PUBLISHER’S NOTE
WELCOME TO THIS very special issue of Santa Fean NOW, dedicated to the Art of Home. We hope you participate in the Art of Home Tour, which is a unique opportunity to enjoy art from local galleries and studios in a variety of homes, much like how you’d enjoy the artwork in your own home. In addition, you will have the opportunity to tour several beautiful homes and properties that are offered through Keller Williams Realty. Your support of this event directly helps ARTsmart New Mexico and all of the fine work they do to provide art education for local schoolchildren. Their facility here in Santa Fe is simply wonderful, and a perfect place for children to discover the joys of art, both creating and viewing. In an era where arts programs in danger of being cut, ARTsmart performs an incredibly important function in our community. For many years, Santa Fean and Santa Fean NOW magazines have been proud supporters of ARTsmart, as we know how important their work is. So, on this beautiful late winter weekend, use this guide to take you to places you’ve never been before—not just to beautiful homes, but to incredible places of the heart. Perhaps you’ll find your next new home, or discover a beautiful piece of art that is perfect for your current home.

Wil B, left, and Kev Marcus, right, are Black Violin, a hip-hop, jazz, funk, and classical duo.
Black Violin P ERFORMA N CE Violist Wil B and violinist Kev Marcus met at a performing arts high school in Florida. The young string players, who perform at the Lensic on March 1, bonded over a shared love of the music of Stuff Smith (1909–1967), a jazz violinist. Now performing as Black Violin—also the name of Smith’s last album—they bring rigorous classical chops to all sorts of music, hip-hop to Shostakovich. Alicia Keys, Fifty Cent, and the Eagles are just a few of the artists who have shared a stage with Black Violin. Both men went to college on full music scholarships, and they are concerned that, in an era when schools are cutting arts programs, urban youth in particular won’t have the opportunities they had. They perform for students whenever possible.—Lisa J. Van Sickle

EVE NT The Pastel Society of New Mexico (PSNM) has held national, juried exhibitions since 1991. This year, Sorrel Sky hosts the prestigious show. About 150 artists each submit up to three pieces for judging, and jurors select 140–145 works to hang in the exhibition. All subject matter is welcome. NMPS membership is not limited to New Mexicans; members hail from over half the states, as well as Canada and Europe. Expect a variety of subjects, sizes, and styles, all painted by artists committed to the medium of soft pastel.—LVS

ARTsmart New Mexico, a 501(c)3 nonprofit housed in the Siler Arts District, is one of the heroes of Santa Fe’s art scene. ARTsmart works to inspire the area’s youngest and brightest art stars—Northern New Mexico’s youth. This weekend’s Art of Home Tour and Saturday’s annual dinner and auction are important fundraisers for ARTsmart. Since its inception in 1993, ARTsmart has spent over $5 million to provide student art programs and art materials for students in elementary through high school. ARTsmart also works to help fund the Art Changes Lives Scholarship program, which is awarded each year to a high school senior intending to pursue visual arts in a postsecondary setting. ARTsmart not only provides accredited instructors, lesson plans, materials, and scholarships, but also collaborates with local galleries and organizations, including SITE Santa Fe. ARTsmart’s programs are conducted independently in public schools across Northern New Mexico. ARTsmart’s mission is “to serve our communities by providing educational opportunities in the arts that promote confidence, selfdiscovery, and creative problem-solving skills.” ARTsmart students learn art history and vocabulary, observe various art techniques, create artwork of their own, participate in positively focused critiques, and exhibit their unique creations. ARTsmart’s board of directors, made up of volunteers from the Santa Fe community, is actively engaged in all aspects of fundraising and programs. The Art of Home Tour and the annual dinner and auction are two of ARTsmart’s most popular fundraisers of the year. The Art of Home Tour, presented in conjunction with Keller Williams Realty,

ARTsmart annual dinner and auction

You Will Be Served . . . Harvey Girls Style, ARTsmart’s annual dinner and auction, will be held at a former Harvey House, La Fonda on the Plaza. The 2018 honorary chair, Stephen Fried, a Fred Harvey Company historian and the author of Appetite for America: Fred Harvey and the Business of Civilizing the Wild West—One Meal at a Time, will be the featured speaker. There will also be veteran Harvey Girls in attendance. The Fred Harvey Company (1875–1968) is famous for building reputable hotels and fine dining establishments along the nation’s railways, particularly the Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe. La Fonda on the Plaza will carry on that tradition with a delectable meal from their chefs. Back by popular demand, Santa Fe High School culinary arts students, along with their instructor Myoko Costello, will present decadent and delicious desserts. This year’s honorary artist is Barry McCuan, represented by Ventana Fine Art. He has shared his skills and talents with Santa Fe High School’s Art II class and mentored them, along with art teacher Lori Andrews, in the creation of amazing water-soluble oil paintings depicting our gorgeous New Mexican landscape. These works of art will be for sale in the silent auction. McCuan has generously donated an original painting to the live auction.
