It’s here. While our town has been decorated for the holidays for several weeks, the big event is this weekend, and the magic of the season takes full effect. Whether it be Christmas Eve on Canyon Road or New Year’s Eve on the Plaza, our city is lit up enough to bring out a sparkle in everyone’s eyes. In this environment, the holiday spirit just engulfs us. In these pages you will find many ways to enjoy our town during this wondrous time. Special concerts and art displays are happening all over town. There’s an energy this time of year, not only with the hustle bustle of holiday shopping, but also with that unique Santa Fe light that casts a certain feeling over our town. It’s as if it glows. Taking an early look at the forecast, it looks like we might even have a white Christmas. If true, it will make all those lights even more enchanting. The magic of the holidays comes from many sources, but mostly from inside each of us. Join me in finding that magic and making this holiday season one you’ll never forget.

Entreflamenco’s holiday season

Entreflamenco shows a stunning new production for the winter holiday season.

In Santa Fe, flamenco season runs all year, including the holidays. Through the end of the 2017, Entreflamenco presents a series of performances to chase away the winter’s chill. The all-new show is choreographed by Andalucian-turned-Santa Fean dancer, Antonio Granjero. It promises a combination of solo and duet performances by Granjero and co-director Estefania Ramirez, set to music from singer-percussionist Francisco Orozco, “Yiyi,” from Barcelona, Spain, and guitarist Angel Ruiz from Cordoba, Spain. Technical director Antonio Hidalgo Paz handles the dramatic lighting. El Flamenco, Entreflamenco’s downtown venue, opens an hour before the 7:30 pm performances, serving authentic Spanish tapas accompanied by choices from their wine and beer list. To give holiday company an experience they can’t duplicate at home, an evening of flamenco is just the ticket.—LVS Event

Entreflamenco, December 21–23 and December 28–31, 7:30 pm, $25–$40, El Flamenco de Santa Fe, 135 W Palace, entreflamenco.com

The Plaza is the heart of Santa Fe. What better spot to ring in the new year? Music, refreshments, and fireworks make for a festive evening.

New Year’s Eve around town E vent Looking for New Year’s Eve ideas? If you have little ones to consider, Santa Fe Botanical Garden ends their GLOW event with a kids’ New Year’s Eve party and a 7 pm countdown to “midnight.” Willing to stay up a little later? Plenty of venues offer adult beverages and a variety of music. Pianist/vocalists Doug Montgomery and Bill Forrest trade sets at Vanessie, and the trio American JeM plays at Rio Chama. JJ and the Hooligans rock the bar at El Farol, Sierra fills La Fonda’s La Fiesta Lounge with country and rock, and Fritz and the BlueJays play blues, R&B, and more at Cowgirl BBQ. A little further north, Chris Arellano and the Dwayne Ortega Band play country in the On the Rocks lounge at Camel Rock Casino. Meow Wolf takes over the Shellaberger Tennis Center at Santa Fe University of Art and Design for their Sublunar New Year’s Eve. Worthy is the headliner, and Spoolius, Paul Fleetwood, DJ Eldon, and Steven Dermody each man the turntables, too. Meow Wolf promises to wow with installation art, dazzling lights, and a monster sound system for the 21+ event.—LVS

event The City of Santa Fe invites one and all to their third annual New Year’s Eve celebration on the Plaza. Stationary heaters and bonfires for warmth, biscochitos and hot chocolate courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe, and music by Sol Fire, Alex Maryol, and Fun Addix promise to make it a lively night for all ages. At 11:45 pm, Mayor Javier Gonzales and other city officials will address the crowd and lead the countdown to midnight. Pride in our reputation as The City Different means that nothing will drop; instead, a handcrafted tin Zia symbol will be raised as the crowd sings “Auld Lang Syne” and “Las Mañanitas.” The evening ends with fireworks, along with wishes for a Prospero Año Nuevo for all. Make sure to check santafe.org for road closures and parking information.—Lisa Van Sickle

Bill Hester Fine Art is about color. Each of the artists represented by the gallery has their own unique take on color—its application, saturation, and depth working together to form vibrant masterpieces. The gallery’s emphasis on color is epitomized in the work of North Carolina–based artist Jane Filer. Filer’s work rises above in its ability to turn color into poetry—to ignite the imagination and draw you into the story playing out on the canvas. “Jane’s genius is color,” says gallery owner Bill Hester. Filer works on up to three paintings at any given time, each one constantly evolving as it is happening. The tonality of the work pulls viewers in, allowing for continued discovery of the nuances within the painting—truly a wow factor. Some of Filer’s more recent works have a hint of Santa Fe within them. “She’s fallen in love with the West,” notes Hester, “much like O’Keeffe did.” Filer’s work is a poetic vignette; don’t miss discovering it.—Amanda N. Łee’tso Tó’lín | Uranium Water PREVIEWS Foto Forum Santa Fe 1716 Paseo de Peralta fotoforumsantafe.com December 29–January 23 Reception December 29, 5–8 pm Foto Forum Santa Fe is one of the city’s newest galleries. Sage Paisner, founder and executive director, is incorporating workshops, visiting lecturers, and a darkroom into his plans for the space. Marina Eskeets (Diné) is a conceptual artist from the Navajo Nation town of Naná’áztiin, New Mexico. She was raised in a region deeply affected by the 1979 Church Rock disaster, when a dam broke and released 94 million gallons of radioactive waste into the Rio Puerco. Eskeets’s work looks at the ramifications of the spill, second largest in history, on the lands and people of Dinétah, the Navajo Nation.—Lisa Van Sickle Left: Marina Eskeets, Wind and Black Lungs, ink on paper, 9 x 6"

Untitled ViVO Contemporary 725 Canyon vivocontemporary.com Through January 16 Currently representing 11 artists, ViVO Contemporary is committed to including everyone in each show rather than featuring individuals or small groups. Each of ViVO’s exhibits centers around a thought-provoking concept, to which the gallery’s artists are asked to respond. The current exhibit, Untitled, is based on a quote from Marcel Duchamp: “The creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act.” Aware that the artist’s intent is not always visible in a finished piece, ViVO takes a unique, interactive way of looking at what viewers perceive in this show. Guests at the November opening were encouraged to come up with titles for each piece, after which the suggestions were placed on ViVO’s website. Subsequent visitors can now go online and vote for their choices.—LVS
