THESE WARM SUMMER NIGHTS are perfect for getting out and enjoying the amazing array of music and art here. SITE Santa Fe is exhibiting much wider than a line—an extraordinary show that goes beyond the expected, with some mindbending artwork. We are lucky to have this fine institution with its professionalism and vision. As I perused this week’s Santa Fean NOW calendar, I was blown away by all the great music offered. The Santa Fe Opera and Santa Fe Chamber Music festival continue to present some of the finest musicians and singers working today. These are international stars who come to our city and present work one would normally see only in a bigger city. The clubs and the Plaza are full of great music. My personal recommendation is the Subdudes, whom I’ve seen several times in New Orleans. They’re playing at the Bridge, at Santa Fe Brewery. Jay Boy Adams & Zenobia on the Plaza Saturday night will be a raucous party. It’s a busy weekend; don’t miss it.

Sephardic Legacy Romances. Lullabies. Love songs. In collaboration with the New Mexico History Museum exhibit, Fractured Faiths: Spanish Judaism, The Inquisition, and New World Identities, Desert Chorale presents Sephardic Legacy. The production portrays the diaspora of the Sephardic Jewish people, whose music crossed the oceans after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Featured are Casablanca-based Sephardic women’s music expert and guest soloist Vanessa Paloma, along with skilled musicians Fattah Abbou and Polly Tapia Ferber. Paloma says the evening’s music will range from traditional to classic choral. “Santa Fe and New Mexico have such rich Sephardic history. Here, audiences will be able to see the sound and textual legacy [that connects] Mediterranean Sephardim to New Mexico Sephardic traces,” taking them on a journey of history and sound.—Elizabeth Sanchez

As part of the sixth Summer Shakespeare season, the Santa Fe Shakespeare Society presents Romeo and Juliet, now through August. This performance consists of a volunteer cast of both new and experienced actors. It features the Above: Romeo (Liam O’Brien), Juliet (Joey Beth new Traveling Globe Project, a Gilbert), and Friar Lawrence (Ken Bordner). portable, recycled-material-crafted reproduction of the original Globe stage, which will be the centerpiece of this production. The Society’s coordinator, Jerry Ferraccio, says the project was created to help viewers visualize Shakespeare’s world. “You don’t do the arts in Santa Fe to be rich; you do it to enrich others,” Ferraccio says. He feels that 400 years of theatrical text adaptation might have ruined aspects of the “impetuousness, passion, family feuds, love at first sight,” and the overall understanding of Romeo and Juliet for the modern audience. People often mention they did not enjoy the play when they initially studied it, but after watching this performance, they understood and held on to every word.—ES
From purchasing lumber for props to using a rental car or hotel, the film business stimulates the local economy. This weekend, The New Mexico Film Foundation (NMFF) presents the annual Summer Soiree fundraiser, which assists the independent film industry with these endeavors. The event, held at the historic Scottish Rite Center, features a film noir theme, inviting guests to dress in 1940s attire. Along with the auction and raffle, refreshments will be available, live-broadcast World Indie Radio will play 1940s classics, and awards will be presented. NMFF president Tracy Jordan says the foundation provides grants, networking events, workshops, and other services to seasoned and amateur filmmakers. “New Mexican independent filmmaking is always going to exist,” says Jordan, “but [it is important] for those filmmakers to reach a new level, to perhaps turn from a student or someone who does this as a hobby into someone that can actually do this for a living.”—ES
Baca Street Bash This weekend, the classic summer block party lives on, as Baca Street merchants invite the community to join them in their second annual Baca Street Bash. A quarter mile from the intersection of Cerrillos Road and Baca Street, the get-together will include a raffle, food trucks, a bonfire, art demonstrations and exhibits, games, and live entertainment. Featuring 16 local establishments, Baca Street’s longstanding businesses join newcomers for the family-friendly event.—ES Baca Street Bash, July 23, 5–9 pm, free, Baca St, facebook.com/BacaStArtsDistrict July 21, 2016 NOW 1

