re more eclectic – they like different types of entertainment. They might go to a jazz bar, then wine tasting, and a concert on different weekends. So we had to create events. We can’t just put out a laundry list of all the classical music pieces we’re laying and expect people to show up. You have to be exciting if you want to attract ‘triers,’ make each concert an event in itself.”

Basic marketing dictated the changes, Flint said. “You can talk about features, or you can talk about benefits.

Classical music as a whole normally just lists what they’re playing. But we’re switching the conversation to the benefits, why you should attend.

It’s a great night out. There will be a story. You’ll learn something. It’s not just a concert.”

If that sounds like the kind of thing that would have typical classical music aficionados contemplating mutiny, the symphony isn’t abandoning its core audiences or the musical principals required to keep them, Flint said.

“We needed to provide the same artistic excellence. We’re just making it more accessible, telling compelling stories alongside the music.”

Even music director Nir Kabaretti and the symphony’s board of directors embraced the new direction, seeing this season as the first step toward changing how the organization presents itself. “None of the music is considered light or pop,” Flint said. “Even City Lights, the film has legitimate musical chops. It’s something the orchestra can sink its teeth into.”

Then there’s the special Valentine’s Day program on February 14-15, which features music from Brahms and both Robert and Clara Schumann, participants in “the most infamous love triangle in classical music history,” Flint said. “We’re going to tell the story of these three through the actual reading of their love letters during the concert. That’s an event, not just a concert.”

Flint acknowledged that not everyone will love the programmed events, but there will be room for adjustments in future seasons, and the research showed people appreciate the efforts to mix things up. “When we did surveys, what we heard over and over was that they love the collaborations and the experimentation,” he said.

“They may not always like what they see, but they said ‘Please don’t stop trying.’”

Pravrajika Vrajaprana (Kathy Densmore), a nun from the Vedanta Temple, was a childhood friend of David’s who gave a blessing and a synopsis of his life. She remembered his love of animals, his being skinny and nerdy and music being his salvation. He was funny and he liked to drink as we all did in those days.

Jay Dee Daugherty came from New York to attend. He and David met when they were nine, formed a band at that tender age and have been friends ever since.

Joanne gave an open dialogue with video and audio clips of their life together that was all too brief. She felt they were fated to be mated. It was about love, laughter, and rock and roll. As David said, “Music moves the world.” And then it was time for the guests to wine and dine and remember their friend.

it is wise to recall the promises concerning the Central Coast hook-up to the SWP. Independent analysts peg the real price tag for the Twin Tunnels, inclusive of cost overruns and interest, at $67 billion to $100 billion.

And for what? The Twin Tunnels are a conveyance system, not a water procurement system; they will produce no new water. And the primary beneficiaries are corporate farms in the western San Joaquin Valley and the Tulare Basin, not southern California urban ratepayers.

So what would another cascade of revenue bonds look like for Montecito?

Let’s do a few back-of-the-envelope calculations. According to a Montecito Water District report, Santa Barbara’s share of the Twin Tunnels would amount to about one percent of the state total. Montecito would account for 7.25 percent of Santa Barbara’s obligation. If the final price tag for the Twin Tunnels hits $100 billion – a distinct possibility – Montecito would be required to cough up $72.5 million.

Even if the cost conforms to the state estimate of $25 billion (highly unlikely, given the dismal water project history earlier cited), our community will still have to pay $18.12 million. That’s hardly chump change.

Worse, we’ll have to spend that money for – literally – nothing. We will receive no extra water for our investment. Our water security will not be enhanced. Essentially, we will be forced to spend millions to subsidize corporate agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley. It would make far more sense to use that money for a desalinization plant dedicated to our community. That would provide water derived from local sources, owned and controlled by local people.

Experience has demonstrated that we can’t depend on the state to take care of us. We must take care of ourselves.

More Congestion Ahead

Many thanks to Bob Hazard for his well-written and informative update on mayor [Helene] Schneider and the 101widening project published in last week’s Montecito Journal.

I find it ironic the mayor is expressing concern that the Caltrans 101 widening project may increase future congestion on some city streets, since she has previously ignored the pleas of Coast Village Road business owners and neighbors frustrated with the intolerable congestion already existing on that city street.

