THE HISTORIC CANYON ROAD Paint & Sculpt Out returns for a true Santa Fe celebration of autumn. The free event on Saturday, October 20, invites you to walk up Canyon Road and visit with artists as they work and get a better understanding of the artistic process. The backdrop of changing leaves in the historic neighborhood adds magic to the day. Creative people find inspiration in different places. Something they see, hear, or feel generates an idea that becomes the focus of their creative process. Being around the artists on Saturday, you will see what triggers them, what inspires them to create something beautiful. It’s also your opportunity to look about you and be inspired by what you are seeing, not just on the easels but also in the color of the trees and sky and by the way the light shimmers through the cottonwoods. We can all feel winter just around the corner. This weekend is the perfect time to enjoy autumn as only Santa Fe can deliver.

PUT SOME FUN
Oct 18 – Oct 31
Women of Distinction Santa Fe Pro Musica (SFPM) has a history of performing compositions by women. Since 1982 they have programmed 35 works by 23 female composers, and SFPM officially launched its Women Composers Project in 2013. SFPM welcomes three female guest conductors—a rarity—during their 2018–2019 season. This year, SFPM kicks off its Women of Distinction Leadership Initiative with a keynote address by Jane Chu. Chu chaired the National Endowment for the Arts from 2014–2018 and is currently the arts adviser to PBS. She will speak about the state of the arts in the United States, then will be joined onstage by Thomas O’Connor, SFPM’s longtime music director, for a discussion about women in the arts.—Lisa J. Van Sickle EVENT

FUNDRAISER
Día de los Perros (day of the dogs) is the theme for the 2018 Barkin’ Ball, October 26, hosted by the Santa Fe Animal Shelter (SFAS), a private 501(c)(3). The annual Barkin’ Ball is a major source of funding for the SFAS, and the only gala in town where Fido is also welcome to attend! This year’s music is provided by Nacha Mendez, and a full Latin theme will be in effect with music, food, and drink to accompany the festivities. Full tables for 10 are available for this event, but don’t delay, the Ball sells out in advance. Wear your best Santa Fe party attire and help support the homeless animals of Northern New Mexico’s largest open-admission, no-kill shelter. —Amanda N. Pitman Barkin’ Ball, Día de los Perros, October 26, 5:30 pm, $175 per person, Farmers Market Pavilion, 1607 Paseo de Peralta, barkinball.org
GiG Performance Space seats about a tenth of the people the Lensic holds, a symphony orchestra won’t fit on its stage, and stadium-sized speakers would blow the roof off. In other words, it’s the perfect place to hear acoustic music in an intimate space. Director Bruce Dunlap has four performances scheduled at GiG in a week’s time. Margaret Burke has played plenty of gigs around Santa Fe in other people’s bands. On October 20th she gives a concert celebrating her own CD, joined by Josh Martin, another fixture of the Santa Fe music scene, and Sharon Gilchrist, a former Santa Fean with a national reputation as a mandolinist. October Guitarist Richard Smith plays at GiG Performance Space on 24th, AMP Concerts brings the Hot Friday, October 26. Club of Cowtown to GiG. They’re exactly what their name implies— Django Reinhardt meets Bob Wills. Guitarist Richard Smith pulls in on Friday, the 26th, playing everything from jazz to classical to Sousa marches. Folk singer Tracy Grammer, who has toured with Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter, performs on Saturday, October 27, to support Low Tide, her new CD of original songs.— LVS

The Audacity of Art: Art for the Midterm Elections galleryFRITZ 540 S Guadalupe galleryfritz.com October 26–November 26 Reception October 26, 5–7 pm
Absolutely everyone in the United States would agree on one thing: that we are living in politically charged times. With midterm elections coming up the first week of November, political discussions, arguments, and advertising have reached fever pitch. To add to the discourse, galleryFRITZ is mounting a show of politically charged art. Thirteen artists with diverse views on race, immigration, the environment, #MeToo, and other loaded topics have created pieces for the show. Participating artists include Frank Buffalo Hyde, Ben Steele, Dorielle Caimi, and Susanna Carlisle + Bruce Hamilton. During the run of the show, galleryFRITZ hosts a series of political discussions to further explore the issues raised in the exhibition. Contact the gallery for details.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

PREVIEWS
Above: Donald Woodman, Belen East River Looking North, archival pigment print, 31 x 92"
Horizons: Photographs by Donald Woodman JFD Gallery 1221 Flagman Way jfdgallery.com Through November 30 JFD Gallery and Edition ONE present large-format landscape photography by Donald Woodman. Woodman has had a storied career as a photographer and teacher, and as an assistant to other artists, including seven years working closely with noted American minimalist Agnes Martin. Photos in this exhibit are as large as 14 feet wide, and they show the Southwestern landscape. “For most of my career, New Mexico has provided me with a respite from some of the unbearable excesses of civilization,” says Woodman. “I have chosen to stay out of the limelight in order to preserve the freedom to pursue my personal vision.” Technically sophisticated and unafraid of beauty, the Belen resident portrays the land he calls home.—LVS

Artistic Destiny Brad Smith Gallery 812 Canyon bradsmithgallery.com October 20, 10 am –5 pm Some people just have to make things, and Brad Smith counts himself among that number. As a preschooler he won the Thanksgiving drawing contest with a large, colorful turkey, and he claims, “I don’t think my style has changed much since, so I was always an artist from my earliest memory.” The title of Smith’s show reflects his conviction that living and painting in Santa Fe is his destiny. As an adult, Smith continued to paint while working as a professional musician. A move from Dallas to Santa Fe in 2000 allowed him to put painting first. Smith works in both oil and watercolor, and he paints portraits, landscapes, animals, and the occasional abstract. He is particularly known for his paintings of women. During the Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out, Smith will be painting at his gallery.—LVS

Spanish painter Giner Bueno travels to Santa Fe and Gallery 901 for what will likely be his last major exhibition in the United States. Bueno was born in 1935 to a father, Luis Giner Vallas, who was an acclaimed artist. At the age of 12, Bueno was given a set of paints and invited to join his father and his father’s friends as they painted. Formal training in Valencia and Paris followed. Bueno paints the villages and beaches along the Valencian coast. His deeply impressionistic oils portray sun and sand, water and people, “. . . the joy of our beaches, of our festivals and of the life of the villages in the interior of our arid and rugged Valencia.”—LVS Barbara Hendricks Tresa Vorenberg Goldsmiths 656 Canyon tvgoldsmiths.com October 27–November 30 Reception October 27, 3–5 pm Goldsmith Barbara Hendricks is making the trip from her studio in California to Canyon Road to present a collection of her jewelry. One of the jewelers regularly represented at Tresa Vorenberg Goldsmiths, Hendricks shows her work across the country to wide acclaim. Her designs are sleek, often geometric, executed in highly polished gold. Hendricks favors colored stones or pearls, both white and naturally colored, usually accented with diamonds. The look is classic and contemporary, unfussy and elegant.—LVS October 18, 2018 NOW 13
