publisher’s note

|

The other day I encountered several hundred motorcycles heading up I-25 into Santa Fe en route to Washington, DC, for a Memorial Day arrival at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I was moved by their sheer numbers, but also by the dedication apparent as they honor those who sacrificed their lives for this country. It was truly magnificent, and a reminder of the meaning of the Memorial Day holiday. Enjoying this holiday weekend will not be difficult. These pages and the santafeannow.com website are filled with activities. Tomorrow night, there are several significant gallery openings (see the many listings) and our music calendar is equally packed. The weather forecast looks unusually warm and sunny, so it should be a great weekend for outdoor activities. Try the quick and convenient hiking route along the Dale Ball Trails. The hike to Picacho Peak makes for a nice view-filled walk in the foothills. If you’re feeling a bit warm, head up to the ski area where the hiking is at higher elevation and the air is cooler. The point is to get off the couch and soak in all of Santa Fe events and incredible weather. This is what we’ve been waiting for.

Native Treasures Indian Arts Festival

music and movies in the Railyard The Levitt AMP Santa Fe Music Series kicks off their second season of free concerts at the Railyard Plaza on Saturday, May 26. Produced by the Convergence Project and AMP Concerts, the Oasis Festival features local teen bands, performers from Wise Fool New Mexico and NDI, and headliners the Overcoats, an electronic pop duo. The weekly series runs through August 25, with a show almost every Saturday evening. Whether your musical taste runs to Cambodian psychedelic pop (Dengue Fever, August 11), southern rock (The Bright Light Social Hour, June 23), or Santa Fe Salutes Tom Petty, on Friday, July 27, these shows give you a reason to head for the tracks. There is room for dancing, space for your lawn chair, good views from the patios of area restaurants, and usually a food truck or two hanging around. Starting time is 7 pm, right about when the day’s heat starts to abate. AMP also keeps Santa Feans entertained with their series of free movies in the Railyard. The series opens June 1 with Lion King, the 1994 animated favorite. Between June 1 and August 24, the eight films include The Jerk, CryBaby, and Black Panther. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for seating, a picnic if you wish (but no alcohol), or patronize the fleet of food trucks. All films are familyfriendly, and starting time is 8 pm.—Lisa J. Van Sickle performance

festival Since the show’s inception in 2005, Native Treasures has generated over $4 million in sales for Native American artists. Now in its 14th year, this nationally recognized Native art market and benefit, hosted by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC), seeks to up the ante for this already-must-attend event. This year, the MIAC Living Treasure and featured artist is Taos Pueblo jeweler Maria Samora, who will be honored in a Friday evening ceremony. Samora’s work is decidedly minimalist and absolutely stunning. She says, “For me, I really want to break down these boundaries and these stereotypes of what people think Native jewelry should be. I just want my jewelry to speak for itself.” Her metalwork techniques are varied and are adapted from numerous influences, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Syrians, and even the Korean method of keum-boo, which involves applying thin sheets of gold to silver. On Saturday, don’t miss the champagne breakfast and early buying, and at 2 pm a new addition to the event—a fashion show. In between, or after, take the opportunity to meet some of the 200 artists selling everything from traditional baskets and pottery to contemporary painting, sculpture, jewelry, and more.—Amanda N. Pitman

Native Treasures Indian Arts Festival, May 25–27, Friday pre-show celebration and benefit 5–7:30 pm, 2018 Living Treasures ceremony at 5:45 pm, $125; Saturday champagne breakfast and early bird buying, 8–10 am, $25–$40; general admission, 10 am–5 pm, fashion show at 2 pm, free; Sunday 10 am–4 pm, free; Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 W Marcy, nativetreasures.org Maria Samora’s elegant gold bracelet shows why she has been named the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Living Treasure for 2018.

Top: Dengue Fever blends Cambodian Khmer-rock with American indie rock. Hear the unique result August 11 at the Railyard. Left: Hatim Belyamani, who performs as H.A.T., will be at the Railyard June 9. He mixes traditional Moroccan instruments with electronica.

Creature Creature Pippin Contemporary 409 Canyon pippincontemporary.com Through June 6 Reception May 25, 5–7 pm Rebecca Haines’s new body of work, Creature Creature, comes from the Latin crēēatūra meaning the “act of creating” or “thing created,” specifically a living being, especially an animal. Haines says, “For me, they are my muse, my playmates, my teachers; mystical or mortal, they inspire me to be my best self, more aware of my world, and a better caretaker of our shared home.” Expect to see works with abstract mark-making, a merging of defined form into ambiguous spaces, and the walking of a fine line in this show at Pippin Contemporary.—Amanda N. Pitman

