Things are heating up in Santa Fe and the temperatures will soon follow. Tomorrow night is the first Friday of the month, and a group of Downtown merchants are staying open until 7 pm for the inaugural First Friday celebration. There are a number of Downtown gallery openings as well. Especially noteworthy is David Rothermel’s show at his new gallery. On Canyon Road, Winterowd Fine Art hosts an opening for longtime Santa Fe artist Jamie Kirkland and GF Contemporary has a group show entitled ALT Placement. Ernesto Gutierrez marks 40 years of exhibiting in Santa Fe with a reception at Acosta Strong, and Ventana celebrates three women who show there. As for music, John Paul White, a Grammy-winning Americana guitarist will be playing at the Railyard Saturday night in the season’s first Levitt AMP Santa Fe Music Series concert, and jazz trumpeter Christine Fawson opens Music on the Hill’s 2019 season. Yes, if you don’t know it already, I’m here to shout it loudly—Santa Fe has more free public music than any city I’m aware of. The quality and quantity of free concerts we get to enjoy is really amazing. There’s a lot to do this week. I hope you peruse our pages online or in print and find the perfect activities for you.

CURRENTS New Media Festival

Challenge New Mexico puts on one of the city’s largest arts and crafts fairs.

Challenge New Mexico Arts & Crafts Festival

EVENT One of the year’s biggest arts and crafts fairs fills the Plaza June 8–9. More than 150 artisans come from across the country to show and sell at the annual juried show of painting, photography, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, clothing, and just about anything else imaginable. Items are available to suit all tastes and pocketbooks. Better yet, this 41st annual show supports Challenge New Mexico (CNM). The organization was founded in 1957 to provide support and services for children and adults with physical, intellectual, and emotional disabilities. Currently, that takes the form of therapeutic horseback riding. CNM has found that anyone from an elder with Parkinson’s to a child with autism can benefit from their program. Shakespeare in the Garden

PERFORMANCE Few things compare to a summer’s day, but an early-summer evening of Shakespeare in the blooming Santa Fe Botanical Garden might be one of them. Following productions of The Tempest in 2017 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2018, this year features one of the legendary playwrights most evocative and influential works: the lyric tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The Botanical Garden is open for picnicking at 5:30 pm and performances begin promptly at 7 pm in the garden’s amphitheater. The show is presented by Santa Fe Classic Theater in association with The Shakespeare Guild and directed by Patrick Briggs. Shakespeare in the Garden 2019: Romeo and Juliet, nightly through June 9, 7 pm, $10–$45, Santa Fe Botanical Garden, 715 Camino Lejo, santafebotanicalgarden.org

PREVIEWS

ALT Placement GF Contemporary 707 Canyon gfcontemporary.com June 7–21 Reception June 7, 5–7 pm

Right: Kathleen McCloud, Rona’s Flight, paper and mixed media mounted on wood, 66 x 34"

There’s more to hanging art than just putting a nail into the wall. The group show ALT Placement is designed to show how the placement of an artwork affects the viewer’s reaction. Using work by Pascal Pierme, Jordan West, Michael Wilding, Katie Metz, Kathleen McCloud, and other artists, the show will demonstrate the effects of light and shadow, reflection, and balance, and will look at the challenges of displaying non-rectangular artwork. The exhibit will also delve into the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence, ancient mathematical concepts of balance and harmony.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

David Rothermel: Layers David Rothermel Contemporary 228 Old Santa Fe Trl drcontemporary.com June 7–28 Reception June 7, 5–7 pm

David Rothermel Contemporary, formerly on the corner of Lincoln and Marcy, has reopened in a new location on Old Santa Fe Trail. The individual panels that make up Rothermel’s abstract paintings are each layered with multiple colors of paint, giving them depth, variation, and texture. This show invites the viewer to look past the surface and take in the underpainting and how it adds to the subtlety and complexity of the finished piece, and to savor the “. . . suspended transparencies which have been used by the great artists of history.”—LVS Above: David Rothermel, Wabash, acrylic on panel, 26 x 38"

Night and Day: Recent Landscape Paintings 7Arts Gallery 125 Lincoln 7arts.gallery June 2–30 Reception June 7, 5–7 pm

Nancy Silvia’s pastel landscapes are soft-edged and peaceful. Her recent work tracks the ephemeral qualities of light and atmosphere from daytime to dusk. From the glow of Ghost Ranch’s red rock cliffs at the golden hour to the pale hues of the fading New Mexico sunset, this body of work is a comprehensive survey of the ever-changing local lightscape. Silvia grew up in Connecticut and attended the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University. She has exhibited across the United States and Japan and currently resides in Santa Fe.—Sarah Eddy Left: Nancy Silvia, Last Light on Ghost Ranch, pastel on paper, 19 x 26" 12

Jamie Kirkland: Where the Earth Meets the Sky

PREVIEWS

Winterowd Fine Art 701 Canyon fineartsantafe.com June 7–27 Reception June 7, 5–7 pm

Jamie Kirkland paints expansive, minimalist landscapes. Grounded by open fields and distant mountains, her work highlights the transitory quality of changing skyscapes, swept by passing clouds and pulled by sheets of rain. Her harmonious color palette evokes a sense of calm, expansive quiet. Kirkland has been painting in Santa Fe for 15 years. “I grew up in the South, where the forest and tree canopy obscured my view,” she says. “Arriving here to New Mexico, where the earth meets the sky, I discovered a never-ending movie: wide expanses of horizon, clouds speeding through the atmosphere, mountains heavy with early morning mist, walking rain, and dazzling, changing light.”—SE

Don Brackett, Jim Eppler, and Jerry Jordan Manitou Galleries 123 W Palace manitougalleries.com June 7–30 Reception June 7, 5–7:30 pm The three artists in the show at Manitou Galleries’ Downtown location have quite a bit in common. All three men are native to the Southwest—Brackett grew up in Albuquerque, Eppler and Jordan in West Texas. Each one took up art at an early age and stuck with it. Even though these men are past what is considered retirement age, all three are avidly working in their studios. Brackett paints the landscape around his Taos home, with skies at sunset a favorite motif. He often paints on location. Jordan is also a Taoseño, having fallen in love with the town as a teen. He portrays the people and architecture of Taos Pueblo using thick paint and strong brushwork. Eppler paints and sculpts. Manitou carries his bronzes, birds and animals of the Southwest.—LVS

Women at the Top: Margaret Nes, Mary Silverwood, and Rebecca Tobey Ventana Fine Art 400 Canyon ventanafineart.com June 7–16 Reception June, 5–7 pm

Above: Mary Silverwood, Azur Layers, pastel on paper, 22 x 26"

This exhibition honors the work of three women who have attained great heights in the world of art. Pastel paintings newly released from the estate of Mary Silverwood (1937–2011) sit beside new pastels by Margaret Nes while bronze and ceramic sculptures by Rebecca Tobey round out the show. Silverwood captured New Mexico’s ever-changing skies and landscapes on black rag paper. Nes’s powerful compositions deftly distill the Southwest’s natural and manmade forms into bold lines and color. Tobey’s sculptures are animals covered in intriguing and narrative-rich images and patterns, reflecting her affinity for the natural world.—SE June 6, 2019 NOW 13
