VAUDEVILLE AT THE LENSIC
PERFORMANCE Depression-era Santa Feans flocked to the Lensic after its 1931 opening for vaudeville shows featuring singers, dancers, magicians, and acrobats. Although vaudeville was waning in the ’30s as “talking pictures” ascended, the ornate Lensic hosted many of the traveling variety shows. Judy Garland, Rudy Vallee, and Rita Hayworth all performed on the Lensic’s stage in those early years. Playwright and director Ron Bloomberg and the Lensic present Vaudeville 2 this week in a return to earlier times. Building on the success of last summer’s show, Bloomberg and crew present local luminaries singing, Above: A band, complete with clown suits, entertains the crowd in a historic photograph from the Lensic’s archives. dancing, and making merry. Expect a barbershop quartet, some UnReal Housewives, and a star turn by Joel Aalberts, executive director of the Lensic.—LVS Vaudeville 2, August 3, 7:30 pm, $25, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, lensic.org.
BEER AND FOOD FESTIVAL
Above: There’s plenty to eat and drink from local breweries and food vendors at the New Mexico Beer and Food Festival.
EVENT Eat and drink your way through history at the New Mexico Beer and Food Festival: Panza Llena. For the third year running, living history museum El Rancho de las Golondrinas hosts food historians, New Mexican breweries, artisans, and more in a grand celebration of everything delicious. Enjoy samples from participating food vendors, learn historic methods of food preparation, and indulge in a beer or two from local breweries such as Tumbleroot Brewery and Distillery, Second Street Brewery, and Beer Creek Brewing Company. To add to the festivities, local bands Mozzy Dee and the Half Broke Horses perform Saturday, followed by Underground Cadence and the Rudy Boy Experiment on Sunday. This one’s for foodies and history buffs alike—after all, “panza llena, corazón contento”: “full stomach, happy heart.”—Sarah Eddy 3rd Annual New Mexico Beer and Food Festival: Panza Llena, August 3–4, 12–6 pm, $6–$8, El Rancho de las Golondrinas, 334 Los Pinos Road, golondrinas.org August 1, 2019 NOW 1
COURTESY LENSIC PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
PERFORMANCE When the nation’s ballet companies go dark for summer break, the dancers, as much as they might like to, can’t spend a couple of months just enjoying cheeseburgers and beer while sitting on the beach. A lifetime of training and conditioning is at stake. Daniel Ulbricht, a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, is spending the break bringing top-notch dancers and choreography to cities that don’t often have ballet performances. Performance Santa Fe welcomes Ulbricht’s Stars of American Ballet for the ninth time. The group is made up of soloists from several companies. They stage two programs on successive evenings, featuring several short works in a variety of styles on the first half. After intermission, both evenings conclude with George Balanchine’s Who Cares? Choreographer Balanchine, a founder of the New York City Ballet, built the piece on 17 songs taken from musicals by George Gershwin.—Lisa J. Van Sickle Stars of American Ballet, August 7 and 8, 7:30 pm, $29–$110, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, performancesantafe.org.

This exhibition features storage jars and dough bowls from a number of different Southwestern pueblos. While the bowls and jars were made and used for practical, everyday purposes, their intricate designs display a deep reverence for beauty, balance, and symbolism. Easy to find at the show are pieces of pottery such as a Cochiti Pueblo bowl, decorated in a white slip with black decoration, from the 1920s, and a Zuni jar painted with a rain bird and attributed to potter Lawsaiyateseta Lonkeena (1881–1958) ca. 1910.—Sarah Eddy

GREAT NEW MEXICAN MODERNIST ARTISTS: PAST AND PRESENT William R. Talbot Fine Art 129 W San Francisco #C williamtalbot.com Through September 30
Above: Ford Ruthling, The Unending Succession of the Seasons #21, embossed painting with mixed media, 29 x 42"
William R. Talbot Fine Art is known for their collection of antique maps, but the gallery also carries prints and paintings, predominantly the work of New Mexico artists. Great New Mexican Modernist Artists includes printmaking by Alexandre Hogue (1898–1994), Woody Gwyn, and Ford Ruthling (1933–2015). Ruthling was raised in Tesuque, exposed to art and artists at every turn. He is remembered as a gardener and man-about-town as well as for his art. He developed a technique for making embossed prints, influenced by folk art, rural life, and New Mexican tinwork, often incorporating a line of verse from Shakespeare or the Bible. In 1977 Ruthling was asked to design a series of postage stamps picturing historic Pueblo pottery.—Lisa J. Van Sickle
STAR LIANA YORK: HORSES THROUGH HISTORY Sorrel Sky Gallery 125 W Palace sorrelsky.com August 1–31 Reception August 2, 5–7:30 pm
New and previously unseen work by bronze sculptor Star Liana York reflects her interest in the long-enduring symbiotic relationship between human and horse. Though she grew up in Maryland, York felt an immediate connection to the Southwest when she moved to New Mexico in 1985. Her sculpture has since expressed a fascination with the diverse cultures and wildlife of the region, and her recent equineinspired work was spurred in part by her husband’s involvement in a horse shelter program. “My art is like air, I can’t live without it,” York says. “And I’ve had a passion for horses my whole life. To bring the passion that has driven me in my art and the passion I have for horses together for this show is very exciting.”—SE

This particular celebration of collaboration marks the tenth anniversary of their Santa Fe gallery, GVG Contemporary. Gruler makes fine furniture, abstract paintings, light fixtures, and sculpture. His furniture, made from wood laminate, is designed to be comfortable and sturdy as well as distinctive. Vaughn-Gruler is a painter, creating abstract works alive with texture and pattern. GVG Contemporary carries the work of a dozen other artists—jewelers, sculptors, and painters—whose aesthetic harmonizes with theirs.—LVS Above: Ernst Gruler, Ayer Table With Six Fame Chairs, wood laminate and mixed media, 94 x 48 x 30"