Prior to the 2009 closure of the southbound freeway on-ramp at Cabrillo Boulevard, 1.2 million cars and trucks annually used that on-ramp. That traffic is now forced to use Coast Village Road to access points south, causing a massive increase in congestion that is threatening the livelihood of merchants, increasing risks to pedestrians, and degrading the character of the community.

Rather than acknowledging these issues and working to advance the Caltrans plan that includes re-opening a southbound on-ramp, she ignored her constituents’ concerns for a new on-ramp and instead asked “…what is technically the need for it at all?” (SBCAG meeting May 2013).

to meet the governor’s representative in Sacramento to lobby for the Montecito Association’s plan that did not include the much-needed on-ramp. And this January, she was the only South County member of SBCAG to vote against the widening project.

Now Mayor Schneider says she will be publicly supporting private parties who have filed lawsuits challenging the Environmental Impact Report. This will further delay the project, increase the cost to taxpayers, and leave Coast Village Road congested for years to come.

I have been waiting for Hillary Hauser to speak... I know Hillary from her darling dog missing, from the beach, from her incredible parties to raise money for “Save the Ocean.”

When I learned more about her and Save the Ocean, I was permanently hooked! Hillary was right about the sewer project at Rincon, and she is right again here, even though at first her chances of success were about minus zero.

Please, citizens of Montecito (I feel so blessed to be one) consider this alternative to the desal thing. This is a brilliant woman who has moved mountains and has left nothing but success and a nature conservancy in her wake!

Montecito Journal should change its slogan from “The Voice of the Village” to “The Voice of the Pusillanimous.”

Ray Bourhis Montecito (Editor’s note: I don’t know how “shameful” it was, but the Federalist Papers printed – anonymously – the pros and cons of the newly proposed U.S. Constitution and whether it should be adopted by the various states in its then present form. Because the authors – Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay – used the pseudonym “Publius,” each man’s positions could be debated openly and without rancor. The push for secret votes on Election Day was essentially a vote for anonymity. Often, anonymity is the only way to ensure an honest public debate about sensitive issues that may pit neighbor against neighbor. So, unless a letter writer has maligned an individual or business, we’ll continue to honor their requests to keep their names out of the paper. – TLB)

Don’t Do It

If voters pass the mega-bond issue Measure S, say good-bye to SBCC as we know it. It was the tradition of this low-profile college to always consider its scenic setting as the signature focus of the campus. This tradition has now been shattered by a new campus construction aesthetic that is better suited for a Dubai shopping mall.

Take a look at the new college building design presented on the SBCC Measure V website, due to start construction January 2015. Instead of blending into the coastal setting, new SBCC leadership has chosen a four-story classroom building design that screams “Look at me,” instead of preserving the sweeping coastal vistas and quiet dignity this campus always protected in the past.

After 2010, SBCC leadership radically changed with an entirely new elected board of trustees majority, who in turn hired a new out of town college president in 2012. This new SBCC leadership team now demanding the Measure S $300-million megabond has not even served a full term.

The majority of SBCC board members, if Measure S passes, will not have served even two years.

There are plenty of reasons to turn down Measure S: it is too large, too expensive, too complex, too unstructured, and sits on our tax bills far too long. But even more, one shudders to think what will become of our beloved SBCC campus when this untested and inexperienced new SBCC leadership team is handed a $300-million blank check and this overpowering new campus construc16 – 23 October 2014

tion aesthetic becomes the new norm.

If you want to save SBCC as we know it, vote no on Measure S. SBCC can come back with smaller, more focused bond issues for specific campus maintenance needs that are far more in tune with local community sensibilities. I urge you to vote no on Measure S. Bowled Over – Usually things have pretty much quieted down at the Santa Barbara Bowl come mid-October, as the weather turns colder, nights come earlier and school and work demands rise. But there’s not much normal about this autumn so far, as the air and water temperatures were hotter than a normal summer. So naturally, things are re-heating up at the Bowl this week (not that the promoters could have known that last winter and spring), with music ringing from the hills six out of the next seven nights. Kicking things off Thursday, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band turn Santa Barbara into Margaritaville, as the ultra-laid back singer-songwriter returns to thrill Parrotheads along with another amiable album Songs From St. Somewhere (7 pm; $76-$180)... Trip-hop/dance-groove pioneers Massive Attack, whose hypnotic sound dates back more than 30 years (23 years of recording), are joined by Brooklyn-based TV on the Radio in concert Friday (7 pm; $40-$62)... On Saturday, Ray LaMontagne, whose 2010 album God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise won the Grammy for Best Folk Album (and featured Song of The Year nominee “Beg Steal or Borrow”), returns to the Bowl behind his fifth album, Supernova, which was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. The brothersister duo The Belle Brigade opens (6:30 pm; $44.50-$74.50).... Hail, hail Hall & Oates, the best-selling duo in the history of rock ‘n’ roll, or any genre of music for that matter. It’s been eons since Daryl Hall and John Oates had a hit single, but back in the day – the mid-1970s to the mid-’80s, the duo scored six number-one singles, including “Rich Girl”, “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do), “Maneater” and “Out of Touch”, plus five more Top 10 hits: “Sara Smile,” “One on One,” “You Make My Dreams,” “Say It Isn’t So”, and “Method of Modern Love”.

