PUBLISHER’S NOTE

|

OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT TWO WEEKS, our fair little town will be welcoming spring breakers who are using this treasured respite from their school and work schedules to get away and try something different. Santa Fe is good at providing a variety of activities to satisfy that goal, ranging from skiing to golfing, and from hiking a mountain trail to wandering into an art gallery. Our nightlife will also be much more lively, as these springtime visitors come here to eat, drink, laugh, and explore new music. Spring break time is not just for our guests, though. We locals take advantage of the added energetic vibe in the air. Clearly, our weather is cooperating as well, putting us all in the mood for spring. This issue’s entertainment calendar is filled with great music, exciting art, and lots of events to help us celebrate both spring and Santa Fe together. Winter seems to be at least temporarily behind us, so pull out the shorts, the bike, the walking shoes, and a light jacket and savor this wonderful season in Santa Fe—my favorite time.

It’s an Irish weekend at the Lensic when the five-member Celtic folk group Lúnasa performs with bluegrass-rock-funk artist Tim O’Brien for a selection of rousing songs reflecting both Irish and American musical history. The eclectic performance—which will cover ancient Irish tunes, Appalachian folk, and much more—at the Lensic will be one of the final stops on the Lúnasa-O’Brien national tour.— Anne Maclachlan Lúnasa with Tim O’Brien, March 19, 7:30 pm, $15–$40, The Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W San Francisco, ticketssantafe.org

Meow Wolf: House of Eternal Return

KATE RUSSELL

After 14 months of creativity and construction, the new 33,000-square-foot Meow Wolf Art Complex is ready for guests, opening to the public on Friday, March 18.

At 20,000 square feet, the House of Eternal Return installation is ten times the size of Meow Wolf’s previous project, Due Return.

Dan Namingha: Living Treasure This year’s Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Living Treasure Award honors Tewa-Hopi painter and sculptor Dan Namingha with a long-term exhibition and a reception at the museum on March 20. Namingha’s work has made him a Santa Fe favorite, as well as an internationally respected artist, for many years; his unusual abstracts reflect the soul of his Native roots and the feel of the surrounding landscapes. The PBS documentary film Dan Namingha: Seeking Center in Two Worlds will screen at 1 pm, followed by a Q&A with Namingha at 2. The exhibition will feature 11 of Namingha’s works in various media.—AM Landscape of an Artist: Living Treasure, Dan Namingha; opening Sunday, March 20, 1–4 pm; exhibit through mid-September; free with museum admission; Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, 710 Camino Lejo, indianartsandculture.org Purchased and renovated by internationally acclaimed author and arts supporter George R. R. Martin, the complex promises an unusual degree of interactivity. Meow Wolf houses a community workshop, complete with supplies; the CHIMERA youth art education center; an exhibit space; a gift shop; a 300-person capacity liveperformance venue; and the Meow Wolf keystone project: the 20,000-square-foot House of Eternal Return, a massive interactive art project. The installation is unlike anything else, providing a sort of choose-yourown-path interactive storyline as each visitor wanders through doorways, crawl spaces, and other entrances to “multiverses” created by teams of artists. Meow Wolf promises content appropriate for all ages, and welcomes children to its venue.—AM Meow Wolf Art Complex grand opening; VIP gala March 17, 5 pm ($250); opening events March 18, 2 pm–2 am; March 19, 10 am–2 am; March 20, 9 am–2 am; $15–$25 (per day); see online for specific event times throughout the weekend; Meow Wolf Art Complex, 1352 Rufina Circle, meowwolf.com

Dan Namingha, Solstice #20, acrylic on canvas, 72 x 72"

The Meow Wolf collective specializes in creating intricate, immersive art experiences with an alien flavor. The vast House is designed to appeal to kids and adults alike.

