publisher’s note
|
Welcome to a very special issue of santa fean NOW magazine. We are honored to include the guide to ARTsmart’s Edible Art Tour on pages 3 through 10. This annual event, started over 20 years ago by Connie Axton of Ventana Fine Art and other notable gallery owners, has raised tens of thousands of dollars for art education for Santa Fe schoolchildren. What more noble cause is there than encouraging the creation of art by our children, especially those who might not otherwise be able? Study after study shows the value of engaging children with the making of art, which develops problem-solving skills and creative thinking. The Edible Art Tour takes place Friday and Saturday, each evening targeting a different Santa Fe arts district. Perhaps one of the best parts of the event is that you will have so much fun while also supporting this important work. Your ticket/button entitles you to visit each of the participating galleries and nosh on delectable bites from Santa Fe finest (and most generous) restaurants. While enjoying these treats, you will also be treated to wonderful art at the participating galleries. Be sure to truly absorb the art, because embracing art in our lives is what it’s all about.

galleryFRITZ grand opening opening This Friday night, don’t miss the grand opening of the newest venture by gallery maven Deborah Fritz. Though Fritz already owns and runs two successful Canyon Road galleries, Giacobbe Fritz and GF Contemporary, galleryFRITZ promises a more contemporary feel, and to “focus less on the object and more on the happening.” Fritz plans compelling exhibitions, site-specific installations, multimedia presentations, video projection displays, traditional art programming, and a roster of rotating curators. This nearly 5,000-square-foot white box space in the Railyard district shows emerging, mid-career, and established artists, including John Yoyogi Fortes, Gary Goldberg, Clayton Porter, Karen Hampton, Terri Rolland, Victoria Carlson, and others. Opening night kicks off with 100 Toasts. The (fictitious) Department of Art and Human Uses, appointed by President Trump, has launched a 100 Toasts initiative that aims to bring attention to new galleries by sending “Art Ambassadors,” in this case Senator Kip Tunamelt, to events to have “a belly laugh kind of shindig, one where people from all over come to poke and prod our liberal bubble and celebrate in the arts and humanities. Sometimes us democrats aren’t as cultured as we ought to be, so hell, that’s why I’m doin’ it!” says Tunamelt. The “Senator” and Deborah Fritz will ceremonially open the gallery at 6 pm.—Amanda N.
