The lights are appearing around town as we head towards the holidays, while the temperatures are finally suggesting that the trappings of winter are here. Will you be celebrating, or will the holidays be draining, with the only relief being that they will eventually end? Being in Santa Fe is the perfect antidote for any Scroogeness that may overtake you. The Symphony is having a special holiday concert, and throughout the month of December there there are seasonal performances such as Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s presentation of The Nutcracker. I’ll wait for the next issue of NOW to discuss the actual Christmas celebrations, but there’s so much going on, all done as only Santa Fe can do it. I’m especially amazed by our decorations. Whether it’s the trees on the Plaza, holiday lights, farolitos, or evergreen garnishes, Santa Fe does the holidays like no place else. With a little snow on the ground, the lights twinkle like the winter wonderland that we all cherish. I do believe it’s the combination of colors and lights here that make it all so unique and special. Regardless of how you process the holidays, don’t let the beauty and the activities of our community pass you by. Being here is always special, but with the holiday magic, this is the best place in the world.

holiday music Santa Fe’s concert halls, churches, and other venues are all bursting with music during December as groups large and small celebrate the holidays. Here are a few to put on your calendar. After stops in Roswell, Corrales, and Placitas, The Santa Fe Opera presents mezzo-soprano Sarah Coit and baritone Jorge Espino in a concert at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis de Assisi on December 15. Expect holiday and winter-themed selections along with arias and duets from the operatic repertoire. Also expect a crowd—this free event fills the cathedral. Santa Fe Desert Chorale reunites for area concerts December 16–23, in a program titled Home For the Holidays. Featuring carols and lullabies from North and South America, catch the chorale at Cristo Rey on the 16th or at the Cathedral Basilica from December 20–23. Guillermo Figueroa leads The Santa Fe Symphony in Christmas Treasures, an afternoon of holiday and winterthemed music at 4 pm on December 10. Ranging from the oh-so-familiar to the less-so, the concert includes a side-by-side performance with the Santa Fe Youth Symphony. December 19, The Santa Fe Symphony Chorus and Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble collaborate in Carols & Choruses, a free concert and sing-along held at the Cathedral Basilica. The Symphony Brass and cathedral organ accompany. Santa Fe Pro Musica Baroque Ensemble performs at 6 pm and 8 pm each evening from December 20–24. The concerts, in the intimate Loretto Chapel, include Bach, Handel, and Telemann, along with a selection of traditional carols. Mezzo-soprano Deborah Domanski and contralto Avery Amereau alternate performances, and Stephen Redfield leads. Pro Musica returns to modern times with a December 29 concert, Love, the Magician. Violinist Benjamin Beilman takes the solo part in Bernstein’s Serenade After Plato’s Symposium, and the concert includes works by Copland, de Falla, and Santa Fe resident Aaron Stern. Performance Santa Fe continues their tradition of early evening concerts on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. This year, they have chosen some of the most well-known music in the symphonic repertoire: Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with pianist Joyce Yang and Dvorˇák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” on the 24th; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 paired with violinist Augustin Hadelich playing the Mendelssohn violin concerto on the 31st.—Lisa Van Sickle Dates, times, locations, and prices vary. perform ance Six local musicians—Paul Brown, Polly Tapia Ferber, Nicholas Kunz, Willow Roberts, Char Rothschild, and Melinda Russial—perform Friday as EVET, the Turkish word for “yes.” Their concert, in San Miguel Mission, includes music from Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Turkey, and Armenia. Music from this region is harmonically complex and rhythmically intricate and compelling, reflecting both Asian and Eastern European influences. EVET uses a combination of traditional instruments such as darbuka, duduk, and oud, combined with voice, violin, clarinet, and accordion.—LVS

PREVIEWS
Beyond the Fences Meyer Gallery 225 Canyon meyergalleries.com December 8–14 Reception December 8, 5–7 pm Like many an artist before him, Douglas Fryer has had to balance economic realities with the desire to make a living painting. He found a time-honored solution, learning the art of illustration as well as fine art. Teaching jobs have taken Fryer across the country and back, strengthening his love for and understanding of the landscape. Fryer’s paintings are loose, atmospheric, and not burdened with excess detail. He says, “I tend to see the land as shapes, patterns, and edges.” He shows the beauty in a rutted road or an almost colorless winter landscape as easily as in a lush springtime scene. Strong composition underlies everything Fryer paints, and many of his landscapes lie at the edges of abstraction, where shape, pattern, and edge are everything.—LVS
