PUBLISHER’S NOTE

2016 |

RECENTLY I FOUND MYSELF SITTING with some firstgraders during their art class at Wood Gormley school over in the South Capitol neighborhood. Their teacher, with so much passion in her eyes, told me about the impact of ARTsmart and how it made art supplies available for the children. There, before me, little hands were in the middle of “felting”—and it was exciting to see the focus in their eyes. This is what ARTsmart’s Edible Art Tour events this weekend are all about. Not only will you be seeing some fantastic works in nearly 40 galleries all over town both Friday and Saturday night, you will be tasting delicious creations from Santa Fe’s finest eateries. Your participation in this unique culinary and art event ensures that our local schoolchildren On location at will have what they need to explore the Drury Plaza their creativity. Chef Mark Connell’s culinary expertise lets him have fun in the kitchen creating innovative dishes for his devoted fans.

DOUGLAS MERRIAM

State Capital Kitchen At State Capital Kitchen, you would be wise to tell the server to simply let the kitchen send out dishes. Everything my group and I tasted one hopping Saturday night was spectacular, each dish full of Chef Mark Connell’s clever and unexpected flavor-play. From the simplest bowl of mixed cured olives—made special with the addition of orange zest—to a fully realized celebration of pork (with belly, cracklin’, and pulled pork to boot), the whole evening was a delight. For dessert, we sampled the ice cream (mmm honey-vanilla) made tableside, whisked together with liquid nitrogen and ready in just three minutes! We complemented it with a chocolate bomb flamed with rum. The menu here changes weekly, but I’m hoping some of the yummy things we had will reach your palate.—John Vollertsen State Capital Kitchen, 500 Sandoval, statecapitalkitchen.com

Rumi on Canvas: Solo Exhibition by Rahileh Rokhsari The Longworth Gallery, 530 and 532 Canyon, thelongworthgallery.com Through August 31, reception July 8, 5–8 pm Twenty original oil paintings inspired by Sufi dervish dance and Rumi’s poetry are on exhibit during Rahileh Rokhsari’s fourth solo show at The Longworth Gallery. Rokhsari’s aim is to capture the serenity and spirit of divine love through her visual representation of poetry and dance. Born and raised in an Iranian family of artists, Rokhsari studied physics before immersing herself in art. “Subject and message still play a central role in my paintings, even though at times I hide them within the multiple layers of forms and colors,” says Rokhsari, who currently calls Turkey home. “Over time, the source of my inspiration has migrated to within and has taken a more abstract or surreal form.”—Emily Van Cleve

Presence/Absence ViVO Contemporary 725 Canyon vivocontemporary.com Through August 15 ViVO Contemporary’s new group show, Presence/Absence, explores the idea of that which should be present but isn’t, and that which should not be there, but is felt, seen, or heard. Artists using varied materials—from oil paints to kiln glass to two- and three-dimensional mixed media pieces—create works that imaginatively investigate the drastic and subtle differences between fullness and emptiness. Overall the show will guide viewers to interact with each piece by asking the questions: What is tangible; what is imagined? What is present, and what is absent?—Stephanie Love Carrie Fell and Greg Kelsey, Complementary Contrasts, Sorrel Sky Gallery, 125 W Palace, sorrelsky.com, Through June, reception June 3, 5–7:30 pm

Carrie Fell, Full Regalia, original acrylic, oil on canvas with full resin, 40 x 48"

In honor of Sorrel Sky’s second anniversary in Santa Fe, two of the gallery’s most respected Western-style artists will be showing on June 3. Contemporary painter Carrie Fell’s dreamy and colorful portrayals of iconic Western figures play against Greg Kelsey’s sturdy, kinetic broncbusting, trail-running bronzes in a

show entitled Complementary Contrasts. Kelsey’s own background as a cowboy and rodeo rider is poured into his sculptures, reflecting his deep understanding of natural form and the physics of a wild ride. “I want to learn what’s in me,” Kelsey said in a recent statement. “I want to master the medium and bring it across to others.” Fell’s broad splashes of color capture the Wild West of the imagination, with dynamism and the occasional stroke of humor. Her work has been displayed in the Booth Western Art Museum, the George Bush Presidential Museum and Library, and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.—Anne Maclachlan

