PUBLISHER’S NOTE

|

THIS WEEKEND IN SANTA FE is particularly special, as we witness the devout faith exercised by many in our community when they make the trek on foot to El Santuario de Chimayó in observation of Easter. To me, these quiet, solemn processions are a reminder of both the deep spirituality that Santa Fe possesses in its many forms, and of the pilgrimages other religions have made through the centuries. A time of reflection appears in many faiths, and there’s nothing like a long walk to enhance that. There is also an aspect of celebration connected with Easter, and Santa Fe is alive this weekend with a variety of wonderful music acts at our many venues. David Crosby, a founding member of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, & Nash, takes the stage at the Lensic in a unique concert. Despite his foibles, there’s never been a doubt regarding his musical talents. Crosby is touring far less these days, so this is truly a concert to take in while you can. And finally, for something wild and wet, head up to the Santa Fe Ski Area on Saturday, April 2 for the pond skimming contest. Complete with costumes, contestants use their skis and snowboards to skim across a pond of freezing water. This wonderful end-of-the-season tradition is back—and it’s free if you don’t ski.

La Puerta Originals, owned by Melissa and Scott Coleman, has caught the attention of Handcrafted America, a television series showcasing artisans who still utilize traditional construction methods. Melissa and Scott, thrilled with the opportunity to share their creations, agreed to be featured on the program. “Handcrafted America only features artists who make things in the U.S.,” says Melissa, Local business La Puerta Originals will be featured adding that the duo enjoyed filming, on Handcrafted America this Tuesday, March 29. but it demanded a lot of hard work. “Six crewmembers and the host, Jill Wagner, were here [from South Carolina and California] for two 12-hour days filming at our facility.” La Puerta Originals’ skilled artisans maintain a focus on sustainability by using components of the thousands of doors and other supplies from their property on Highway 14 to build new doors, gates, cabinets, and mantels. Seeking this amalgam of influences from distinct cultures, their customers (almost 90 percent are from outside New Mexico) also value La Puerta’s collaborative design process. “We have had many clients who wander our yard for hours and find a special connection to the materials they find,” Melissa observes. “We then work with them to incorporate those pieces into their own homes or projects.” The La Puerta Originals episode of Handcrafted America debuts on the INSP network on March 29 at 6 pm, and will air again on April 12 at 6:30 pm.—Stephanie Love

a thriller different It’s tempting to enjoy a book that takes place in a familiar city simply because the tale unfolds around vivid descriptions of favorite haunts; but James Scarantino’s The Drum Within is a gripping crime thriller in its own right. Scarantino’s Detective Denise Aragon, a Santa Fe Police Department cop with a personal drive for justice, follows the underbelly of Santa Fe life and judicial corruption in pursuit of a serial killer who taunts the law with every Canyon Road artwork he creates. To The Drum Within, Scarantino brings the rawness of his experiences as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney—along with the detailed style of his days as a crime reporter—to create a suspenseful novel littered with used Lotaburger papers and smelling of green chile and stale beer. Scarantino will be signing copies of the book at Collected Works at 6 pm on Thursday, March 24. —Anne Maclachlan James Scarantino book signing: The Drum Within, March 24, 6 pm , free, Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse, 202 Galisteo, collectedworksbookstore.com

“A RETROSPECTIVE OF THE LAST 20 YEARS would be the easy thing to do,” says Tom Mossbrucker, Artistic Director of the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (ASFB), “but that’s not who we are.” Premiering its ambitious anniversary season in Santa Fe on April 1, ASFB celebrates its past with a nod to the future. “We brought back last year’s fan favorite with Alejandro Cerrudo’s cerebral Silent Ghost as well as two new pieces,” Mossbrucker says. These pieces are newcomer Fernando Melo’s Re:play and Huma Rojo by star choreographer Cayetano Soto. “For our 20th,” says Mossbrucker, “we’ve highlighted the two aspects of our identity—creating new work and finding new choreographers—as [a] way to look forward.” Huma Rojo, a departure from the dark, angst-ridden work Soto has created for the ASFB in the past, has a celebratory mood underscored with popular music from the 1960s, bright costumes, and lively lighting. “Rojo will make you want to get up and salsa dance in the audience,” laughs Craig Black, a company member since 2011. Black explains that the complex landscape of the pieces “challenges us to grow as artists,” adding that “there is a kind of unsaid magic” in the company’s ability to renew its repertory so often. To celebrate 20 years, ASFB takes its trademark adventuristic style on the road. “We’re going to perform in Venice, Italy, for the first time,” Black says with excitement. “That’s huge for our anniversary. It’s going to be a fun and big year.” —Joseph Case

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

Farewell Show Ed Larson Gallery and Studio 821 Canyon, edlarson.com April 1–30, Farewell party April 1 12–8 pm A multi-decade Canyon Road fixture at the Stables compound across from El Farol, “Wonderful Ed” Larson’s gallery and studio will close this year with his retirement. The humble, offbeat, tin-roofed gallery—where a large, brightly painted fish sculpture and a sign reading “Jesus Said Buy Folk Art” loom over the entrance—is one of the most recognizable on Canyon from the outside, and on the inside one of the most eclectic. Larson has been remarkably comfortable working in numerous media and styles, from traditional Western to expressionist paintings, and from lighthearted, colorful sculpture to intricate bronzes. The reception for Larson’s final show will double as a retirement party; not unintentionally on his part, the get-together will take place April Fool’s Day from noon to 8 pm, and he will remain in residence until the month’s end.—Dylan Syverson

BARRIE BROWN HAS SHOWN in ViVO Contemporary’s three previous Giving Voice to Image exhibitions, where the gallery’s visual artists work with local poets in a collaborative effort that inspires new words and imagery. For the past two years Brown teamed up with poet Mike Burwell. Their collaboration felt so successful that she and Burwell decided to work together again this year. “In previous shows Mike created poetry based on my art,” explains Brown, who creates landscapes out of kiln glass. “For this show we took a different approach. I read a book of his landscape poems before making a new kiln glass piece about water.” Giving Voice to Image 4 features nine poems alongside nine artworks, with two poetry readings also scheduled during the show. Brown’s piece Then to a Different Shore ended up inspiring Burwell to write a new poem titled “The Shore Will Open.” Sculptor Vincent Faust is relatively new to the gallery, so this year’s Giving Voice to Image show is his inaugural event. Poet Darryl Williams, who participated last year, was drawn to one of Faust’s steel pieces displayed in the gallery and asked him if they could work together. “Darryl had his eye on Excision and wanted to write a poem that reflected how he felt about it,” says Faust. “He thinks of it as organic and skeletal, like bones in a desert. What’s interesting for me is that I started to look at my piece differently.”—Emily Van Cleve
