PUBLISHER’S NOTE

IT’S ALREADY JULY 4TH WEEKEND! On Monday, the pancakes will be sizzling all morning as our community comes together on this most American of all holidays, to spend the day with friends and neighbors in celebration of our country. And what better place to feel that spirit than on Santa Fe’s Plaza, which is so ripe with history. On Friday, another celebration happens in our town with the beginning of the Santa Fe Opera season, which opens with La Fanciulla del West and continues Saturday night with Don Giovanni. The Opera grounds are famous for their tailgate parties; they are also a good place to spot wellknown visitors who are here to enjoy one of the country’s most highly regarded opera companies. I’ve personally seen two Supreme Court Justices over the course of an opening weekend. There are several gallery openings this weekend, and our music scene, beyond the Opera, is in full force. The following pages are stuffed with great things to do this weekend. Enjoy every moment of it!

Surrounded by students from the 22 tribal nations of New Mexico, 95 percent of whom plan on attending college, First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the Santa Fe Indian School graduating class of 2016 on Thursday, May 26. Presented with a Pendleton blanket, Mrs. Obama said, “The traditions that this school was designed to destroy are now expressed in every square foot of this place. Look at you now.”

BUST!

GABRIELLA MARKS

This weekend, local circus-based theater group Wise Fool sets its stage ablaze with the fire of imagination. Fueled by 19 dedicated performers, the show treats audience members to a spectacular and powerful dynamic of acrobatics, trapeze, aerial fabric, stiltwalking, clowning, physical theater, and more. Every year, Wise Fool hosts a six-week intensive circus workshop for women and those who are gender nonconforming, ages 15 and up. All shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and abilities are welcome to take on the courses, as a form of physical and emotional expression. Fourteen years ago, BUST! was designed “to create a space where the original founders of Wise Fool could experience circus in their own way, [while] community members could experience circus in a unique, artistic way, different from the historical context [of male dominance and the gender binary],” explains experience codirector Freyr A. Marie. The 2016 program of study emphasized community, studied strength and femininity, deconstructed gender dichotomization, and explored artistic creativity. Codirector Karen Rencountre says, “The things they’ve learned [such as self-reflection and courage] will be onstage.”—Elizabeth Sanchez BUST!, July 1, 7:30 pm, July 2, 2 pm & 7:30 pm, adults $10–$15, 12 and under $5 at the door or online, Wise Fool Studio, 1131 Siler, BUST2016.brownpapertickets.com

Humming House, a lively indie-folk quintet, performs at the Santa Fe Bandstand. This year’s lineup will include 75 performances.

Bandstand One of Santa Fe’s liveliest summer charms is the free Tuesday-through-Saturday Bandstand concert series on the Plaza, which runs from July 5 through the month of August. With a roster of local and big-name musicians covering jazz, folk, salsa, bluegrass, rock, and even opera, the early evening programs encourage dancing and mingling among tourists and locals alike. It’s an all-ages venue, where tiny feet stomp happily beside those of their parents and grandparents, and where friendly teens swing willing elders into the dance area. —Anne Maclachlan Santa Fe Bandstand concert series, July 5–August 26, free, check lineup and times at santafebandstand.org June 30, 2016 NOW 1

Left: Entreflamenco performers bring the Spanish tradition of flamenco dancing to the Lodge at Santa Fe.

Entreflamenco A rich variety of flamenco song and dance is part of Entreflamenco’s new full-length summer production in the intimate Maria Benitez Cabaret at the Lodge at Santa Fe. For the company’s third summer season, codirectors and lead dancers Antonio Granjero and Estefania Ramirez are bringing three musicians and three additional dancers from Spain. Entreflamenco was founded in 1998 in Spain by Granjero, who at a young age performed for the royal family of Spain, Queen Elizabeth II, the King of Morocco, and in theaters throughout Europe and Asia. For close to two decades, he was a soloist and choreographer for Benitez’s company Teatro Flamenco. Ramirez, Granjero’s wife and dance partner, has also been a professional dancer since childhood. At the age of 17, she made her debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The company, which is now based in Santa Fe, has performed throughout the Iberian Peninsula and North and Central America for the past 18 years.—Emily Van Cleve

Stop by the Santa Fe Plaza for a family-friendly Independence Day celebration.

