While your tummies are full of fabulous Thanksgiving dinner, it will feel good to get off the couch and enjoy this long weekend with so much happening in Santa Fe. Friday evening is the traditional annual lighting of the holiday decorations on the Plaza. Santa will be there as well, making this an especially fun family event. On Friday afternoon and evening, Santa Fe handles Black Friday in a unique way—with one-of-a-kind arts. By checking our calendar listings, you’ll see a variety of gallery events, including the Last Friday Artwalk in the Railyard, where William Siegal Galllery is presenting their final contemporary show. Circus Luminous, a contemporary circus theater, is presenting She Shines Brightly at the Lensic Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Rest assured that there’s plenty of nightlife this weekend, too, with many theatrical and musical acts. And if you have family in town, this is a wonderful weekend to visit some of the many museums here in our city. The weather looks good for the next few days, so come on out and enjoy the City Different on this luxuriously long weekend.

museum reopens: 100th anniversary The New Mexico Museum of Art has been closed for the last two months, getting spiffed up for its birthday. The building first opened for a dedication ceremony on November 24, 1917, and it will reopen 100 years and a day later. All day Saturday, the museum, the surrounding streets, and the Plaza will be full of activities celebrating a century of art downtown. Events include lowriders and vintage cars on the streets, theatrical performances in St. Francis auditorium, and interpreters dressed as figures like Georgia O’Keeffe and Will Shuster roaming the galleries. The museum opens three new exhibits Saturday, all examining facets of the last century of art in New Mexico and looking at the museum’s past and future roles within the community.—Lisa Van Sickle courtesy new mexico museum of art

holiday lights on the Plaza In Santa Fe, the holiday season begins when the lights around the Plaza are lit. From placing the electric farolitos around the portales by the Plaza to stringing the 10,000 multicolored lights on the huge Plaza trees, city employees spend three to four weeks readying the Plaza. On Friday the public is invited downtown for the lighting ceremony. Music on the bandstand starts around 3 pm; local Girl Scouts serve cookies and cocoa; volunteers set out and light an additional 1000 candle-lit farolitos; and Santa makes a dramatic appearance at 4 pm. At 6 pm, Mayor Gonzales and other dignitaries preside over a countdown to the flipping of the switch, turning on the lights and making the Plaza merry and bright.—LVS ev ent

book signing e v ent Photographer Laura Gilpin (1891– 1988) is the subject of a new book by Sina Brush, illustrated with photos by J. B. Smith. Brush worked alongside Gilpin during the last six years of the photographer’s life, and Working With Above: Sina Brush’s new book about Laura Gilpin is flush Laura Gilpin, Photographer with images of the photographer, taken by J. B. Smith. is her view of Gilpin and her contemporaries. Smith, a friend of Gilpin and a fellow photographer, contributed 59 photos of the artist, her home, and her work. Both Brush and Smith will sign copies of the book and answer questions. Raised in the West and educated in the East, Gilpin pursued careers in violin and turkey farming along the way to becoming a renowned photographer. Gilpin is best remembered for her book The Enduring Navaho, photos taken on the Navajo reservation in the 1930s and 1950s, and for her unmatched skill at making platinum prints.—LVS

Thais Mather, Plutocracy, altered found objects, 12 x 20 x 9"

Reckless Abandon form & concept formandconcept.center 435 S Guadalupe November 24–February 18 Reception November 24, 5–7 pm

Thais Mather is an artist, ardent feminist, and passionate environmentalist. She weaves these threads into her first solo exhibition, Reckless Abandon, in her hometown of Santa Fe. The show will include ceramics, drawing, printmaking, and performance art. While Mather shares the common perception that this is a time of great change and upheaval, she has hope for positive change. She says, “I think people are getting these catastrophic feelings, that this is the end. I don’t believe in that. I think this is a beginning.” Her hope is that outdated patriarchal structures will fall, clearing the way for a new paradigm to arise. The show is her call to action.—Lisa Van Sickle

Fritz Scholder: Indian Series Lithographs Adobe Gallery adobegallery.com 221 Canyon Through November 30 The late Fritz Scholder is a study in contradictions. Although he was an enrolled member of California’s Luiseño tribe, and was one-quarter Luiseño, he repeatedly said that he was not Native. Many of his teachers were Native—Oscar Howe (Yanktonai), Charles Loloma (Hopi)—but others, such as Wayne Thiebaud, were not. An early instructor at Institute of American Arts, Scholder was a huge influence on the students who studied with him during his tenure, 1964–1969. Likewise, the students were a major influence on Scholder. In 1970, the Tamarind Institute, a lithography workshop, arrived in Albuquerque from Los Angeles. Fritz Scholder was the first artist invited to produce a series of prints at the new shop. These first lithographs, Indians Forever, were far removed from the typical, romanticized portrayals of Indigenous peoples, and they cemented Scholder’s reputation as a major force in contemporary art. Plein Air Painters of New Mexico National Juried Members Show Sorrel Sky Gallery sorrelsky.com 125 W Palace Through November 26 For the second consecutive year, Sorrel Sky Gallery is hosting the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) National Juried Members Show. Awards were given in several categories, and winning paintings in oil, pastel, and watercolor are on display. An oil by Peter Grab, Snow on the Sangres, won Best of Show 2017, and Jason Sacran, Lisa Flynn, Thomas Wezwick, and Val Mouttet are among the other award winners. Greg English and Sandy Graves Worrell Gallery worrellgallery.com 103 Washington Through November 30 Worrell Gallery presents a show for two Western artists. Bronze sculptor Sandy Graves hails from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She pushes, pulls, and elongates the forms of her animal subject matter. Graves often ends up with more negative than positive space in a piece, giving it the look of a quick but skilled bronze sketch. Greg English takes the opposite tack. His paintings of Native American pottery, baskets, and artifacts show even the tiniest details. English’s mother is a painter, and by the age of 10 he had caught the bug, drawing everything around him.