Mystic Void Eye on the Mountain Art Gallery, 614 Agua Fria eyeonthemountaingallery.com Through July 1 Madrid, New Mexico’s, own Richard Olson exhibits his newest acrylic paintings, inspired by his spiritual and mystical experiences in the desert. Olson’s pieces master texture, shading, and illuminated colors to depict his metaphorical subjects. Using desert imagery and naturally geometric shapes to fill his vivacious compositions, he mingles folk art, landscape painting, and surrealism in an intuitive style completely his own. The radiant colors and whimsical forms in Olson’s new piece, Warrior Jester from the Endless Void, exemplify his style while also beautifully expressing another world, one where anything is possible. Additional parking for Eye on the Mountain Art Gallery is available behind the gallery on Romero Street.—SL

Virtual Object: A Show of 3-D Printed Works form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center June 10–August 11 Reception June 10, 5–7 pm On the heels of its recent debut on the gallery scene with the artisanal exhibition Made in the Desert, nonprofit gallery form & concept will explore the cutting edge of sculpture creation in a group showcase of works made using 3-D printing technology. The provocative contrast between Virtual Object and the Southwestflavored, handicraft-focused Desert is not lost on form & concept director Frank Rose. “Handmade and computer-made processes need not be at odds with each other,” he said in a recent statement. “As technology increasingly expands into our lives, I think it is important to use these tools consciously and investigate what kinds of artistic communication may be possible.” The two exhibitions run concurrently into August, offering audiences ample opportunity to view both collections and observe how they inform one another.—DS

Rebecca Haines: Featured Artist Pippin Contemporary, 409 Canyon pippincontemporary.com Through June 15, part of the Edible Art Tour (EAT), reception June 10, 5–8 pm Painter Rebecca Haines deeply appreciates the spirituality and presence of animals, something apparent in each of her vibrantly whimsical works. She says animals “carry wisdom of seeing and hearing within them.” Allured by their awareness, Haines tries to learn as much from the animals as she can. “Life can be endlessly magical, if we pay attention [the way animals do],” she says. Using oil paint and china marker (grease pencil) on wooden panels, Haines prefers to paint on wood for its strength and feel, and this material lends itself to her natural subjects. In making her portraits—inspired by dreams and by encounters with these creatures—Haines honors the animals she meets by amplifying their visual voices with color to truly capture their energy. She adds, “[Animals] help us relate to our world, often acting as intermediaries between the civilized and the wild, between the known and the mysterious.”—SL

Bruce Helander: Solo exhibition Rebecca Haines, Mystifyd, oil on panel, 18 x 18" Tansey Contemporary, 652 Canyon tanseycontemporary.com June 10–26, reception June 10, 5–7 pm A graduate of the prominent Rhode Island School of Design, Bruce Helander specializes in collage and assemblage works. With pieces in over 50 museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Smithsonian, and the Art Institute of Chicago, Helander’s prestige has not gone unnoticed. As Tansey Contemporary notes, City Link magazine calls Bruce Helander “[a]rguably the most recognized and successful collage artist in the country...” With combinations of paints, cartoons, photographs, and other found objects, he creates whirlwinds of whimsical imagery that imply deeper meanings. Helander, working also as an art critic, arts writer, and curator, has coordinated over 80 exhibitions, including solo shows for Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Duane Hanson, Jules Olitski, and Dale Chihuly, among others. Helander’s involvement in the contemporary art world reveals his absolute enthusiasm for the visual arts, something also apparent in his meticulously composed collage masterpieces.—SL Bruce Helander, Cactus Chaos, collage, 13 x 11"
