Now that the trees have new leaves it’s such a pleasure to be outside and enjoying our lovely spring. Last weekend the Canyon Road Spring Art Festival was so pleasant, thanks to Mother Nature. This weekend affords you more outdoor adventure with the Eldorado Studio Tour, happening Saturday and Sunday. I’d like to suggest you spend some time meeting the artists and watching them work on their beautiful creations. This is the first of many such studio tours here in Northern New Mexico, and it’s a great one to kick things off. A studio tour gives you such an intimate look at an artist and their surroundings. When we look at a piece of art, we typically don’t see the working environment that hosted its creation. Is it neat and tidy, or disheveled? It doesn’t seem to have an effect on the final product. I believe that their surroundings offer an artist little gems of inspiration. Maybe it’s the view from the studio, or the cat watching from the chair that gives the artist an idea. Often, artists have cut out and put up little images that they’ve seen and want to keep around for reference. Those small pieces say so much. Have fun in your exploration and more importantly, enjoy meeting the artists and seeing their creative processes and spaces. It’ll be lots of fun in Eldorado this weekend.

Mezzo-soprano Rebecca Robinson takes on the solo in Berlioz’s romantic cantata based on the death of Cleopatra.

BERLIOZ CELEBRATION

BRENT CALIS

PERFORMANCE 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the death of French romantic composer Hector Berlioz, and The Santa Fe Symphony pays him tribute in an all-Berlioz concert. The concert opens with Rêverie et caprice with conductor Guillermo Figueroa as solo violinist and concertmaster David Felberg conducting. Mezzo-soprano Rebecca Robinson is up next in La Mort de Cléopâtre, written for a competition Berlioz entered but did not win. Forgotten until 1903, it has since become a concert hall favorite. After intermission, the symphony returns for Symphonie fantastique. Berlioz used a huge orchestra to tell his tale of obsession, murder, execution, and a witches’ Sabbath, all part of an opium dream. The five-movement symphony is Berlioz’s best-known piece. It was considered groundbreaking at its premiere for its storytelling and orchestral color.—Lisa J. Van Sickle Berlioz Celebration, May 18 at 7 pm and May 19 at 4 pm, $22–$80, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, santafesymphony.org

Eldorado Studio Tour The community of Eldorado, a few miles south of Santa Fe off Hwy 285, consists of around 6,000 residents scattered over 20 square miles of piñon and juniper–covered hills. The Eldorado Arts and Crafts Association puts on the largest studio tour in New Mexico—this year more than 110 artists in 72 studios are participating. A Friday evening reception at the Eldorado Community Center—take the first entrance into Eldorado coming from Santa Fe—opens the 28th annual event on May 17 from 5–7 pm. Artists participating in the tour will show and sell fiber arts, ceramics, paintings, jewelry, recycled art, and creations in almost any other imaginable medium. Meet the artists, look at examples of their work, and pick up a map for the Saturday and Sunday tour. On May 18–19, 10 am–5 pm, the studios will be open to the public. The Preview Gallery at the community center will be open both days from 9 am–5 pm to help you plan your tour.

Ventana Fine Art opens their summer season with an exhibit by Frank Balaam and Angus. Both artists use strong and bright color to portray the natural world. Balaam paints “the energy and passion of trees,” and light filtering through a forest. His gaze is level, neither down towards earth and roots nor up to the tree’s canopy and sky. Raised in the United Kingdom, he now makes his home among the aspens and ponderosa of Eastern Arizona’s mountains. Angus arranges the natural world into still life, with flowers and fruits filling his canvases. The composition is often split with refraction lines, adding unusual dimension to the tableau. Angus was born and raised in Scotland and now makes his home near San Francisco. He also paints the occasional coastal landscape.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

CAROL TIPPIT WOOLWORTH Hat Ranch Gallery 27 San Marcos Rd W, hatranchgallery.org May 19–June 19, Reception May 19, 2–5 pm A short Sunday drive down the Turquoise Trail gets you to Hat Ranch Gallery and Carol Tippit Woolworth’s solo exhibition of paintings. Woolworth describes her oil and gouache paintings as “. . . working towards the abstract figurative.” Whether she is painting horses, landscapes, pottery, or people swimming, her subject matter underlies her brushwork and use of color, the actual subjects of her work. In her artist’s statement Woolworth says, “My paintings attempt to capture an intense moment that rings absolutely true. . . . A search for beauty in the familiar, unseen until revealed by the work. The mundane elevated to art.”—LVS

Dwayne Wilcox, Paper Chief, ledger paper Plains headdress, 32 x 28 x 33"

Dwayne Wilcox (Oglala Lakota) creates work that combines historic narratives of the Lakota people with ironic post-modernism. The artist deals with subject matters such as substance abuse, incarceration, and domestic violence, delving into underlying issues of indigenous identity and collective trauma. His recent ledger drawings, which innovatively stretch the historic medium into three dimensions, spotlight social ills through dark humor and razor-sharp irony. Wilcox currently lives in Rapid City, South Dakota. His work has been exhibited across the country, including at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City.—Sarah Eddy

NORD: INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION KEEP Contemporary, 142 Lincoln , keepcontemporary.com May 17–June 13, Reception May 17, 5–8 pm

Jean-Baptiste Mouton, Ascend, photograph, 22 x 15"

Hailing from icy regions of Norway, Iceland, and Russia, five international photographers explore and combine elements of land, figure, and fantasy in this group show. Their dark and mystical compositions use the biting Nordic landscape as a backdrop for evocative narratives that are at once eerie and enchanting. Photographers Amy Hastlehurst, who explores themes of isolation and melancholia through self-portraiture, and Benjamin Hardman, who is drawn to obscure and barren environments, are both Australians currently residing in Iceland. Jean-Baptiste Mouton, a French artist living in Norway, creates work infused with religious themes. Russian Natalia Drepina focuses on bleak and emotional female portraits while Norwegian Daria Endresen creates darkly surreal dreamscapes.—SE May 16, 2019 NOW 13
