EVEN IN THE WINTER MONTHS, there’s music all over town with some especially great musicians, such as the Cuban sounds of Savor at La Fonda, Ryan Finn Quartet at El Mesón, and Yacht Rock Hustle at the Palace. Be sure to check out the music and nightlife calendar, as the list of acts performing this weekend is impressive. I’d like to draw your attention to some of the more unusual offerings happening in Santa Fe. For example, the IAIA Winter Readers Gathering takes place January 6–13 with readings by the faculty from the creative writing program. Meow Wolf brings Ariana Throne to teach a beginning body painting class. Zen meditation instruction takes place on Sunday. My final “out of the box” suggestion is the Monday night swing dance (with a preceding class) at the Odd Fellows Hall. Often we think of activities here as passive. It doesn’t have to be that way. All of these suggestions get you off the couch and moving, creating your own art, if you will. Surrounded by the amazing creativity of Santa Fe, some of it oozes into us and needs to come out. Throughout our calendar pages, you will note several activities that will bring out another side of you. Just do it.

open house You’re probably familiar with the city’s various art walks, first Fridays, last Fridays, and other gallery and art events, but it’s necessary to mention yet another venue—the Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but absolutely worth the short drive from the hub of downtown. The recently renamed Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts hosts their monthly first Friday open house, providing an opportunity to visit with the curators about current exhibitions, tour the 2,000–piece collection of global indigenous art, meet the staff, and learn more about the organization’s mission.—Amanda N. Pitman
EV EN T Friday, January 12th, Performance Santa Fe (PSF) and Santa Fe Pro Musica (SFPM) each present visiting artists teaching master classes. The public is invited to watch these established artists work with area students. PSF presents soprano Angela Meade in a Sunday Above: Angela Meade will coach voice afternoon recital, and is preceding it with a Friday majors from UNM in a Friday afternoon afternoon master class. Meade, who is in the master class. midst of a stellar career in opera, will work with voice students from the University of New Mexico at 3–5 PM in St. Francis Auditorium. At 7 PM, the Escher String Quartet takes over St. Francis to hold a master class with local string students under the auspices of SFPM. The quartet will play in concert Saturday. Both master classes are open to the public. Watching these acclaimed musicians coach students is a rare chance for the audience to learn about vocal or string technique, the art of ensemble playing, and to see what elevates a performance from “good” to “great.” —Lisa Van Sickle

art workshop E VE NT What better way to start the New Year than with an art class? Sorrel Sky Gallery is holding a one-day workshop titled Horsehair Basketry on January 13 with Jane Chavez. No experience is necessary, and all materials are included in the course fee. While in the middle of a 30-year career as a science teacher, Chavez developed an interest in basketry. She started by weaving pine needles, but switched to the far longer horsehair as she went deeper into the medium. Her creations are intricate, and the small forms are accented with silver and sometimes small beads. Students in Chavez’s class walk away with a new understanding and appreciation of the intricacies of basket weaving. Watch Sorrel Sky’s website for information about other workshops throughout the spring.—LVS

William Georgenes 5. Gallery PREVIEWS 2351 Fox Rd #700 5pointgallery.com January 12–February 14 Reception January 12, 5 pm 5. Gallery celebrates the life and career of William Georgenes, who passed away in December. Born in Boston in the 1920s, Georgenes was orphaned at a young age. He was an artist from the beginning, and worked his way through the Massachusetts School of Art, earning a BFA, continuing on to a MFA at the Yale School of Art, where he studied with Josef Albers. He taught art at universities throughout New England, and worked as an art restorer at Harvard’s Fogg Museum. Georgenes moved to Santa Fe in 1988. He is best known for his large abstract paintings, filled with patterns formed from multicolored dots, and for his assemblages. The assemblages are carefully arranged conglomerations of toys, arranged to form pattern and texture, finished with metallic paint. His prodigious work ethic kept Georgenes working long hours in the studio until the end of his life.—Lisa Van Sickle
Garlic NO LAND 54 1/2 E San Francisco #7 strangerscollective.com January 13–March 10 Reception January 13, 6–9 pm Liz Brindley defines herself as a farmer, artist, writer, art educator, printmaker, and community organizer. Her two-month residency at NO LAND will tie together the threads of these interests. After graduating from Minnesota’s St. Olaf College with an art degree, Brindley moved to Santa Fe and found work at various farms and at the Santa Fe Farmers Market, developing an appreciation for garlic, among other crops. Over the weeks of her residency, Brindley will show drawings, prints, and a mural. She will lead a printmaking workshop using vegetables, and hold a workshop on making paper from garlic skins. Other events will center on both art and food, with the goal of opening an “honest dialogue about local agriculture, food justice, and creativity.”—LVS

Voices OTA Contemporary 203 Canyon otacontemporary.com Through January 25 OTA Contemporary presents a group show including the work of Kiyomi Baird, Jacob Burmood, David Clark, Carlos Frias, Hernan Gomez Chavez, Mario Martinez, August Muth, Somers Randolph, and Nola Zirin. The work is varied. Randolph sculpts sinuous shapes from stone; Muth creates holographs; Frias, Martinez (Pasqua Yaqui Tribe), and Zirin are all abstract painters—although the work of each is distinct—and Baird’s oil paintings reflect metaphysical concerns and her Japanese heritage. One of Canyon Road’s newest galleries, OTA Contemporary opened earlier in 2017 with a view to “inspire curiosity and human passions.” The work they exhibit is decidedly contemporary. Voices will be the first time Jacob Burmood, sculptor, and David Clark, who works in encaustic monotypes, have shown in Santa Fe.—LVS Left: Kiyomi Baird, Warrior, oil on board, 48 x 36 x 1 1/2" January 4, 2018 NOW 11
