FEW CITIES OFFER THE ROMANCE that Santa Fe does; although the temperatures are still February-cool, our hearts remain warm. It’s no wonder that lovers have gravitated to our city—many choosing to marry here—with Santa Fe as a gorgeous backdrop for their relationship. While there certainly are some enchanting restaurants and clubs in town, I think the most romantic element is simply walking the streets and feeling the warmth of Santa Fe. The serenity here allows for quiet reflection and sweet moments, and our incredible views and sunsets add visual stimulation. Right after Valentine’s Day, on February 17, Skylab presents a wonderful evening of swing dancing. You can dress the role, take the lessons right there, and have a delightful evening that will actually have you in each other’s arms. What could be more romantic than that? Read more about it in the calendar. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place; one that exudes creativity, beauty, and romance at every bend in our twisty, turny city. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day. Bruce Adams

a little laugh at love For those who could stand to chuckle on Valentine’s Day, the traveling arm of Chicago’s comedy troupe The Second City will make light of romance during their revue Hooking up with the Second City at the Lensic. “There’s a million things that are funny about relationships,” says cast member Andrew Knox. The Second City is best known for launching the careers of comedians like Bill Murray, Tina Fey, and Stephen Colbert. They perform sketches and parodies, and are famed for their ability to do comedy on the fly. For their performance at the Lensic, the group will have “a mix of improv, in which we’re getting our cues from the audience and making it up, as well as sketches, which are written scenes, and some songs thrown in as well,” says Knox. About 70 percent of the material was written at Second City’s flagship stage in Chicago, while the touring company composed the rest.—Jason Strykowski Hooking up with the Second City, February 12, 7:30 pm, $32–$47, The Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, ticketssantafe.org

Dirty Dancing screens this Valentine’s Eve at the Lensic.
In celebration of its 15th anniversary (and Valentine’s Day), the Lensic Performing Arts Center is dispensing with its regular $5 Big Screen Classics ticket price for a free Saturday, February 13th, showing of the romantic dance film Dirty Dancing, a good-girl-meets-bad-boy tale set in 1963 at a Catskills resort. The 1987 film stars Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze in the lead roles, and features a period soundtrack along with music written especially for the movie. Tickets are limited to four per order, so you can still double-date, ’60s style.—Anne Maclachlan Dirty Dancing, February 13, 7 pm, free, The Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, ticketssantafe.org
The Lensic shows us some free Dirty Dancing In the 1987 classic, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey portray star-crossed lovers at an upstate New York resort.

Babysitters, champagne, and dinner may be traditional, but there are plenty of other ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day. There are two opportunities to stretch the legs on the morning of February 13th. The 5K Cupid’s Chase fundraiser for people with disabilities starts at 10 am at Villa Linda Park, and is open to runners, walkers, the physically challenged, and those with children in strollers. At the slightly racy “Animal Love Lives” hike at Cerrillos State at 11 am, learn about the mating rituals of local (nonhuman) animals. “For humans, Valentine’s Day means flowers, chocolates, and romantic candlelit dinners,” says Interim Park Manager Peter Lipscomb. “In the animal kingdom, most anything goes!” For lovers of nature, The Santa Fe Watershed Association is hosting the 10th annual “Love Your River Day” on February 13. Volunteers will gather in teams for two hours to remove trash from the banks of the Santa Fe River. Attendees will receive snacks donated by local businesses, and be entered in a drawing for prizes. The great indoors is also calling on Valentine’s Day. The New Mexico Museum of Art has a full slate of options on February 14 designed for families with young children. Guests can make collages, ornaments, and cards. Afterwards, they can drop in on a special performance of scenes from Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Winter’s Tale performed by Upstart Crow, a troupe that specializes in Shakespeare for young people.—JS

iTake quality iPhotos by Ja s on Str y kowski
AS IT TURNS OUT, the camera on your mobile phone can do a lot more than take pictures of your ice cream sundae. “The quality that you can get, especially from newer iPhones, is not that far off from professional DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras,” says photographer David Hoptman. “The limitations are mostly in people’s minds.” Proper applications and lenses can greatly improve iPhone pictures, but the other key is composition. He addresses artistic principles and reviews his favorite applications and lenses during regular workshops and classes on iPhone photography. A professional photographer since the 1980s, Hoptman caught the bug when he began working with Minox Cameras as a child, and developed an early interest in alternative methods of photography. So, progressing to modern digital equipment and cellular cameras seemed natural. “When I came across the iPhone, I was really impressed,” he says. “It’s just a matter of understanding how to use it.” Hoptman became so proficient with these compact cameras that he went on to teach for Apple. He currently teaches at the Santa Fe University of Art & Design. Also a mixed-media artist and printmaker, Hoptman stresses creativity in his lesson plans. To demonstrate the technical aspects, Hoptman projects his phone’s desktop onto a screen and walks his audience through his favorite applications. “I really teach photography using the iPhone. I teach people portraiture, landscape and composition, along with the apps,” he says.

The Emergence of a Legend (4/5), chromogenic print on metallic paper, 5 x 7"
ARTIST KENT MONKMAN, born in Winnipeg, Canada, of Cree and European heritage, has worked in a number of media; but prior to the advent of “Miss Chief Eagle Testickle,” never as a performer. Through this character, Monkman questions the European colonizers’ rejection of traditional indigenous American sexuality. Miss Chief Eagle Testickle—actually a play on words for “mischief egotistical”—is flamboyant, brightly colored, and not limited by binary gender definitions. “I created Miss Chief [as] that gender-bending alter ego who could live in my work as an artist, but also represent that two-spirited person—that person who could be both female and male,” says Monkman. “Over the evolution of her in my work she’s become a bit of a trickster. She’s a provocateur.” Miss Chief stars in each of four video paintings in Monkman’s exhibition at the Peters Projects gallery. The moving illustrations hang on walls like standard paintings. “We shot me in character against greenscreen and digitally inserted them on the painted image,” he says. Monkman has challenged the European and American traditions of indigenous representation for most of his career as an artist, noting “how Native American peoples, First Peoples, were kind of obliterated through a period of art history from the 18th, 19th centuries up until the present.” He takes particular shots at 19th-century painter George Catlin, who frequently depicted Native Americans in his works. Monkman gathers positive inspiration, however, from the Western landscapes of Albert Bierstadt. Through his own paintings, sculpture, films and performances, Monkman has attempted to reinsert Native peoples back into the North American arts narrative of history.
