IT’S OFFICIAL! SKI SANTA FE and Taos Ski Valley are both opening on Thanksgiving Day, following a series of storms that brought us early snow. As a skier, I’m taking this as a very good sign for the season. All these cold days serve a useful purpose. Skiing on Thanksgiving morning is a wonderful tradition that is only possible in Santa Fe during the “better” snow years. Being able to enjoy the great outdoors over the holiday weekend is truly a blessing. Needless to say, we have many other reasons to be thankful for the mountain snow. Should you not be one to hear the mountain’s call, enjoying the view of the white-capped Sangre de Cristos adds to the colorful backdrop of Santa Fe. Not a day goes by that I don’t drink in the incredible beauty of those mountains. It’s a scene we get to enjoy each and every day as we move around our city. Enjoy these first wintry days and the special beauty they give our city, and remember to count the many reasons to be thankful. Have a wonderful holiday.

EVENT Northern New Mexico is home to an active fiber arts community. The sixth annual Fall Fiber Fiesta, held at the Scottish Rite Center, is an opportunity to see what the fiber folks have been making. The Fall Fiber Fiesta opens with a ticketed reception Friday evening, November 16. Music, refreshments, and locally produced wine are included in the $10 admission fee, plus a chance to meet the artists and have first crack at shopping. Saturday and Sunday feature free admission along with demonstrations of fiber arts techniques. The event is sponsored by the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center, a nonprofit that promotes and preserves weaving traditions and fiber arts skills in New Mexico.—Lisa J. Handel’s Messiah

Eric Melear

Soprano Hailey Clark is one of the soloists in Messiah, the 276-year-old holiday tradition.

performance The Santa Fe Symphony and The Symphony Chorus give two performances of Messiah, George Frideric Handel’s monumental oratorio. Written in only 24 days, the piece has a long history. Messiah’s premiere was given for charity, in Dublin in 1742, and the performance raised enough money to free 142 men from debtor’s prison. Messiah is believed to have been performed yearly since 1750, never falling into disfavor. Although intended for the Easter season, it has become a Christmas staple. Four soloists—Hailey Clark, soprano, Daryl Freedman, mezzo-soprano, John Tiranno, tenor, and Joseph Beutel, bass—join the orchestra and chorus for the 53 arias, recitatives, and choruses that make up the oratorio. The symphony’s principal conductor, Guillermo Figueroa, is on the podium, and the chorus was prepared by their new director, Carmen Flórez-Mansi.—LVS Messiah, November 17 at 7 pm and November 18 at 4 pm, $22–$80, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, santafesymphony.org

Circus Luminous While The City Different shares holiday performance traditions with the rest of the country—Messiah, The Nutcracker, concerts of carols—there’s one tradition that is strictly Santa Fe’s. Each Thanksgiving weekend since 2003, the Lensic stage is home to Circus Luminous, an original production from Wise Fool New Mexico and their collaborators. This year’s circus is titled Clown Alchemy, and it follows six red-nosed clowns as they confront today’s difficult topics: school violence, immigration rights, women’s rights, trans issues, and more. Acrobats, aerialists, dancers, and the clowns meet life in 2018 with love, compassion, and humor. As usual, the show is performed to live music and an original score.—LVS Circus Luminous: Clown Alchemy, November 23 at 7 pm, November 24 at 2 pm and 7 pm, and November 25 at 4 pm, $20–$45 adults, $12–$27 ages 12 and under, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, ticketssantafe.com

The performers in Clown Alchemy take on modernday social issues in this year’s Circus Luminous.

PREVIEWS

Left: Phyllis Kapp, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, watercolor on paper, 38 x 28"

The Miracles of Land and Sky Pippin Contemporary 409 Canyon pippincontemporary.com November 21–December 5 Reception November 23, 5–7 pm Retirement from the gallery business did not mean retirement from painting for Phyllis Kapp. She closed Waxlander Gallery in 2017 after more than 30 years in business. Rather than putting her feet up, Kapp, now 87, continues to pour her energy into painting the Southwestern landscape she has always loved. Kapp paints in watercolor, although the deeply saturated blues and magentas that fill her paper are not always associated with that medium. No pale, watery landscapes here—Kapp’s watercolor paintings are every bit as rich as the sun, sky, and land of the Southwest.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

Hidden Treasures: Rebecca Tobey Retrospective Ventana Fine Art 400 Canyon ventanafineart.com November 23–December 5 Reception November 23, 4–7 pm Rebecca Tobey recently reached two major milestones—her 70th birthday and her 30th year as a sculptor. Ventana Fine Art helps Tobey celebrate with a show of 30 sculptures from her personal collection, including bronze editions that sold out and one-of-akind ceramic pieces. Tobey got her start in sculpture when she met her late husband Gene, a potter. The pair moved away from functional ceramics and collaborated on a series of animal sculptures, first in ceramic and later in bronze. Gene Tobey passed away in 2006, and Rebecca continues to work in the style the couple developed. The sculptures’ shapes are simplified and stylized, often decorated with color, pattern, and representations of other animals. The show at Ventana includes both collaborative pieces and examples of the work Rebecca Tobey has done on her own.—LVS

Taos 6 Group Show Manitou Galleries 225 Canyon manitougalleries.com November 16–December 10 Reception November 16, 5–7:30 pm Taos has been a haven for artists since the early 1900s. The founding of the Taos Society of Artists in 1915, with six original members, helped cement the town’s reputation as a center for the arts. The short-lived Society—it disbanded in 1927—is echoed in Taos 6 Group Show at Manitou Galleries’ exhibit at their Canyon Road location. Miguel Martinez, a Taoseño since birth, is known for his large paintings of women’s faces, dark-haired and large-eyed. Jerry Jordan fell in love with Taos when he was 19 years old. It took more than 20 years, but he now lives there, and Taos is the subject of most of his paintings. Don Brackett and P.J. Garoutte have been married for more than 40 years, have lived in Taos for 30, and both show oil paintings. Jeff Cochran has “only” been in Taos for 20 years. First gaining attention for paintings of chimpanzees, he now portrays the Taos landscape. Jd Challenger is the sixth artist in the show, known for his detailed paintings of Native Americans in traditional dress.—LVS
