Welcome to Santa Fe. Whether you’re a guest visiting here for spring break or a local savoring this unusually warm weather, it’s a great time to be out and about in Santa Fe. In my neighborhood, the trees are already beginning to bloom. We locals know this is too good to last, so we’d best get as much of the warm sun on our shoulders as possible before the next snowfall. Of course, this weekend kicks off with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. While Santa Fe’s not a bastion of Irishness, we do have Irish-oriented entertainment, and the general merriment of a Friday night will have some extra zing. All weekend, there’s lively music at various venues around town. Be sure to check out our calendar to see what fits your mood. For something very different, consider the Annual Bollywood Club Invasion Dance Party at the convention center. There will be DJs spinning Eastern and Western music; videos; henna tattoos; food from Jambo Café; and even dance classes. It’s both a charity event and a party—it doesn’t get better. Shake off the winter blues, even temporarily, and enjoy. The sun is shining.

flamenco fiesta 2017 For three full days, Teatro Paraguas presents Hito–Fude & Sumi-e: Calligraphy and Choreography—Illusions in Arts by Compañia Mina Fajardo and Chuscales during Flamenco Fiesta 2017. Their Japanese-inspired performance comes from hito-fude, described as a single brushstoke, and sumi-e, a fully realized black ink painting comprising hito-fude, as well as the overall gesture of “writing a painting” or “painting a poem.” Fajardo, the artistic director, choreographer, and principal dancer, has received extensive training in numerous types of dance and has performed and taught across the globe. Chuscales, a.k.a. Jose Valle Fajardo, accompanies the dancers on his guitar. Marking its 25th anniversary with performances and master classes, plus an international tour, a behind-the-scenes series, and two world premieres, the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company makes a stop in Santa Fe on March 18. The company will perform in a fundraiser for NDI New Mexico, with an early private reception featuring special guests, including Burgess and Mayor Javier Gonzales. “NDI New Mexico did not exist when I was growing up,” Burgess states. “Today, youth of many backgrounds are benefiting from this important statewide resource that uses dance to build character.” Born in New Mexico, Burgess received his degree in dance from the University of New Mexico, and currently serves as the chair of the department of theater and dance at George Washington University, of which he is also an alumnus. He also functions as a State Cultural Ambassador for the U.S. Department of State. In this position, he and his company have toured more than 30 countries in the last two decades, with a tentative international tour to Panama in the works for the fall.—Amanda Jackson

Lisa Law & Raymond Belcher: Vintage New Mexico Justin’s Frame Designs 1221 Flagman Way editionone.gallery Through March 24 Edition ONE Gallery curates an exhibition of the two New Mexican photographers, presented in the gallery space at Justin’s Frame Designs. Lisa Law shows portraits taken over her 50 years in the state. Known for chronicling the hippie movement in Northern New Mexico, the subjects of Law’s photos range from the immediately recognizable to the unsung. Raymond Belcher continues to explore black-and-white landscape photography, which he still prints using the classic silver gelatin process. He has photographed the Galisteo and Santa Fe areas since the mid-1970s. —Lisa Van Sickle

New Mexico Tapestry Sorrel Sky Gallery 125 W Palace sorrelsky.com Through March 31 In this two-person exhibition, painter Peggy Immel and sculptor Michael Tatom show at Sorrel Sky for March’s First Peggy Immel, Hillside Ramble, Friday Art Walk. oil on canvas, 11 x 14" Immel enrolled in her first oil painting class when she was 10, and now paints en plein air. Her pieces feature earth colors and softened edges, often including architectural elements in the vast landscapes she portrays. Tatom began as a jeweler—an art he still practices—before branching out into bronze. His small-scale animals, measured in inches rather than feet, are recognizable by their simplified, almost abstracted shapes and the varied colors and textures he achieves in their patinas.—LVS

Mark Newport: Mending form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center Through May 20 Mark Newport’s last show at form & concept featured handknit suits for superheroes. Moving from the invincible to the vulnerable, Mending is a series of torn muslin cloths mended with elaborate embroidery, using traditional techniques from Europe and the United States. Newport is intrigued by the idea that misfortune—a tear or injury—can ultimately enhance the damaged object or person. “If you have a stain on your favorite shirt, or a beloved blanket that gets dirty, maybe it’s even better because it lived through something,” he says. “The same goes for that scar on your knee from falling on your bike, or the one on your belly from your burst appendix.”—LVS

While San Ildefonso is commonly associated with striking black-on-black pottery, the Pueblo also has a strong tradition of painting, and was actually home to the first Pueblo painters. The show includes many of these early painters, including Tonita Peña, Romando Vigil, and J. D. Roybal, who worked in the flat style that began at San Ildefonso and was later associated with the Santa Fe Indian School. Adobe Gallery will also include a few paintings by Tony Da, who worked later in the century in a more contemporary style.—LVS
