IT’S STARTING TO warm up, and I don’t mean just the weather. As we barrel towards St. Patrick’s Day, more and more activities are sprouting up around Santa Fe. For visitors, here for spring break and looking for things to do, we have a wealth of options. The nightlife scene continues to be active and the weather is pleasant enough during the day to enjoy early spring outdoors. As you can easily see by looking toward the mountains, the ski area has plenty of snow for the rest of the season. If you’re a skier and have been

waiting for a good year, your wait is over. Get up there now before the season ends so you don’t spend the summer wishing you had spent more days skiing. The art galleries are heating up as well. You’ll note in these pages many of them are hosting openings over the next couple of weeks. It’s not that cold, so your excuses for staying in are running low. C’mon out and play! Santa Fe is starting to wake up again.

Traditional Irish band Danú plays lilting tunes at the Lensic on March 7.
The Illusionists— Live from Broadway
performance Saint Patrick’s Day is coming up, and as luck would have it, an evening of traditional Irish music is coming to the Lensic. Danú band members hail from counties across Ireland—as do many of their instruments, including the Irish bouzouki, the bodhrán, the button accordion, and uilleann pipes, as well as fiddles, guitars, flutes, and traditional tin whistles. The group, founded in Waterford, Ireland, in 1995, has played across Europe and North America, transporting audiences to the Emerald Isle through its lilting and high-energy sounds. They sing in both Irish and English. In addition to playing folk classics Danú also performs original material. They have released several albums and have won multiple awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine. —Sarah Eddy Danú, March 7, 7:30 pm, $29–$110, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, ticketssantafe.com

Cast members perform both traditional and cutting-edge, high-tech tricks and stunts, mind-reading, disappearing, conjuring, escaping, and more. santafeanNOW.com
Eight contemporary artists from North and South America, Europe, and Africa examine the traditions of opera through the lens of current concepts of race, gender, and class. Candida Höfer and Mattias Schaller, both German photographers, explore architecture. Höfer looks at some of the world’s most famous opera houses, while Schaller shows the singers’ view from 150 Italian stages. Bill Viola, United States, presents Becoming Light, a 2005 video inspired by Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, a 19th century retelling of a medieval tale of forbidden love. Portuguese artist Vasco Araújo’s installation of a fictional diva’s dressing room takes on gender roles in opera. Watch for lectures, concerts, and other events during the show’s run.—Lisa J. PREVIEWS
Manitou Galleries 225 Canyon manitougalleries.com March 8–April 7 Reception March 8, 5–7:30 pm
Manitou Galleries presents a month-long exhibit of art by four women. PJ Garoutte, Martha Goetz, and Martha Pettigrew share gallery space with the work of Gene Kloss (1903–1996), née Alice Geneva Glasier. A native of California, Kloss fell in love with the Taos area on a honeymoon visit in 1925, eventually relocating to Taos. She enjoyed a long and illustrious career as a printmaker, and she is remembered for her etchings, aquatints, and other prints of the peoples of Taos Pueblo and Northern New Mexico. Like Kloss, Garoutte, Goetz, and Pettigrew are all representational artists who portray the Southwest. Pettigrew is a sculptor whose work ranges from tabletop-size to monumental. Horses and Native American women are among her favorite subjects. Goetz and Garoutte are both oil painters, employing vibrant color to portray the New Mexico landscape.—LVS Above: Martha Goetz, Abiquiú Lines, oil on panel, 20 x 16"

MAX WEBER: BECOMING MODERN Gerald Peters Gallery 1005 Paseo de Peralta gpgallery.com March 15–May 17 Reception March 15, 5–7 pm Max Weber (1881– 1961) is credited with dragging the reluctant art world in the United States from the embrace of 19th century impressionism to an acceptance of 20th century modern art. Weber was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in Bialystok, a part of the Russian Empire that is now Poland, emigrating to the United States 10 years later. He went to Paris as a student in 1905, planning a traditional course of study. The work of Matisse, Picasso, and Cézanne introduced him to the avant-garde, however, and Weber returned to the United States a committed modernist. His early exhibitions in the U.S. garnered a public and critical response that was downright vicious, but by 1930 he was given a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, the first awarded to an American artist. The show at Gerald Peters Gallery includes drawings, paintings, prints, and sculpture from the years 1905–1930.—LVS
Unbridled Manitou Galleries 123 Palace manitougalleries.com Through March 31 This curated exhibition celebrates and explores the several-thousandyear-long relationship between human and horse. Manitou Galleries requested that participating Above: David Frederick Riley, Black Jack, oil on canvas, artists place no 60 x 60” parameters on their creative interpretations of the equine subject, and the result is an eclectic variety of works. Horses are a specialty of guest artist Siri Hollander, who works with steel and recycled metal. The rest of the participating artists— all painters—have each dabbled in animal portraiture in some form, from boldly colored close-ups by Gail Gash Taylor to photorealistic black-and-white works by David Frederick Riley and loose, dreamy depictions by Amy Lay. Debra Sindt’s paintings capture animals in the wild, while Kim Wiggins most often includes them in his bright and busy depictions of the American West and its inhabitants. Douglas Aagard paints wide, bright landscapes while Jie Wei Zhou’s work tends to honor his cultural roots through Chinese subject matters. —Sarah Eddy
