The staff here at Santa Fean NOW is honored and excited to be producing the official program for the upcoming Santa Fe Music Week, August 24–September 3. Make sure to check our online calendar for updates on the many performances occurring those days, and be sure to pick up our special print issue of NOW magazine, on stands August 23. One could argue that it’s music week every week in Santa Fe (in addition to being art week as well) and this week certainly offers many options. Deva Mahal, a wonderful blues singer, takes the stage at the Railyard in one of the most promising free shows of the week. I checked her out on YouTube and I’m here to tell you that she has got it going on. This is going to be a truly fun show. If you look at the music, nightlife, and concert listings, this weekend is stuffed full of great music. The Santa Fe Opera has The Italian Girl in Algiers, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival presents several wonderful shows, and of course, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale is in full bloom. And that doesn’t even touch on the other forms of music available every evening. Have no fear; our complete calendar does include the many genres of music available all week long.

girls inc of santa fe
EVENT Of all the arts and crafts shows that set up tents on the Plaza, the one run by Girls Inc. is among the biggest. Held the first weekend of August—this year August 4 and 5—the show is expected to attract 160 artisans showing fiber arts, sculpture, jewelry, and just about anything else you can think of. About two-thirds of the vendors are from New Mexico, the rest come from across the country. This year, Girls Inc. has added an event entitled Conquer Heights. Empower Girls. For a donation of $1,000 or more, you (or someone you have sponsored—the boss?) are allowed to rappel down the side of La Fonda on the Plaza, Above: Girls Inc. has been in all six stories and 62 feet. Santa Fe since 1956. Proceeds go to support the work Girls Inc. of Santa Fe does with the 5-to-18-year-old girls and young women in our community.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

Santa Fe Bandstand EVENT One of the pleasures of living in Santa Fe is spending summer evenings on the Plaza listening or dancing to the performers presented by Santa Fe Bandstand. There are just a few shows left, as the season winds up August 10. Thursday, August 2, pop stars Busy McCarroll y Los Big Deals take the stage at 6 pm, followed by Manzanares, another local favorite, at 7:45 pm. Tuesday, August 7, vocal duo The Sea The Sea, based in Troy, New York, opens, followed by Rob Ickes and Troy Hensley, playing guitar and Dobro—Merle Haggard and Marty Stuart rave about these two. The next night, Lipbone Redding takes the early slot and Jono Manson finishes the evening. Both perform original music. After that, there are only two more shows: a Native drum circle and Native flute player Robert Mirabal on August 9, and the Meow Wolf Monster Battle Party on the 10th, with costumes, foam rubber “weapons,” and DJs.—LVS

Enormous Forms Adobe Gallery 221 Canyon adobegallery.com August 6–September 29 Reception August 6, 5–7 pm 12
santafeanNOW.com
Adobe Gallery takes a look at exceptionally large examples of Pueblo pottery. Enormous Forms is a collection of 20 pieces from 10 different pueblos, all distinguished by their size as well as by their craftsmanship. The pieces are dough bowls and storage jars, made for personal use. Most date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each is a testament to the technical skill of the person who formed it, and each piece is an example of the designs and decorative elements typical of that pueblo.—Lisa J. Van Sickle
Charlotte Foust and Eric Boyer Hunter Kirkland Contemporary 200-B Canyon hunterkirklandcontemporary.com August 3–19 Reception August 3, 5–7 pm Hunter Kirkland’s August pairing shows Charlotte Foust’s abstract acrylics with Eric Boyer’s wire mesh sculptures. Foust combines color field and action painting, and she considers the process of painting to be as important as the end result. Her large canvases alternate splashes of bright color with quieter areas, giving the eye rest. Boyer uses black wire mesh to create elegant representations of the human torso. As the mesh bends into his forms, areas appear lighter and darker as the woven metal takes on dimension. He portrays single male or female figures, couples, and has done a series of the Three Graces. As Boyer pushes the possibilities of his medium, he is also creating some abstracts. —LVS

Cowboys and Cowgirls Sorrel Sky Gallery 125 W Palace sorrelsky.com August 3–31 Reception August 3, 5–7:30 pm Star Liana York’s fascination with cowgirls and cowboys comes honestly. Living near Abiquiú, York rides daily, and uses her horses and dogs to keep her small herd of cattle in line. She doesn’t hesitate to travel across state lines to help friends round up cattle on their ranches. Her firsthand knowledge of ranch life shows in her bronze sculpture. This year’s show honors the turn-of-the-century women who performed in the Wild West shows popular at the time. York accurately portrays the bonds between men and women of the West and the horses they rely on as both helpmates and companions.—LVS