Unbuttoned: Gay Life in the Santa Fe Arts Scene by Walter Cooper Santa Fe’s gay community WALTER isn’t restricted to a bar or COOPER a club; it’s another facet of the cultural identity of the City Different. Longtime residents and repeat visitors alike know that has been the case for UNBUTTONED decades, especially in the Gay Life in the Walter Cooper Santa Fe Arts Scene art scene. “For years, this was A Memoir a small community interesting U N Bof U T T very ONED women and men who had established quite wonderful reputations here for their art, writing, and photography,” says Walter Cooper, who recently self-published his memoir Unbuttoned: Gay Life in the Santa Fe Arts Scene. “Many weren’t comfortable in the places they were from, and Santa Fe was attractive to gays and lesbians. … They could explore their sexuality along with their art here.” Cooper moved to Santa Fe as an aspiring artist in the 1970s and witnessed firsthand how the art colonies from the early 1900s in New Mexico had laid the groundwork for the community of gay and straight artists he joined. Now 76 years old, Cooper is still friends with many of these artistic characters, whom he interviewed to corroborate his colorful memories. “There’s no other book that I could find written about this period,” the author says. “I didn’t want this history to be ignored or forgotten like so much gay history is. I wanted to tell my story.” Filled with humorous anecdotes and more than 80 photographs, this regional name-dropping romp through Santa Fe’s ranks of notable personalities is a great read for anyone interested in Santa Fe’s artistic history. Iconic locales like Canyon Road, the Santa Fe Opera, and La Fonda hotel are seen in a different light as the backdrop to Cooper’s and his contemporaries’ hijinx. Those who live here or visit may even now sense a shadow of those bygone gay days so vividly portrayed by Cooper.—Cristina Olds Where gays live, creativity thrives!

For 100 years, the Santa Fe/Taos region of New Mexico has nurtured a rich gay culture, yet most people have no idea what an enormous impact lesbians and gay men play, and have played, in shaping the art and cultural mecca of the American Southwest.

Cooper’s unbridled memoir paints a vivid picture of the queer folk who energize Santa Fe, America’s favorite art town. It’s packed with LGBT history, camp humor, 80 photos, and personal encounters with such icons as Georgia O’Keeffe, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Tennessee Williams, and Elizabeth Taylor. But the heart of his story spotlights the local painters, potters, writers, poets, photographers, designers, tastemakers, and opera people he’s known and loved for 40 years. Focusing on the 1970s & ’80s when Santa Fe shifted from a quaint art colony to a cultural boom town, Cooper takes you behind Santa Fe’s fabled adobe walls and gives a voice to a dynamic gay community that helps make “the City Different” truly different. While striving to establish his own identity as a full-time painter, Cooper tells what it’s like to risk everything to be an artist.

Frank Buffalo Hyde Solo Exhibition Tansey Contemporary, 652 Canyon, tanseycontemporary.com March 11–April 1 Reception March 11, 5–7 pm Recognized as a leader in contemporary Native Art, Frank Buffalo Hyde believes it is an artist’s duty to define his or her times in order to reflect, provide commentary, and enrich conversations between cultures. Hyde employs popular culture imagery in his bold paintings to reveal alternative perspectives on modern-day Native experiences. His latest series of graphically styled artwork begs his audience to ponder how technology affects the lenses through which we view reality. Hyde explains the layers of emotion and intellect in his work, saying, “[I overlap] imagery to mimic the way the mind holds information: nonlinear and without separation.”—SL

Tom Kirby Mathematica Winterowd Fine Art, 701 Canyon fineartsantafe.com March 11–23 Reception March 11, 5–7 pm Tom Kirby’s newest 64 works will be on display during his upcoming solo show at Winterowd Fine Art. This series revitalizes his minimalist colorheavy style by also incorporating his appreciation of mathematics. These works feature perpetual, pure forms; diagrams; and mathematical formulas. His paintings and mixed media works strike up visual conversations between textured planes of bold color and scholastic imagery, revealing the beautiful balance of both raw and refined. Kirby says, “My interest in these equations and geometrical diagrams is their permanent and eternal nature. Mathematical truth [is] essential and enduring; these are also the aesthetic qualities of true art.”—Stephanie Love
