WITH THE SNOW QUICKLY melting around town, it’s great to get out and enjoy our wonderful community. This is the perfect time of year, as we have much of the city to ourselves before the big tourist season kicks in. Our calendar is chock-full of great activities. I’m particularly excited to see some new venues for live music. The most recent one I’ve noticed is Beer Creek Brewing. I’m pleased that our established music venues are thriving as well, including Cowgirl BBQ, Tiny’s, Tumbleroot, El Mesón, El Farol, and others. We do our best to list all their musical presentations. My other favorite pastime during these chillier days is visiting our wonderful museums. Remember that on the first Sunday of the month, the state museums are free to New Mexico residents. If you don’t get out to the museums much, this is a great time to go. There’s always plenty to do around Santa Fe. Our only obstacle is getting off the couch and getting out there to soak it all up. No excuses— let’s do it!

PERFORMANCE Every once in a while, orchestral players long to leave the tumult of a full symphony orchestra behind for a bit and play chamber music—pieces written for a small group with one person playing each part. Sunday, January 20th, the principal string players of The Santa Fe Symphony—violinists David Felberg and Nicolle Maniaci, violist Kimberly Fredenburgh, and cellist Dana Winograd—joined by conductor Guillermo Figueroa, give a recital of two quintets and a string quartet. The two string quintets, for two violins, two violas, and a cello, are Mozart’s Quintet for Strings in C Major and Mendelssohn’s String Quintet No. 2 in Bb major. Both composers enjoyed playing viola themselves. The quartet is Summa by Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Pärt. The piece was written in 1978, but has a Baroque feel.—LVS

wolves at the library From “The Three Little Pigs” and “Little Red Riding Hood” to Jack London’s White Fang, the library is full of fictional wolves. During January, each of the city’s library branches will host a real wolf along with an educational presentation about the animals. Presented by Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, children and adults can learn about wolves in the wild, and how they differ from dogs and wolf-dog hybrids. The discussion includes the wolf ’s diet, hunting methods, pack and family structures, and the differences between wild and domesticated animals. A domesticated wolf from the sanctuary will be at the libraries during the presentations. Come learn the truth about these mythologized and misunderstood animals.—LVS Event

Memphis Barbree: New Mexico in Black and White and Recent Folios Edition ONE Gallery 728 Canyon Road editionone.gallery Reception January 11, 5–7 pm Through January 29

Landscape and documentary photographer, traveler, and explorer Memphis Barbree’s black and white works will be on display for attendees to admire. Barbree’s photography is a prime example of how an artist expresses herself in black and white, light and shadow. Spending over a decade studying under photographer George DeWolfe—student of Minor White and Ansel Adams—Barbree explores the interplay of life’s essential elements and natural forces. Her experiences in life have shaped her deep understanding of the unity within these forces. Even in black and white, Barbree’s works express complex messages about earth, sky, wind, water, fire, light, and time.—Jervon Perkins

PREVIEWS Helen Pashgian Charlotte Jackson Fine Art 554 S Guadalupe charlottejackson.com January 11–February 11 Reception January 11, 5–7 pm Helen Pashgian, now in her 80s, is part of California’s Light and Space movement, a group of artists who explore abstraction and minimalism through light’s effect on perception. She began her artistic career as a painter, but soon began using polyester resins and other industrial materials in a series of sculptures. Pashgian’s sculptures are translucent, often with one form inside another, and they are made up of simple shapes—columns, discs, and spheres. She has spent decades exploring light’s effect on the meticulously finished surfaces and subtle colors, and the way the forms dissolve into the surrounding atmosphere.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

Photo Unrealism—Altered Female Reality 7 Arts Gallery 125 Lincoln stevensnyderart.com January 1–31 Reception January 11, 5–7 pm Steven Snyder mounts her second exhibition at 7 Arts Gallery, again exploring the female face. Her current images include collages, using images from current and vintage fashion magazines and old photos, to explore the conventional ideas of femininity and female beauty. “This show is deeply personal for me,” says Snyder, “because makeup and fashion are my tools for changing the perception of my own male face and body to female, which is my transgender identity.” Snyder distorts shape and color in her portraits, with results ranging from playful to darkly serious.—LVS
