Santa Fe Music Week is the perfect time to get a taste of Santa Fe’s year-round music scene. For 11 days, we’re highlighting an outstanding group of musicians and fabulous live music venues in our city. I hope you will take this opportunity to join the celebration and discover new favorites, support a local up-and-coming musician or two, and find a new venue where you can dance and enjoy music. Music is an important aspect of Santa Fe’s deep cultural tradition. It makes a significant contribution to quality of life in our community. Enjoy this first-ever Santa Fe Music week; whether it’s on the Plaza for free live music, at The Santa Fe Opera for a national artist, or in one of our many wonderful bars and restaurants for a favorite local band. Immerse yourself in the sounds of Santa Fe!

publisher’s note

While we all listen to recorded music in our cars and in our homes, there’s something special about the live music experience. Live music, created on the spot, generates an energy and spontaneity that is central to the creative process. Live performance draws us together, even if it’s a style of music that may not be what we usually listen to. The fact that it’s live simply engages us. On many of this summer’s evenings, I rode my bike to the Plaza to hear the wonderful music coming from the Plaza bandstand. A good slice of Santa Fe and many of our visitors were there as well. Live music brought all of us together to share in the experience. While Santa Fe Bandstand’s program is over for the season, Santa Fe Music Week will bring all of us together again in a variety of venues to enjoy the experience of live performance. As you look through the following pages, you’ll see an incredible lineup of local and national touring musicians bringing their magic to our ears right here in Santa Fe. I’m grateful to Tourism Santa Fe for taking the lead on this project. Doing something the first time is never easy, but we are all the beneficiaries of this effort. The weather is wonderful, the music is enchanting, and the whole city is alive with music. We have yet another reason to enjoy this very special place.

Santa Fe Music week ARTIST + EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

SIM BALKEY Saturday, August 25 Santa Fe Plaza 5:30 pm Free

A rising New Mexico star, Sim Balkey describes his modern twist on traditional country music as “George Strait vocals over an Eric Church track.” Balkey credits his family for shaping his love of music, noting that country music was always coming from his mother and father’s old-school 8-track player, rock music from his brother’s car stereo, and Spanish music from the front porch of his aunt and uncle’s home. At 16 he began writing music, and in 2015, he released his second studio album with his first single “How ’Bout We Do That Tonight” which rose to the Top 100 Texas chart. Balkey is currently working on his third studio album while playing nearly 100 shows a year.

his father pursued a career singing opera. As a boy, he studied both piano and guitar, eventually performing on drums in nightclubs, backing his father across Germany and Texas. His other passion, art, lead him to the University of Texas at El Paso before he eventually settled in Austin, Texas, where he established himself as a musician. His most current album, Blood and Bones (2018), showcases his reputation as “one of the most versatile, inventive, and engaging songwriters working today.” Joe West, an award–winning songwriter and performer based in Santa Fe, has been described as performing “theatrical folk music,” but he is influenced by both country and rock.

ROBERT EARL KEEN & THE FLATLANDERS Monday, August 27 The Santa Fe Opera 7:30 pm $46–$93

“The road goes on forever and the party never ends” is pretty much the catchphrase for Robert Earl Keen’s career. Keen says, “I always thought that I wanted to play music, and I always knew that you had to get some recognition in order to continue to play music, but I never thought of it in terms of getting to be a big star. I thought of it in terms of having a really, really good career and writing some good songs, and getting onstage and having a really good time.” Three decades out from the release of his debut album, he plays on Monday, August 27, at The Santa Fe Opera with The Flatlanders. The Flatlanders are an American country band from Lubbock, Texas. Founded in 1972, their seven-album discography includes One Road More (1980), Now Again (2002), Wheels of Fortune (2004), and most recently, The Odessa Tapes (2012).

Jimmy Gilmer & THE FIREBALLS Tuesday, August 28 Santa Fe Plaza 5:30 pm Free

shawn nagy

Also known as just The Fireballs, Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs were formed in Raton, New Mexico, in 1958 as an instrumental group featuring the lead guitar of George Tomsco (left). By 1959, they had their first hit on the Top 40 chart with “Torquay” followed by “Bulldog” in 1960 and “Quite a Party” in 1961. Several personnel changes occurred in the early 1960s, and singer/pianist Jimmy Gilmer joined the group. Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs, reached number one on the Billboard chart in 1963 with “Sugar Shack.” Band members have come and gone, though Jimmy Gilmer (right) often makes an appearance. They play their chart-topping recordings from the 1950s and 1960s.

Local favorites Nosotros are easily one of the most recognizable Latin bands in the Southwestern United States. The nine-piece music powerhouse seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with elements of rock, salsa, jazz, and cumbia to create an original sound that is distinctly theirs. Formed in 1994 as a guitar trio, the group expanded and eventually moved from their home base in Las Cruces to the Albuquerque/Santa Fe–area after the release of their first two studio albums. In 2014, Nosotros celebrated 20 years together as a band. 2016 brought the release of their sixth studio album, En El Más Allá, which saw the title track named the winner of the John Lennon songwriting contest. A video of the title track garnered four New Mexico Music awards in 2018. The album took home three 2016 New Mexico Music Awards.

Illinois-native Tiffany Christopher joins local yoga instructor Emily Branden for a vinyasa class to promote healing through performance. The pairing of concert and yoga brings together a unique energy that “heals and inspires authenticity by directing creative energy,” states Branden’s website. Christopher, known for her boundary-pushing singer/songwriter style, performs with impressive musicianship and powerful arrangements paired with smart vocals. Her current album, Tremendous Heart (2016), is filled with songs close to her soul, and tells stories of loneliness, passion, and the human spirit, with inspiration pulled from a journey across El Camino de Santiago in Spain and along the borderlands between Mexico and the United States.
