I RECENTLY ATTENDED a performance at The Santa Fe Opera and wanted to share the joy of the experience. Since I’m not much of an opera fan, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, and I recommend that you try it as I did. Bring your love of music and allow yourself to be wowed by the pageantry, costumes, sets, and the incredible musicians and performers. No need to know another language—the electronic subtitles let you follow the story easily. There’s a very special bonus at The Santa Fe Opera: Its location, perched on the ridge, has stupendous views. I was treated to a pink western sunset and a lightning storm as the performance began. This is “First Friday,” which means the best gallery openings are happening all over town. Friday night’s offerings include some of Santa Fe’s most notable artists, including Kevin Red Star and Geoffrey Gorman. The calendar is also full of lots of great music. Don’t let anyone tell you that Santa Fe isn’t a music town. Between the downtown clubs and venues, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and The Santa Fe Opera, we have much to choose from—so enjoy.

The Santa Fe Botanical Garden livens its stage with flamenco and an array of other monthly performances.
After Hours in the Garden From field trips and yoga sessions to painting parties and book clubs, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden offers a variety of activities. But tonight, the Garden will feel the trees shake with excitement as The Shiners Club jazz band takes center stage during August’s After Hours in the Garden, a monthly music series. The father-son, Santa Fe– based musicians blend Delta blues, swing, and jazz as they light the night with just a smidge of Northern New Mexican flair. Next month, the Garden will showcase the work of the Speakeasy Jazz Cats, followed by Thunder Bear and the Thunder Rebels in October. —Elizabeth Sanchez

Festival of Song Kindred Spirits Art Show Fundraiser Each year, Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary hosts a day of wagging tails, local art, and making a difference with its annual art show fundraiser. Kindred Spirits, which provides eldercare and hospice for dogs, horses, and poultry, welcomes all to its barns and eco-friendly grounds. This exhibition gathers captivating antique African artworks from Fiedler’s personal collection to create a dialogue between different tribal masks, headdresses, sculptures, figures, objects and forms, and miniature works, including maskettes, combs, and panels. Fiedler began researching, collecting, and selling African art in 1975 after touring the museums, galleries, and antique shops in Europe. He developed an eye for finding authentic, quality material through associations with tribal art dealers, private collectors, and museum groups. Crow artist by Amanda Jackson Above: Kevin Red Star, Returning to Camp, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 48" Anyone who appreciates contemporary Native art and artists has likely seen the work of Kevin Red Star (Crow). His paintings are hard to miss—canvases ranging in size from 10 x 10" to 48 x 60" painted in a variety of earth tones, often highlighted with primary red or yellow, depicting warriors, dancers, horses, tipis, and other imagery related to Crow life. When asked about his references, Red Star is quick to mention photographers Edward S. Curtis and Richard Throssel (Cree) and photographer-artist Fred E. Miller (Throssel and Miller were adopted by the Crow). Their photos provide a look into a history that Red Star appreciates. “A lot of people don’t dress like that or don’t live in longhouses or wickiups or tipis anymore…those are the sources I enjoy using…I’ve never experienced that and never ever will; that time has gone by on those settings.” Red Star is perhaps a photographer in his own right, taking pictures at the annual Crow Fair and Rodeo along the Little Bighorn River, not too far from his studio in Montana. The events, ranging from dancing and horse racing to a rodeo and daily parades, are held over three or four days. Participants hail from nations and tribes across the Western United States and Canada. He paints from these images as well as from photographs of the events provided by a friend. Describing his studio and his process, he shares, “Sometimes I sketch; sometimes I go directly with my pigment onto the canvas.” Working on up to six easels at any given time, he anticipates 12 to 15 new canvases will be completed for his one-man show at Sorrel Sky. Though Red Star’s work is known worldwide, few are aware that he spent a month in Russia as part of an exchange program in the late 1990s. He speaks fondly of the experience, working en plein air and visiting artists’ studios, and recalling a chance encounter he had in St. Petersburg at The Hermitage, running into an old friend from Red Lodge, Montana. China and the Netherlands are on his list of places to travel. “I’d like to go to China again, but I would like to go to the countryside and see the villages….go way out and interact with those artists; I want to see what they are doing.” Red Star will be in attendance for his reception at Sorrel Sky. The opportunity to meet him and experience his work in Santa Fe, just prior to Indian Market, should not be missed. 12
