Strolling from gallery to gallery to sample culinary treats while viewing dynamic works of art is a warmer experience since ARTfeast’s Edible Art Tour no longer takes place in February. The 19th annual EAT is scheduled for June 10 on Canyon Road and June 11 in the downtown area. More than 40 top galleries and restaurants join forces to present the best in food and art at this this popular event, which attracts visitors from from around the country. The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is opening two exhibits on Sunday, with Jicarilla Apache artists from 11 am to 4 pm, and storytelling by artist Kate Hodges at noon. Exhibits include Jicarilla: Home Near the Heart of the World (through April 16, 2017) and Eveli: Energy and Significance (through January 15, 2017). Containing more than 80 objects including Jicarilla Apache basketry, micaceous pottery, and beadwork, all dating from the mid19th century onward, Home Near the Heart of the World was created in collaboration with the Jicarilla Apache Nation and the Center Eveli Sabatie’s pendant, Flying Serpent. of Southwest Studies at Ft. Music on the Hill Bring your picnic blanket and dancing shoes (but leave the dog home) to the popular free concert series Music on the Hill at the St. John’s College athletic field. Every Wednesday night, beginning June 15 and ending on July 27, concertgoers are treated to music by some of New Mexico’s finest bands and soloists. State Capital Kitchen At State Capital Kitchen, you would be wise to tell the server to simply let the kitchen send out dishes. Everything my group and I tasted one hopping Saturday night was spectacular, each dish full of Chef Mark Connell’s clever and unexpected flavor-play. From the simplest bowl of mixed cured olives—made special with the addition of orange zest—to a fully realized celebration of pork (with belly, cracklin’, and pulled pork to boot), the whole evening was a delight. For dessert, we sampled the ice cream (mmm honey-vanilla) made tableside, whisked together with liquid nitrogen and ready in just three minutes! We complemented it with a chocolate bomb flamed with rum. In honor of Sorrel Sky’s second anniversary in Santa Fe, two of the gallery’s most respected Western-style artists will be showing on June 3. Contemporary painter Carrie Fell’s dreamy and colorful portrayals of iconic Western figures play against Greg Kelsey’s sturdy, kinetic broncbusting, trail-running bronzes in a
show entitled Complementary Contrasts. Kelsey’s own background as a cowboy and rodeo rider is poured into his sculptures, reflecting his deep understanding of natural form and the physics of a wild ride. “I want to learn what’s in me,” Kelsey said in a recent statement. “I want to master the medium and bring it across to others.” Fell’s broad splashes of color capture the Wild West of the imagination, with dynamism and the occasional stroke of humor. Her work has been displayed in the Booth Western Art Museum, the George Bush Presidential Museum and Library, and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.—Anne Maclachlan

Virtual Object: A Show of 3-D Printed Works form & concept 435 S Guadalupe formandconcept.center June 10–August 11 Reception June 10, 5–7 pm On the heels of its recent debut on the gallery scene with the artisanal exhibition Made in the Desert, nonprofit gallery form & concept will explore the cutting edge of sculpture creation in a group showcase of works made using 3-D printing technology. The provocative contrast between Virtual Object and the Southwestflavored, handicraft-focused Desert is not lost on form & concept director Frank Rose. “Handmade and computer-made processes need not be at odds with each other,” he said in a recent statement. “As technology increasingly expands into our lives, I think it is important to use these tools consciously and investigate what kinds of artistic communication may be possible.” The two exhibitions run concurrently into August, offering audiences ample opportunity to view both collections and observe how they inform one another.—DS
Rebecca Haines: Featured Artist Pippin Contemporary, 409 Canyon pippincontemporary.com Through June 15, part of the Edible Art Tour (EAT), reception June 10, 5–8 pm Painter Rebecca Haines deeply appreciates the spirituality and presence of animals, something apparent in each of her vibrantly whimsical works. She says animals “carry wisdom of seeing and hearing within them.” Allured by their awareness, Haines tries to learn as much from the animals as she can. “Life can be endlessly magical, if we pay attention [the way animals do],” she says. Using oil paint and china marker (grease pencil) on wooden panels, Haines prefers to paint on wood for its strength and feel, and this material lends itself to her natural subjects. In making her portraits—inspired by dreams and by encounters with these creatures—Haines honors the animals she meets by amplifying their visual voices with color to truly capture their energy. She adds, “[Animals] help us relate to our world, often acting as intermediaries between the civilized and the wild, between the known and the mysterious.”—SL
