The Santa Fe Film Festival is our community’s longest running film event, and over the years it has brought many of the world’s best filmmakers and their projects to the City Different. Being able to view these films at the festival expands our cinematic world, and experiencing all the film festival has to offer is the perfect midwinter activity for chilly nights. Inside you’ll find the full schedule of films and events, as well as other pertinent information about the festival. This year is special with the launch of the Film and Television Hall of Fame New Mexico. As you probably are aware, many major Hollywood films are regularly created in our state, along with a number of fascinating small budget and short films. Like other artists, filmmakers are inspired by Santa Fe’s community—our light, our landscape, and our creative energy. This is your chance to see their visions. For a useful list of other activities while you are enjoying the season in Santa Fe, check out our online calendar at calendar.santafean.com. More and more, our town is a year-round playground of cool activities. Be sure to visit the advertisers in this issue who have made this special issue possible. Most of all, enjoy!

Africa Calls offers a 13-day safari for two in Zambia for the live auction.
Cancer Foundation for New Mexico Sweetheart Auction The annual Sweetheart Auction returns with breathtaking new trips—Mexico, Zambia, and fly fishing—stunning art, including a woodblock print by Gustave Baumann and an Allan Houser sculpture, and other biddable goodies. Peruse them before the first fall of the gavel while enjoying culinary delights. The Dream Vacation raffle is always a big hit; this year’s possibilities include destinations in Australia, Ireland, Peru, and France, where winners can enjoy five to seven nights in their selected country. Proceeds from the raffle and both the live and silent auctions go toward nonmedical aid for cancer patients—offsetting transportation and hotel costs, providing access to support groups, and supplying grocery gift cards to those undergoing treatments. The Cancer Foundation for New Mexico earned GuideStar’s Platinum Seal of Transparency in 2017.—Anne Maclachlan fun d rai ser

This summer check out Santa Fe’s worldclass art and culture markets, notably the International Folk Art Market, Spanish Market and Indian Market. The Santa Fe Artist Market opens up again through December on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. next to the fabulous Santa Fe Farmer’s Market. Be sure to check out some of The Santa Fe Margarita Trail’s 31 stops as well. If you do not already have a passport for the Trail, stop by a Santa Fe Visitors Center or one of our participating restaurants. There are so many things going on to enhance your visit to Santa Fe—rated by 2015 Conde Nast Reader’s Awards as #3 Best Small City In The United States with the #5 highest score in the world. PREVIEWS Rare and Remarkable Katsina Dolls Adobe Gallery 221 Canyon adobegallery.com February 2–April 1 Reception February 2, 5–7 pm Katsina dolls are carved from cottonwood root, highly decorated, and they represent spiritual beings of the Pueblos. Given to young women to teach them about the spirits represented, the dolls are considered educational tools by the Hopi and Zuni people, who allow their sale to outsiders. (Other Pueblos do not allow this.) Hopi katsina dolls are intricately carved, then painted. Zuni dolls are carved with less detail, but are dressed in elaborate clothing and jewelry. The majority of the katsina dolls at Adobe Gallery were made for young women in preparation for katsina dances, and have been chosen for their authenticity.—Lisa J. Van Sickle
Right: Leonardo Salazar, St. Francis, detail. Leonardo Salazar is a son of Leo G. Salazar.
Las Familias Barela y Salazar: Traditions in Taos Woodcarving Santa Fe Community College Visual Arts Gallery 6401 Richards sfcc.edu February 8–April 11 Reception February 8, 5–7 pm Santa Fe Community College opens an exhibit honoring Patrociño Barela and Leo G. Salazar and their descendants. Both were woodcarvers from the Taos area, and both coaxed beautiful santos from the twisted pieces of cedar and juniper found in the forests of Northern New Mexico. Barela, born around the turn of the century, took up carving in the early 1930s. By 1936, he was accomplished enough that his work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in an exhibit of WPA artists. Hailed as “the discovery of the year,” he showed alongside Arshile Gorky, Marsden Hartley, and William de Kooning. Barela seems to have been unimpressed by the attention: he preferred his life in Taos to bright lights and big cities. He died in a studio fire in 1964. Salazar (1933–1991) always claimed he learned to carve by watching Barela. From his station on an old car seat under a propped-up camper shell, Salazar produced carvings that wound up in the Smithsonian, the Vatican, and around the world. The show at SFCC contains a few pieces by these legends, alongside carvings by their children and grandchildren, who continue the tradition today.—LVS
A grouping of katsina dolls. The heights range from 8 to 14" tall. All from the mid-20th century, the doll at right is from Zuni Pueblo, while the other three are Hopi.
