OTHER THAN A FEW SMALL SNOW STORMS, this winter has been without the normal punch that Santa Fe is accustomed to. With a three-day weekend before us, the fine weather is going to serve as an incentive to get out of the house to enjoy so much of what is going on. My first choice is to enjoy this incredible winter outdoors, up in the mountains. The skiing is limited, but the quality of the snow is excellent, and there aren’t any rocks on these groomed runs. With just a few runs open, a half day is perfect. You’ll enjoy wonderful views and have the joy of being outdoors in the winter. Few feelings match that. The museums around town will be open if you’re wanting something a bit less outdoorsy and more climate-controlled. And finally, consider this an excellent opportunity to enjoy your own city. Check out the many activities going on at the restaurants and clubs this weekend on our website and in these pages. We get these three-day weekends rarely, so soak it all up and enjoy every second of these precious days to enjoy life in your favorite town, Santa Fe.

3D Proven Systems, digital renderings for Armond Lara’s Flying Blue Buffalo Project.
Flying Blue Buffalo Project Open house and panel discussion form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center Panel discussion February 17, 2–5 pm
Through the end of February, form & concept is running a Kickstarter campaign to support artist Armond Lara’s Flying Blue Buffalo Project. Of Diné and Mexican heritage, Lara, born in 1939, showed at Indian Market in the 1970s. In the early 1980s, he walked away from a career in aerospace engineering and city planning in Seattle and moved to Santa Fe to pursue art full-time. His work, ranging from collage to printmaking to sculpture, has been shown widely in the United States and Europe. Buffalo often appeared, animals Lara describes as “masters of survival.” Over the years, his buffalo took on a blue hue and sprouted wings, a testament to Lara’s Diné grandmother’s survival skills. His grandmother was what Native people refer to as a “lost bluebird”—abducted as a child and enslaved as a domestic servant. Lara had always known this story, but has only recently learned how common it actually was: from the 1600s to the late 1800s a shocking number of children were taken. The Flying Blue Buffalo Project will be an installation of over 70 blue buffalo, 3-D printed from Lara’s woodcarvings. Each one will be accompanied by accounts of an individual child’s experience and fight for survival, taken from written and oral accounts by descendants of these lost bluebirds. The installation is planned for August. On February 17, form & concept will host a panel discussion with Lara, Joseph Riggs, an attorney and artist who is a frequent collaborator with Lara, and local historians, talking about the project and the stories behind it.—Lisa J. PREVIEWS Mirror Box form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center February 23–April 14 Reception February 23, 5–8 pm Strangers Collective, formed in 2014 to exhibit the work of emerging artists, originally held secret shows in private homes. Pop-ups came next, followed by their own downtown space No Land in 2017. No Land is small, and Strangers Collective’s current show, which includes the work of 22 artists and 18 writers, is huge. form & concept rode to the rescue, offering codirectors Kyle Farrell, Alex Gill, and Jordan Eddy (who works at form & concept) space. Named for a medical device used in neurology, Mirror Box is a fitting title for the exhibit of artwork and ’zines created by young artists reflecting on their surroundings and places in the world. Although all the men and women represented in the show have Santa Fe ties, they currently live in several states and overseas.—LVS Right: Derek Chan, Mercury in Retrograde, acrylic, silver leaf, and collage on panel, 72 x 48"
Annual Guadalupe Group Art Show Eye on the Mountain 614 Agua Fria eyeonthemountaingallery.com Closing reception February 23, 6–9 pm Through February 23 The Annual Guadalupe Group Art Show at Eye on the Mountain Gallery places the larger-thanlife wood-carved sculpture Corn Mother, by Rob Yancey and Bob Zettler, front and center at this exhibition. Now in its fourth year, the show endeavors to address the parallels between Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Aztec mother goddess Coatlaxopeuh.—Amanda N. Pitman

Heartful Expressions Alexandra Stevens Gallery of Fine Art 820 Canyon alexandrastevens.com February 17–28 Reception February 17, 5:30–7 pm February is the month of love, and Alexandra Stevens Fine Art once again hosts their annual celebration of both February and love. The gallery’s established artists will show their work, all “heartfelt expressions” of affection for the people and places they paint. Expect Western-themed pieces from Phil Epp, angular bronze figures by Jeannine Young, Ruth Valerio’s loose, impressionist landscapes, and Peggy McGivern’s evocative portraits and landscapes. The show runs through the end of February.—LVS