Robert Reynolds, Two Cottonwoods, oil on canvas, 11 x 14"
Three landscape painters show their new work at Acosta-Strong Fine Art: Robert Reynolds, Jim Jennings, and Jack Dunn. Reynolds uses a palette knife to portray the energy of New Mexico landscapes. “He truly captures the vibrancy and colors of the landscapes he paints,” says gallery co-owner Carlos Acosta. Clouds are the focus of Jennings’s work. “I try to paint directly and simply, because I just like the look of a simple brush stroke of color,” says the Santa Fe artist. Dunn is drawn to bold colors. “I have always been inspired by the geometric landscape formations and the vibrant colors of the American Southwest,” he says.—Emily Van Cleve

A Family Legacy c elebrating t hr e e a r ti s ts by Stepha nie Love CREATIVITY RUNS IN THE FAMILY of painter Charles Pabst. His two children, Michael Pabst and Cara Pabst Moran, started painting as young children, learning by watching their father use the technique of painting with a palette knife. For a few weeks, the trio will show their newest works together in a dynamic exhibit, A Family Legacy, at The Signature Gallery. The show’s reception, which includes refreshments and live music, is on Friday from 4–7 pm. All three painters will be present for this special opportunity to explore the similarities and contrasts in style and subject matter. The Pabst family members will also be at the gallery Saturday and Sunday, July 23 and 24. PREVIEWS Angel Wynn, Self Portrait, encaustic mixed media, 16 x 20"
Adelita: Women Soldiers of the Mexican Revolution Gallery 901, 708 Canyon gallery901.org July 1–27 Encaustic artist and photographer Angel Wynn honors the legacy of the Adelita warrior through her mixed media images that combine photography with encaustic wax. “Adelita” was the name given to the women who followed men to war during the Mexican Revolution. Not only did they cook and nurse wounds, they also picked up guns and fought. “I had come across some painted murals that introduced me to these women, and for days all I could think about was the difficult lifestyle they endured,” says Wynn. “A passion to tell their story set in and would not leave me alone.”—Emily Van Cleve Treasures and Junk Giacobbe-Fritz Fine Art, 702 Canyon giacobbefritz.com July 22–August 5 Reception July 22, 5–7 pm More than 20 oil on canvas paintings of both valuable and mundane objects are featured in Bradford Salamon’s show Treasures and Junk. The idea, Salamon says, is to exhibit paintings not only of valuable objects, like trains or cars, but also of everyday objects that don’t have much monetary value. “I have a particular interest in wanting to paint different kinds of old medicine bottles,” he explains. “The junk part of the show relates not only to objects with no real inherent value but also to junkies (drug addicts) and objects, like an In-N-Out Burger cup, related to junk food.”—EVC Michael Pabst, Forest Light, oil on canvas, 30 x 15"

Beyond the Boundary Waxlander Gallery, 622 Canyon waxlander.com July 19–August 1 Reception July 22, 5–8 pm Initially a ceramicist, Matthew Higginbotham discovered the immediacy of portraying his vision through painting (as opposed to glazing) in 1995, and he hasn’t looked back since. With a move to Chimayó from Washington State, Matthew Higginbotham, Brush of Winter, oil on canvas, 40 x 50" Higginbotham began to focus on the splendor of the landscapes surrounding him. “In the early years of painting, I experimented with many subjects, and eventually landscapes became my primary focus,” he notes. “It just seemed natural for me to want to study the nuances of what I was seeing in the fields and skies, and the more I painted them, the more I began to understand how they made me feel.” Now based in Santa Fe, Higginbotham creates luminous oil paintings that reflect his deep appreciation of the Southwest’s natural wonders. “Painting is a healing practice for me because I feel a connection to something greater than myself,” he says. “Though there is a profound silence in the scenes I’m drawn to, there is also an incredible vibration of life.”—SL July 21, 2016 NOW 13
