Santa Fe is blessed to have such deep and rich roots in the many cultures that make up the diversity we cherish in our community. Spanish traditions are among the many cultural influences that continue to contribute to Santa Fe’s textures and activities. For this issue of NOW magazine, I’d like to focus on the influence of flamenco. Particularly evident during these summer months, but also at other times of the year, Santa Fe has a wonderful array of flamenco companies. These vary from lone special events, such what Juan Siddi presents, to the almost daily performances that we see from Entreflamenco and other groups around town. Flamenco is such a powerful dance form, with its beginnings hundreds of years ago in the Roma people of Southern Spain. It’s a dance of passion and desperation. When I watch flamenco, I feel that passion through the music, the pounding of the dance steps, and the seriousness of the entire performance. This is the perfect time to take in a flamenco performance in Santa Fe. Each of the companies are performing, and most of those performances are listed each week in NOW magazine. I can’t wait to catch the next show.

EVENT Santa Fe Desert Chorale opens Saturday, July 21, with music of the three Bs—20th century American style, that is—Leonard Bernstein, William Bolcom, and Samuel Barber. This Twentieth Century American Masters program alternates with Sure on This Shining Night, compositions celebrating the beauty of nature, and The New World: Journey from the Inca Trail, a collection of pieces written in the Spanish-speaking Americas. Black Sea Hotel San Miguel Mission, parts of which date back to the beginning of the 17th century, leads a double life. Mass is said there weekly—in Latin, no less—and it also serves as a stunningly beautiful and resonant concert hall. Saturday, July 21, vocal trio Black Sea Hotel performs music of the Balkans at Above: On Saturday evening, Black Sea Hotel fills San San Miguel. The New York–based group Miguel mission with songs from the Balkan peninsula. collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble on the 2017 GRAMMY Award–winning album Sing Me Home. Black Sea Hotel begins with traditional Balkan folksong and choral arrangements, then works them into a form suitable for an a capella trio. Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time As part of the New Mexico Jazz Festival, musicians and filmmakers Barbara Bentree and John Rangel present a preview of their documentary film about Dave Grusin. Best known as a composer for film and television, Grusin has always found time to perform as a jazz pianist throughout his prolific career. Juan Siddi—Arte Flamenco Society PERFORMANCE Juan Siddi’s Arte Flamenco Society brings three heart-stopping shows to the Lensic Performing Arts Center. These shows—Friday, July 20 (Juan Siddi Flamenco), August 24 (Juan Siddi Flamenco), and October 7 (Belén Maya, celebrated avant-garde flamenco dancer)—feature artistic director, choreographer, and performer Juan Siddi, as well as a mix of other premier performers including José Luis de la Paz and Juani de la Isla, guitar; Alex Conde, jazz/flamenco pianist; José Cortés, singer; dancers Sonia Olla Fernández and Valeria Montes; and other guests. This remarkable ensemble delivers a bold, theatrical experience with an authentic Spanish flair. Critial Mass TOP 50: A Contemporary Reference of the Human Condition highlights photographic work from the top tier of Photolucida’s Critical Mass competition. The photographers, hailing from all over the world, have each taken their own approach to the theme of our very existence in this ever-changing and challenging world. Most all grapple with one or more of these questions—how do we as an international society deal with persecution, poverty, diverging religious beliefs, sexuality, psychological transformation, and the increasing threats to the ecological system that sustains us? Their photographic answers document the human condition at the beginning of the 21st century. The photographers employ documentary, street, and conceptual photography. Some push the boundaries of photography through their use of multimedia processes. All have created images worthy of contemplation.—Amanda N. Pitman

Rodney Hatfield Selby Fleetwood Gallery PREVIEWS 600 Canyon selbyfleetwoodgallery.com July 20–August 20 Reception July 20, 5–7:30 pm Who ever would have thought that one of the descendants of the Hatfields or McCoys—remembered for their epic feud—would turn out to be a painter? Rodney Hatfield, also known as “Art Snake,” is a self-taught artist and blues harmonica player based in Kentucky. Unhindered by rules or emulation, Hatfield paints mysterious and delightful works filled with musicians, magical animals, women in festive hats, and various circus characters. Full of light and visual textures, he refers to his paintings as “visual poems” based on the mythical characters and animals he experienced and imagined growing up in the rural area. Hatfield will be in attendance at the reception.—ANP

Tender Barbarian GVG Contemporary 241 Delgado gvgcontemporary.com July 20–August 17 Reception July 20, 5–7 pm Sculptor Jeffie Brewer took the name for his show from a quote by French fauvist painter Maurice de Vlaminck: “I was a barbarian, tender and full of violence. I translated by instinct, without any method, not merely an artistic truth but above all a human one.” Brewer’s work is full of contradictions. First drawn in soft pastel, the sculptures are realized in steel. He uses computer design programs and laser technologies, but the actual fabrication takes fire and brute strength. The sculptures are lighthearted and brightly colored, but their steel is heavy and unforgiving. Brewer sees himself as a tender barbarian, full of the dichotomies his sculpture embodies.—Lisa J. Jennifer O’Cualain and Paul Rhymer Manitou Galleries 225 Canyon manitougalleries.com July 20–August 10 Reception July 20, 5–7:30 pm Jennifer O’Cualain and Paul Rhymer both portray the animal kingdom, but their work is as different as can be. O’Cualain is an admitted animal lover, and animals are what she currently paints. Most of her work at Manitou is from her series of 6 x 6" animal portraits, a closeup of the face of a chicken, bear, or bison against a colored background. Her portrayal is realistic, even if the setting is not. Paul Rhymer has combined backgrounds in art, taxidermy, and modelmaking with his avocation as a naturalist. His bronze sculptures of wildlife are anatomically accurate, yet still show the nature of the modeling clay and the work of the hands that formed them.
