The sun stays up a bit longer, giving us just a bit more daylight to explore and enjoy our community. Soon, the mornings will be a little warmer and the outdoors easier to enjoy. But milder weather is not here yet, so let’s look at all the fun indoor activities. Tonic and other music venues are heating things up. Seems we Santa Feans prefer to enjoy live music in the clubs more in the winter than in the summer. So if it’s not El Mesón, think Vanessie or El Farol. Cowgirl and La Fonda continue to keep live music happening nightly. Also, don’t forget to check out the microbreweries such as Santa Fe Brewing Company, Second Street Brewery, Beer Creek Brewing, or Tumbleroot—all offer great music and tasty beer (I’m told). This is also an opportune time to explore the galleries. Tranquility and time to be alone with the art is uncommon in most of our galleries, given their popularity. Well, right now is the one time that you can savor the art and have some space to yourself. Oh, yes, and if you must be outdoors, the skiing is fantastic. Enjoy all that our wonderful city delivers.

BODYTRAFFIC dance company presents cutting-edge contemporary choreography February 5 at the Lensic.
BODYTRAFFIC
BODYTRAFFIC, February 5, 7:30 pm, $29–$110, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, performancesantafe.org.
blues concert PERFORMANCE Corey Harris and Cedric Watson, appearing Sunday, January 27, play the blues. Harris, a guitarist, grew up in Denver listening to his mother’s Lightnin’ Hopkins records and making music in school, a rock band, and his church. College in New England, a year in Cameroon, and a teaching job in Louisiana brought Harris to the Delta blues and a recording contract by the time he was in his mid-20s. Watson hails from Texas, where he was raised on zydeco, Creole, and Cajun music. He also moved to southern Louisiana, where he dove into the French language and old French music of the area along with harmonies and rhythm from the African, Caribbean, and Native American influences that combined into Creole culture. Watson performs on fiddle and accordion. Harris and Watson will perform solo and together.—Lisa J. Van Sickle Corey Harris & Cedric Watson, January 27, 7:30 pm, $22–$27, James A. PERFORMANCE One of the nation’s most talked-about young dance troupes hits the Lensic on Tuesday, February 5, performing a wide range of works from some of the world’s most compelling contemporary choreographers. BODYTRAFFIC was founded in 2007 by acclaimed dancers Lillian Barbeito, who grew up in Santa Fe, and Tina Finkelman. The eight-member ensemble has performed at high-profile festivals across the country, including Jacob’s Pillow, Laguna Dance Festival, and the American Dance Festival. This one’s for dance aficionados and new audiences alike—Dance Magazine named BODYTRAFFIC one of “25 to Watch,” and The Joyce Theater Foundation calls them “the company of the future.”—Sarah Eddy

Heyoka Merrifield is a writer, sculptor, and teacher when he’s not making jewelry in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley. He brings a collection of jewelry to Canyon Road inspired by a Corn Kachina dance he attended years ago in a Hopi village. Merrifield has spent decades exploring his own Native American heritage and the ceremonies of other Native and ancient cultures around the world. Merrifield’s jewelry incorporates symbols from ancient Egypt, India, and Celtic cultures as well as Native American imagery. “From [these] inspirational sources I create jewelry and sculptures that depict the Kachina powers I have experienced in similar ceremonies all over our magical planet Earth.” His jewelry has appeared in several films and has been owned by Glen Campbell, George Harrison, Stevie Nicks, and other performers.—Lisa J. PREVIEWS
Artwork Within 7Arts Gallery 125 Lincoln Ave 7arts.gallery February 1–28 Reception February 1, 5–7 pm
Hosted by 7Arts Gallery, artist Mary Jo Hatch’s solo show, Artwork Within, focuses on her greatest passion–the spiritual and emotional lives of plants. Houseplants are the subject matter for the oil paintings in the show, placed in both intimate garden and interior settings. Hatch packed her bags and moved to Santa Fe late last year, bringing with her a written and artistic knowledge of plants. Inspiration for her artistic path came after a younger Hatch was moved by the death of her houseplants 30 years ago, when several of them sacrificed their lives while she was preoccupied with finishing her first book. Artwork Within is Hatch’s first exhibition in Santa Fe.—Jervon Perkins

Spirits in a Material World form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center January 25–March 23 Reception January 25, 5–7 pm
Nika Feldman describes herself as a textile artist, rag picker, and costume ethnographer, and her job history includes stints in fashion design, social work, and sorting clothing in a thrift store. Feldman weaves these disparate threads into a whole in the eight pieces displayed in Spirits in a Material World. Starting with humble materials—old T-shirts and pull-tabs from aluminum cans— Feldman invests 200–300 hours of work in each piece. All this cutting, stitching, and embroidery results in pieces representative of garments, although most are not wearable. She sees the aluminum pull-tabs as “the cowrie shell of today’s North American culture.” Cowrie shells were used across much of the world as both currency and decoration. To Feldman, in North America the pull-tabs symbolize “cultural aspects which are revered, such as a lifestyle of convenience and disposability.” Her work fits perfectly at form & concept, a gallery that shows artists who are straddling the boundaries of art, craft, and design.—LVS

Bubbles and Bling Manitou Galleries 123 West Palace Ave manitougalleries.com February 1—28 Reception February 1, 5–7:30 pm
The annual February trunk show for Palace Jewelers at Manitou Galleries, Bubbles and Bling, is both a gallery opening and a party. Come for the Native, contemporary, and vintage jewelry and stay for the hors d’oeuvres, live music, and—of course—champagne. If you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day gift, Bubbles and Bling offers a selection of gold, silver, and turquoise creations. Featured jewelers at the show include Bernadette Lopez, Jennifer Curtis (Navajo), Steve Taylor, Kenneth Johnson (Muscogee/Seminole), Wes Willie (Navajo), Nicholas Cunningham, Roger Wilbur, and GL Miller. —JP January 24, 2019 NOW 13
