THIS TIME OF YEAR is the best of all worlds in Santa Fe. The weather is sunny and seasonal in town, yet snow and winter sports are off to a wonderful start up in the mountains. We are enjoying what is arguably some of the best snow in the Rockies at the moment, and there’s a good chance we’ll have a few more inches before the week is out. Here in town, things are hopping; Santa Fe is certainly not experiencing a “low season.” The town remains busy, and the nightlife and gallery worlds are spinning in good directions. I’m excited about Mill Contemporary’s opening on Friday night, November 30; next weekend, the wonderful Santa Fe Symphony will be performing on December 9. Of course, there’s lots of music in the clubs all over town, and a number of galleries are having openings in the coming weeks—all noted right here in Santa Fean NOW. If you haven’t yet ventured into Tonic, Santa Fe’s jazz club, recently heralded as the best-designed bar in New Mexico, make a point of going. Not only will you be treated to fine jazz, but you’ll be part of yet another Santa Fe creative experience. Don’t just stay on the couch—get out and do something!

Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival

Modern Casualties, by Bill Skrips, incorporates salvaged metal and discarded children’s toys.

Touted as the hippest, eco-conscious weekend art market, the 20th annual Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival brings to town not only an art market with 75–85 vendors, but also the popular trash fashion and costume contest, and a juried art exhibition for both students and adults. The trash fashion show takes place on Friday, November 30, 7 pm, at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. Designs are made up of at least 75 percent recycled or reused materials. Former participants and past winners of this event have gone on to study at famous design schools such as Parsons School of Design, London College of Fashion, and others. —Amanda N. Pitman FESTIVAL

TERRANCE CLIFFORD

The TEN Tenors

Chanukah on the Plaza features the lighting of a giant menorah. Here, Rabbi Berel Levertov, spiritual leader of Santa Fe Jewish Center—Chabad, does the honors.

PERFORMANCE Ever since The Three Tenors (Pavarotti, Domingo, and Carreras) wowed soccer fans at a World Cup concert in 1990, operatic tenors have enjoyed joining forces to sing. Lensic Presents The TEN Tenors in Home for the Holidays, a concert of sacred and secular holiday favorites sung in classical and contemporary styles. Hailing from Australia, The TEN Tenors have performed for sold-out houses around the world since 1995. Like their predecessors, The TEN Tenors support charity with their voices. United States sales of Our Christmas Wish, a holiday album, have raised over $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

The TEN Tenors, December 4, 7:30 pm, $39–$65, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, ticketssantafe.org.

Chanukah on the Plaza Celebrate Chanukah with the folks from the Santa Fe Jewish Center—Chabad on Sunday, December 2. Trapeze and aerial silk artists Aerial Aura perform on the Plaza, along with Los Klezmerados de Santa Fe, a four-piece band playing music with roots in the Jewish traditions of Eastern Europe. Latkes (potato pancakes), gelt (chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil), and hot chocolate add to the celebration. This year, Mayor Alan Webber lights the giant menorah.—LVS Chanukah on the Plaza, December 2, 3 pm, free, Santa Fe Plaza, santafejcc.com Australian vocal ensemble The TEN Tenors appears in a holiday concert at the Lensic.

It’s a long way from London, one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, to the unincorporated community of San Patricio in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Peter Rogers (1933–2018) was establishing himself as a successful painter in London, his birthplace. While living for a time in Spain in the early 1960s, Rogers met Carol Hurd, daughter of Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd and a painter in her own right. Hurd returned to San Patricio, Rogers came for a visit, married Hurd, and spent the rest of his life in New Mexico. Rogers was an adept portrait painter, and he made a living through commissions of portraits and other works. His lifetime labor of love, though, was a series he called Artist’s Quest, allegorical paintings exploring the piritual side of life. This exhibit includes 12 paintings from the series, the final paintings Rogers completed before his death on May 28 of this year.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

Gene Kloss: New Mexico Etched in Time LewAllen Galleries 1613 Paseo de Peralta lewallengalleries.com December 7–January 5 Reception December 7, 5–7 pm It’s a commentary on the times that when Alice Geneva Glasier married Phillips W. Kloss in 1925, she changed her name to Gene Kloss (1903–1996). At the beginning of what proved to be an illustrious career as a printmaker, Kloss wanted her work to be seen without her gender coloring anyone’s judgment. Traveling from California, the Klosses’ honeymoon included camping for two weeks in Taos Canyon, Gene’s 60-pound printing press in tow. The Klosses returned to Taos regularly, finally moving there permanently in 1960. Kloss found early success in the art world, and by the mid-1930s she was exhibiting across the United States. Her depictions of Pueblo life and ceremonies of Northern New Mexico’s Penitentes are still among her most popular prints.—LVS

Fifth Annual Guadalupe Group Art Show Eye on the Mountain Gallery 614 Agua Fria eyeonthemountaingallery.com December 8–February 17 Reception December 8, 5–7 pm Eye on the Mountain Gallery presents 20 artists showing work inspired by Our Lady of Guadalupe. Paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and textiles are among the mediums used by this group of diverse artists. The gallery is just a couple of blocks west of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the oldest standing shrine to Our Lady in the United States, built in 1777. Images of Guadalupe are common in Northern New Mexico, and this show gathers new work on the old theme in one exhibit.—LVS
