LUIS GERARDO SANCHEZ
Dance Machine at Skylab “It’s incredible, given how small this town is, the sheer [number]of really good DJs who are here,” Justin Mayrant, one of Santa Fe’s top spinners, says enthusiastically. At Skylab, part of Santa Fe’s Skylight nightclub, Mayrant mixes energetic sets ranging from house to minimal, trance-like techno. “[T]here are different sounds each night,” he says. “Santa Fe is a melting pot of music.” The electronic music scene in Santa Fe has earned enough attention to attract bigger acts, such as UKbased house DJ Nick Warren last November, as well as Berlin-based Martin Roth who performed at Skylab in March. Mayrant, who has been playing in Santa Fe for seven years, says that only recently has the audience in Santa Fe become more receptive to electronic music. He adds, “Now that [the audience has] blown up, it’s been exciting to have that constant presence.” Having spent the last few months taking time off to produce, Mayrant returns to Skylab on April 9 for a party called Dance Machine. Dance Machine will be a revolving set of three DJs featuring a range from Techno and House to Nu Disco and Deep House. As for Mayrant, he looks forward to “setting the plane that everyone is experiencing as a collective,” commenting that DJing is a “really fascinating way to connect with people.”—Joseph Case We <3 Tech featuring P.F.F.P and Justin Mayrant, April 9, 9 pm–1:45 am, 21+, $7, Skylight, 139 W San Francisco, skylightsantafe.com

Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Francisco Tarrega, Toru Takemitsu, Manuel Ponce, and Agustin Barrios Mangore.—EVC

Ralph T. Coe from curator to collector (with good pie) by Ashle y M . Big ge rs
AS HE BUILT HIS MUSEUM CAREER, Ralph “Ted” Coe would drive between Alaska and Santa Fe every year, diverting from the highway any time there was the promise of a stunning piece of art, or a good story shared over a piece of pie. Coe made monthly rounds among galleries, making small payments on rare pieces of Native art that he was personally acquiring. Over his lifetime, the curator, scholar, and collector (1929–2010) amassed a 2,000-piece strong collection, selections of which appear in Connoisseurship and Good Pie: Ted Coe and Collecting Native American Art, now on display at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. Trained in European art, the Ohio-born scholar worked as an assistant curator at The National Gallery of Art, and ascended the ranks of the Nelson Gallery of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, from curator of paintings to director. In 1953, while pursuing this career track, he bought his first piece of what was then called primitive art, this one from New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. The purchase ignited his passion for Native art, and two decades later, as the art world debated whether Native objects were ethnography or artifact, Coe firmly established Native objects as art. He changed the trajectory of the art world with Sacred Circles: 2,000 Years of North American Indian Art, a 1976–77 show he curated in London for the Hayward Gallery. Many 10

of the objects had been borrowed from galleries or private collections in Santa Fe. After relocating to the City Different in 1985, he launched another revolutionary exhibition, Lost and Found Traditions: Native American Art 1965–1985, which opened at the American Museum of Natural History and emphasized contemporary Native works. All the while, Coe was developing his own private collection. “Because of his abilities and training, and years as a curator, he had a deep knowledge of the aesthetics and artistic process. But like anyone who collects anything, he’s drawn [to specific objects] by emotion as much as intellect,” says Bruce Bernstein, executive director and curator of the Ralph T. Coe Foundation, which now controls Coe’s collection. Bernstein selected some 200 items for the foundation’s Wheelwright exhibition. The rare works include both historic and contemporary pieces, including a 19th-century Haida Chilkat robe and a mid-18th-century moosehide coat. Bernstein says Coe’s most treasured works were those from his personal friend Joyce Growing Thunder Fogarty, including one of her fully beaded horse masks. Of the works in his collection, Coe wrote, “They are not trophies but instruments of passion with the power to unexpectedly reveal mysteries.” Although the public exhibition closes April 17, Bernstein invites visitors to come by appointment to the foundation’s headquarters, where they may touch the items (as they are unable to do in museums). “We feel learning about the objects can be broadened in a poignant way by handling the collections,” Bernstein says.

Pablita Velarde, Mineral Earth Painting of an Eagle after a Rabbit, earth minerals, 24 x 12"
Pablita Velarde and Helen Hardin: Tradition & Innovation Adobe Gallery, 221 Canyon, adobegallery.com Through April 30 Pablita Velarde (1918–2006), born in Santa Clara Pueblo as Tse Tsan (“Golden Dawn”), epitomized the do-it-yourself ethic in the art world: Painting with self-mixed pigments in a studio she built, she created works that evoke— and sometimes straightforwardly depict—the traditions of her Pueblo heritage, albeit in a visual language all her own. Taking after her mother’s creative sensibilities at an early age, Velarde’s daughter Helen Hardin (1943–1984) was also keenly aware of the age-old methods and aesthetics informing her work as she forged her own illustrious art career. Native on her mother’s side and Anglo on her father’s, Hardin took perceptible cues from her mother’s work and the Santa Clara style, but often made less traditional choices in medium, coloration, and method. Works by both mother and daughter will remain on display at Adobe Gallery through April 30, offering a firsthand chance to compare and contrast the artistic legacies of both women.—DS

Leslie Richmond; Mystic Forest; cotton/silk fabric, kozo, and metal patinas; 32 x 73"
Solo Exhibition with Lesley Richmond,Tansey Contemporary 652 Canyon,tanseycontemporary.com April 8–29; reception April 8, 5–7 pm Lesley Richmond’s fascination with the symbolism, history, and organic forms of trees and leaves inspires her newest series, highlighted in this solo show. She methodically combines layers of materials—photographs, raw textiles, chemical processes, and metallic pigmented paints—to imitate nature and organic decay. Richmond’s deep understanding of negative space, dimension, and color adds visual significance to her forest renderings, while her technique evokes the delicateness of our natural environments. To honor Earth Day on April 22, Richmond will also exhibit mandalas based on tree and leaf forms.—SL