That’s been more than enough to earn the original blue-eyed soul heroes induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, and sustain them through sporadic tours more than 40 years after “Sara Smile” first hit the airwaves. And they’re still passing it on: up-and-coming fellow Philly-based soulful singer-songwriter Mutlu opens the show (7 pm; $45-$90).... FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17 ‘Heiress’ Today – Avery Clyde makes her SBCC Theatre Group debut as Catherine Sloper, the shy and awkward woman navigating the terrains of love and regret, and desire and duty, in The Heiress, Ruth and Augustus Goetz’s adaptation of Henry James’ novel Washington Square. As the daughter of a wealthy New York doctor whose mother died giving birth to her, Catherine is caught between the demands of her emotionally distant father and her passionate young suitor, played respectively by SBCC alum Josh Jenkins and Tom Hinshaw, a veteran of SBCC Theater and member of the Genesis West ensemble.

Clyde’s most notable theatrical performance was in the critically acclaimed StickFly at the Matrix Theater, which won her the Ovation, LADCC, Garland & NAACP awards for best ensemble performance. Kate Bergstrom, who has directed for Elements Theater Collective and Plaza Playhouse, and Evan Bell, who has acted with Out of the Box Theater and the Rubicon, are also new to SBCC, but the rest of the cast – including Marion Freitag, Leslie Gangl Howe, Leslie Ann Story, and Montecito native (and recent SBCC grad) Katherine Bottoms – are regulars on the Garvin stage. So New Orleansraised, New England-based singer-songwriter Chris Smither isn’t just releasing a doubleretrospective CD called Still on the Levee offering fresh perspective on a selection of songs ranging from his first composition, “Devil Got Your Man”, to recent originals. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22 Ukelele Wizard – Comparisons and superlatives are a writer’s cheap ploy, but Jake Shimabukuro is one of those artists who actually deserves all the critical accolades that have come his way. The ukelele master has been called the Jimi Hendrix or Miles Davis of his instrument, and understandably so – as his skill, technique, innovation, and prowess has seen him take what was thought to be a limited instrument through any number of genre (and combinations) and beyond, exhibiting both lightning speed and dexterity and a gift for phrasing.

“Business as usual becomes invisible,” he said. “We’re trying to solve that problem. When an organization reinvents itself to be more energetic and alive, people notice.”

Playing Hardball with Wall Street

Michael Lewis had just a few minutes over the phone between speaking in Las Vegas and catching a plane to Germany, where the prolific author (Moneyball, The Big Short, The Blind Side, and Liar’s Poker, to name just a few) was to receive an award. But that was plenty of time for the former financial Salomon Brothers bond salesman-turned-financial-journalist and nonfiction author to touch on both baseball – the Oakland A’s having just lost the wild card game – and Wall Street, the subject of his latest book, Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt, another opus in Lewis’s reportorial storytelling style asserting the U.S. stock market is rigged for the benefit of insiders.

The book has not only sparked a lot of controversy, it’s also drawn the attention of Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, Moneyball, TV’s The West Wing, and Newsroom) and producer Scott Rudin (who also worked on Moneyball), who are collaborating on a forthcoming film.

Lewis returns to Santa Barbara to speak at the Granada Theatre on Tuesday, October 21, as part of UCSB Arts & Lectures’ Word of Mouth series, a trip he said he’s looking forward to after enjoying dinner at event sponsor Craig McCaw’s house seated next to Don Johnson the last time through. Even as grizzled a journalist as Lewis found the experience eye-opening. “I’m still living off that,” he said with a laugh. “He was so different from what I expected.”

