IT IS WINTER, and finally the weather is cooling to more seasonal temperatures. It’s the perfect time for all those indoor activities. Santa Fe is blessed with a wealth of museums, and the state-owned ones offer free admission on the first Sunday of each month to New Mexico residents. Have you ever been to the New Mexico History Museum, behind the Palace of the Governors? The exhibits there are informative and entertaining. The Governor’s Gallery at the capitol is one of my favorites. It’s the one museum the captures both our historical great artists and also our living artists. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum has done an amazing job showing not only showing O’Keeffe’s work, but also the influence O’Keeffe had in the art world both near and far. On Museum Hill, four major museums, each showcasing a different genre of art, all have wonderful, visually interesting displays. When it snows, or when the weather warms up, we can return to some of our favorite outdoor activities. In the meantime, this is a great time to take advantage of yet another Santa Fe attraction, our incredible museums. Stay warm and enjoy.
Big hair, fancy suits, and boots? Must be Marty Stuart! He worked with Johnny Cash, Doc Watson, and Vassar Clements before starting his solo career.

Souper Bowl XXIV Help raise money for The Food Depot to alleviate hunger in Northern New Mexico by sampling some of the best soups created by our local chefs. Ticketholders taste soups contributed by about 30 of the city’s restaurants and vote for their favorites in four categories: savory, seafood, vegetarian, and cream. The competition is hot, and the entrants hail from fine dining establishments, retirement residences, casual restaurants, and the Santa Fe Community College culinary department. The Food Depot offers several programs to make sure no New Mexican goes to bed hungry. Their Mobile Food Pantry delivers to rural communities that don’t have the resources to set up their own pantries. Other programs target schoolchildren and their families, and the Food Depot can even help make sure the family pet gets fed.—Lisa J. Van Sickle EV ENT

organ recital Every single Friday, holidays included, First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe presents a concert in their TGIF series. Usually lasting only 30 to 45 minutes, music director Linda Raney schedules a wide array of performers, usually, but not always, local. Friday, January 19th, one of the nation’s finest organists, James David Christie, swings by to give a recital on the church’s C. B. Fisk organ, installed in 2008. Christie is organist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and he has performed with other orchestras worldwide. He has also held university and conservatory positions. Christie plans to perform Bach, Buxtehude, and other composers of the German Baroque era.—LVS P E RFO RM A N CE

DAVID MCCLISTER
P E RFORMA N CE For his annual trip to Santa Fe, Marty Stuart brings his Fabulous Superlatives as well as special guest Wayne “The Train” Hancock to rock The Lensic on Friday night, the 20th. This five time Grammy–winning Grand Ole Opry star is worth the money to grab a seat and immerse yourself some extraordinary American roots music. His new album Way Out West, due out March 10, is produced by Mike Campbell and features his longtime band which NPR Music said could, “melt your heart with four-part harmonies, rock your bones with honky-tonk, and dazzle you with picking worthy of their name.” Take in some new music from this effort, including originals, some instrumentals, and a few covers. In addition to being an award-winning musician, Stuart is also a country music archivist, photographer, and songwriter.—Amanda N. Pitman

old music, old church P E RFORMA N CE San Miguel Chapel is known as the oldest church in the continental United States. Only fitting that it is the venue for an evening of early music played on period instruments by the group Severall Friends. Mary Springfels, viola da gamba, and Elizabeth Blumenstock, Baroque violin, are co-directors. In this concert, Trios for Four, they are joined by violinist Stephen Redfield and harpsichordist Kathleen McIntosh. All four musicians have deep New Mexico ties and performance dates around the globe. They will perform trio sonatas—works with two melodic lines played by the violins, and basso continuo parts for the keyboard and viola da gamba—by Jean-Marie LeClair and Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. Works by Henry Purcell and Marin Marais will give Springfels and McIntosh a chance to shine as soloists, and pieces by Bach and Handel are also on the program.—LVS

She has edited more than 100 anthologies, and presents her newest at the Jean Cocteau. Mad Hatters and March Hares contains 18 short stories and poems inspired by the characters in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Datlow will appear with authors Stephen Graham Jones and Matthew Kressel for a discussion, signing, and a Mad Hatter Hat Contest. Attendees are invited to create and wear the craziest headgear they can dream up, and Datlow will present awards for the maddest hats.—LVS

PREVIEWS
Unidentified Women form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center January 26–March 27 Reception January 26, 5–7 pm While looking through the archives of the Historic Northampton Museum in Massachusetts, which holds a collection of manuscripts, crafts, and textiles dating back to 1700s, Jodi Colella came across a collection of daguerreotype portraits. It struck her that, while there was a wealth of information about the men in the photos, 80 percent of the women were simply labeled “unidentified.” Colella assembled a collection of thrift-store daguerreotypes and went to work, further obscuring the women’s identities and images with elaborate embroidery. She says of the project, “I think of it as lost lives and labor. By using labor that’s often culturally identified as feminine, I wanted to bring out their identities.” Colella speaks Thursday afternoon at 2 PM about the show, which opens Friday.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

The group at ViVO Contemporary is no different. Offering a new perspective for the new year, this January show includes Warren Keating’s pixelated paintings as seen from overhead, Barrie Brown’s representative artwork made of kiln glass, Ilse Bolle’s assemblages of paper and twigs, and more from the gallery’s other artists.—LVS Right: Ilse Bolle, Through Thick and Thin, encaustic over handmade paper and linen, 36 x 18 x 3"

R. Luke DuBois: A More Perfect Union SITE Santa Fe 1606 Paseo de Peralta sitesantafe.org January 19–April 4 Reception January 19, 6–7 pm New York-based artist R. Luke DuBois presents a show exploring democracy, elections, and politics. A 2008 piece, Hindsight is Always 20/20, is the main part of the exhibit. DuBois determined the most frequently used words in each president’s State of the Union speeches, then arranged the words of each into the instantly recognizable form of an eye chart. Three of these images—the words of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and George W. Bush— will be displayed on billboards outside SITE’s building. For Learning Machines, DuBois started with voting machines from the 1940s and 1950s. He has rigged the machines to ask visitors to vote on a series of choices from the thoughtprovoking to the absurd. Voting results from the machines, continually updated, will be displayed in the gallery. DuBois earned a doctorate in music composition. On January 20 at 6:30 PM, he and fellow musician Bora Yoon will present ( ((PHONATION)) ), performance art combining sound and video, in SITE’s new auditorium.—LVS
