CELEBRATING THE FIRST FULL WEEKEND of summer, 2016, will be easy here in Santa Fe—especially if you look at this week’s calendar for inspiration. In music and art alone, this is going to be one great weekend. Saturday starts off with the Gay Pride celebration. While the parade is pure fun, the sense of community that this event brings is what makes it stand out for me. In our town, this is what we do—celebrate each other. The Santa Fe music community is coming together to present a salute to Prince at the Railyard on Saturday night. If you’ve ever wondered about the quality of our local music pool, be prepared to be impressed. I can tell you there’s an excellent line up of exceptional talent. We are blessed to be in a community where it’s not just about the extraordinary, but that we’re all getting to do this together with love and caring. Have a blast!

Detroit Lightning (popular local Grateful Dead cover band) played at Meow Wolf’s new Fancy Town music venue on June 10—reportedly for an epic four hours.

Santa Fe Pride Since 1993, the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance (Santa Fe HRA) has supported inclusion and acceptance for the LGBT community. This weekend, it will continue to do so through the 2016 Santa Fe Pride celebration. The annual event, which expects 3,000–5,000 attendees, kicks off with the Santa Fe Pride Parade at 1 pm, on a route through the Santa Fe Plaza. Santa Fe Pride on the Plaza will follow at roughly 1:30 pm with headliner musicians Fantine and Scarlett Santana. The day will conclude with more excitement at an after party hosted by Skylight Santa Fe. Santa Fe HRA President James Brethour says that SFHRA (which held a vigil for the Orlando victims last week) will probably hold a remembrance/reflection on behalf of those victims sometime during the event. Despite the attainment of marriage equality and larger Pride celebrations in other cities, Brethour feels celebrating locally is still important. “Even in a little community like Santa Fe, we need to show the community and the rest of the world that we stand against hate, and we are proud of who we are.”—Elizabeth Sanchez

Ben Steele, Giddy-up, oil on canvas with plexiglas Etch A Sketch frame, 24 x 30" The paintings of Ben Steele act as commentary on the history of the art world, and he thoroughly loves using technical processes and skills from his classical artistic training. “My serious side enjoys careful observation, allowing the viewer to see the beauty of simple things,” he says. “The power of light and shade and the appeal of subtle and strong color relationships spark my enthusiasm for realism.” His eye for detail captures the reality of each juxtaposed object in his compositions, while his playful pairings reveal his paradoxical admiration for art. Steele says his 2016 show will include the most popular themes and styles from his career. “[I]t’s like a retrospective on art in general, not just mine.”—Stephanie Love

STUDIO

Barbara Meikle artful animal portraits Acclaimed for her talent at depicting animals in joyfully exuberant colors, artist Barbara Meikle hosts events at her gallery with visiting donkeys, eagles, owls, or horses; at each event, she creates paintings of these special guests. On June 25 this year, the beloved Bindy—a burro from Equine Spirit Sanctuary—will return to model for portraits at the gallery. Unendingly in love with New Mexico, its art, and its animals, Meikle celebrates her 10th year at 236 Delgado this summer. The native New Mexican painter aims to paint and sculpt the spiritual beauty of the Southwestern landscape and creatures that inspire her. She continues to honor these animals outside the studio, as well. Meikle donates some proceeds from sold works to horse, donkey, and wildlife rescue organizations both local and regional.—Stephanie Love Barbara Meikle, Bindy in June, oil on canvas, 36 x 36"

Ellen Koment, Blue Meets Gold, encaustic on paper, 51 x 40"

Encaustics by Ellen Koment David Rothermel Contemporary 142 Lincoln drcontemporary.com June 24–July 7 Reception June 24, 5–7 pm Ellen Koment’s first show at David Rothermel Contemporary features the Santa Fe artist’s latest vivid encaustic paintings. “I am very impressed with Ellen’s recent work,” says Rothermel. “As an artist myself, I have an appreciation for her fortitude in addressing the medium.” About her encaustic work on paper Koment says, “Pouring on paper as a technique, for me, requires me to be present to the process and aware of all that is happening on the page.” She adds, “One must act in reaction to the way that the first color has fallen. It exists in the area between control and chaos.”—Emily Van Cleve

Rick Stevens, Open Circuitry, oil on canvas, 28 x 28"

Rick Stevens: New Paintings Hunter Kirkland Contemporary 200-B Canyon June 24–July 10 Reception June 24, 5–7 pm Lately, Santa Fe painter Rick Stevens has been thinking about the differences between work and play as well as control and improvisation. These thoughts and others manifest in the colorful canvases featured in his upcoming solo show at Hunter Kirkland Contemporary. “A lot of my work right now relates to tree forms, but I sometimes flip them or turn the shapes on edge to become a horizontal line, changing the orientation of the painting,” he says. “I like to jump from the known to the unknown, not just stay safe.” Stevens blends impressions of the natural world with abstracted lines and shapes.—EVC

PREVIEWS

ROY G BIV Turner Carroll Gallery 725 Canyon turnercarrollgallery.com June 21–July 10 Reception June 24 5–7 pm Fausto Fernandez, Jamie Brunson, Kate Petley, and Robert Townsend celebrate the world’s earliest language—color—with their newest works. ROY G BIV, the show’s title, is a common acronym for the colors of the prism: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Recognizing that each of these colors invokes different responses in viewers, these four talented artists master their vibrant palettes with varying techniques. Fernandez layers his colors over and over, embellishing them with diamond dust glitter, to create lively interactions between contrasting colors. Townsend also paints contrasting, saturated colors, but he uses representational subjects with fun themes, like candy, to express his energy. Artists Brunson and Petley employ saturated hues and strong shapes to create simply refined compositions that explore color’s effects on mood and emotion. These artists, although dissimilar in style, pay homage to their inspiration—the universal language of color. —Stephanie Love

Chris Maynard, Bird Berry, feathers, 17 x 15”

The Art of Chris Maynard Gerald Peters Gallery, 1005 Paseo de Peralta gpgallery.com June 24–July 23 Reception June 24, 5–7 pm With the precision of ophthalmology tools, Chris Maynard creates detailed three-dimensional works of art, encompassing a unique and exclusive theme: feathers. He says his inspiration fluctuates between bird poses and flight sequences, to color and shape, escape, transcendence, and more. Maynard’s tools allow him to utilize both light and shadows, creating intricate creations, such as shadowboxes that tell the story behind the birds and the people who were once connected with the feathers. He receives the majority of the feathers from private aviaries and zoos after the birds naturally molt; thus, he feels shed feathers symbolize a sort of gentleness, believing they hold the life and beauty he would like to illustrate as an artist. —Elizabeth Sanchez