Q. I know we should talk about Flash Boys, but I’ve got to start off with Moneyball, since we’re in the midst of the baseball playoffs. While Oakland lost – the curse of Billy Bean in the post-season – all the other underdogs won by playing some sort of version of Moneyball. What are your thoughts about the season, about the influence of the book and movie on the game? Are there still inefficiencies in the game?

A. There’s no questions that the inefficiency in the market isn’t anything like what it was when I wrote the book. But the sport is being studied in a way that’s never happened before, and all sorts of stuff is coming up. There is a really good piece to do on the research and the analytic work that some of the front offices are doing. How I know this is true is that I tried to talk Billy Beane into letting me come in and write a magazine piece about last season. He didn’t want me anywhere near because he thinks he knows things (others don’t). He doesn’t want me to blow it (for them) again. I do think, though, in the long run that they’re doomed, because the inefficiency will be squeezed out of the sport.

Okay, so on to Flash Boys and the not-so-above-board ways of exploiting markets. How does this sort of thing happen, that the market and trading can be rigged? Is it just human nature of unchecked greed? Technology not able to keep up?

It’s the nature of Wall Street. It’s not an immoral industry, but it’s amoral.

The first instinct of the financial sector is to exploit opportunities without thinking about the social consequences. In this case, it was accidental, a combination of well-meaning but somewhat wrongheaded regulation and technology led to this opportunity for some people to front run everybody else in the market. In a more perfect world, people would raise their hands and say “We’ve got to fix this!”

Instead, they decided to make a whole bunch of money.

Author Michael Lewis comes to the Granada

When you have an industry that is very complex and regulators who don’t get paid anything in relation to people actually in the industry, that’s a recipe for trouble. How you fix it is a whole other question. The reason I wrote the book was discovering these guys who might actually have a solution through entrepreneurship. I’ve given up on the regulators, because I don’t think they can or will do much.

But I do think if you have enough market pressures – if the customers can be organized sufficiently – you might get some movement. You might get more rational behavior.

Is there a nutshell way to explain the loophole that’s the subject of the book?

The story is about a Canadian guy who figured out the various ways that people are being preyed on in the market by high-frequency traders (HFTs) who are sold an advantage.

There are actors in the market who have an advanced view of all prices and are allowed to trade with ordinary stock market orders and old prices. So they already know the result of the horse race before it’s run, and they get to bet against you.

That’s a crude example, because it’s actually infinitesimal fractions of a second, which turn out to matter. It creates a totally unnecessary scalping operation in the middle of the market. They only trade with you if it’s at a price that advantageous to them.

This would be illegal if it weren’t being done with computers. But for whatever reason, it’s been accepted by the SEC because it’s being done by high-speed computers.

So isn’t that a simple fix?

Well, yes. There are things the regulators could do. But they don’t.

Because for one, anything they do to change the speed of the market would likely just create more loopholes to exploit. But the bigger problem is whether they have the will to regulate. Which they don’t, because they all want to go work for HFTs. In the book, the main character... does a study about how many people who worked at the SEC left to work for HFTs in the past few years. They stopped looking when they got to 257.

I’m not being cynical; this is just the way it is. People go work for the SEC so they can get jobs on Wall Street. The last thing they’re going to do is piss them off.

All of your books about Wall Street have created some controversy, but nothing like the backlash for Flash Boys.

You know why? Because it’s the first time I’ve tried to take money away from people. The previous books had descriptions of what had happened, but none of them had financial implications for the actors or were going to lead to anyone losing their business.

I’m just trying to tell the story of the guys who are doing what they’re doing. But the effect (is threatening) the most lucrative business on Wall Street where people are making a billion dollars a year doing this. If my main characters have their way, the business would be shut down.

Is that what you were looking for?

I’m not a bomb-thrower. I just loved the story. So, I’m of two minds about the reaction. On the one hand, I think it’s great that all these investigations have been launched as a result of the book, and it might lead to reform.

But on the other hand, when a book becomes so controversial, it doesn’t get read as just a book anymore. I’d rather it (just be) a story, not a piece of agitprop. But it’s a small price to pay if it actually might change the •MJ world.