Artist Anniversary Reception The Longworth Gallery 530 Canyon thelongworthgallery.com May 25, 5–8 pm Each year on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, The Longworth Gallery holds a reception to kick off the summer season, featuring work by all of the gallery’s artists. Longworth carries the work of a selection of metaphorical realists, including painters, sculptors, jewelers, furniture makers, and more. Vladimir Kush and Michael Parkes are among the artists represented. While The Longworth Gallery stays mum about which artists will be there, considering it “part of the intrigue,” we have it on good authority that painters from Turkey and Australia will be in attendance.—Lisa J. Neo-cultural Narratives Blue Rain Gallery 544 S Guadalupe blueraingallery.com May 25–June 9 Reception May 25, 5–7 pm Glass demonstration May 25–26, 11 am –3 pm Blue Rain presents four Native American artists, each using traditional elements in contemporary work. Dan Friday (Lummi Nation) works in glass. He creates baskets, totems, and animals, all reflecting his Lummi heritage. Starr Hardridge (Muscogee Creek Nation), paints in a pointillist style that resembles traditional beadwork. Chris Pappan is of Osage, Kaw, Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux, and European heritage. His current work is based on 19th century ledger drawings, using 21st century elements in his imagery. Thomas “Breeze” Marcus began his artistic career with graffiti and murals, and now paints on canvas. The basketry of his Tohono O’odham ancestors underlies his abstract, geometric paintings.—LVS

The Secret Life of Paint Steve Elmore Contemporary 839 Paseo de Peralta elmoreindianart.com June 1–30 Reception June 1, 4–7 pm A lifelong New Mexican, Sina Brush grew up in Albuquerque in the 1950s and majored in lithography and drawing at the University of New Mexico in the 1960s. By the 1970s, she had moved to Santa Fe where she worked for both the New Above: Sina Brush, Cloud #2 (detail), oil on masonite, 48 x 48" Mexico Museum of Art and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. She has held positions at several Santa Fe galleries, and managed the gallery of photographer Laura Gilpin, also serving as Gilpin’s personal secretary. In The Secret Life of Paint, Brush illustrates the importance of paint itself as subject, something distinctly differing from the image. She states that “. . . texture, variation of color, and all the possibilities of oil pigment combined with an image conjure up the entire work, combining the separate lives of image and of paint, creating my idea of what art means to me.” Brush often depicts the state’s iconic skies and expansive landscapes, endeavoring to transfer the feeling of the open, natural dynamic to the viewer though color, light, and form.—ANP Jerry Jordan, Liz Wolf, and William Haskell Manitou Galleries 123 W Palace manitougalleries.com June 1–15 Reception June 1, 5–7:30 pm Manitou kicks off the summer season with a show for two painters and a sculptor. Jerry Jordan did not grow up with art as a part of his life, but by his late teens he knew he wanted to paint. Around that same time, he first fell under the spell of Taos. A few decades later, he lives and paints in Taos, drawing inspiration from the landscape and the Taos masters who preceded him. Sculptor Liz Wolf was raised in a family that valued art. She works in both bronze and glass, and she portrays people, animals, and hybrids of the two. William Haskell paints in acrylic and watercolor. Although he trained to be a wildlife Above: Liz Wolf, Then The Rain Came, artist, he now portrays the landscape, distorted in bronze, 22 x 9 x 9" both color and form to move beyond realism.—LVS

Residue: Images by Joshua Michael Schrei JFD gallery 1221 Flagman Way, A2 santafeframing.com June 1–30 Reception June 1, 5–7 pm Photographer Joshua Michael Schrei is a lifelong student of the customs of India, and he lectures internationally on the aesthetics of the Indian temple experience and rare Indian goddess traditions. His exhibition, Residue, aims to provide a chromatic counterbalance to a time when modern life seems stark. However, Residue is more than a collection of stunning, bright, textural images—it is an attempt to return the viewer to rich inner geographies, and places within the mind that drip, teem, and overflow. Schrei notes that, “One of the experiences that defines the Indian temple space is the inundation of vibrant offerings on every available inch of space . . .. Deity images are lathered in butter, smeared in vermillion powder, bathed in milk, draped in flowers, honored with oil and ash. . . . The effect of this residue in photographs is vibrant, tactile, painterly, and conveys a geography that we don’t see much in the West.”—ANP

This is the West Sorrel Sky Gallery 125 W Palace sorrelsky.com June 1–30 Reception June 1, 5–7:30 pm Jim Rey and Maura Allen both paint the American West, but that is where the similarity in their work ends. Rey, in his first show at Sorrel Sky’s Santa Fe gallery, spends time on Western ranches and has a commitment to portraying that world. His paintings often contain wry humor as well as realistic depictions of horses, mountain landscapes, and the accoutrements of ranching. His images have been used on the covers of Louis L’Amour’s Western fiction. Maura Allen’s work covers the same territory, but her approach is decidedly contemporary. Graphic design, pop art, and her background as a photographer inform her paintings. Allen’s subject is often reduced to a silhouette, with pattern filling the form.—LVS