Santa Fe’s 41st annual celebration of the Fourth of July is presented by the Rotary Club of Santa Fe, who invites the community to enjoy an old-fashioned pancake breakfast, a vintage car show, and a silent auction in the morning, and an arts and crafts show throughout the day. There will be entertainment from 8 am to 3 pm. Last year’s proceeds of more than $90,000 went to nonprofit organizations around Santa Fe.—AM

Melinda K. Hall, Constant Companion, oil on canvas, 20 x 16”

On the Loose marks Melinda K. Hall’s first solo show at GiacobbeFritz, as well as the 25th anniversary of her first exhibition in Santa Fe. With 20 new paintings to view, visitors will delight in the narrative nature of Hall’s work, with its emphasis on the freedom of painterly brushwork and simplified compositions. Hall states, “As paint and brushes are my tools, so are my humor, metaphor, playfulness, color, and text. I want to the work to be initially accessible. I like to draw the viewer into the environment of the painting, invite them to stay a while and there discover more subtle aspects of the work.” Hall will be present for the reception of her show on Friday, July 1.—Amanda Jackson Melinda K. PREVIEWS

Peter Wright, Pitcher Group, blown glass, varying heights of 19–28"

Reflecting Nature Winterowd Fine Art 701 Canyon fineartsantafe.com July 1–14 Reception July 1, 5–7 pm In a two-person show entitled Reflecting Nature, the gentle mixed media abstracts of Don Quade complement the softly curving glasswork created by Peter Wright. Quade, whose warm, earth-toned work reflects the subtleties of nature, observed in a recent statement, “Exploring the idea of garden as metaphor, my most recent paintings focus on the transitional and transformative phases of nature’s life cycles. I specifically look to examine and capture these juxtapositions found during the ‘in-between seasons’ to find moments in time that mark subtle shifts in cycles from chaos to order and then back again.” Says glass artist Wright, “I am fascinated by the endless possibilities this material has to offer.” Using hot glass to sculpt each elegant work, he focuses on capturing gesture, form, and surface. A few degrees here or there, a millimeter’s difference in thickness, and the results can vary widely from piece to piece.” With famous contemporary influences—Dale Chihuly’s color palettes and William Morris’s choices of surface treatments—as well as inspiration from indigenous artworks from Native American, African, and pre-Columbian cultures, Wright’s glass pieces fuse a number of beautiful elements into a style completely his own. —Stephanie Love Don Quade, New Beginings, 24 x 48" 12

Adelita: Women Soldiers of the Mexican Revolution Gallery 901, 708 Canyon gallery901.org July 1–27, reception July 1, 5–7 pm Encaustic artist and photographer Angel Wynn honors the legacy of the Adelita warrior through her mixed media images that combine photography with encaustic wax. Adelita was the name given to the women who followed men to war during the Mexican Revolution. Not only did they cook and nurse wounds, they also picked up guns and fought. “I had come across some painted murals that introduced me to these women, and for days all I could think about was the difficult lifestyle they endured,” says Wynn. “A passion to tell their story set in and would not leave me alone.”—Emily Van Cleve Angel Wynn, Fight For Peace, encaustic mixed media, 16 x 16"

Modern Artifacts Malouf on the Plaza Scott Diffrient, turquoise ring 61 Old Santa Fe Trl maloufontheplaza.com Trunk show July 2 An experienced, self-taught lapidary, Galisteo-based jewelry designer Scott Diffrient crafts each of his pieces from the literal ground up—that is, from the raw, uncut mineral to the final, polished presentation. While his best-known adornments employ the Southwest region’s favorite mineral, natural turquoise, he works just as comfortably in such varied materials as sugilite, lapis lazuli, coral, and jade. A student and admirer of ancient cultures, Diffrient imparts stylistic elements from ancient and classical architecture in his “artifacts.” Diffrient will present selections from his work at a trunk show July 2 at Malouf on the Plaza, where his works are offered on an ongoing basis.—Chris Peterson On Horizon Selby Fleetwood Gallery, 600 Canyon selbyfleetwoodgallery.com July 1–13, reception July 1, 5–7:30 pm Artist Jesse Blanchard’s newest paintings and woodblock prints incorporate numerous colorful roughly geometric shapes in patch-like patterning and layers to create compositions of farm and city landscapes. Blanchard’s rough lines and pastoral palette emphasize his inspiration from aerial photography of farmland, yet his subtle blending of light and colors evokes a more harmonious, playful effect. The New Mexico painter will be showing his latest works during this solo show.—SL

Krista Harris, Silent Night, acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 54 x 48"

The Sound Between Line and Color Tansey Contemporary, 652 Canyon tanseycontemporary.com July 1–10, reception July 1, 5–7 pm The latest works of abstract painter Krista Harris integrate new materials and techniques to create rich, textured surfaces, while still employing the rough planes and lines of expressive color that exemplify her works. The Colorado artist begins each piece by listening to sounds, using synesthesia to present the noises in a visible, nonobjective format. “I’m very curious about how we filter information and how that influences what we say and see and do,” she says. “That soundtrack of our daily lives is unique to each of us. It not only varies from person to person but even minute to minute in each person.” Exploring many opposing elements—gestural marks and architectural shapes; opacity and transparency; and restlessness and stillness—Harris maintains that experimentation is fundamental to each finished piece. “I need to feel that anything is possible with each new piece,” she observes, “and when it comes to materials, anything is fair game if it helps me tell the story.”—SL Jesse Blanchard, As the Sun Pushes Through, oil on linen, 30 x 72"
