In this special issue of NOW, we have all the information you need to attend the 2017 Santa Fe Independent Film Festival. When it comes to artistic endeavor, Santa Fe is no one-trick pony. Having just been to the reopening of SITE Santa Fe, I’m reminded of the blending of film with other genres. Whether it be literature, fine art, music, or performing arts, Santa Fe is an epicenter of creativity. This festival is evidence that our artistic appreciaton reaches into film as well. Santa Fe is blessed to have such a wonderful organization as Santa Fe Independent Film Festival to bring these films and their followers to our doorstep. Of course, one of the most important aspects of the festival is the ease of taking in and enjoying this assortment of films at various venues right here in town. It’s easy, affordable, and provides a great variety. Be sure to check the information in this issue for schedules and titles. I especially appreciate the fact that film allows all of our senses to be stimulated simultaneously to deliver a message. Be sure to take it all in!

The artists in the Galisteo Studio Tour make everything from weavings to retablos, like this one by Jean Anaya Moya.

2017 Galisteo studio tour tour Autumn in New Mexico is a magical time. The leaves change colors, crisp air swirls about, and the fall art studio tours are in full swing. Area studio tours offer locals and visitors a chance to meet the artists, discover their process, and perhaps pick up a unique piece to take home. The Galisteo Studio Tour is a must for both art aficionados and foodies. Each year, Cocina de Mela serves traditional New Mexican cuisine in the community center, including a to-die-for red chile. Jambo Café is serving African food, while Tanya’s Treats corners the market on desserts. Then there’s the art. Jean Anaya Moya’s Spanish colonial pieces, Judy Tuwaletstiwa’s paintings (which incorporate glass), Barbara Holloway’s handwoven clothing, and hand-forged custom knives by Arthur Lynn are just some samples of what is available. Jewelry, photography, paintings, and more all await.—Lisa Van Sickle

Taos-made Cortez screens at Santa Fe Independent Film Festival
A journey of heart, soul, and back roads, the Taos-made film Cortez (starring Arron Shiver, Cheryl Nichols, and Cassidy Freeman) is screening at the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival.
peter prato
e v ent When actress and part-time Santa Fe resident Cassidy Freeman (NCIS, Doubt, Longmire, Smallville, and more) heard about her friend Cheryl Nichols’s project, Cortez, she signed on right away as executive producer. With the town of Taos playing a solid background role in this strong story, the film has been picked up to screen at the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival next week. Through the eyes of lead character Jesse, Cortez takes a gritty back road through life, relationships, and the Northern New Mexico countryside to reach its resolution in the fictional town of Cortez. It’s not only the mountains and deeply hued skies of Taos that lend their presence to the film; it’s little asides about Dennis Hopper and Mabel Dodge Luhan that bring additional smiles to local audiences. Freeman, who praises the film for being so relatable, explains, “We’re always on our own journey, and we never know when it’s going to coincide with what we want.” She notes that the production was touched by more than a little Taos magic mixed with reality. For a start, co-writers Nichols and Arron Shiver—who also star as one-time couple Anne and Jesse, taking a second chance—fell in love themselves during the making of the film. Then there was the moment a herd of wild mustangs suddenly appeared, adding beauty and wildness to a mountainside shot while Jesse has a painful phone conversation. Oddly, Freeman says, it was the lack of area cellphone service that added the final touch of camaraderie and warmth that shows clearly onscreen. “It caused us to become more present, to listen better, and to be considerate of one another,” she says, adding with a laugh, “and to remember things.” —Anne Maclachlan

PREVIEWS
Friendship Forged in Gold Patina Gallery 131 W Palace, patina-gallery.com October 13–November 12 Reception October 13, 5–7 pm Claire Kahn and Andrew Fisher, friends for more than two decades, share an October exhibition at Patina Gallery. Kahn and Fisher both use luxurious materials, both are excellent craftsmen, and both base their work on geometry and pattern. There the resemblance stops. Fisher makes elaborate tapestries, incorporating steel, paper, canvas, and oil paint. He gilds the richly textured pieces with 24-kt Italian gold leaf. The result is elegant and modern. Kahn makes necklaces and bracelets by crocheting tiny glass beads into ropes accented with gold and precious or semiprecious stones. Sensuous and sinuous, the colors shift along the length of the piece.—LVS
Above: Greg English, Acoma and San Ildefonso, oil on panel, 36 x 18"
Greg English and Sandy Graves Worrell Gallery worrellgallery.com 103 Washington October 13–November 30 Reception October 13, 5–7 pm Worrell Gallery presents a show for two Western artists. Bronze sculptor Sandy Graves hails from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She pushes, pulls, and elongates the forms of her animal subject matter. Graves often ends up with more negative than positive space in a piece, giving it the look of a quick but skilled bronze sketch. Greg English takes the opposite tack. His paintings of Native American pottery, baskets, and artifacts show even the tiniest details. English’s mother is a painter, and by the age of 10 he had caught the bug, drawing everything around him. Now an oil painter, English’s paintings are filled with warmth and appreciation for his Southwestern subjects.—Lisa Van Sickle October 12, 2017 NOW 3

letter from the executive director
mission statement
Welcome to our 9th Annual Santa Fe Independent Film Festival, a solid five days of world-class programming, with over 100 films and events at five theaters, masters discussions, director panels, Q&As, and awards ceremonies. This year, John Sayles and Maggie Renzi will accept the 2017 SFIFF Lifetime Achievement Award, with a screening of their Oscar-nominated film Lone Star at The Lensic. We are honored by our elder 2017 honorees, N. Scott Momaday and Max Evans, who capture the richness of American Indian and cowboy history, respectively; and we confirm SFIFF’s long commitment to authors. We also team up with Meow Wolf to host John Waters’s one-man show in a return to Santa Fe after his sold-out performance at the 2013 SFIFF. Thanks to SFIFF’s volunteers, advisory board members, festival director, and 50 community partners who make our annual fest a rocking success. Santa Fe Independent Film Festival is all about the love of film and our hometown, Santa Fe. Come join us to celebrate films, independence, our stellar fall weather, stunning mountain setting, great restaurants, and world-class theaters with fun, friendly filmmakers and film lovers; and see why SFIFF is fast becoming a hot destination on the film festival circuit.
The Santa Fe Independent Film Festival invests in the advancement of independent, innovative, and cutting-edge cinema, bringing five days of excellence in filmmaking to the inclusive and diverse community of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
