PUBLISHER’S NOTE

WHILE THE SNOW on the mountains is an encouraging sign of our ski season, just around the corner, there’s so much else we can do in these pre-Thanksgiving days. Fortunately, the weather has been cooperative for outdoor activities like hiking on the lower elevation trails. You don’t have to worry about being too hot now. I especially recommend the Tent Rocks trail, as the view looking down the Rio Grande Valley with the colorful leaves is just spectacular. If you are looking for more indoor activities, our calendar has a ton of ideas. The museums all have interesting displays going on and the music scene is very active this weekend. I especially want to encourage you to consider the George Adelo Memorial concert at Skylight on Friday night. George was such a figure in the music scene in this town and was often on the Plaza for the summer music series. He was another noteworthy Santa Fe “character” who we all cherish in this community. This should be a very special show. Regardless of what you do, get out there and enjoy yourself. It’s such a beautiful time of year, and we have the town to ourselves.

Guns to Art Benefit Show The gallery form & concept hosts an exhibition and auction to benefit scholarships in art and welding for Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) and the 501(c)3 organization New Above: Artist Corey Pickett Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence made Rimfire 2 out of non(NMPGV). The pairing is not as lethal wood, foam, and odd as it might sound. NMPGV has fabric for Guns to Art. sponsored gun buybacks, which are opportunities for citizens to turn in unwanted firearms to law enforcement. When the art department at SFCC offered to take some of the unwanted guns and turn them into gardening tools, other classes at SFCC joined in, turning the weapons into sculpture and jewelry. form & concept is also showing work from artists across the world reflecting on the prevention of gun violence. The show, which opened November 7, has pieces for sale through an online silent auction, running through November 17. A reception and live auction on the 17th will conclude the event. Proceeds will be used by NMPGV to promote responsible ownership of firearms and to discourage gun violence. SFCC will fund scholarships in art and welding.—LVS
Cécile McLorin Salvant Singer Cécile McLorin Salvant didn’t set out to conquer the jazz world. Daughter of a Haitian father and a French mother, Salvant had originally planned on developing a classical voice. She moved to Aix-enProvence, France, to study classical and Baroque vocal performance, along with law. Within two years, after a series of jazz performances in Paris, she recorded her first jazz album in 2009. She won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010, garnered a Grammy nomination in 2014 for her second album, and in 2016 won the Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy for her third, For One to Love. Performance Santa Fe brings Salvant to the Lensic on Wednesday, November 15. Having won praise from no less than The New Yorker, the Los Angeles Times, and Wynton Marsalis, this 28-year-old singer is one you will be hearing about for decades to come.—Lisa Van Sickle P ERF ORMA N CE

L. A. Dance Project
MARK FITTON
Combining an operatic vocal range with insightful interpretation, Cécile McLorin Salvant is the talk of the jazz world. See her Wednesday.
P E RFO RM A N CE L. A. Dance Project’s website opens with the unequivocal comment from ballet impresario George Balanchine when he was asked about ballet’s potential for success in Los Angeles: “No hope.” Were Balanchine still alive, he might have to reconsider. L. A. Dance Project was founded in 2012 by choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied, whose company’s mission is to champion new work and to revisit important dance collaborations from the past. Millepied often works with living composers, and his choreography credits include works for ballets across Europe and the United States, including New York City Ballet, where Balanchine was a cofounder. Wednesday at the Lensic will be an evening of new dance.—LVS

Rendezvous With Light photo-eye Gallery 541 S Guadalupe photoeye.com November 17– December 31 Reception November 17, 5–7 pm
Juxtaposing works by represented artists David H. Gibson and Chaco Terada, Rendezvous With Light explores notions of light, time, space, and origin through the artists’ use of similar natural themes. These photographs—meditative, poetic, and otherworldly—are rendered in two different media. Gibson produces silver gelatin prints, pigment ink prints, and handmade artist books, while Terada’s process applies imagery on multiple layers of opaque silk, sometimes incorporating calligraphic brushstrokes with traditional Japanese inks. Gibson’s images have been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions and reside in numerous public and corporate collections. His photographs encourage the viewer to develop a near reverence for place and light and emphasize his devotion to the art of printmaking. Terada, though originally trained in calligraphy, discovered photography after moving to the United States, and endeavors to incorporate the two into one-of-a-kind artworks. Her pieces have been exhibited worldwide.—Amanda N. Pitman November 9, 2017 NOW 13

PREVIEWS
Below: Wookjae Maeng, Hiding—Nyala, porcelain and wood, 11 x 11 x 24"
Wookjae Maeng: BALANCE form & concept formandconcept.center 435 S Guadalupe Through December 23 Wookjae Maeng, a ceramicist from Seoul, South Korea, brings his provocative porcelain animal sculptures to form & concept. His sculptures, often just of an animal’s head, mounted on wood like a hunter’s trophy, portray the wildlife of the world, with an occasional puppy or human form thrown into the mix. Highly realistic in form, the white of the porcelain and the geometric textures and patterns of the surfaces give them a concurrent sense of unreality. Maeng is an ardent environmentalist, aware of the increasingly negative effect humankind has had upon the animal kingdom. His hope is that his sculpture will cause viewers to empathize, at least momentarily, with animals. Maeng says, “In my work I hope to provide an opportunity—however brief—for modern man to consider the realities of the environment in which he exists, even as he continues his daily existence indifferent to it.”—Lisa Van Sickle

Greg English and Sandy Graves Worrell Gallery worrellgallery.com 103 Washington Through November 30 Worrell Gallery presents a show for two Western artists. Bronze sculptor Sandy Graves hails from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She pushes, pulls, and elongates the forms of her animal subject matter. Graves often ends up with more negative than positive space in a piece, giving it the look of a quick but skilled bronze sketch. Greg English takes the opposite tack. His paintings of Native American pottery, baskets, and artifacts show even the tiniest details. English’s mother is a painter, and by the age of 10 he had caught the bug, drawing everything around him. Now an oil painter, English’s paintings are filled with warmth and appreciation for his Southwestern subjects.—LVS
UNTHEMED natasha SANTA FE natashasantafe.com 403 S Guadalupe Through November 22 For this group show, gallery owner Natasha Nargis decided to forgo any sort of theme. She instead chose to let artists whose work she wanted to exhibit have free rein to create and present what interests them. Nargis herself is a weaver, fashion designer, and longtime Santa Fean. She will have several new pieces in the show. Also expected are Broken Dream Catchers from Penny Spring, new photographs by Cissie Ludlow, a kimono woven by Karim Jaekel, masks by Derge Eklund, and images of hands by Eleuterio Santiago Diaz. In other words, expect some of everything.—LVS
