New York’s Central Park has always been famous for its Shakespeare in the Park series, a highlight of the summer months. Santa Fe, never to be outdone, brings Shakespeare to the Santa Fe Botanical Garden. Whether in our very special Botanical Garden or Central Park, Shakespeare is very well suited for outdoor productions. Possibly because the language is so rich, we need nature to offset it. In any case, having outdoor Shakespeare in Santa Fe is a boon for us all. This year’s production is Romeo and Juliet, and there’s no better Shakespeare play than this one. I recently viewed All is a True, a film depiction of Shakespeare after he retired and returned to his hometown in Northern England. The film certainly conveys the brilliance of his playwriting skills, but also the character of the man who understood so well the struggles of power, lust, and greed. While Santa Fe has a long list of great things to do this weekend, beautifully noted in this publication as well as online, Shakespeare on a perfect Santa Fe evening will be an event to remember.

EVENT The NM Cocktails & Culture Culinary Festival draws gastronomes and mixologists alike to Santa Fe for a weekend packed with food- and drink-related events. Saturday has seminars and tastings throughout the day, including events focused on whiskey cocktails, South American spirits, French brandies, and tiki cocktails. Sunday starts with a 10 am fundraising bike ride for the Helen David Relief Fund. In the afternoon, look for a live bartender competition and a tasting area and art show. A highlight of the weekend, The Chef & Shaker Challenge Grand Tasting happens Saturday from 7–10 pm. Chef and bartender teams from each participating restaurant, among them Anasazi Restaurant, La Plazuela at La Fonda, Eloisa, and Paloma, create top-notch food and cocktail pairings. EVENT At El Rancho de las Golondrinas, spring is the time of year when sheep lose their heavy winter coats in preparation for the summer heat. This lively weekend festival celebrates the changing of the seasons by representing every aspect of traditional fiber arts, starting with sheep shearing and including wool dyeing, colcha embroidering, Native finger weaving, and more. In addition to the fiber-related demonstrations, visitors can watch traditional plowing, whittling, and blacksmithing demonstrations, try traditional foods, enjoy dance performances at 1 and 2:30 pm, and, on Sunday, make their own adobe bricks. PERFORMANCE Punk and sludge band Call of the Void pulls into town May 30 for a show with Snot Goblin and Noisem at The CAVE. The Colorado band has just released a third album, Buried in Light, to strong reviews. The lineup consists of Patrick Alberts, guitar and lead vocals; Gordon Koch, drums and vocals; Alex Pace, bass guitar and vocals; and Nathan Siegrist, guitar and vocals. Although still holding down day jobs— tending bar, inside sales at an industrial motor repair shop, water treatment, and management of a pizza place, respectively—the band has performed, recorded, and toured nationally since 2011 and has plans for a European tour in early 2020. They consider Buried in Light a concept album, an exploration of what drives the human psyche to persevere in an unforgiving world—or not.—Lisa J. This exhibition pairs Peri Schwartz’s paintings of her studio interior with Taizo Kuroda’s smooth ceramic works. Schwartz is from Far Rockaway, New York. Her studio paintings, which depict bottles, jars, books, and her drafting table, are carefully arranged. Taizo Kuroda’s porcelain works are monochromatic, elegant, and perfectly smooth. His vase-, plate-, and bowl-like objects appear to be eggshell-thin. Born in Japan, Kuroda studied ceramics in both Japan and Canada.—Sarah Eddy

Forsaking bright color and frenetic movement, Gendron Jensen makes exquisite drawings in graphite on paper. He grew up in the country in Northern Minnesota, near the Mississippi River. As a child, Jensen was fascinated with the bones he would find in the fields and woods. He began drawing while living at a Benedictine monastery. He collected flora, bones, and fossils as he walked through the woods in the area, and he began a series of huge drawings of single objects. He eventually narrowed his focus to bones. Singly at first, and later in thoughtful groupings, Jensen’s drawings are studies in light, shade, and texture. They are also spiritual exercises, meditations on life and death. Highly realistic, the drawings also possess an abstract quality.— Lisa J. Van Sickle

“I often reflect on Blackfoot history when beginning a new project, and how this ancient people viewed and interpreted the world around them in such simple and bold geometric forms,” says Terran Last Gun (Amskapi Piikani). His most recent series of prints blends his ancestral history and aesthetic with pop art and geometric abstraction. Often inspired by mountain landscapes and Blackfoot narratives, his work is minimalist and boldly colorful. It explores the interaction between form and memory. Last Gun was born in Browning, Montana, and is now based in New Mexico. He primarily works with printmaking and the technique of serigraphy, along with diptych paintings.—SE

One of Santa Fe’s newest galleries mounts a show of sculpture and drawings. The sculptures are glazed ceramic busts by Elise Siegel, work that gives a contemporary edge to a classical art form. Siegel’s portraits are not of actual individuals—they are meant to embody emotions like disquiet, ambivalence, and unease. Surrounding the sculptures are drawings by a group of artists born in the 19th century and whose careers stretched into the 20th. Jean Cocteau, Jean-Édouard Vuillard, Milton Avery, and Raoul Dufy are included, as is the 20th-century artist Wolf Kahn.—LVS May 30, 2019 NOW 13
